    Putting the stem, spacers, screws and any other small objects in the bottles is a great tip I've learnt from travelling.

      not in the cage... but in the bottle; just add water and mix the screws and spacers together itll be a tasty treat.

    Tips - loosely wrap a towel around the handle bars - can be used to wipe down frame after rides at destination. Also, secure or protect chain so it doesn’t flop around and damage the chain-stay whilst in transit

    Was searching for a box compatible with my disc brake bike. Didn't find any and ended up with the scicon 3.0. that's a great bag I have to say albeit it's a soft case not a hard box but it saves the process of removing handle bar and seatpost.

    Great vid, thanks! One thing worth mentioning is you don't have to let air out of your tires. Cargo holds in planes are pressurized and many people think you have to let the air out of your tires.

    Great video Ollie - one of the best, if not the best on bike packing.
    I have a Bikebox Alan along with a road bike with discs and thru axles. I did not want to risk taking the disc rotors off. My solution was to thoroughly wrap the disc rotors in bubble wrap before putting my wheels in padded wheel bags. I put the wheel bags into the Bikebox Alan using the same allocation for the front and rear wheels but with the rotors facing inwards. The only downside was that I could not use the crush pole. This was not an issue for me as Scicon make similar hard case bikeboxes without a crush pole. The Bikebox Alan survived handling at a number of international and local airports without any mishap.

    Put bolts, clamps, tools and other small object in a plastic bag. Put it in a bottle, top with bobble wrap. Put the bottle in the cage. On many bikes it is possible to unscrew the rear mek, and strap it inside the frame, to get enough free chain take the chain of the chainrings and lave it close to the frame. Wrap some bobble wrap around the loose chain.

    Great videos as I am thinking of getting a bike box. Also good as it explains options for thru axles and hydraulic disc brakes. Like the point about anti crush bar not being replaced by customs. Was going for a bike box Alan may go for the velovault now thanks

    hi Ollie
    great show ! i have some ideas for you. not sure they are all good but here they are.
    1. for saddle height; before removing the seatpost move a rear light clamp into position over the clamp, nice and snug. when you go to rebuild, simply push saddle/seatpost back until you hit the clamp.
    2. getting the wires back out is easy. go to your local hardware store and buy a retractable pen sized magnet. it is about a valve extender size in diameter, as short as a pen but extends far enough to touch bottom. unless the cable is not made of metal, the magnet will let you pull it out with ease
    3. remove the rear mech, bubble wrap it and zip tie it to the frame ( also bubble wrapped, of course
    4. remove chain, bring a new one, keep the old one as a spare in carry on
    as a side comment, i think bike boxes with hinges are a bad idea. flight cases come in a style with a removable top. this means perfect alignment every assembly plus the ability to build protective rods that are fixed inside box and lid, and mate up. also, why not build a box that has something better than a rod... a rib cage !
    lastly, the wheels should be removable . not exactly an engineering challenge there...

    what is the biggest SLT (stupid little thing) for you in cycling, eg remembering pins when you're doing a race or remembering to do your tyre pressures when you put race wheels back on or the Di2 cable taping when transporting a bike. SLTs always seem to be the things everyone forgets and have a ridiculously disproportionate effect on what you're trying to do

    Any luggage case either soft or hard are not designed for use forever. And that goes for bike cases as well. It a shame about bent wheel. The surrounding plastic will crack there and near handles. Soft material and stitching will tear.

    I already asked this and it's already half answered (very well by your bad self), but since it's a competition I'll ask again here. Performance wise, what's best: Tubs, tubeless, latex or standard tubes? I reckon we can all guess which one it isn't. For a bonus question; tubular rim tape or glue? x

    Good vid, but still not changed my mind about travelling with my bike. I'd much rather take my pedals and saddle having pre rented a bike over 'there'. I know it's more money but I'm too lazy to keep dissasembling and reassembling my bike, and I wouldn't trust it not to get broken in transit.

    • @LewLew18
      @LewLew18 6 років тому +1

      Jon Burnell it’s pretty similar money wise as you’ve to get a large van transfer both UK and destination side, the boxes are huge! It’s around £80 baggage cost and then around £60 to rent for a week...including the faff plus couple of pounds difference I’d rent in future

    • @DiabloValleyPeds
      @DiabloValleyPeds 6 років тому

      agreed ... only benefit is that if you bring your bike = it fits you perfect... no guarantee of a good fit = fiddle with the new bike or you put up with slightly imperfect fit: I think of it like going hiking with a new pair of shoes. Yes you can pick your size but until you have put 50 miles in the shoes, you won't know if the fit is perfect = uncomfortable fit may ruin a trip

    • @jonathanzappala
      @jonathanzappala 6 років тому

      Me too, I can put up with a strange bike for a week. But so far renting has been less. $150 for a week. The cost of buying an expensive box, and paying lots each flight for baggage, it would take several years to pay off.

    Talkin about ... What's in the box. A few years ago I boarded the high speed train to Paris from Grenoble in mid July ... Whilst the tour was on. We were in first class :-). The female conductor was quite distressed about the size of the bag and made me move it to economy. Then she asks me what was in it !!! .. I had been in France a few weeks and just about had it with French attitude ... So my reply was that Thomas Voeckler was in the box.
    Had the train not just pulled out of the station I am sure I would have been turfed off.
    Me and my mate spent the rest of the journey wondering what station they would throw us off ... But we made it to Paris .... Where we then had to navigate the absolute hell of getting a taxi with a bike box.
    The French.
    Nice roads.

    This year I've had the nice feeling of putting on my summer cycling kit from last year & finding it was too big after losing 10kg over the winter. What should I do with it?
    The tops are wearable for now, I could always use them as more casual gear for off-roading/popping to the shops or something. But with the plan to shed ~20kg more (driven by the incentive of a Canyon Endurance with Di2) I suspect it'll be like riding in a tent when I'm done. I doubt there's much of market online for 2nd hand gear (especially bib shorts) & I doubt I'll convince any of my mates to take it off my hands as it's all XXL stuff.
    It's all in good nick, so it feels a waste to just chuck it, donate it to charity perhaps?

    I’m really torn on this issue, going on my first cycling holiday to Mallorca this September and can’t make my mind up wether to take my own bike or just rent one. The costs are about the same by the time you’ve factored everything in, taking my bike and doing the Sa Calobra and Formentor would mean more to me but the general faff and worry of my bike getting damaged during transit puts me off. Had my handluggage searched a few weeks ago due to the peddles being in there, apperently the solid metal spindle set off the alarmbells. Never take tools not even a small allenkey in your handluggage (not allowed). Taking centrelock discs off/on without some proper tools is another reason not to fly with discs unless you have a swanky box.. I've got a question as well. What's your preferred way to carry, spares/tools/phone/money/keys when you are out on your roadbike, I hardly see you have anything with you?

    Hey Oli ! I know this is quite an old topic but I wanted to know if it’s worth getting pro bikes which are put up for sale . I am really tempted to get myself the Movistar Canyon CF 2015 which is being put up for sale in the Canyon website but a little concerned on the longevity on the cycle and it’s components itself . ESPECIALLY THE BATTERY WHICH IS EXTERNALLY FIXED TO THE FRAME. Say if I purchase it can I somehow mount it into the frame ? Or just letting it be as it is wouldn’t damage it from the elements outdoors? Or may be a review on such bikes which are being sold ?It would be great if Cycling Weekly could do a Video on it .

      Oliver Bridgewood Oli - that’s not quite correct - the whole fuselage is pressurised including the hold. “Pressurization systems are designed to keep the interior cabin pressure between 12 and 11 psi at cruise altitude. On a typical flight, as the aircraft climbs to 36,000 feet, the interior of the plane “climbs” to between 6000-8000 feet”
