    Great pattern.....when shaping fly's in this fashion, I have found it very useful to go buy you a small electric beard trimmer. This saves times and gives the fly tier more precise control when shaping the fly. I use the beard trimmers on big salt water flys and even smaller fly's like you are tying here. Electric beard trimmers are very beneficial in the fly tying world.

      Daniel.....when you buy one spend the extra money and get the rechargeable ones. You can get a cheap one that is rechargeable for around 20 bucks. I came up with this idea when I cut my finger really bad and couldn't use scissors. I had a big order going to keybwest Florida on some tarpon flys and as Inwas struggling shaping those fly's my wife came out into my man cave and said why don't you use your beard trimmers to do that! So the moral of the story is sometimes its very wise to listen to your wife! I eventually went and bought a pair to keep at my fly tying bench. Use them just about every session. Thanks to my wife.....my fly's look much better and it is faster as well.

    • @alexrawleigh3167
      @alexrawleigh3167 11 місяців тому

      Coastfly....the only negative using beard trimmers in your case is the noise.....when filming your sessions you might have to mute the camera while using the trimmers. They are not that loud but I imagine the cameras you are using to film are very sensitive as far as noise is concerned. I will say this though...once you try the beard trimmers, you won't go back to scissors. I really enjoy your channel Coastfly and continue to learn a great deal from even though I have been tying for years.

    Really nice color combination and a simple fly to tie with just a couple of materials. Looks like it will work great with a trout Spey setup. Next we need a tutorial on your tattoos :-) Thanks for sharing.

    I really liked your comment about why people tie. For some it’s just to make a quick lure for others. It’s a bout the hobby. I fall into that second category.

      Michael....what individuals like Costfly don't tell the audiences...especially those thatvare just starting out is fly and jig design is not just a hobby or business....it is an addiction. I got into jig design for smallmouth bass and crappie and before long I had several individuals contact me about salt water fly's. Seeing that I am a freshwater fisherman I didn't have that much knowledge in the salt water world. I gave it a try on a few salt water fly's and the rest is history. I do not know about Coastfly but when I get behind a vise nothing else matters. Excellant stress reliever and most definatley very humbling when I or one of my customers catches a fish of a lifetime on a fly or jig I designed. The only advise I could give a beginner is....be careful because this hobby can turn into an addiction. Trust me.......there is no "rehab" center that can get you out of it. Tight lines and God bless.

    I wonder when finding active fish how much color matters. Adding red to resemble bleeding. The bone color of so many lures today. Bubble gum and creamsicle color pattern that is a go to also. Mylar flash for the sunny days. And then I wonder what flies are designed to trigger reactive strikes, as opposed to matching what is in the ecosystem, beyond the large variety of hopper patterns; especially for larger species or ocean-run fish. I think the moment you see a brown streamer, everyone says that's a sculpin pattern. I think its eyes on hair and not much else. Maybe silhouette.

    • @Coastfly
      @Coastfly  11 місяців тому

      Well i believe that fish Will see bright colors from further away and come closer to investigate - giving more strikes in the long run. But in terms of just a touch of red marker on the side of a baitfish i dont believe it has an effect. So silhouette is probably the most important factor of all. And that combined with something a fish Will see from further away is the right combo in my opinion.
