This song was brilliantly arranged by Michael Kaman and when paired with Kate’s amazing vocal you are left with the most wonderful song that will move your soul. Thanks Kate!
I cry EVERY TIME I hear this song from Kate!!! OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!! Wow....The tears are still coming down my face....oh my......man....sometime we forget about those moments with those we loved dearly that passed away and this song brings these moment up......and here we are...Still alive....struggling...learning....enjoying......celebrating.......wow.....and trying to capture the best moments with the ones we love now.....knowing in the back of our minds that any second we may not be here with them or they may not be here....wow...what a deep song......i'm a mess......I'm out!!!!
What an absolutely beautiful song and video. You cannot fail to be touched by it, it touches my very soul. Number 26 in the charts...if ever there was an argument to simply ignore the charts this was it. Thankyou Kate.
Yeah, the singles charts are deceptive, especially back in those days. Teens typically bought singles, those older who had more disposable income would buy albums. A person who had bought an album from their favourite artist didn’t really need to buy the 3 or 4 singles that might have been released from it.
One of my favourite Kate Bush songs. For me it's not necessarily just about people we've lost, but anyone who has touched us and contributed to the moments that make up lives. Beautiful and reflective and bitter sweet.
You were spot on, the last reference to Bill, was her lightning director, and at one of her shows he died in fall, which took Kate a long time to get over.
Such a profound and moving song from an artist of no comparison. Thank you for this moving and insightful reaction/analysis. The title of the song was always confusing. It is certainly deeply sad---but I think the 'pleasure' part of it is the acceptance stage we all reach with grief. The pleasure of memories.
There was so much emotion coming through your face as this song progressed. It was really getting to you. I listen to many of Kate's songs to meditate, relax, feel, dance and cry. Hope you listened to it later privately and let all that emotion wash over you.
You got the meaning right. In the song she looks back on her life and laments about different joys and sorrows. The "George the Wipe" reference is a studio technician that apparently erased a complete tape of one of Kate's recordings by accident (although its been said that Kate was pulling a practical joke on the guy, thus her lyrics "Oh God I can't stop laughing, this sense of humor of mine, it isn't funny at all"). Kate wrote the chorus "to those we love, to those who will survive" for her mother, Hannah, who was sick at the time of recording (who later passed away). At the end of the song, she mentions several people in her life who had died: "Maureen" was Kate's aunt, "Bubba" was Gary Hurst, one of her dance partners, "S'Murph" was her guitarist, Allan Murphy, "Teddy" was John Barrett, a sound engineer at Abbey Road studios where she recorded Never For Ever (they used to have chair spinning contests in the control room to see who would get sick first - Kate always won because she knew how to pirouette and move her head!!), "Michael" was famous film director Michael Powell (director of the movie The Red Shoes), whom she met on a snowy day in New York City shortly before his death from cancer in 1990, and finally, "Bill" was Bill Duffield, Kate's lighting director on her 1979 tour, who died in a tragic fall through a stage trap door just before the tour started.
Well, this song (and video) really packs a punch. It's sublime, like so much of her work. I remember seeing Kate's short film, The Red Shoes, in Atlanta back in 1993 or 1994 during its initial theatrical release, from which this video is taken. It was a limited run and I won tickets from a radio station promotion. I don't think there was a single dry eye in the audience at the conclusion of this clip. I didn't know about the background of all her personal references in the song at that time, but I understood the subtext and meaning of the song. It still triggers me now, whenever I hear the song or see this video.
This song gets me every time I hear it - it has been so cleverly constructed by Kate to show some of the important people she had lost but in way that so easily translates to ourselves and our own loved ones who are no longer with us. Incidentally, the one person who was mentioned but was alive when Kate wrote this was her mother, although she died soon after.
I've been a huge fan of Kate Bush since the very first time I heard Wuthering heights back in 1978 , completely blown away by the amazing voice I was hearing. This song , Moments of pleasure, is one of her most beautiful , emotional songs . Just like you reacted , every time I listen to this song it makes me feel so melancholy , in a good way , yearning for days gone by . Sad and happy at the same time , such is the power of this wonderful woman's writing , playing and singing. So many of Kate's songs to recommend , This woman's work , The man with the child in his eyes, The Kick inside , King of the Mountain , to name but a few . A huge body of work encompassing varied styles and genres , definitely worth investigating.
Man, you nailed it! Looking at death and those we have lost. She brings real emotion to her work. Poignant, personal. Makes you cry. Longing for the past, but looking for the future. We need to pay it forward while we live. Lovely choice I had never heard. Nice comments. Grief is love with no where to go (Anderson). [Kate Bush or Joni Mitchell anytime]
Beautifully sung and written. I love this song. But agree watching it again with the lyrics make you focus on the intent of the song. I love the old sock saying.
Thank you for reacting to one of my favourite songs and music videos. Very emotional ending with Maureen and the others in the snow storm. Absolutely beautiful! Interesting thoughts about guidance. Thanks!
This song. It gets me every time. My eyes are stinging with tears. I really appreciate the genuineness of your response to this song. Like you it rouses a sense of longing for those I've lost and creates a space to welcome the sadness of their absence as well as the warmth of their memory,
Yes we get sad cause our loved ones can't be here anymore .. That's a fact and it will never stop till we pass away it even doesn't get better if some time passes by.. But we have our memories even if it sounds stupid but that helps a lot, just thinking about the fine times that we could share with our beloved ones
I would add, a very honest reaction video, compared with some of the more ‘animated’ reaction videos on UA-cam. The song hits home for me. I won’t go into the reasons. This isn’t Britains got talent, ‘sob story week’. Thanks again.❤
Yes, all of the people referenced in the lyrics are real people from Kate’s life, most or all of whom had died. Kate lost her mother, to whom she was very close, around the time she was working on the Red Shoes. Much of the album reflects the melancholy and sadness she was feeling. After this, she didn’t release another album for 10 years, with 2005’s Aerial. At least partly for a happy reason, she had a baby and she took time out to raise him.
Kate said her mother was still alive during the recording of the song. Hannah couldn't stop laughing when she heard her own quote about every old sock meeting an old shoe. That must have been a very special moment, a short respite amid such a somber time.
I think you have to have 5 or 6 decades of life under your belt to really get the snow sequence. How people flit into your life and entangle into your life for a bit, then float out of sight... Maybe not, but it certainly was needed in my case. I certainly didn't fully get it 30 years ago. makes me cry now.
It's hard to not get emotional with this song. Thank you for your sincere response. Maybe you want to try 'A coral room' from the album Aerial (2005) some time. That song is equally deeply emotional. You may find it hard to find words after having listened to it...
Could be ... I read it was about a studio tech called George. Kate told George that he erased (wiped) an entire song while working on The Dreaming. Apparently, Kate and buddies were just fooling George (this sense of humor of mine, it isn't funny at all ...)
It is a very nostalgic type of emotional roller coaster. Very lovely reaction
This song was brilliantly arranged by Michael Kaman and when paired with Kate’s amazing vocal you are left with the most wonderful song that will move your soul. Thanks Kate!
This came back to my feed today. Of all days. My mom's birthday. Truly miss her. Happy Birthday mom. ❤
To be able to express the collective human experience is just the greatest art and a unique work of genius

Wonderful song so powerful. You cannot fail to be touched by its beauty and honesty. Can also help to heal grief too I think.

Beautiful
I cry every time I hear this song. Kate is such a brilliant songstress who has the ability to weave a tale that hooks you in.
Great video

Thanks for your reaction to her. This song in general is so deep and beautiful just the way Kate is.
Thank you.
this song gets me EVERY time...

This is one of her best tracks, a great reaction and I have cried a few times listening to this.
Kate has a great voice, she really does get you going emotionally. Thanks for posting this video, very nice!
I remember her singing this track live on a show called Wogan. She was a guest and she absolutely smashed it an amazing performance.

Love your heartfelt reaction and your instinct that those folks had passed on. Nice your watched this version with lyrics. Deep, indeed.

Love. Be Loved ❤️
You are not alone. This moves me every time I hear it.
This is the song I want played at my funeral
Me too Charlie 👍
Hands down, the most ‘rip your guts out’ song i’ve ever heard.❤
The older I get the harder this hits.
SO KATE BUSH!!!!!
Just really pulls at the heart strings doesn’t it ? I was filling up along with you even though I’ve heard many times.
I would add, a very honest reaction video, compared with some of the more ‘animated’ reaction videos on UA-cam.
The song hits home for me. I won’t go into the reasons.

Never realised i'd screwed up the title of this great track. Now corrected xx
You are very perceptive. I am enjoying your reactions and analyses.
This song makes me tear up every time. The entire album is excellent.

Such a sad song
my favourite on The Red Shoes

You did good, I can't get through that one.
Just FYI, your video title is Moments of Passion, but the song title (which you correctly say in the video) is Moments of Pleasure.
Thank you I'll correct that x
George the wipe refers to a case of wine
Could be ... I read it was about a studio tech called George. Kate told George that he erased (wiped) an entire song while working on The Dreaming. Apparently, Kate and buddies were just fooling George (this sense of humor of mine, it isn't funny at all ...)
...wait...what? I’m going to die?! Bummer!
Yep. Check your birth certificate, it’s got an expiration date on the back. Not many people realise this, but it makes it much easier to plan things.
Are the englishes cold ? Are they no sentimentals?
