@yuki cross then... I hope you’re not a tattoo artist. Or at least not one that focuses on lettering :l
@yuki cross I get that, and it’s totally fine, it’s just alarming when someone who is both a tattoo artist and in a competition misspells something permanent. It would be like a NASA engineer with dyscalculia messing up calculations on a launch, like.... you can’t take that back now, yikes.
@yuki cross I dont think its serious just make the canvas sign saying that its spelled correctly alot of artists do that nowadays and who doesn't check the spelling on something thats going on them.
As a female with a bunch of tattoos, if YOU want a non feminine tattoo that’s what YOU should get. It’s your tattoo!
Totally agree. There was an episode where Dave said he thought a cute girl who got a tattoo from Jesse walked out 'a little less cute' because he didn't think it was feminine enough... Like, it's HER choice. Some guys are so sexist.

Yeah I really like Dave, but that comment sucked. He didn't even mention how good the tattoo looked, it's so clean and really impressive considering how big the piece is and how little time he had to do it. That's a textbook example of sexism, he judged the art based of the gender of the person wearing the art, not the quality of the actual art.
Imagine getting your first tattoo pretty detailed.. and it has a misspelling?? ooooof lmao... and its on tv??
I mean... That is mainly the reason why I wouldn't get a tattoo with any writings ever no matter what. I'm not good at noticing writing errors so I don't trust myself and if I don't trust me like hell would I trust an artistic

And they are already extremely nervous and need to be out at ease about what they’re about to go through. They don’t need bad vibes from the artist on top of being nervous.
Right! I’m about to scour the web for a tattoo artist to do my first tattoo and now I’m thinking about how they must be feeling about giving me my first tattoo...

They say it cause its bad for the competition, cause theyre def one of the hardest to tattoo on, especially in this cause theres a time limit and if the client ever has to stop cause of pain thats hurting the artists chance. Not saying its smart to turn away clients with first tattoo. Also they are being ridiculous in the show but it makes sense in this competition
@Jackson-cd3mv virgins usually don't exactly know what they want either, don't know many different styles, new/old school, so communicating is hard 😂 (my 1st I did alot of research and thinking)
@jakkbatt4711 my first (and only tattoo to date) was a flash, Egyptian eye 🤣🤣 and guess what? I still love it. My buddy was getting a new tattoo, and I went along with him. And I've always wanted one myself, but didn't know what to get. But I saw this in the flash book, and I knew I wanted it, because it actually meant multiple different things for my life. Now my plan is to get more symbols, almost in a hieroglyphic style, each one representing a different significant point in my life. Plus, this one eye on my leg is looking mighty lonely these days 🤣 but I still love it. No regrets.
But yeah. I still stand by my opinion. Yeah, virgins are usually harder to work with. But they need their first tattoo to even get any kind of experience. A good tattoo artist would be able to find a way to work with their ideas. Not just turn them down for being "too difficult" for them to handle.
Dude's complaining about clients and having to tattoo virgins? You might be in the wrong field

Melanie Jane i don’t think i’m real life they are as hesitant. when it’s a time crunch, you don’t want to tattoo someone who might possibly handle the pain bad.
Everyone's a tattoo virgin until they get a tattoo though. He is pushing away potential clients.
And it doesn't even matter if its not their first tattoo, some people can handle more pain than others. They can be "virgins" and do better than a non "virgin".
That’s so sad that the client says “it’s amazing”, while the artist is saying “this tattoo sucks” .... that would make me feel bad about getting a tattoo.

@Greg Machen Muslim
they are nitpicking in this show. Very few tattoos will be 100% flawless, it's more about how noticeable the flaws are (and or how ugly the design is) that matters. A spot where the line doesn't connect by a micrometer, or some random fine line blended in too much is really not a big deal and most people never even notice them on their own tattoos, let alone other people noticing them.

Some of these artists mindsets are very discouraging. I want a tattoo, but not if this is how artists secretly think.
Dont let this discourage you. Most tattoo artists are pretty cool people. This show is just entertainment, its not very... reputable if you know what I mean.
Yeah, it's fake drama. There are lots of artists that are really cool, down to Earth, and reasonable.
Most artists are really nice and work with you. They want you to be happy with your tattoo. This show is just drama.
its not usually like that! go to a few different ones and pitch them your idea, talk a bit and see how yall vibe. their style and skill i obviously important but the human connection aspect is too! if you feel the vibe is off, keep looking! youll find the right one
Some may be acting dramatic because they're in a competition and want "easy" canvases because they want an easy win. Sometimes the size, style and details that the client wants can't all be completed well in 6 hours. I think it's a mix of factors but primarily because its on TV so they need drama and that the tattoo artist can't give what the canvas wants within the constraints. However, in real life, tattoo artists have time, they are more comfortable and adaptable because they recognize that tattoo is about you and not them.
I am so impressed with the pocketwatch one. The flower and the opened watch forms a silhouette of a heart. Absolutely A+, gorgeous detail.
These tattoo virgins are super brave getting a big tattoos as their firsts. I got my first tattoo couple months ago and honestly it wasn’t that bad, but wouldn’t have imagined getting a tattoo as big as the ones on here as a first. Props to those guys.
My first tattoo was a half sleeve from my friend who was a tattoo artist, Sadly he was murdered last year was thinking of getting his name tattoo'd on one of the blank spots of the sleeve but decided to leave it as he did it.
@@QrazedGaming Fuck man, im sorry to hear. I’m glad he was the one who did your sleeve.
what’s so bad about a woman getting something „not feminine“ tattooed on her body? it doesn’t make her any less „cute“?? the tattoo she got was a societal commentary. what, women can’t have opinions on society?
Yeah the judges were being sexist as hell. I adore the tattoo, it's a colorful new-school take on an old-school idea.
Gotta "love" reality TV. This formula doesnt really work
That episode was awhile ago when it’s still seen in society as that. Nowadays people don’t really care
Ashleigh Marie oh, when was the episode?
yogurt coconuts 2010 I think from memory. Could be wrong tho
What is with the obsession with giving the girls "feminine" tattoos? It feels uncomfortable of how narrow their perception of femininity is
I thought Jesse's tattoo was pretty feminine to me tbh
I'm glad someone said it!
A lot of women have big rough tattoos that totally mess up their feminine body imo. The female body is so beautiful and curvy and sensual, that anything big and colorfull can really make a difference (for better or worse)
@@atb89 If a woman freely decides to get a tattoo it can't "mess up" her femininity because guess what? Women get to define their own femininity and aesthetics and wether you think it's hot or not really does not make a difference.
i agree!!! what women actually consider that when getting a tattoo?? so weird
6:31 That is sick. Sure the crown won't last as long as the rest of the tattoo but that's easily fixed
and 8:51 the use of turquoise is insane. I need to try some of that
2:06 why would she say that? "im nervous too" that doesnt help the canvas. Why would she say something that would make her client even more nervous? who does that help
At the end of the session she also said “ugh it’s not good” like ???? Why would you say that in front of her? That poor woman lmao
@@Vanilla_Mexican She is going to have "ugh it's not good" running through her mind for as long as she has that tattoo. some of the artists on this show forget the canvases are people, a lot of them don't watch what they say in front of the canvases. so unprofessional

She was the first contestant to lose where she already doubted herself and already lost confidence in herself
Aaron, I'm sorry but that inverted rose looks TERRIBLE.
i gasped when i saw it
It reminds me of a blue cabbage
Such a shame because that shade of cobalt blue on her skin tone is stunning and a normal rose could have been beautiful tracking her shoulder joint!
I liked the idea & color of the rose. But desperately think it needed a black outline at least around the petal layers.
Yup looks like a huge blue blob
10:23 is the COOLEST most BEAUTIFUL reason to get a pocket watch tattoo.
I have a pocket watch tattoo myself, styled to look like it's coming through my skin. It's stopped just short of 4oclock. When i was in the Middle East I had 3 insanely close calls to buying the farm. Mine is to show that Death didn't quite get to #4 before its time to get me ran out.

Didn't realise how misogynistic the tattoo world was smh. Not only did the judges bash it for looking 'unfeminine' but in other segments, you have men have bruised egos when women do better than they do, you have male tattoo artists change what their female canvas wanted to be more pastel and soft, you have people ogling boobs instead of being professional, and a thousand different tattoos of women's faces that are slammed for being not pretty enough.
Tbf, every "un pretty woman" tattoo was ugly because of technical reasons, not that they weren't hot enough. But the language does show that kind of culture in the tattoo world.
Edit: a word
❄
They had a team-tattoo of faces, where they called The woman, tattooed by a woman, ugly because of a missing dip between nose and forehead. It was so disrespectful as it was a beautiful rendition of a “non-caucasian” woman by a non-caucasian woman on a non-caucasian man. It was SUCH A RUDE comment!
A lot of this is for the cameras, but the judges saying shit like that is reflecting a VERY old school attitude. This is why as a client you've gotta research your shops. As a woman, I always make sure the artists I'm working with will give me what I want and what's going to look really good, regardless of whether they think a woman should have specific imagery on them or not.
@@DUNGEONcraft113 Great argument, you clearly have an IQ of at least 5

Artist: "so am i"

I facepalmed so hard when I heard that, like bruh that’s the last thing you wanna say to someone getting their first tattoo
6:25 "walk out a little less cute" and if i wanna walk out less cute? :/ what if i want a giant bloody mass on my forehead huh? I hate how they bash the artists for that the people wanted
:/ = =/
6:31 I actually really like that tattoo. Never been tattooed so wonder what its like, but I feel there is just no way I could sit there for six hours straight of getting tattooed, I think I would lose self control of what I do sooner. At least without multiple breaks. If I'm in intense pain I may not even last a full minute, I dont know just how painful those tattoos are. I'm actually really impressed by the patience of people who get tattoos. As well as by their courage, not for the tattoo processes itself, but for all the issues you can risk when recovering from a tattoo and how easy it is to mess up, like just by picking on scalp which you may do subconsciously.
I hope there is a an option for more impatient people to have the same tattoos divided into multiple sessions (in general, not this show).
I feel like the lack of an outline made it look so much better
@@ethanbrock5438 Agreed, I think it would've looked too 'cartoonish' with the black outline tbh.
I have my experience which may or may not help. I got my first tattoo 2 years ago and it was way less scary and painful than I expected. I got my inner forearm tattooed and at the most it felt like semi deep cat scratches. I felt like it stung more than hurt, and for the moments it stung more I was able to take a breather. If getting a tattoo is something you’d really want, I’d consider looking at a tattoo pain diagram to decide where your first should go. And then use that experience to gauge if you think how could handle a different area/larger piece. I heard for some larger pieces/tattoo’s with longer time’s, artist’s may offer or insist on breaking up the appointment between separate sessions. Where they’ll do maybe the outline in one session and then the color/shading in another. I just know from my experience that the saying “once you have one tattoo you’ll want 100 more” is 1000% true.
@@Meepthegeek Yeah, I was really surprised how little it actually hurt! Just like intense pins and needles where it was actually happening, not the screaming and hollering you see in films & comedies.
I like how they rip into all their tattoos but when the actual canvas is there, everyone's tattoo are fantastic and fits your body perfectly.
For my first tattoo, I drew my first dog's name (Tiny) and a heart around her paw print. I completely designed it myself, was very satisfied with how it turned out and the tattoo artist just transferred it to my skin and turned it into a tattoo. To this day it's one of my favorite tattoos I have, and now that Tiny has since died I treasure it even more. I would love to one day get a memorial portrait of her face next to it on my chest.
Drawing your own tattoo is really cool if you have the ability, that’s a special way to represent your bond with Tiny.
yeah doing tattoos to tattoo virgins as one of the first episodes was not a good idea.
I came very close to passing out during a tattoo. Crazy part is I was in a full conversation with the artist at the time and I wasn't breathing enough. Went from full conversation, pain was fine, to my eyesight caving in and nearly going out. Ended up eating a few Skittles, smoking a cigarette, drinking a bottle of water and finishing.
I think your first tattoo should be a small one so u know what it feels like, and then if you don't mind the pain then go bigger later on.
I got my first tattoo the other day, and I plan on doing that. I started with one part that can stand on its own, it took a little over 2 hrs, and now I've decided that I definitely want to go back and get the rest of it done! But it's nice to have that choice
My first tattoo covered my entire forearm. Pain is relative and it tickled, and I’m a pretty skinny guy. My thinking process is go big or go home
Go big or go home
Yeah my first one was a big knee cap piece 😂 go big or go home. pain is temporary
Yeah, kinda wish I did that because my first tattoo was an entire sleeve and that shit hurted
I'm not denying it's there, but I can't see the cut in Ron's
OMG I thought it was just me haha I was thinking to myself "Where's the cut??"
I was staring at it sooooo hard and i still couldnt see it
It's really hard to see cause it's in the solid black part, but it's rough
This doesn’t really count as a test of fundamentals as it is a test of speed. Art takes time.
THIS. I have always thought they should have had a different limit instead of the time, maybe a body part restriction or certain size they couldn't go over. but everyone works at a different speed, and each person getting tattooed feels pain different, and timing the tattoo just makes people rush and not produce good PERMANENT work
@@cloudnado67 i thought it was so stupid. some of them had SUPER detailed tats and some didn't..
THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING. Of course the tattoo is gonna look weird because your putting a time on it makes the artist feel rushed. Let the artist work and show they’re true potential.
But a better artist is putting out better quality in less time. Plus dont artists charge by the hour? Would hate to get a tattoo of a small butterfly that took 7 hours and cost me a stack
Imagine being a canvas of some competition that's rushed. Yikes.
Totally surprised that the Pocket Watch won. That was a really amateur drawing and the watch lacked details. The oval at the top (the bow) was just slapped on top and doesn't look connected to anything. Not a good tattoo.
Quitus Maximus was it just me, or did she say 9:02, but that was not 9:02?
I swear the pocket watch wanted 9:02, but that is NOT what was tatted.
george Richan He tattooed a completely different time and both the clock minute and hour hand are the same length so you can’t tell if one is pointing out the hour or minute

Funny how the virgin canvasses did better keeping it in than experienced people who got a lot of tattoos, but eh. That's just my opinion
For anyone here who is also a tattoo virgin, a tattoo needle feels like someone is carving into you with a knife. It fades to a dull burn over meaty areas like a thigh, but over ribs and hips you feel every line as it happens. Especially over ribs you also really feel the vibration of the machine.
I definitely agree with the vibration. For me, it just felt like someone was scratching me really hard for hours lol
Got my first tattoo after Thanksgiving of 2021 a little above my wrist. Pain wise, 6/7 out of 10. Felt like having a sunburn repeatedly scratched. 40 minutes to complete but after it was done it was like a dull numbness. I think the worst part was removing the tagaderm.
They feel like a cat scratching me but honestly, nothing nightmarish at all. I fell asleep during my 4 hour session cause I felt sooo relaxed lol
I would describe it as burning hot cat scratches in less painful areas. It’s not like it’s even close to the worst pain I’ve felt but it definitely hurts
Do you have a tattoo on the back side of your forearm? I really want a piece there but I’m nervous about the pain level. It’s meaty so it’s gonna be less painful than other areas but I still don’t know how much it’ll hurt
“Just keep sitting still you’re sitting like a champ” *camera pans to him sleeping*
I remember getting my hannya flash piece and I fell asleep during it and the artist kind of freaked out thinking I passed out, but man getting tattoos are so relaxing to me
I’ve laid down for a couple of my tattoos and I wish I could’ve fallen asleep. That would’ve been perfect for me.
