One of the most beautiful songs of all time. In the lyrics, Kate looks back on her life and reminisces about different joys and sorrows. The "George the Wipe" reference is to a studio technician that apparently erased a complete tape of one of Kate's recordings by accident (although the truth is that Kate was pulling a practical joke on the guy, thus her lyrics "Oh God I can't stop laughing, this sense of humor of mine, it isn't funny at all"). Kate wrote the line "to those we love, to those who will survive" for her mother Hannah, who was sick at the time of recording (who later passed away). At the end of the song, she mentions several people in her life who had died: "Maureen" was Kate's aunt, "Bubba" was one of her dance partners, Gary Hurst (who died of AIDS), "S'Murph" was her guitarist, Allan Murphy, "Teddy" was John Barrett, a sound engineer at Abbey Road studios where she recorded Never For Ever (they used to have chair spinning contests in the control room to see who would get sick first!), "Michael" was famous film director Michael Powell (the man with the walking stick, who she compared with actor Douglas Fairbanks). Kate met Powell on a snowy day in New York City shortly before his death from cancer in 1990, and finally, "Bill" (turn the lights up) was Bill Duffield, Kate's lighting director on her 1979 tour, who died in a tragic fall through a stage trap door just before the tour started.
The spoken intro is not actually part of the song and does not feature on the album track. All the music videos for the Red Shoes album singles are taken from the footage of a 40-minute film called ‘The Line, The Cross and The Curve’ that Kate directed. In the film that section of spoken word is a transition piece between the songs ‘Lily’ and ‘Moments of Pleasure’. The call-outs at the end of the song are commemorations for those dear to her who had passed.
One of my absolute favourite tracks from Kate. The composition is beautiful, but also the way it resonates - we can all appreciate those moments in time (that make up our lives) and those who made them. Bittersweet. Great, heartfelt reaction. :)
Check out "The Man with the Child in his Eyes", written by Kate at age 13 and recorded at 16 - it was one of the demo tracks that secured her record deal. Also The Saxophone Song
One of my all-ime favorite song of Kate Bush Ever. There is another song that effects me like this song does....let me find it for you....giive me a minute!!! Great reactions!!!
8:06 Bill Duffield who was the Lighting Director on Kate’s “Tour Of Life”. On April 2, 1979, after a show at the Poole Arts Centre in Dorset, the equipment had been loaded for the journey to the next date, and he was having a last look around the stage area to make sure nothing had been left behind. Someone had left an open panel in the flooring. As he crossed the stage, he tripped and fell 17 feet onto a concrete floor under the stage. He was rushed to the hospital but died a week later. The song from her “Never For Ever’ album "Blow Away (For Bill)" is dedicated to him. - Kate Bush Encyclopedia
Great reaction. Definitely listen to 'The Man with the Child in his Eyes ' it's a lovely song and she wrote it when she was very young. For the use of instruments I also recommend Cloud bustling. I think you'll enjoy it.

Bloody hell the woman’s cursed!! 😅
Literally every-time I hear her sing “here come the hills of time” I get a lump in my throat.
Me to X
"Hello Earth" part of the "Ninth Wave" off of "Hounds of Love" album is just stunning!
I'm sure, he'll love "Hello Earth", along with "And Dream Of Sheep" (also from "Ninth Wave" = B-side of "Hounds Of Love")...
I feel like if someone listens to that, they need to listen to the entire 9th Wave

From the video 'The Line, the Cross & the Curve" which contains music from her album "The Red Shoes"
No wonder you love the orchestration on this song. It was arranged by the late Michael Kamen. A genius in his own right.
Ah I gotta look into him. Thanks for letting me know
