The pace of breakers’ ideas is just insane, how he’ll hang on to one motif and you’d think of course he would have forgotten about it yet manages to sneak it back in
TheEleatic I happened to see McCoy almost 30 years ago , in the KYOTO station❗He was there with his sidemen .I told him how I'd liked his albums in his MILESTONE era, He made a certain smile ,(probably because I made something wrong with him…)and then , we shook hands with big smiles……He was truly a GENTLEMAN‼I'm so proud I shook his GOD-HANDS.
@@Ici-st4hg Great story. So many great albums he made for Milestone Records. I especially love Supertrios, Inner Voices, Trident, Focal Point, Together, but the others are great too.
Saw them too around the same time in Ryde, NY (I think it was), but the guest was Phil Woods instead of Michael Brecker. I'd always been a big fan of Phil, but I was apprehensive about whether his style would work with McCoy's group. But he was outstanding along with McCoy's trio -- wonderful concert.
@@bholaoates1542 You should check out Woods and his band the European Rhythm Machine from the late 60's early 70's that band played with some very intense energy.
@@mrdog66 Thanks for the recommendation -- I will do that. I've been aware of those recordings since the 70's, but never got around to hearing them. Meantime, RIP McCoy Tyner who just died.
To be honest -- and sincerely wishing NOT to offend any fellow-jazzophiles -- I think that MB has got his shit together SO WELL that on this particular track he's EVEN BETTER than 'Trane playing the original version.
McCoy had that jazz sound that pulled me into a lifelong enjoyment, His attack and fluidity on piano was a pinnacle moment for me RIP McCoy, you will be with me until I meet my own demise :-) Let's not overlook the incredible Michael Brecker, and of course the Bass player drummer (who is top notch) huge respect for Michael who clearly appreciating the drummers talent. Wow!
Aaron Scott's drum solo is phenomenal. It's beautifully melodic. And thematic. If you don't understand how those terms play in relation to its being rhythmic or dynamic, you are missing what a good jazz drum solo is all about.
My favorite Tyner trio of all time. They had such a rapport... Even without Brecker, such a great band. Wished they had worked together and recorded together again after "Infinity".
couldnt agree more !!! saw them live in London UK years back, and they didn't just raise the roof, they ripped the roof off and stomped all over it, the collective group intensity achieved levels that could only be described as stratospheric. Never experienced a piano trio like it. Truly phenomenal. Brecker must have felt as if he were in heaven to be able to enjoy the pinnacle luxury of such a rhythm section and blessed to be able to join them on stage and create such a pinnacle of collective music together
I just can't understand how people doesn't get up from their chairs after hearing a thing like this. I'll be freaking out! Thanks for sharing the music Louis!

It’s not “childlike” to show a modicum of excitement other than/above slapping your meat mittens together when applicable.
Sax teachers say to keep fingers stuck to the keys, because when you will play faster you will have more economy in motion. This does not apply if you are Michael Brecker :)
He had quite big hands, and I don't him keeping that far away. David Sanborn, which is way different from Michael Brecker, but still, is a good player, has a more noticeable spread from his hands to the keys.
His fingers are still generally relaxed and not flying too far off the keys as he plays the fast lines. His fingers rarely “straighten out,” which is usually what we teachers are more concerned with.
even us sax teachers rarely get this aspect of technique perfect. it is no coincidence that charlie parker DID keep his fingers in perfect position, and he was even FASTER than brecker. he was faster than pretty much anyone, and his technique (of the fingers specifically) was perfect. watch any clips you can of parker's fingers, you'll be amazed. amazing what 12 hours a day for 2 years can do. after parker's famous public failure where the drummer threw a cymbal at him, he spent 12 hours daily for the next 2 years practicing in a woodshed. and yes this is the source of the expression for heavy practice "i need to do some woodshedding". it always APPLIES even if you are the great brecker, if he had managed it, he would have been even faster.
Louis, thank you so much for your UA-cam-Canal ... Such a great opportunity to listen to Mike Brecker and even see him. In the eighties, I wondered about ALL the phantastic Brecker-Solos out there in the world in the worlds stages everywhere, not awailable to the wider audience. Unlike the records. But now, in UA-cam-Times and grace to your passion, the music of Mike (and all the others geniusses) is awailable. Much to listen and to study!! Thank you so much again, Louis. Michael Brecker has been moving much faster than sound; hasn't he? In about a decade's + time he must involuntarily leave this Earth plane - has to. Tears with JOY must follow! What joyful sadness! Michael lives; long live Michael!
He was always on fire. He lived to take it to next level and beyond and pulled all those around him to a higher musical consciousness. He was Mozart on steroids and crack, living in a f_cked up modern world.
Thank you so much for posting this Louis! I'm a huge fan of Michael's work and your website, it's always such a treat whenever a new video goes up. Keep up the great work!
The famous Trane wall of sound and cacading notes. Brecker idolized Trane and played as often as possible with Tyner Trane's equally proficient keyboard mate. Brecker's unique voice was magnificent and is missed...
Michael Brecker was probably the greatest technician out there on tenor saxophone, but he never touched me the way Coltrane did. When MB played, the majority of the time, I never FELT his emotion as I did with Coltrane. But when Trane played "Impressions", "Transition", "Pursuance" etc., one heard nothing but pure unadulterated soul.....deep down heartfelt emotion. I've just never got that from MB.
Here he plays rather technical/intellectual. But some of his best moments are common ground (legendary Barcelona concert), trains (steps ahead Tokyo also the whole concert), pools (Copenhagen glyptothek), original rays (wiesen Austria), cityscape album, African skies album version, spherical (bottom line, tokyo).
+Pepper Williams He def is one of the best technicians w/ Bird (who obviously didnt have the ability to be influenced by trane.) 1990"s Kenny Garrett Third Quadrant, Impressions, Moose the mooche, Computer G etc. Of course Shaw and Hubbard 2. Music is essentially sounds that represent emotions in the present w/ thought to the past and dreams of the future.
If Mike was alive he would look at you like you were crazy! here it is everyone knows who he chose to emulate and now you want to rank him higher than the master! Fact of the matter is there is no Micheal Brecker or Chris Potter or Kenny Garrett with out John Coltrane! Thats why they're all CHASIN' THE TRANE!
Agree, w/ You here Daryl. We all chase the Originators, as We emulate , appreciate and are in awe . We learn conceptually from their feel , emotion, and sheer showing up out of the Universe. Peace.
I may be alone in my thought.. But I've never heard Brecker play like this until recently. Last 10-15 years maybe. Been listening since the Brecker Brothers. Must have gone into the shed.. Reemerged a different cat. Did a nice job on Herbie's "The New Standard" which I think is his next greatest achievement playing with the masters.

Obviously influenced by Coltrane, but Brecker took the baton and ran uniquely to his own destiny.
He goes totally 'Trane when the piano and bass drop out only leaving him and Aaron playing.

Stunned by this brilliant performance and then the tenor sax/bass finish!!! Wow!
I don't understand how the audience is still sitting after this tune. Hell, that kind of performance would bring a paraplegic to his feet.
Joey van Leeuwen The audience was paralyzed by the brilliance of the performance.
Not everyone has to go crazy (child-like) to show appreciation. Sometimes just sitting and showing respect until the end is quite adequate.
