I agree with almost everything! Definitely feels like the quartet is split into two duologies, I honestly still enjoyed where the story took a turn but it was very different to the beginning and I would say perhaps it got too over the top and messy however it always kept me on my toes. The plot is one of the strangest but most unique I’ve ever read. And omg I agree about it not being the slow burn I wanted, like it was a slow burn but at the same time not really? Like you said it felt like wasted potential, I feel like a lot of people would consider thorn and Ophelia as a slow burn couple but my expectations for slow burns are probably too high 😂and you’ve made me want to get the audiobook now, I like the extra touch of giving Archibald and American accent it suits his character!

You're right, it definitely kept me on my toes haha! I 100% agree that it's so strange and unique, and that's why I was enjoying it and hoping that the last book would nail the landing. Exactly, it's slow burn but it's not at the same time lol if certain things at the end of the second book happened later, I think I would consider it fully slow burn, but I feel like they never really got the proper development because they were rarely around each other and their interactions were always rushed by outside forces. They got too few quiet moments that make a slow burn really work for me

I give it a 8 because I looooved the story I honestly didn't mind that the romance was like 10% of the whole story. The tension was delicious. There were characters that I looooved and those that I haaaaaated which I think shows what a good story it is. Many say the different atmosphere between two halves of the series was weird and ngl i was a bit confused but I adjusted and all was well again. I love it when plot is so interesting that I wouldn't mind not having romance. Ophelia my girl went through hell and back constantly. She is Beyonce and a survivor. I have three husbands two are obvious and the third is the amnesia god dude...Idk he was so pathetic I loved him. I will probably reread it because the story was very fun imo. The ending had my blood boiling 😅

I loved the tension as well! Yeah, with the romance, I would have been fine with more or less, but that much was just not the right amount for me haha definitely such a memorable and unique story!

The ending makes me want to light things on fire why why would it end like that I’m so unsatisfied… but the books are good 8.5 out of 10

Okay i don’t know where to start. ( Iam French, so i might make mistakes) I totally agree with you on the fact that the first books and the others have a different vibe. I also think that it was darker than expected ( it did not bother me because i am not a teenager anymore but if I was like 16 I would have been traumatized ). I feel like we kinda share the same opinion on this books but I also feel like I enjoyed them so much more than you did. Maybe it is because I read them in French ( and I really wonder how they translated god and eulaila’s family name and stuff like that ).

(I forgot) I am also disappointed by the end. I don’t know about u but I loved Ophelia and thorn. The end broke my heart. And the last book was really weird. I enjoyed it but I could have been less weird ( I think). And also thank you for your review.
It is a mess but thank you if you read it

thank you SO MUCH for commenting!! I was thinking about this series recently. Is it published as YA in France? Or I guess a better question is, how does the age categorization work there and where does this series fit into it? Because it is quite darker than expected, it seems like it doesn't fit too well into how US/UK publishing categorizes Young Adult books. Despite being disappointed by the ending, I still do think about the series a lot and there are so many things about it that just felt so fresh and interesting to me!
I think translation is so interesting because yeah, what if I did feel differently because of the translation? How would I even know, because if I did learn French and read it that way, would my perception still be colored by the English translation? I just find all of that very interesting to think about haha

I love them too! I just think they had some wasted potential. I do love a good heartbreaking ending, and this one definitely fit that for them!

yes it is published as YA in France. I don't really know how the categorization works but i think it is the darkest thing i've read from the YA section. And for the translation, i think it depends if it is well done or not. One time, i read a book from an american author and translated in french, and some sentences were weird or made me cringe. But usually, famous books have a good translation.
