A major figure in contemporary instrumental music, tenor saxophonist and composer Michael Brecker is an eight-time Grammy-winner, and the first to win both the "Best Jazz Instrumental Performance" and "Best Jazz Instrumental Solo" two years in a row.
As a result of his stylistic and harmonic innovations, Brecker is among the most studied instrumentalists in music schools throughout the world today.
Most recently, Brecker has released his seventh solo album, Nearness of You: The Ballad Book, featuring a dream ensemble of fellow jazz giants: Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Haden and Jack DeJohnette. The album is produced by Pat Metheny, with legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor adding his voice to the peerless musical alchemy on two tracks.
Born into a musical household in 1949, Brecker's father played records by Dave Brubeck and Clifford Brown and took Michael and his older brother Randy to see Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and many other jazz icons. While Randy took up trumpet, Michael launched his studies on clarinet and alto sax; moved by the genius of Coltrane, Brecker switched to tenor in high school. After studying, as did his brother, at the University of Indiana, he made the mandatory move to New York City, landing work with several bands before co-founding the pioneering jazz-rock group Dreams in 1970. In 1973, Brecker joined his brother in the frontline of pianist/composer Horace Silver's quintet. The following year, the siblings branched off to form the Brecker Brothers, one of the most innovative and successful jazz-funk fusion bands of the decade. Michael and Randy also operated the popular downtown Manhattan jazz club Seventh Avenue South. Jam sessions with keyboardist/vibes player Mike Maineiri, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Steve Gadd led to the 1979 formation of Steps Ahead. With Peter Erskine later replacing Gadd, the all-star quartet recorded seven albums and ascended to worldwide fame during the 1980s.
Brecker has recorded and performed with a virtual Who's Who of jazz and pop giants in the 70s and 80s, including Chet Baker, George Benson, Dave Brubeck, Don Cherry, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Quincy Jones, Charles Mingus, Joni Mitchell, Jaco Pastorius, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Steely Dan, Tony Williams, and Frank Zappa, and cut his first record as a leader in 1987.
That solo debut, Michael Brecker, was voted "Jazz Album of the Year" in both Down Beat and Jazziz magazines. Its follow-up, Don't Try This At Home, garnered Brecker his first Grammy. After investigating new rhythmic concepts on 1990Õs Now You See It ... Now You Don't, and subsequently touring for a year and a half with Paul Simon, Brecker reunited with Randy for 1992's Return of the Brecker Brothers. Out of the Loop (1994) and Tales From the Hudson (1997) put additional Grammys on the saxophonist's shelf, leading to Brecker being named "Best Soloist of the Year" by JazzLife and "Jazz Man of the Year" by Swing Journal. He also bolstered his star-studded resume with appearances on Herbie Hancock's The New Standard (Verve) and McCoy Tyner's Infinity (Impulse!), followed by extensive touring with each piano titan.
His third solo album in the last four years, following 1998's Two Blocks From the Edge and 1999's Time Is of the Essence (featuring Metheny, organist Larry Goldings, and drummers Elvin Jones, Jeff "Tain" Watts and Bill Stewart), Nearness of You finds Brecker reunited with the jazz innovators who appeared on his first two dates as a leader. Metheny, DeJohnette, and Haden played on Michael Brecker, and DeJohnette, Haden, and Hancock provided the rhythm section on Don't Try This At Home. But this was the first time they all played together as a unit for an entire album. Nearness of You was produced by Metheny, marking the first time the guitarist has stepped into that role for any major jazz artist other than himself and his own group.

Haha I just realized I went #6, #5, #7. My bad! You get what I was going for, though. ;)
Numbers are subjective
You were so nervous cause' dat phrasing so it,'s ok, i would made the same mistake maybe while listening MB 😈😈😈😈😈
When you were listening to the clips, it blew your brains into jelly, so it's understandable you mixed them up. I'm surprised it's in as good an order as it is, after your face was melted off by these tasty solos.
simply the truth! Point!
the latest is always the greatest the tenor sax was made for him and him only Mike, your a great 👍 inspiration, when ever I am down your playing takes me to a place of solitude 😊 thanks Michael
The seven times Michael Brecker went beast mode: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
John Dolph Well articulated.
Luv it !
Greatest. Comment. Ever.
He only needed Saturday, two shows...
I was going to carry the same idea but you told it the best
Honestly, I love his playing, but one of my favorite things about brecker will always be just how much he looks like an accountant while doing all the crazy stuff he does
tone, phrasing, dynamics, timing, articulation, power, vocabulary...He had the lot.
Holy cow. He never ceases to amaze after decades of listening to MB. He’s now immortal.
He lived in the loft downstairs from my longtime drummer, Howie Wyeth on 19th st. We jammed and did gigs together. This monster genius was the sweetest cat I ever met.
The opening Skunk Funk solo is simply the best, especially the roaring multiphonic at 1:21 and the descending lick immediately after!
Like Bob Berg, Brecker played every solo like it was his last. Thankfully for us they did, since they left us WAY too soon.
I still find so much emotion in his craziest of lines. the sheer hard work he put into the craft is without question, but the emotion in his lines is what makes him special to me.
If he golfed -every drive 350 yards
If he hooped- 100 pts a game ,all dunks
If he was a track athelet- own all the records.
Musically speaking the 8th wonder of the world.
he actually did ditch music for a period of time to play basketball haha
So sad that Michael the legend left us. He’s up there trading 4’s with Bird, Miles, Trane, Dexter and the cats.
Bob Berg
My saxophone after seeing this video:
Why you can't touch me like this man? 😪😪😪
Played with this guy once, he was absolutely amazing
The greatest musician ever to walk the earth! No one could ever match mastery of all the phases of his talent. When this eagle flew, is was effortless.
3:04 When Randy accidentally bumps into Michael during his solo and Michael lets out a high-pitched "hooonk" from his sax. So well timed! 😂
it's impossible to overstate mike's virtuosity, musical command, and digestion of musical styles. mind-bending...
Michael Brecker was the definition of beast mode 24/7.
In my opinion, the fastest technical Saxophone player. Ever.
My personal favorite Michael Brecker solo is that in the tune "Gossip", in Mike Stern's album "Time in Place". It gives me goosbumps every time!
What an absolute animal! Still sad that he passed away, because of that dreadful blood disease. Vinnie put out a message then, to donate blood, from a very specific type. If I had that type, I would have been giving it in a heartbeat. We miss you Mike. 😎😩
Great comp. Shame they don't come like Mike anymore. I can just imagine if Mike was alive today, how much fantastic playing he would have given us with the new electronic wind instruments. Again, Bernie Bootlegs, Thanks for sharing, and stay safe.
True. But, there is Jerry Bergonzi, Chis Potter and a few other Tenor Colossus Geniuses.
My youtube “teachers” always say to start improve with few notes “less is more or save best for last” but MB totally crushed that theory, he dives in with 120 note phrases, gets you excited from the first millisecond. Dang, what a video!
14:29 the substitution is the greatest sound in music. It never fails to get a reaction out of you when you hear it negotiated marvelously.
Thanks Bernie for the clips , being a saxophone player Michael remains the master, and inspiration
Love it, thanks for sharing!
My favorite Brecker performance is on the exquisite Michael Franks tune ‘When She is Mine’ - simply masterful
My Mom:
A Michael Brecker solo can't scare you
Me:
0:05
Oh god no! 😨😰😰
Na minha humilde opinião melhor e mais completo saxofonista que já existiu até hoje !
Seek out Brecker as part of The Atlantic Family live at Montreux 1977 on an incendiary version of Pick Up The Pieces - a building-melting solo and groove. I was fortunate enough to play with Brecker when he was guest soloist at our college jazz festival in 1986, he played w our university jazz ensemble on the first half, and Steps Ahead on the 2nd half. That day he gave a clinic at our music school and a few of us rode up the elevator with him. What a soft-spoken nice guy he was...and how lucky for us in the jazz program. He is missed.
Nunca, jamás, ni en este mundo ni en otros, ni en ningún otro universo paralelo, ni en ninguna otra realidad o dimensión, habrá otro como él. His talent is inconceivable.
Never, never, neither in this world nor in others, nor in any other parallel universe, nor in any other reality or dimension, will there be another like him. His talent is inconceivable.
I consider it a high point of my life that I saw this guy live. I'd pay serious money to see him play scales.
This is probably the 50th time I came back to watch this video !!
Great selections!!
If jazz is a language, he were able to communicate with whole galaxy
Puro genio. Grazie!!!!!!!!!!
Im glad I found Mike Brecker from Rick Beato.....marvelous sax player!❤
#7 is at least in the realm of us mere mortals if we wanted to try to learn it and give it a go! So beautiful and rich with color, phrasing and harmonic ideas.
Ho avuto la fortuna di ascoltare questo marziano dal vivo a Roma .Musica che ti fa venire la pelle d'oca.
1 am and with headphones at max, a lovely way to loose your ears but with groove folks!! Fucking groove!!
Certainly makes you want to love beasts.
Wow, Michael. I sure do love and miss you.
Jon
saw this guy back in the 80s with Mike Stern. Breck was blowin a bad ass horn back then.-as you can attest. RIP thanks Mr B!
The best!!! There are many greats he’s my favorite and I will mention Eric Marienthal who was the next Michael Brecker in line
Alex Han is up there, wish he'd play the tenor more.
Michael Brecker never entered or left beast mode. He simply is.
By the time he's finished, there's nothing left to play!!
the only 14 min top 7 on yt, for the real listenner
Was that first clip bootlegged from The Egg in Albany, NY?
Its definitely the lineup I saw there, and even the backgrounds look familiar!
Awesome!
The king
I would have loved to see Original Rays on this list, but it’s still a good one. Brecker is the best saxophonist to ever or will ever walk the earth.
Before he goes to sleep, Chuck Norris checks under his bed for Michael Brecker.
I can't recall a time I heard him he wasn't burning up the stage. The entries to his solos say " Look out, you're about to be floored" Hamish Stuart in the Chaka clip is laughing in disbelief.
Il mio numero uno in assoluto.Immortale
I feel Michael pretty much pissed off on #2
The best
Mucho Caliente!! Hombre!!
GOAT
Does anyone know what microphone he is using?
Chaka can be a visual handful there on #2. Made Randy Brecker clap on the "one"
Favorite Brecker solo - with E.S.T. and Metheny and Landgren: ua-cam.com/video/sya8Bb76-4Q/v-deo.html
NUCLEAR
Sometimes it's the quality of note selection instead of quantity like the 2 solos he took on Candy by Cameo
what is the tune from the #3 solo ?
This man wss a genius
What is the name of the tune at #2?
The joy of sax!
Mom: Michael Brecker Beast doesn't exit he can't hurt you
Me: Sees this video... 😨😨😨😳
This video started at 1.25x speed and I didn't notice for a minute...I was like WTF is this
...no Larry Goldings stuff?! Maybe there is less footage of that. I saw Michael with Goldings at the Reno Jazz Festival when I was highschooler. It was some of my favorite Brecker sounds...they got really out.
Le Larry Bird du saxophone , un Monstre RIP , Legende de France
#2 what performance is that?
Saw MB live….I wish could play even close to his level-next life maybe ?
#7👌🏻😃
Michael Brecker could kill a man with just his solos
OOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's the 7 tune?
The Bruce Lee of saxophone! RIP.
Damn why does everybody die.... I miss my eighties
Yeowww!
A night in insanity.
Michael Brecker IS the beast mode.
Name of the 7fh track?
I miss him!
the 24 dislikes are the reeds Michael broke in 1995
The dislikes are probably folks that feel playing fast doesn't equal good.. but I'm guessing playing fast is what Bernie considers beast mode. I've seen the same style videos on musicians like Oscar Peterson, where "beast mode" just means "fast".
The dislikes were looking for metal....
Sigh back when you could see those
What? There are not even 7 times Brecker *didn't* go beast mode.
That was his default setting.
Intenzity I was thinking the same thing
Lol!!! 100%
came here to say this
nothing more, nothing less than 100% always
word.
Brecker went into beast mode while brushing his teeth
Autodidactus Plays JRPGs i hope not, ;)
Autodidactus Plays JRPGs I need to brush my teeth right now
ha yes fosho
but beasts can’t go Michael Brecker mode
sad, but true
Best comment ever!
Joe Hernandez wow this is a nice surprise! I’d forgotten that comment 😂
@@nofretzDW still remember 2 years later?
@@Auditas I do now! Thanks 😂
I’m convinced Mr Brecker used “cheat codes”. 🤠🤠🤠
This comment, which keeps the gamer metaphor going beautifully, deserves more likes!
I was lucky enough to see Michael Brecker 8 times. Live or not, you left out a bunch and to me these were not the Beast or the best of the man. The greatest Tenor Sax of all times,he had the best notes, a genius in how he used his God given abilities. What a loss, can you imagine what we could have been able to listen to had he lived another 30 years?, and his last album he gave everything to his his last breath. How lucky they are in Heaven to hear him play. A true gentleman with Grace.
ALL opinions are subjective. This being said, I love and miss Michael Brecker the musician.
Sven Olavson
It irks me when people say "God given" about people who work their asses off.
@@Robjoe757 add Allan Holdsworth
Michael Brecker was the first jazz musician I ever heard live. It changed my life!
Not god given, guarantee he worked for it
Brecker is one of my heroes on tenor, but for #3 I couldn't help but imagine him (after his solo finished) asking me if I'd like to apply for a bank loan lol
He'd be the most burning banker out there though.
I would ask for a jazz loan with him
The human torch was denied a bank loan. The human torch was denied a bank loan.
No matter who you are there's always someone who can play the sax better than you.
The exception to that rule is Michael Brecker!
Leo p?
@@andys4971 nah
@@andys4971 not on tenor
@@andys4971 not close
@@andys4971 What's with little kids treating this guy like he's god
Woah these notes hit faster than my dad
TSOJTC?
Tiago Lageira hah
very sad for you???
Your dad is mike Tyson? 😆
LOL
Adjusting your sunglasses while taking on a solo is a higher level of badass.(#4)
Talk about taking the tenor saxophone to the limit. No one did, or ever will, like Michael Brecker.
He always went beast mode
There is always this performance as well. Total beast mode. In a gold bathing suit. ua-cam.com/video/yAJnpaFRrlw/v-deo.html
The great Dennis Chambers on drums, too!!!
Coming soon from Bernie's Bootlegs: Michael Brecker - The Bar Mitzvah Tapes
Jazz Video Guy lol, the Brit Mila tapes
I am so grateful to have seen MB perform on more than 10 occasions. I am a flute player, that doubled on Tenor. He was my hero. The heir to Coltrane. When he passed away, I was devastated. After his passing I started listening to a lot of Bob Berg, also a well accomplished player. Then his life ends tragically on a winter night in a car crash. I am reluctant to like another tenor player........all the ones I admire pass away tragically.
Thank you for posting this solos. They are inspiring.
Had to smoke a cigarette after watching this video. Speechless. Bravo. RiP Mike with tears and a smile. Ed
Barcelona Spain 92-Return of Brecker brothers, take your pick, Common Ground, for Barry, (Rogers) He shreds the living crap out of every solo and that band was ridiculous. Steps Ahead, the first three he kills the beast many many times over. Check it out. Anyone who has not listened to Steps Ahead's first three albums, you are missing out on one of the best bands M.B. was in. So freaking creative. The last ten years have been somewhat empty with M.B. so thank God for these UA-cam recordings.
I love how in #3 Brecker is dressed like an attorney. He's like, "I object Your Honor. Allow me to badger the witness."
For anyone wondering what notes he played for that pattern at 4:33-4:35, "C Bb Eb C Ab F" then take the same line and move it down half steps.
Ikechi Onyenaka thanks!
are you pitch perfect or something
don't talk shit you dumbass
