I do agree-you can walk out of college with a 4 year degree in say operations research or general studies. If you have no idea how to job interview, write a resume, apply for work, zero internships/zero work experience, have no clue how to spin "I hauled garbage for 8 weeks at 6 flags summer after my sophomore year of college" into something like "I was responsible for maintaining a clean environment for guests and employees" your gonna be screwed. An individualized major can be very useful if you do it right. Some schools just don't have degrees in certain majors that other colleges do. They often do have the classes necessary for such degrees, but haven't created degree programs in them. A good example of this is financial engineering, which is a useful and employable degree. Most colleges do have the classes necessary for a degree in financial engineering, but undergraduate financial engineering degree programs are not very common. In cases like this, an individualized program in which you gain a useful degree not usually offered at the school can be a good path.

Shane, this ought to be your flagship video. Not necessarily because it's the best, but because with this video it's easy to understand what you're trying to accomplish. It's taken me awhile to get it myself, but as you continually say, you're not trolling people, but attempting to stop them from making a terrible mistake. The degrees mentioned here are really not that different from some of the bogus "research articles" professors try to foist on the world to justify their continued employment. With these useless programs, the professors are hoping enough suckers will be tricked into/sign up that the university will keep them on as faculty meaning they won't have to get real jobs. This video illustrates that perfectly and it's the perfect introduction to your series. Watching this will definitely help people understand what you're trying to do.
ok lets be honest here..this guy made me laugh when he said youre probably praying your degree is not on this list..and then he says the degree i was partially interested in. regardless i want to say that this man gives pretty legit good advice! thanks man. i am glad i listened to this before deciding what i wanna do.
I almost went to a university for a Hospitality Management Degree. I changed to business economics. The restaurant industry is brutal (going to a walk in freezer back to a hot kitchen, stand all day, deal with crazy ass customers that want their food according to their needs not what's on the menu [I want grilled calamari with eggs on top] and fluffy a.k.a their pet wants to eat too), and is getting worse in the sense that most restaurant managers want to cut staff to the point that one worker does it all. During Covid-19 is not looking good for restaurant workers.
I get that. In fact, when someone forgets to give me a plain burger, I usually just pick off the crud I don't want just to avoid making their day worse especially if they are nice to me.
I have a friend who is currently studying puppetry in a professional prestiogious film academy. Drama was his first choice but instead he went into puppetry. He says he's pretty happy and they're basically doing the same as drama class with some puppetry classes from time to time. In my country most actors and directors HAVE to go to this film academy if they wanna have a chance in the film scene. Also education is free here.
How about a video on majors that sound good but are actually terrible? Everyone OUGHT to be able to figure out that puppetry is a bad choice. But on the other hand, that restaurant manager one fooled me... I'd have thought it would be a useful one.
I like what he said about the dance thing. I was thinking of maybe minoring in it, but he has a point - they dont rlly care about education, they just care about ur actual dance talent. I just wanna focus on being the best dancer i can be without taking some random classes to fit the minor 😆
The only reason you would want to go to college for dance is if you wanted to teach it in a higher academic setting. By this I mean if you want to be a college dance professor or a dance instructor at a higher ranked dance school :)
Okay, One big thing i've learned from your videos is to avoid any degree that has "General" or "Studies" in it. Thank goodness Graphic design doesn't have any words like that because that's what I'm going for x'D

@@ShaneHummus what do you think about those two majors i suggested , I heard you recommend business and languages were not on any list really , so what do you think ?
Honorable Mention ... Biblical Studies Degree. I spent two year pursuing this useless degree. Love reading the Bible and eventually saw in the fine print Thus saith the Lord "Thou shall not go in debt to get a Biblical studies degree."
I can see why someone would want to teach middle schoolers specifically. Some teachers are in it to help the kids get through life problems; no better age than middle school for that. It is weird tho; it's better just to get a secondary education degree in some specific area
Where they do that at? Wow. I had a few young adults asks me about college and what to do and when they told me what they picked as a major my eyeballs fell out of my head. I tried to save them before they got to deep some listened. Others, well let's say they are looking for their next degree or next gig. SMH Thank you so much Shane for your public service!
Turf grass is a weird one. By itself it is pretty bad, but I've known several people who have gotten an associate's in it to them get a bachelor's in horticulture. After that they usually end up in some sort of landscaping company or manage a golf course making decent money. It is what you make of it.
People make it seem like your trolling as a way to justify some degrees out there, but in reality its all just information you provide with a lil entertainment they can do what they want with that information. One thing though is that not only do you provide information but you also give alternatives to the degrees that can be better options depending on situations which is very helpful. This is the kind of guidance counseling needed in middle school/ highschool I know i would've benefited from it 6 years ago!
Culinary arts isn't useless. If you want to work in restaurants, sure you can build a career without a degree, but cooking careers have a shelf life and a degree cuts 75% off of the first half of your career. For large food service outfits like Sodexo or hotels or cruise ships you could start a career based solely on a culinary arts degree, no problem. Sure, making cafeteria or buffet food isn't the most glam career but being able to call in sick, have benefits and paid vacation, and in many cases be able to transfer to different places around the planet just because you want to experience it is makes it a pretty decent career if you've got creativity, a thick skin, and a strong back. Beyond that, being a young person that can whip up the tastiest meal some folks will eat all year with the shit they have lying around in their pantry has some significant social advantages. I got out of the industry and am back in school, but every single one of the guys I worked with that did stints under Thomas Keller and the like had a formal culinary education. Restaurant and Hotel Management is even more straightforward. You can absolutely break into the hotel business with one of those degrees and it's pretty unlikely a larger nicer hotel would consider someone who didn't have significant other related experience that didn't have a degree.
The Puppetry degree reminded me of something I saw during the "Occupy Wall Street" protests. One of their goals was the forgiveness of college debts. This goof was videoed complaining that he had spent $35,000 on a Masters in Puppetry and now couldn't get a job, so he thought that his debt should be forgiven or something. That's right folks, a Masters in Puppetry!!! My brain hurts!!!!
Glad I dropped my psychology degree before getting into more loans it’s useless if it’s only undergrad degree if your going for your PhD or becoming a psychologist it’s not useless I dropped because I wasn’t able to handle grad school work or PhD work if I can handle the work I would have became a psychologist to help those in need
Decision Science IS A REAL THING, you can call it risk and uncertainty, as it was in my class, it is heavily based on statistics, probability, and large sets of information. Very useful in Civil Engineering and Economics to make decisions.
I never even heard of any of those degrees, man people forgot that a piece of paper doesn't actually indicate how good you're at something. Btw I just found you're channel and I can't stop watching your videos!!!!!
Hey! One thing!! The certified dietary manager certificate or even getting your associates in culinary arts will land you that foodservice and culinary management job, without you needing to even go to a 4 year college! They also start off pretty well as far as salary! Just a tip!!
A lot of these you can just learn on your own. No need for a degree. You just have to plan it out. Majority are businesses with skills. A book will NEVER teach you the business. It’s all theoretical. You have to actually DO IT! That is the real education! I love planning events and weddings and fashion designing but no need for a degree. Just practice, plan, and DO! Also I have heard of a “ marriage counseling degree” lmfao what do you think? Your the best SHANE! Keep up the great work!!
In Switzerland, Middleschool teaching always is raking in six figures. You’ll need a diploma for it and two or three bachelors in a number of fields. Also the burnout rate and number of teachers leaving is so high, You’ll get a job guarantee. The maximum is 150K at the highest state pay level, coming with eleven weeks of holiday.
You can make a decent living in cosmetology nowadays especially if you go independent from a salon. People who go into hair, nails can make a comfortable living especially if they do all kinds of services like extensions, coloring/highlight services. There are also seperate certificates for things like nails, eyelash extensions but the cosmetology degree allows you to do be able to do all those things. A huge thing about these degrees/certificates is to make sure you are educated on health safety standards. You are still touching people's bodies and what not and possibly working with chemicals/tools. It also saves your ass from being sued by some defaming idiot. It may not directly serve society in the big picture but they are skills that are in demand and it does make people feel happy. It is good for people who are creative types to convert their artistic talents.
Its true. Cosmetology studies are not bad at all. You can study make-up, nails electrolysis. Some only require 2 years. Real world applications include working as an indepdent artist, salon, wedding contracts, film sets and videos. Beauty industries are always profitting. Way better than puppetry and gender studies. Cosmetology also teaches you better understanding of the skin and safety standards. Very important fir prebenting fungal infectiom or damaging people's bodies or faces.
I've been going down a rabbit hole of your videos since I found your channel, wishing it was there when I was choosing my majors. Have you done a video about what to do if you just discovered that your degree is worthless? Say, someone already graduated with a degree they 100% believed in back then but it turns out impossible to find jobs with/ the ones they do find pay really low and are insecure? Something short of going back to college that answers what they can do other than baristaing at Starbucks?
Got a BA in Mass Communications in 1979. After getting a job that paid 50 cents over minimum wage, I went back to school to earn a BS in Pharmacy in 1987.
How about a begging degree? Learn to attract strangers pity: how you manage a beggar family, how to keep your self inflicted wounds open, How to fake a disability.
Not that this video triggered me at all, I've actually went on a complete binge watching A LOT of your videos that made me subscribe to you and I love them. They're really eye-opening and I wish I had that kind of advice in high school. However, the cosmetology/culinary degree I have to strongly disagree on. Culinary yes, is useless, you don't need a degree to work in a kitchen or open up your own restaurant. But a cosmetology degree is actually not a degree, it's a license, and it's REQUIRED if you are to practice in any state. It typically takes 2 years to achieve so it'd be like an associate's degree. Each state has their own requirements of how many hours of schooling you need to complete that covers infection control, diseases, electricity, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, shampooing, cutting, styling, coloring, braiding, extensions, chemical texture services, waxing, makeup, facials, nails, etc. You need to pass a written and practical exam, continue education, and renew your license every 4 years. Now is a cosmo license really worth it considering the average income and lack of benefits in the field? No. But is it necessary to have? Absolutely. Which makes you think that hair stylists, makeup artists, estheticians, and nail techs ought to be making a hell of a lot more money. So how can a cosmo license, something that's REQUIRED to have in order to practice within the field be worthless compared to ALLLLLLLLLL the other degrees out there that you don't really need in order to work in the field?
@@ShaneHummus do you need to reread what i posted? because it's not a degree, it's a license. idk where you're getting your information from where it says you need a college degree or where degrees for it are even offered. it's a 2 year program for a license in cosmetology at trade schools.
nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d13/tables/dt13_318.30.asp It IS a degree, check the NCES list of degrees, it's about 1/4 of the way down. A rare degree, but it is offered. Cheers!
@@ShaneHummus do you realize how dated that is? it's from 2011-12. it lists 1. is that seriously your only source of data? the college or university that even offered a bachelors or masters in it probably doesn't even exist anymore. if you look into it more, you'll see that it's practically a degree considering how many hours some states require you to do to obtain a license that it could technically be an associate's or bachelor's degree but it's still just a license.
@@ShaneHummus You still think cosmetology is doing your own make up for selfies and culinary arts are comprised of taking pictures of your food though.
I would only obtain the cosmetology degree if it was two-years and if you were passionate about being a professional make-up artist, owning a salon/make-up business, or teaching the subject.
As someone who is in the culinary field. Culinary Arts can be very rewarding but the hours suck. If you are executive chef you can make 6 figures. I'm talking Michelin starred chef. But chefs don't look for degrees they look for experience.

ca n you make a video about nursing, your content is S tier in the usefulness tier list
Thanks. I might make one for Nursing. Stay tuned
Agreed! My message wasn't as clear as I wanted it to be in other videos. Cheers!
ok lets be honest here..this guy made me laugh when he said youre probably praying your degree is not on this list..and then he says the degree i was partially interested in. regardless i want to say that this man gives pretty legit good advice! thanks man. i am glad i listened to this before deciding what i wanna do.
Culinary arts and cosmetology studies together?! What the heck xD
😂
I teach high school, got a master's degree in education. Don't regret it a bit and I'm happy with my pay (although it could always be more)
I thought Dave Ramsey was joking when he called out people for having a puppetry degree :O
Right 😂
And lesbian dance theory 😭
I was sitting on the toilet when you said "you're probably sitting on the toilet right now"

haha perfect timing
“Smashing the Like Button Studies” hasn’t failed me yet!!! 😎😎😎
Thanks for studying that 😁
I despise that study. EVERY person on UA-cam says that. I've yet to "smash that like button" after they said it, for the 5th time during a vid.
That's a good shift. Good luck!
At this point there might as well be a Tik tok sciences degree
Let me hear yours Mohamed 😁
I have a friend who is currently studying puppetry in a professional prestiogious film academy. Drama was his first choice but instead he went into puppetry. He says he's pretty happy and they're basically doing the same as drama class with some puppetry classes from time to time. In my country most actors and directors HAVE to go to this film academy if they wanna have a chance in the film scene. Also education is free here.
Hey man! Good job with the intros. Lovin all of your videos. Not skipping ads because you deserve it a lot man.
Glad you like them!
Going through a doctoral degree in Smashing-the-like-studies is the best career decision I have ever made!
I second that
I didn't even know some of these were even legitimate degrees colleges actually offer
It's mindblowing
How about a video on majors that sound good but are actually terrible? Everyone OUGHT to be able to figure out that puppetry is a bad choice. But on the other hand, that restaurant manager one fooled me... I'd have thought it would be a useful one.
Okay, let’s face it, those Colleges are an Evil Mafia.
Sadly
I like what he said about the dance thing. I was thinking of maybe minoring in it, but he has a point - they dont rlly care about education, they just care about ur actual dance talent. I just wanna focus on being the best dancer i can be without taking some random classes to fit the minor 😆
The only reason you would want to go to college for dance is if you wanted to teach it in a higher academic setting. By this I mean if you want to be a college dance professor or a dance instructor at a higher ranked dance school :)
Okay,
One big thing i've learned from your videos is to avoid any degree that has "General" or "Studies" in it.
Thank goodness Graphic design doesn't have any words like that because that's what I'm going for x'D
You can go check his art list tier degree

Shane awesome video and seriously funny 😂 love the roasting of all the useless degrees, I am with you 100% and have known people who’ve gotten bachelors degrees in theatre and things like mass media and racked up their debt and now can’t find jobs 🤦🏻♂️
I think I should change my major now🙂💔I entered it because of my score but I Don't have any passion for it , and I am really confused if I should take up business or Japanese language 🤔
Good to know we're on the same page
@@ShaneHummus what do you think about those two majors i suggested , I heard you recommend business and languages were not on any list really , so what do you think ?
Honorable Mention ... Biblical Studies Degree. I spent two year pursuing this useless degree. Love reading the Bible and eventually saw in the fine print Thus saith the Lord "Thou shall not go in debt to get a Biblical studies degree."
taught at middle school, it’s not as bad as everyone thinks. middle schoolers are nice
SMH Thank you so much Shane for your public service!
kinda surprised that they can be called degrees, nanny degree? bruh moment.
Right.. Some are just mere hobbies
@@ShaneHummus for rich ppl
Turf grass is a weird one. By itself it is pretty bad, but I've known several people who have gotten an associate's in it to them get a bachelor's in horticulture. After that they usually end up in some sort of landscaping company or manage a golf course making decent money. It is what you make of it.
Thanks for sharing Chase
Nannying degree, I'm dying. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I know right 🤣
Ryuguji
People make it seem like your trolling as a way to justify some degrees out there, but in reality its all just information you provide with a lil entertainment they can do what they want with that information. One thing though is that not only do you provide information but you also give alternatives to the degrees that can be better options depending on situations which is very helpful. This is the kind of guidance counseling needed in middle school/ highschool I know i would've benefited from it 6 years ago!
Exactly Eric. Thanks for seeing it that way

I thought I heard it all, but when you bust out with the nannying degree, I literally dropped my phone.
haha
If u like being around people and aren’t afraid of hard work. Consider becoming a nurse❤️. A lot of community colleges offer nursing programs!

I fucking hate how youtube is now recommending me college garbage when i am applying one right now.

Something much worse lol
@@ShaneHummus I'm going to get an individualized degree in the gender of dancing puppet nannies
LETS GET THIS TO TRENDING

Glad I dropped my psychology degree before getting into more loans it’s useless if it’s only undergrad degree if your going for your PhD or becoming a psychologist it’s not useless I dropped because I wasn’t able to handle grad school work or PhD work if I can handle the work I would have became a psychologist to help those in need
now what or which field you are being studying .....?
Decision Science IS A REAL THING, you can call it risk and uncertainty, as it was in my class, it is heavily based on statistics, probability, and large sets of information. Very useful in Civil Engineering and Economics to make decisions.
I never even heard of any of those degrees, man people forgot that a piece of paper doesn't actually indicate how good you're at something. Btw I just found you're channel and I can't stop watching your videos!!!!!
Exactly!
Hey! One thing!! The certified dietary manager certificate or even getting your associates in culinary arts will land you that foodservice and culinary management job, without you needing to even go to a 4 year college! They also start off pretty well as far as salary! Just a tip!!
Thanks for your input
@@ShaneHummus of course!! Hey, can you please cover the best certificates?
What’s the mid career pay on “smashing that like button studies”?
6 digits 😁
I kept thinking it couldn’t get worse, and after every degree it just kept getting worse 😭
What about a degree in advanced breathing? 😔😔
Naughty Ninja haha
Right Deema!
In Switzerland, Middleschool teaching always is raking in six figures. You’ll need a diploma for it and two or three bachelors in a number of fields. Also the burnout rate and number of teachers leaving is so high, You’ll get a job guarantee. The maximum is 150K at the highest state pay level, coming with eleven weeks of holiday.

honestly ur channel is amazing it's helped me so much thank you🍃
Happy to help
They may as well also bring in a nursery education degree
Bro... a video on just Management degree's i.e MBA, MSC in management,MEM,MIM etc please ....!!!!

Hi Shane, I like your content. I love watching your videos.
Awesome, thank you!
Most restaurant managers don’t make much. I’m a server working 23 hours a week and I make relatively as much as my managers.
What to do if your degree is worthless but it's your passion?

Shane Hummus - The Success GPS lol 😝
Well if you only need a certification then why get a degree for it? Cheers!
The more a degree focuses on people, the less it pays.
The more it focuses on tech and engineering, the more it pays.
lol ....... that's why it pays more like it's everything
I would only obtain the cosmetology degree if it was two-years and if you were passionate about being a professional make-up artist, owning a salon/make-up business, or teaching the subject.
I can't believe Columbia University has that degree.
Right.. Scammy
U r so great for helping others so much

As someone who is in the culinary field. Culinary Arts can be very rewarding but the hours suck. If you are executive chef you can make 6 figures. I'm talking Michelin starred chef. But chefs don't look for degrees they look for experience.
I want to major in Breathing Science or Grass Studies. Actually I want to major in Puppetry Science from Berkeley.
Haha I should probably make a video about made up degrees and let you guess which ones are not real
@@ShaneHummus degrees that sound fake but are real 🤔
The contemporary dance degree isn't to be a dancer. It's to be a dance instructor.
