I always use sections of pipe insulation cut to fit the various tube lengths. Pipe insulation is very cheap and offers excellent protection. Also, remove the RD to protect from a bent hanger.
4:40 - Good idea to feed the velco straps through the actual pedal platform cutouts, not just strap them down, that way it's impossible for them to slip out...and risk damaging your frame.
This has been so useful. Thank you.
This was awesome information, thank you! :D
Good use of sub motion orchestra 👍
Good video, cheers.
Just bought a bikeBoxAlan. And, I suggest folks watch GCN's guide, so much easier to follow than the dated video bikeBoxAlan has on the site...
Awesome... Thank You
All the Germans visiting Majorca used cardboard bike packing boxes (that the bikes are originally delivered to the bike shop in), my (proper) bike box was wrecked every journey. Cardboard is immensely strong and cheap!
you sould do a video showing off your bike colection daniel loyd!
I also have Bike Box Alan and I have a spare old Zipp skewer for the wheels and the skewer may get to the frame so the padding to the rear skewer is advisable. No need for rear derailleur protection it is good enough. I don't have floor pump to bike box and it is in the normal luggage. I have padding all tubes.
this is gonna come in handy.
Is there a way to secure the externally exposed locking nuts for the rims from some casual baggage handler or other jostling from loosening, removing or losing them?
@Global Cycling Network; would you also advise to dismount any Garmin Aeromounts aswell? Or just see, if they're in the way or not? Thanks and cheers from Germany
Would you say this is good for home storage, I have a shed but as it has other bikes I am thinking of buying one to keep my good expensive bike in.
So after watching both the box and bag video, I'm curious to know if you folks prefer one over the other?
as a newbie to GCN almost didn't recognise Dan there!! Jiminy Cricket!
I like the red bike box case that is being presented here. Where can I purchase it? Do they deliver internationally?
Also worth mentioning possibly deflating the tyres if youre gonna put it in a plane. I've never flown with a bike, but I've heard that inflated tyres can explode in the unpressurised hold! Can anyone confirm or deny this?
Yes they can but most planes have pressurised holds I believe
Sam Perry nope you do need to deflate your tires....
Rob King Just an FYI, the ENTIRE aircraft is pressurized, cabin AND cargo holds. You should deflate your tires because of the pressure differential, but not to worry, the cargo hold where your bike is stored for travel is absolutely pressurized.
Yup - since writing my original comment I've read a number of times that you can keep the tyres inflated. In fact, it is recommended that you keep them pumped up at least partially, to avoid damaging the rims.
+Rob King this depends on the airline, some require it and some don't.
1.- Could you, please, say what´s the brand and model of this case/box? 2.- Does it have keylocks? 3.- If you´re travelling to the USA should you let the box (the locks I mean) open like the regular baggage?. Thanks a lot for this and all your videos
+willybum2 no necessarily nowadays because the cargo hold is now pressurised, but i deflat mine just to be safe.
Is Uvex Crow Pro good solution for a road bike and sunny days ?
Can you pack a bike with integrated cables in handlebar in that box? ( wilier cento10ndr). Which bike size fits in? What should I look for when I buy such a box? Thanks!
First time packing up a bike with Di2. The battery is in the seat post. In the video it says remove the battery. Does this mean I need to take the seat post in my hand luggage ? Or does it just need to be disconnected ?
Make sure you come back for the Tour Down Under!
Hey! would a full suspension-
, 2.3" 29er fit in a Bike Box Alan??
Will the bike box work with a through axle? Thanks.
At 1:36 you loosen the stem bolts so the handlebars turn freely. By 2:40 the stem and handlebars are away from the frame. When I do this there's a problem with exposing part of the fork that the steering tube was covering. What should you do during this continuity error!?
can you recommend a good bike box ?
I have question. in one video you guys told us to remove the stem from the bike and the other video you guys say to just remove the handlebars from the stem. which is right?
Hi. I've just received a new Canyon bike and I've found out they have through Axle mounts for the wheels, these bike boxes I notice mount the wheels with a removable axle/spare nut, does anyone know if these boxes allow for the Through axle style or if you need a different type of box? Many thanks,
What type of bike is this please
what about the air pump that was there in the left
could I do this with a track bike?
I own one of those boxes and I'm underwhelmed to be honest. If you have 28" wheels they won't fit in the respective cutouts and you have to wiggle things and add padding. They now have a bigger size box which fixes this problem. They also added velcro straps for the wheels. Would I buy one of their boxes again... I'm not so sure about it.
Will this fit a MTB
Great vid. Where are you going? I'd like to see an episode on how to plan a bike tour. i would like to do a bike tour of Holland and Ecquador some day. You could pack all you clothes in that one box! Don't get them greasy :)
We went to Mallorca Steve Baker.
Tyler Bronder we did! Great place!
I took my bike abroad for the first time and on the flight had a nasty thought of air pressure and the inflated tires. Should you release the air out the tyres?
Don't forget to deflate your tires.
what is that thing (clamp?) that marks the seat post called?
I just came back here for the green trousers.
What is the work done on the handlebar pork (behind the brakes)!!!!
@Dan or Matt, I have a 5 series Trek Domane frameset and I'm looking at getting a BikeBox Alan case to protect it on it's travels to majorca in 2016, do you think the case will fit the domane frame as the seat tube is extended and the post fits over the extension. In this video it looked like there would be enough room but I don't know what size frame you used. Mines a 56cm Cheers
+Brian Woods hmmm - I wouldn't be confident giving you an answer either way. I'd suggest trying it in a friends box if you know somebody who's got one, or simply giving them a call with your bike dimensions.
Dan
Thanks for the reply, I wrote to them and they think it'll be fine 😀
It will fit. I already tried on trek 6.9 and also have a propel small size and I can fit it without removing the seat!
I'm planning my first trip abroad (Mallorca funnily enough) hence watching this video. Which airline did you fly with and are there any that you would advise to avoid? Thanks for any help.
Hi Myles, we've flown with our bikes on loads of airlines, mostly Easyjet or Ryanair though and we've not had any problems with any of them (so far). As long as your bike bag or box is well packed you should be fine - enjoy your holiday :-)
Global Cycling Network Clearly pre-Si’s Aeroad...
Bike box manufacturers should make space in the box for tools and a floor pump. Cut outs in the foam maybe. I made the mistake last time of putting my tools and pump in my hand luggage. Airport security didn't mind the pump but I had to discard the pedal spanner and Allen keys. Either that or pay for the hand luggage to go into the hold.
The tools were worth less than the luggage fare so I opted to leave the tools behind.
The problem would be the extra weight. My bike is light at about 7kgs but with the box it weighed 19.6 on the airport scales. The limit was 20 kgs.
Don't forget to deflate tyres especially if flying!
what do you do with the box when you arrive at your destination? will they store it at the airport?
nathanyamaha465 store them in the hotel room/wherever you're staying.
Great video but tough watch with those green trousers and red undies poking out
What was the frame size ? Of Dan's bike
Nice Ridley helium ;D
reclif . thanks!
Question: do the spokes of your front wheel come into contact with the box? If so, aren't you worries that the pressure will get them out of true / fuck up the spokes?
That is a slight risk yes but short of getting a hard case there's no way round this.
whats the brand of this box?
What did he say the brand of the bike was?
Excellent video, but you forgot to deflate the tires. Some airlines will remind you of that though.
even it's another subject, but i'd to know if u're happy with the Vectors?!!!!
zine el abidine Ghafiri yes - really pleased with them!
didnt u make a similar video last yr?
pack a time trial bike with integrated stem!
Very nice bike box. The only problem is how would you transport a disc wheel?
+yogatriathlete Our Aerotech Evolution TSA bike box is compatible with disc wheels.
+SCICON BAGS I likee the red hard case that is being presented here. Do u ship internationally? Please message me. Thanks
Don't use the crush bar with disc wheels.
Sti lever? Sram total integration?
I see what you did there
I am planning for a summer bike trip and looking to purchase a bike bag (for a road bike) for the first time. What are the key features you should look for when choosing one? Budget will be key as well but which bags do you recommend? #torqueback
What if youve got an ISP?
Should I deflate tyres incase they might explode at higher altitudes?
Yes.
I bought the same box only to realize i can't fix my thru axle wheels, as the axles are thicker. Any tips on any kind of adapter i can use. Thanks in advance.
just use a set of normal QR axles and stash the thru axles in the box, not perfect but works
I just had a very rare, limited edition bicycle show up completely thrashed. Broken spokes, bent front wheel, and bent forks!!! Total bummer.
How do you secure wheels with straight through axles?
Hi, did you ever figure this one out? I've just received a new bike (Canyon) with this through axle, never heard of before and am about to hire a bike box but need to know how to secure the wheels to the box? Many thanks for any advice.
@@ianthompson3863 I never actually used a bike box in the end. There are some other comments from people who have more experience than me . I do take the front wheel off when I put the bike in the car and one important thing is always to put the axle in the forks after removing the wheel. This gives the forks ridgidity. Good luck.
Is there room in the box for tools and a floor pump?
Bernard Manansala space for a few tools for sure. Maybe give the floor pump to a friend with a bike bag.
That chain touching that foam, nasty.
Will it fit a TT bike ?
Akhil Alex well if you gave a full disc rear this is not gonna work.
How strict are they in customs about small amounts of dirt and dust on your bike?
Never had a problem, as you know all our bikes at GCN are always immaculate!!
do you have to loose the tire pressure ?
roborovski008 the airline is going to ask if you have, so let them down a bit.
Colored electrical tape doesn't leave black residue
Hey Global Cycling Network are you/ have you done a video on how to find your
VO2 max yet?
James Richards we've covered it in this one: How To Use A Powermeter - Test Your Fitness Levels. Let us know if this is something you'd like more info on!
Global Cycling Network thanks for the link, the reason I asked that was due to watching the 'how to improve fitness video ' you did last year. Perhaps you could do another one of these fitness videos, explaining how to best maximise fitness gains if you don't have that much time on the bike.
James Richards thanks. Great suggestions! By not much time on the bike does that mean that you have smaller blocks of time in the week where you might be able to get some off the bike training in?
Global Cycling Network so for example if you have a busy week (at school/work) and can only have say, an hour or less on a turbo at a time how to best maximise the time used on the turbo for increasing fitness.
James Richards it's best to mix it up with different sessions. If you're time crunched, you'll still need to take easy days and rest days, so bear that in mind too. You could use some of our spinning/turbo sessions (here: ua-cam.com/play/PLUdAMlZtaV13e3-rJq1W0O1kf2DVlslmC.html) and go from there.
I'm guessing you have to pay excess baggage for that
haha… i thought this was going to be about the boxes usually painted green for cyclists to organize themselves at the front of intersections… how to fill them with as many cyclists as possible :D
where can i get a box
интересно куда девать такой чехол после того как проехал в транспорте и дальше нужно двигать своим ходом.. О_о
No need to remove the rear derailleur then?
Depends on the bike box. If you have to remove it, I find it's better to just unscrew the entire derailleur hangar with the derailleur still attached to it...as you still run risk of bending hangar by removing derailleur only. This way it's impossible to bend the hangar if it isn't there!
thechosendude That's actually a must. I've got such a problem and its really had to get the frame straight back again. So always unscrew the deraileur and the hanger.
you got slop on your bars. 4:10 under the hood
You also need to deflate the tires if you don't want them to explode in transit when the planes at altitude.....
500 gbp for this? damn no thanks.... there are other options way cheaper
Dan's red undies
Nooooo, never put your pedals and kit in the box with the bike! If you lose the box but have your pedals and gear in your luggage, you can still hire a bike when you arrive and use your own stuff with it.
***** Good point. But, if they lost my bike, I'd be too sad to pedal even a meter. - AB
Cowspiracy
the bike box looks areo as fck
Don't trust the baggage handlers I've seen what they do to these bike boxes. Best to send by mail carrier rather than on your actual flight. Not that more expensive and you know it will be treated a lot better
Shipping.one if these bike boxes internationally with a mail courier will cost about four times more than the overage fee with the airline.
waste of money, just use the carboard box the bike came in.
Lol
Good video, cheers.
