2 Legends of music
This song is so powerful and the vocals are out of this world.
Beautiful, tender song about a family man on the brink and his wife full of gentle strength. So powerful and so quiet.
to me the eclipse is his darkest hour... when he's on the bridge and looking down, just watching the river. And she is the one who pulls him back into the light, into life
Kate Bush is an amazing vocalist on her own too. Worth a listen.
One of her songs, 'Running Up That Hill', came back and topped the charts when it was featured in the recent TV hit, Stranger Things.
@@rk41gator My cat is Kate Bush. I adore her.
His live “ In Your Eyes” performance from his Secret World Tour is the most heart-beautiful thing you’ll see. ❤❤
Seeing that performance in 1993 was the highlight of my concert experience. What an artist!
Peter's live performance of “In Your Eyes” from Secret World Live is a must-see and may change your life. Peter is my favorite artist.
Kate and I are pretty much the same age and I've followed her from the beginning; I was one of the millions who bought her debut single, Wuthering Heights, back in 1978. Kate is a unique talent and this collaberation with Peter is outstanding both musically and in its impact emotionally on so many people whp have found hope through the lyrics.
As a typically shallow man (in my twenties when this was released) I know that I, along with most of her male fans, would happily have swapped places with Peter for the chance to hug Kate for 3 minutes or so (like I said, shallow male...). I can say for certain that during my training days in the Royal Air Force, mine was not the only locker in the barracks decorated with her poster (for those of a certain age I need only say "blue leotard"). I wish I still had that poster as originals sell now for £70+!
I'm totally with you there. The first poster in my bedroom 😉. Wuthering Heights was such a great song with an interesting video 😁
The eclipse represents the Sunshine disappearing in one's life, .......such a powerful song,......keep strong to all going through a hard time, God bless, love Australia
Men need to know that they are needed and that their family is proud of them!
I’ve seen many reactions to this song (I dig these two artists so I follow them) and this is the first reaction I’ve seen where you actually call out the eclipse in the background. and you question its symbolism. I’ll return.
Couldn’t have said it better.
I cannot watch this video or hear this song without crying. When it came out, my dad was falling apart and I was trying to get him to hold on. He gave up. It is such a profound song.
Uuugh.... I'm so sorry.
Peter Gabriel went through a really hard time finding sobriety and Kate really supported him during this time. You should react to some of her music, and Peter's Sledge Hammer is awesome too!
Nice try little troll
This song was inspired by several hardship stories but mainly by the American Depression. The open lyrics “In this proud land…” was the title of a book Peter read about the Depression, which included photographs of hardship taken at that time by among others Dorothea Lange. Because of the American backstory Peter originally wanted to record the song with Dolly Parton. But her office declined and so he turned to his good friend and previous collaborator Kate Bush. And most people are glad that he did.
Nice observation on the sun, the lyrics, the tempo change, and other deeper insights. Very real ans satisfying reaction.
The stress eases and he feels the love...its in the tempo getting more upbeat.
In the comments to the official music video a great many people credit this song as basically saving their lives, a very notable example being Sir Elton John who in 2014 BBC Documentary about Kate Bush, mentioned that this very song helped turn his life around.
Now outside of North America Kate Bush is very well known, it was only due to the latest series of Stranger Things and use of her song "Running Up That Hill" from her iconic "Hounds Of Love" as a key part of the plot, led to a massive increase in exposure in America, both in streaming charts and Billboard charts.
This ultimately resulted in Kate being inducted into this years "Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame" on her 4th attempt.
I've been a Kate Bush fan from the very beginning (1978) and I was very pleased that a whole new generation of people had been made aware of Kate's music and had an opportunity to explore her extensive musical catalogue.
As, I encountered more and more peoole who were encountering Kate for the 1st time and I was writing a similar comment on each occasion, I decided to prepare what I describe as a background summary of Kate Bush to bring people up to speed... which I include below...
======
A quick background summary of Kate Bush, Kate started writing songs at about 11 years old, adding more complex lyrics from 13 onwards. By her late teens she had written about two hundred,, the family made demo recordings of about fifty of them, in an attempt to attract the attention of record companies without any success. Until a friend of family passed the demos to David Gilmour (guitarist for Pink Floyd), he was interested and ultimately paid for time at studio with session musicians to make professional recordings of three songs from Kate extensive catalogue which he selected. It was those professional recordings that he passed onto EMI executives when he was asked about new talents - when EMI listened they wanted to sign Kate up immediately, but they had to wait until she had left school, Kate signed for EMI when she was 16 years old.
EMI paid Kate a retainer which she used to improve her piano playing, voice lessons and also dance & mime lessons from Lindsay Kemp (who had also taught David Bowie to dance). Kate also fronted a pub band that one of her brothers had put together. Eventually EMI called Kate back to work on her debut album "The Kick Inside" although two songs were taken from the earlier professional recordings that David Gilmour had paid for - notably one of them was written when she was just 13 years old and is regarded to the one that convinced EMI to sign Kate..
Kate's debut single "Wuthering Heights" was released in January 1978 and it was so different to everything else in the singles chart and became a massive worldwide hit, reaching number 1 in a number of countries around the world and charting highly in others. When it got to number 1 in the UK, Kate became the first female artist to have a self written song reach number one, this was the 1st of numerous records and milestones that Kate has set in the UK and album charts.
When "The Kick Inside" was released later in 1978, it sold a million copies in the UK and reached number three in the album chart.
Kate is multi-talented a singer/songwriter, musician, dancer, record producer, video producer and director. Kate was also very heavily involved in the staging of both of her concert tours - 1979 "Tour Of Life" and the 2014 concert residency "Before The Dawn". Kate has inspired/influenced countless numbers of artists/musicians who followed her, she is considered to be a musical icon and a pioneer.
Kate was credited as a co-producer on her third album "Never For Ever" and was the sole producer on her fourth album "The Dreaming" and every one of her subsequent studio albums.
If you're interested in listening to songs by Kate Bush, I and many other Kate Bush fans will be happy to provide suggestions to you.

Very astute! Many reactors don't even notice the changing Sun in the background. Important symbolism!
Our daughter died, and ever since, my husband has been a functional depressed person who, as he stated, is just living to die. I am hurt and broken, but as a woman, i see how sad and grieved he is and it breaks my heart even more. Sometimes it is so hard to watch him in his depression as i struggle to keep myself from drowning. But i love him, and i keep holding him and begging him to please come back to the living with me and not give up. Its been 13 years. He is my high school sweetheart. The struggle is real, but i wont give up. I hope he remembers we still have us.
(I'm not an English speaker so perhaps I mangle my words a bit) but please try to hold on. Brother in law committed suicide. So I gathered my three nephews. Teens. Matrasses. Funeral. You have to try to stay strong. The only friend I could talk to (the rest was brilliant and so sweet and caring don't get me wrong). But it was hell for a long time. And the only one I could talk to (who experienced the same with her boyfriend) died a few months later of brain cancer (she was so bloody young, . in her forties so mate broke down (his little sister). The only thing I can say is this; it will get better. It's now 5 year ago and although time will not heal the wounds entirely (and that's a good thing) the pain will soft a bit and you'll get in a more ' gentler/safer//accepting/less painfull' state. We can now even joke with the kids about dad a litte bit. Talk about the good /funny/typical/idiosyncratic/loving things and all that without that immediate almost physical seering pain in your heart. You owe it to yourselves. Bless you and please keep strong
Your a good woman,......im so sorry for your loss,.....God bless you and your hubby to fight through your battle,...love from Australia
Great great great song. Love these deep cuts
Astute observation about the eclipse. Every man should be this lucky to have a lovely wife like Kate, reassuring them.
Гениально в своей простоте. Вы прекрасны!
Ignore the eclipse. Just listen to the singing and lyrics. So beautiful and touching.
If they included it in the video they obviously meant something by it and wanted you to think about it. Let him react to what ever he wants!
It symbolises the struggle in the song.
I agree - visual that things may get dark for a while but brighter times will come if you can hold on.
This was written about the Great Depression. Sorrowfully beautiful
Yes, but it can apply to anyone going through hard times.
You’re a good man.
Richard Tee's piano on this song is amazing...
Melancholy
I love my husband and I definitely need him! My KING.
I could be totally wrong, but I’ve always thought the eclipse symbolised Peter getting further and further into the depths of despair. Kate and Peter are holding each other closely as Peter sings about how bad things are while Kate tries to keep him grounded. Then just as the eclipse is full and the world is at it’s darkest and most dramatic, Peter moves back, putting space between him & Kate singing about contemplating suicide by jumping off a bridge. He then goes back into the hug, re-establishing that closeness. Peter then sings about moving on and the eclipse starts to end, bringing light back in. It’s either one of the simplest, yet best videos I’ve seen or I’m reading way too much into it.
This the second time Kate Bush lent her vocal assist on a Peter Gabriel song. The other is Games Without Frontiers - she's the one singing in French... ua-cam.com/video/3xZmlUV8muY/v-deo.html
I've always thought this song was about a soldier coming home from war.

Digging in the dirt...
I highly recommend watching the Secret World live version of this song with Paula Cole. It also has a much longer section of the ending you liked.
Paula has a beautiful voice but I don’t think she engaged as well with the song’s sentiment as Kate did. There were times when I thought it was the song being used to support Paula’s singing rather than the other way round.
Also, the part where he went home and all the trees were burnt to the ground... people were cutting them down and using them for fuel.
@stever below has the backstory. The eclipse is his current situation, despair. As his lady sings her support the eclipse moves on and there is some hope returning. So glad you 'got it'. Many often ignore the images. Gabriel likes metaphors, as does Genesis his first band as a lead singer. They can get some great grooves, too. (Phil Collins was Genesis' drummer and sang lead when Peter left) You know THAT 'In The Air Tonight' Phil Collins.
If you’d like to hear some “ethnic drums” as you described it. Listen to Rhythm of the Heat by Peter Gabriel. Super powerful buildup.
I’d love to see you react to the live version of ‘In Your Eyes’
Secret world live is a great album. More world influence
