As a JD Dealer, i like your videos and encourage my customers to go watch them and make up their own mind. I think these are 2 great tractors brands and customers should be aware of the pros and cons of each. Not every dealer share my opinion but I know MY costumers are happy that I'm willing to talk about it.

Another great video! Can't wait to get my B2301 next week. Many of these comments from B2301/B2601 alleviate my concerns going with b2301 and not LX2601. Great videos, great community / commenters

I finally got my B2301 (23hp version of the B2601). I was unsure about the treadle pedal.
First 2 hours of use: HATED it, was worried I was in trouble with this pedal
Next 2 hours: OK, it's getting better, but takes a lot of force with the heel to go in reverse
~Hour 5 or 6: OK, I'm getting the groove of this. This won't be a problem at all, and am sure I'll come to really like it.
So yes, there is a learning curve, and it isn't bad, and am starting to actually like it. Don't let the treadle pedal be the main/ only decision maker.
    Great videos/ comments!

I enjoyed the comparison. To me I think the reverse pedal is outboard on the JD because when you are reversing and twisting around to look behind you it is easier to run the pedal when it is outboard. I have a 1025r and like the reverse outboard and would be disappointed if it was the opposite.

My JD dealer told me, this came from a company rep, the reasoning behind the JD forward and reverse pedals arrangement was; when backing up a tractor most people will look over their right shoulder and it is a natural body movement for your foot to move outward as you turn your body, thus the reverse pedal being on the outside.
I enjoyed your comparison on both videos. Still glad I chose my John Deere 1023 E. We love it even though its the econo model. We really didn't need the extras on the 1025 R. And that "tredal pedal" on the Kubota, absolute pain in my book.
Thanks for the videos! We learned a lot and helped in making our decision on a purchase of a new tractor.

Good comparison and opinion videos. Bought the Kubota B2601 for two reasons: wanted the slightly bigger wheels due to terrain on my property, and JD dealers around me did not have 2025r’s on their lots. Love the B2601, I’m use to the treadle peddle, but I would much prefer twin peddle set up.

I have a Kubota and love the treadle peddle. I use my toe under the front to back up. But have a JD mower with the two pedals and like that too. You can get used to either one.
However, my JD plastic hood has cracked in three places and has been glued and bolted back together. Just from vibration not from contact. My metal Kubota hood still looks great.

That's the main reason I'm considering a B2601 vs. a 2025R. There are features I like more about Deere (plastic hood, fuel fill location, bucket attach, pedals, mower attaching/lift brackets) & more about Kubota (3 speed, swing arms, dash layout).

I was building a house and needed something that was robust. I love the 3 range transmission. I did work around my construction site that would have been harder with the 1025. If I was just a home owner I would go for the 1025, I needed something more. The B series is like the max size for mowing. I use a 3pt hitch finish mower and it’s large for turning around. I also moved 10’s of 10 wheeler loads of rock, sand, dirt and hard pack. Then I moved God knows how much material that was from the site.

  • @mattoverholser4266

I would assume that JD has the peddles that way because of ergonomics... Most of the time you're going forward and it's more ergonomic to have your foot closer to in front of you than off to the side. At least that's my feeling on using mowers that have it.
I also agree on that having a 3 range hydro is great. I'm assuming price is why JD doesn't include it in the smaller tractors.
The only thing I think you might have missed was the brakes. I like having split brakes, I know the 1025r doesn't have them, not sure if the Kubota does or not. I also know Deere doesn't offer them until you get to the large frame 2 series which is sad.

I have the 1025r and I've found the fender mounted lights to be useless. They don't telescope and the light mostly hits the side of the tractor. I also hope JD gets rid of the stupid turnbuckles for the sway arms. I still haven't figured out how to adjust those things properly. Overall, I agreed with your opinions.

I went through this two years ago between the 1023e, 1025r, B2301, B2601, plus a Yanmar. I laid out all the specs in a in a spreadsheet and give them weights based on my needs. The B2301 was the winner and I'm very happy with it. The B2301 will cost you less than a JD 1025r, it has a 3 range transmission, and independent breaks. The B2301 also has a 3point position control valve vs the 1023e quarter inching valve. The other big winner for me on the Kubota is the bigger tires. They give you a little more ground clearance and I had them loaded with Rim Guard and now I can do most loader work without having to attach ballast. Where I am in NH a BX is good for landscaping but doesn't have the ground clearance of lift capacity to do much if you get off turf. The 1 series is good for turf and a little work in the woods. The B01 tractors good for working on rough ground and in the woods but keep them off the lawn if the ground is at all wet.
My take is if your shopping for a machine ignore arbitrary classifications, and look at capabilities and real price of the machine instead of list price. The B2301 just packs a ton of value for my use case.

I love my 2301. I purchased it in 2018 and have a little over 400 hours. It has done a ton of work. I worked along side a 1025 and there is really no comparison in ability. It’s really all about weight. F I was going to go for a subcompact though it would not be a bx.

    • @ddelv1601
      @ddelv1601 2 роки тому +1

@@michaelcschmitt I agree, love me 2301 and really I can't use a much bigger tractor on my property. My next-door neighbor has a 2301 as well, and has used clear land for a nice new lawn. Though I'm maxing out the lift capacity with all the boulders and hard wood trees up here in NH.
My next toy might have to be a mini X. Though if I buy one my wife might use to dig my grave:) It's still probably worth it.

So true about metal vs. plastic. Courtney I don't know if you remember this but when Cub Cadet (MTD) changed the Super Garden Tractor lineup to use plastics for the hood and side covers over the engine people went bonkers. They said MTD was cheapening the SGT lineup. Well we all know MTD is famous for that but....
Many years later people have a different opinion about this today. Many realize as you said that it is so easy to make these pieces look new again. They are grateful it is plastic now! 😀😂😂

I revisited this great video review after eight months with my B2601. I would have gotten a 1025R if I could have worked with the JD salesman I drew. Anyway, I knew a main use of my tractor would be loader work but was surprised how much topsoil, mulch, and compost I moved this past summer. 50 yards of mulch and compost I bought and a huge stockpile of soil I had. One thing I love is that my Kubota will lift a big bucket load so high-that's necessary in my case to dump mulch over a 5-foot woven and barbed wire fence that the tractor is downhill from. The JD might do just as well. Now I know that, for a few years at least, until my plants dominate certain sites, that capability is crucial and might rule out a BX, say.
On the rear lifting power, had an interesting failure despite the tractor's odd power there. I decided to pull a fence post and couldn't, and had always been able to do so easily with my previous JD970 33 hp. But it might have failed too because this was a DRIVEN post, which farmers know are 5x stronger than augered and set posts. I had to use a big jack and pour in some oily water to grub it out.
I am getting used to the treadle pedal, which is notoriously stiff in reverse on the B2601. As well, I do not think it's natural to have to stomp down for reverse. I chocked the treadle for a while with a piece of 2x4 to loosen the spring. Not sure if that worked at all or if I simply have gradually adjusted from all my loader work.

Thanks for this comparison. You can go bigger in either brand and get something that will outperform the other. BX is better than X700 but less than the 1025r, B2601 is more than 1025R (about same as 2025R), but then the B2650/LX2601 is more than 2025R but less than ... it just keeps going. For my needs I am looking at 1025R/1023E and B2601 so this comparison is what I was looking into so thank you. If I could find a good dealer I might end up buying Kioti or some other brand just based on dealership (which I finding to be more important than the machine itself). Its looking like the JD and Kubota are relaying too heavy on the brand and less on suppling support, what a shame.

I like that the newer model comes with 435 quick detach loader. The hose manifold is awesome. I like Japanese made stuff, and preferred to buy from our my Kabota dealer. Hi Courtney,
One additional item to mention in the comparison between John Deere and Kubota. Fueling. Now if it wasn't for the government, fueling would be easier. With the introduction of the safety fuel cans these days which everyone hates, and are absolutely worthless, it is so easy on a Kubota to spill fuel all over the hood and below. I really like the fact that JD has the fuel fill in the back where it's easy to get to.
    Great Video as always!

I haven't had this problem. They carved away a fair amount of metal from the cap, so it was easy to access. I put a rag down, anticipating a spill, and had ZERO drips. No real technique, just easy to reach on the B2301 (same as the B2601).

I have a f915 front mount diesel mower I've had for 15yrs with those pedals that I mow around shrubs and trees and plowing snow using the forward and back pedals constantly and I LOVE THEM! I also have a Bolens tractor mower G series tube frame with the rocker pedal that I had first and worked Okay but never really stays in one place/speed. I like the JD better as your heel is on the deck steadying your foot better.
I do understand that the Kubota part of the foot is also steadied on the deck but the transition from forward to reverse looks like a lot more action/work/time.

When talking about lift capacity in the front end loader, which are class 3 levers, the farther from the boom pivot point the hydraulics connect, the less mechanical disadvantage (or more mechanical advantage) the lever has. From the video images, it looks like the John Deere boom hydraulics are connected lower on the front end loader frame and farther out on the boom (closer to the load) than the Kabota. This should give JD 1025R a mechanical advantage over the Kubota B2601 if the hydraulic force (pressure and piston size) were identical. It would also help explain (in conjunction with the straighter boom arms) why the Kubota lifts higher because the JD would need longer hydraulic cylinders to lift to the same height. It would be interesting to compare the distance from the boom pivot point to where the hydraulics connect and the total length of the hydraulic cylinders.

    Good morning.
Your right it is very hard to compare.
I have the best of both worlds.
I have a JD 1025R and a Kubota B2650. I use them both for very different purposes. The Kubota has a Cab and a front mount blower. Great for the winter. Nice and warm. Hahah
The JD I mmm belly mower and I use it in the woods for my fire wood. I was so impressed with it pulling out full length trees with the skidder attachment I have..
I don't like the foot pedal on the Kubota but I am used to it. I love the JD pedals.
But overall I am a little partial to Green 😊

From the what I've seen the Kubota BX series is terribly under-speced. I'm not sure why they did that, but every other 'sub compact' has higher lift capacities, better hydraulics, etc. The "small b" B2601 is what they should have released instead of the BX, which to me is just a super versatile lawn mower. Then you move to the "big b" B2650 (thankfully now called the LX26210 to stop the "b series confusion").
One thing I noticed in your video is that the B2601 has valve stem protectors on the rear tires, couldn't tell if they were on the fronts too. Does the Deere have those? To me, that's a simple, but awfully important, corner to cut in something that's designed to be working in the mud and limbs.

In the 80s/90s my dad got a Kubota and I used it all the time. It had a true clutch on the left and a lockable/unlockable left/right break peddle and a separate gas petal on the right side. In the middle there was a manual shifter with R, and 1-3 or 4 for forward. It also had a low/med/high speed gear. I never had a problem shifting gears and moving or doing work. Do users these days have arthritis or gout problems? Do they not know how to shift? If its for convenience, how many people are really going forward and back hundreds of times a day?

These two tractors are a fairly close comparison, except for the tires, the tractors are very close to the same size. Ya, the bx series doesn’t have quite as much ‘umf’ as the 1025, but it’s still a very good machine.

I feel like most people, such as myself, don’t believe that a 1025r vs B2601 is an apple to apple “fair” comparison. I’m curious about the comparison because I want a little bit more tractor than the 1025r.. the 2025r isn’t enough.. and the price jump to a large frame 2-series is a bit too far for me(also, I don’t need the horsepower, I mostly want greater loader and 3-point capacity, so the added complexity of the exhaust after treatment is a negative on large frame 2-series)
The B2601 seems to be that in-between step that’s missing from the Deere line up. My curiosity for this comparison is to see how much more capability you get with a B2601 for that modest $2500ish jump above a 1025r.

I like the mower, pedal configuration & plastic hood on Deere (& PTO HP/lifting cap. on the 2038R) but like the 3 speed gearbox & 3 point hitch on the Kubota. I wish Deere would've made the 2025R more like the B2601 - I'd probably already have one on order but am leaning towards a 2038R. Put a 3-sp. gearbox in and it would make that decision a lot easier.

On the treadle pedal. I like most prefer separate pedals for most things particularly mowing or pulling a rake anything where you seldom change direction. Even loader work I think the brain is wired for gas brake so having to move off fwd to reverse makes sense. But if you do heavy tiller work the treadle makes a ton of sense. One minute you can be pushing forwards to help get the tractor moving forwards on loose soil and the next second the tiller grabs into some heavy clay and tries to push you forwards. On a treadle you can constantly and continuously vary and respond with some reverse if the tiller is pushing you forwards. This goes away as your tractor gets big and heavy. I run the same tiller sometimes on a large geared tractor and you just ride the brakes lightly to keep the forward motion smooth as the tiller pushes. But on a little subcompact roots have you hitting reverse.
The other time I love it is backblade work. I do most of my snow with my backblade spun 180degrees in reverse. So I back up to the edge of the pavement while raising the blade as it comes off the drive to feather it out. On a treadle while looking backwards I can easily roll off reverse and pull away with no transition between pedals. Because my tractor has a very different reverse vs forwards speed high gear in reverse is a lower gear ratio and handles the blade perfectly. Then in forwards with out a shift I am in high gear to quickly set up my next pass. I have a fel with snow push but then I'm shifting down to lower gear to go forward and it is painfully slow in reverse so I use the same technique as I used on our old farmall plow backwards in reverse pop to 3 to get where you're going and let the reverse gear ratio be your low gear.
Anyhow see if you notice that running smaller tractors with tillers. I run a 5' forwards rotation tiller on a subcompact and it sure does push.

Comparing the BX and 1025 is as "unfair" as this. So I am glad you did this series. Fact is, Kubota made a very small subcompact in the BX and Deere went bigger. Those two are officially in the same class, but they are different enough in size that people don't go by it. JD was probably better at marketing, knowing people always want a little bigger. Kubota was true to its roots producing a very small, rugged tractor. Best of both worlds is the B2601.

Agreed, but I think it would be great to list all 4 tractors with their sales price. BX2380 is $15,000 John Deere 1025R is$18,000 B2601 is $20,000 and 2025R is???. I don't care what the tractor is called ( compact subcompact etc). You care about the work it could do for the price. Both tractors are great tractors and are able to do great work and have strong brand support behind them. The Kubota BX 80 series has a lower price point to get a first time tractor owner so that is a big advantage to me to go along with all of the 80 series upgrades. If you require the advantages of a 1025R then you can pay extra for those extra strength that that tractor provides but for me the Kubota gets my foot in the tractor door world with great capabilities.

Don't forget that Deere has offered the X700 series "super" garden tractors as well. If they weren't intentionally limited (and priced) to keep out of the 1xxx series turf, the X7 diesel 4x4 models would compete pretty well against most BX tractors. The hydraulics even work at idle. At one time, you could setup the X7's with 3pt hitches, Rear PTO, front loaders, and a whole line of heavy duty front mount attachments. The BX's advantage is the backhoe. Yup, tiny, but it's there.

You are right. The tractor models don’t directly compare. However, when I think about which two smallest models I’d buy, it would be the 1025R and the 2601. That’s why I think it is a good comparison. I don’t personally care what name the manufacturer gives in quotes either “subcompact” or “compact”. That naming is arbitrary. I also think that the manufacturers intentionally don’t have models that align, so each can do comparisons against the other brand to “win”. At the end of the day, what two models are you considering from each brand matters not whether they are called “subcompact” or “compact”.

The reason Kubota tractors FEL sticks out farther from the tractor than JD is because that makes it just that much more versatile. I think Kubota has taken that approach for some years. They might not have the highest lift capacity but their loaders on most of their tractors have high lift, good reach= good dump angles. There's much more to a loader than lift capacity, plus one must take into account where that lift capacity was taken from and the options/add ons to the loader. With that being said your number was a far cry from Kubotas number. Everyone you add more weight to Kubotas loader vs JD, because Kubotas sticks out farther, every pound causes a greater and greater affect on lift capacity. But really for the average home owner lift capacity isn't something you should be so concerned with. I would personally prefer a more versatile loader.

The problem with comparing the 2650 to any of these is size. The 1025 and the 2601 are still small enough to do yard work and not destroy lawns. The 2650 is just too big for that. It’s a great machine for what it is made to do, just a little too big. The way I see it is the BX is smallest and still a great home machine for smaller areas, the 1025 is just a bigger sub compact, the 2301/2601 is about the same size bigger than the BX 1025 difference. Bigger tires means bigger weight when loaded and a heavier machine. The 2650 is much bigger than the 1025 2601 difference and truly puts it into a different category.

I still think a 2025R vs. B2601 (& maybe 2032R vs. LX 3350) is as close to apples to apples as you can get. The 2025R is even $2500 more than a 1025R so that part is a wash, the FEL capacity on the 2025R is (very) slightly higher than a 1025R (prob. a wash), & the 3pt hitch capacity is significantly higher on a 2025R vs. a 1025R (prob. close to if not a wash).
I think it would come down to maneuverability, split vs. single brakes, lift height, steel vs. plastic hood, fuel fill location, serviceability, dash layout, lights, hydraulic options, pedals, swing arms, quick attach bucket, FEL/BH ease of installation/removal, BH capabilities, mower deck attaching, and last but certainly not least, the 3sp. vs. 2 sp.
If Deere went with the 3sp. & better swing arms, it wouldn't even be a question which one I'd be ordering (hopefully someone @ Deere reads these comments). I WANT a Deere but EVERYONE raves about those 2 features and so they ALONE have me seriously considering a Kubota.
