  • When I got the 4ms SWN, I was expecting a wonderful 'pad machine' because it offers six wavetable voices that each can be set up as a separate voice and played polyphonically. At first I was a bit disappointed because of the sound. It's not the module's fault, because the sound you hear in most videos is also what you get. A wavetable uses very short 512 sample snippets that roughly add up to one cycle (like one sine wave). So it can sound as a conventional sine, block, triangle and saw, and everything in between. The SWN is an extremely powerful and feature packed module, but if you want to 'escape' it's either conventional or metallic sound, you'll need to hook it up with other modules and treat it as a 'raw' oscillator. So I personally feel it needs reverb, a filter and FM. What happens then, is pure bliss. A wonderful 'pad machine'.
    Update:
    Honesty forces me to add that I sold the SWN but I also admit that I regret it sometimes, especially when watching this video and the BladeRunner one.

    I could listen to these sounds all night. Superb sonic quality. Thanks for the Øchd trick ! CV CCW and a gate ? As simple as that ? I'll give the VST a try as well.

    I have done a bad thing… I’ve wanted the SWN for some time, and when one showed up on EBay at a decent price, I bought it. Two weeks before Xmas. One week before I get paid. In secret. I would say I hope it’s worth it, but it obviously is!

    • @CinematicLaboratory

      I am not the right person to assure you because I sold it. However, if it shows up somewhere at a decent price, I' may get it again. So I have really erratic feelings about SWN. I managed to do some amazing stuff, but the sound of wavetables always bothers me. Maybe I'll just load basic wavetables instead of the chainsaws and meatgrinders...

      However, with the French Fluctuations it's absolutely adorable - and now I have Desmodus, MM filters and Starlab.

      @@CinematicLaboratory I’m sure it will play nicely with the QPAS and Mimeophon- and I’ve also just bought (why the SWN was a ‘bad thing’) a 1010 Lemondrop, so I have an infinity of potential wavetables to play with!

    Super nice. You said full CCW on Ochs for sync, but it seems it is full CW in the vid. ?

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 роки тому

      Very perceptive! I missed that. Anyway, according to the manual the attenuverter works like this: The input is added to the Rate. Applying positive control voltage can force the frequency of each individual LFO to exceed the range accessible by the Rate knob. Applying negative control voltage can force each individual LFO to completely stall, similar to a track and hold circuit. So I guess sending a trigger when the attenuverter is fully CW it will push the rate to max for a few milliseconds and then continues as usual, sounding like a 'reset'. I'd suggest to just give it a try with the setting showed in the video.

    Thanks for your detailed response to my previous question! I promise this will be my last (until you get your subscription system online): When you talked of creating feedback loops with the SWN and Eowave filter, how exactly did you do this? Is the output of the SWN sent to the input of the filter and the 4 outputs of the filter connected to 4 of the VCA or pitch inputs on the SWN? Do you mult one or two of the filter outputs and send that to your effects / mixer? Thanks for your beautiful work.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  Рік тому

      I think I connected a few of the filter outputs back to the SWN to do amplitude modulation. But it's a long time ago and I no longer own the SWN.

    I’m curious about this thing, regarding your comments on it not fulfilling your “lush pad machine”. Wouldn’t any wavetable oscillator module act in a similar way? I mean, to create the lush pads wouldn’t that require effects like reverb anyway? I’ve been looking at different wavetable vcos and this one seems like my favorite so far. Have you tried others like e352? Maybe I’m wrong about all this and there is a module that can fill all those needs? Anyways, great video and would love to hear your thoughts on this. Have a great day!

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  3 роки тому

      As a matter of fact I sold the E352 because SWN has six morphing wavetables instead of two and it can do pretty much everything the E352 can do in the 'wavetable' field. On the other side the SWN can do incredible things when modulated, but also provides incredible modulation out of the box. Cross modulating it with FM is awesome.
      You're right, all wavetable oscillators work in similar ways and may sound a bit cold on their own. But the same applies to a simple oscillator :). It needs a filter and a reverb to get the most out of it. In my humble opinion, the SWN is the most powerful wavetable synth I know of and it can do amazing things. Not to mention recording your own wavetables. However, I'd love to see a wavetable synth that supports longer waveform cycles so they'd capture a bit more of a complex waveform so it retains the character of the original sound. Maybe I'd write 4MS for a firmware update suggestion...
