5 years later and still a top video on UA-cam on editing workflow. Even better than the clip in your course since it goes into more detail. LOVE THIS. And also the comments below where people left additional tips.
Is it strange I LOVE editing and not filming lol?? I’m still new to this and as much as filming content is fun, it’s the editing that keeps me going! Love how I can take raw footage and create something that flows and has a beginning middle and an end. Love it! Your videos have seriously made my start successful so thank you! 🙏✌️💕🇨🇦
I was hesitant about editing backwards, worrying I would miss better takes. But after trying it on several cuts, it's clearly the fastest way to edit scripted videos. My tip for editing faster would be to remap often-used keyboard shortcuts (e.g., ripple delete, ripple trim, move forward/back 1 frame, move to next/previous clip) to the left side of the keyboard. This lets you keep your right hand on the mouse and use keyboard shortcuts with just your left hand via command/ctrl, option/alt, and letter keys on the left side of the keyboard. Thanks a lot for your tips!
Finally, someone had the wherewithal to post a workflow and explain it...from a professional! TY sir, love this vid (and your site). I look forward to your past and future vids! Keep up the good work and thank you so much.
That’s a great video thanks. It’s hard even you are doing car stuff and installation and customization . But I will use theses ideas for better and quicker editing
@@Vgk36 i get it. Sometime I have to work during the night and it’s not easy when your camera footage shows a lot of noise in there. But at the Sam time I need the go pro because I need something small. A big camera won’t work.
Great tips! The backward editing makes such a huge difference! First time heard it from you, it really shortened my editing time! The folder drop, in the program, wish I knew before! These tips will help many!
A tip. Just before colour grading, you need to do some adjustments on each and every clip. This can be exposure, colour temperatures, sharpness, contrast, while keeping in mind that you will be adding colour grading over all those clips right after this step.
Thanks for the great video. I spent several hours last night looking at editing "how to" videos, and found them to be very "commercial". Some talked way to fast, others dropped the f bomb in their videos. Thank you so much for an "easy to understand" professional video.
I really enjoyed this video. I generally enjoy the process of editing, but I know I’ve lost a lot of time by not applying your tricks to being more efficient. Thank you for this useful info today. I downloaded your PDF file. I look forward to saving time and producing better projects.
Do you use kinemaster? I've been looking at all these videos trying out how to put a bunch of overlays on an hour long video without having to pull them all along an inch at a time. Is there a way to do that? I'm on an Android phone.
you had me at step 1! i filmed my hardest most complicated scene first and editing took ages. but glad i tried to edit b4 filming the rest (of my 1st full length feature) because now i aim for 1-take-only with MAYBE close-ups thereafter and all in one go, pausing and recording as i mentally edit along the way so i can just chop away the crap later vs having to pull together a bunch of separate video pieces!! looking fwd to the rest of this video now (from 1:44) ! lol :D
Great tips. I especially liked the idea of clapping your hands 3 times to mark a spot on the video when shooting. My computers don't have the power to do any decent editing but I'm hoping to use my iPad pro & Luma Fusion. Do you have any tutorials for editing with tablets? Thanks for the videos.
This is pretty much my editing process since I first learned taught myself edit bc it just made sense. I like editing, but prefer most things done efficiently. That leaves more time for everything I like to do..😊
I have a tip for editors. Pre-sets are ok to use!! It's not lazy, it's there for a reason and it's to make the process faster and easier for you and if you don't like the exact pre-set you can in most programs edit them
An excellent video packed with lots of useful tips. It's the reason why many of the world's best film directors started their career as editors. When I do my cuts I like overlapping them so that you don't get a sharp cut but a nice faded transition from one video clip to the next one. I now also understand why old movies use a clapper board - it creates a great visual and leaves a nice spike in the audio timeline for syncing. I do like the tip of editing backwards but I wonder how much time is potentially wasted as one reviews the clip in the correct chronological order? You have a new subscriber - keep up the excellent work.
Justin, I am going to try this method immediately! I am on the hamster wheel currently, and I MUST get off it, or I will never be successful. Thanks so much for all of the tips and techniques you offer on your channel. I have a file FULL of notes on your videos. God bless you for bringing us newbies along!
Have to tell you Justin that I subscribe and follow a number of great video guys (Sean Cannell, Derryl Eves, Owen Hemsath), but I always get new nuggets of wisdom from your stuff. Keep up the great work!
I love the idea of editing from left to right. It makes so much sense! I'm going to try that in my next video. Do you recommend watching through everything first if it has been awhile since the video was shot?
I'm so happy I found your channel. I'm an older dude who is not a fan of this technology..lol you make it easier for someone like me. Question, what's the easiest way to shoot a video but also have a video playing in the background if you have too refer to it for the content of that specific video?
My biggest eye opener and not sure how i missed it, was proxy media! My system felt slow and sluggish. Now I edit super smooth and fast with a smaller video before exporting the real resolution
Gonna try some of these tips in an upcoming video! It has a few hours of footage, and most of our videos are less than 10 minutes, so this is something new for us! Though I enjoy the process, it does get a bit repetitive sometimes. Thanks for the tips!
Some great tips, what makes me feel sad though is that to get this kind of quality in my videos I’m going to HAVE to restrict myself to max one video a week and I do this as a hobby, not as a full time job otherwise I wouldn’t haven’t an issue. But if I try to be more regular, I just won’t have people the time to take such care in my edits. I usually just did one take for the whole video, but then the length of the video would vary dramatically and trying to decide how to cut it down proved long and arduous. So I guess I should try to incorporate some transitions of jump cuts, but I’m worried as some people really don’t like them.
When I started (some 9 years ago or so), I wish I knew how simple it was to duplicate or clone a project to use it for future videos. Very simple but I was literally doing each video from scratch
Keyboard shortcuts were great, I knew they were available but don't know which ones are handy or what any of them are, overwhelming so to speak. Would love a list of other keyboard shorts.

Hey Livia! Glad you like the videos! Personally I would use Premiere Pro or Final Cut but if you've been using iMovie and it works well for you then maybe continue to use it... if you'd like to learn more THEN step up to Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro 👍 Thanks!
@@PrimalVideo Thank you for your reply. I do want to learn more, it's not a priority right now... is it simple enough to use premiere pro for what I'm doing, or do you feel it would take a while to get it going. I'd love to be able to save templates that I use over and over. So far, I create it, then swap out the middle video and exported it again.
Hi, I love your videos. I've got the following question which is better for a-cut assembly - using in out and then inserting (looks like the standard method). Final Cut Pro X editors use this method - or putting everything on the timeline and trimming ( gives more precision and eliminates the need to insert into the timeline every single time). Editors like Taran from Linus Tech Tips use this

Not just on keyboard shortcuts but we mention them alot. It's something that can definitely speed up your editing in my opinion. It's worth looking in Help and seeing what you can do with them.
I was thinking of creating a UA-cam channel basically for reacting to music and music videos. Which free software should i use to edit my videos and that will allow me to have like the the little screen showing the music video that i'll be reacting to??

Good video but for me there's a lot of stuff I just don't do at all lol. I rather keep it simple. Also I do all my editing in one take. If you would need to come back later to refine or add text than it would take you way longer because you would have to find all those points again and rewatch it wouldn't you? Maybe it depends on the content. I film my hands while crafting and within an hour video there aren't very clear blocks that I can recognise easily. So to find a certain point in my video is really time consuming. If I record shorter clips and then attach them together, it's somewhat easier.
Watching the cricket indeed. I was hesitant about editing backwards, worrying I would miss better takes. But after trying it on several cuts, it's clearly the fastest way to edit scripted videos.
