It was 1984. He left between the 9th and 10th seasons. As did Eddie. He didn't want to do it without Eddie. And while Eddie technically was a cast member in 83-84, they filmed a show before the season started consisting of solely Eddie sketches and interspersed throughout the season. He was almost never present, and Joe lost his heart in the performances and bailed before the All Star Season of 84-85. A shame, honestly. But I understand at the time.
What's most impressive about this impression is that Joe did this in 1982 when Dave wasn't a huge star yet and there wasn't a lot of appearances to come up with to an impression of Dave. Norm and others did their impressions in the 90s when Dave was one of the biggest stars on TV and had a lot of material to work with.
Joe Piscopo’s David Letterman impression was sneakily good, capturing Letterman’s quirks in a way that was ahead of its time, almost predicting the rise of meta humor.
Joe is trying to give off Bill Murray, Andy Kaufman energy, and the audience doesn't seem to buy it. His Sinatra impression on SNL was good, I'll give him that.
Joe first played Letterman on SNL 2 months after this appearance. He did it three times in total. After this, SNL went exactly 13 years without anyone doing an impression of Letterman, until Norm Macdonald started with his.
Norm Macdonald spoke to Dave after he did his own Letterman impression....according to Norm, Dave said: "Yeah, your impression is fine...I have no problem if you keep doing it. There was one guy who did an impression of me that I didn't like....Joe Piscopo....because that guy ain't funny".
@@carlodave9 I sense your sarcasm. I thought it was just fun light-hearted humor and I’m a fan of Letterman. But he didn’t just smile stupidly.. it’s in the jaw and the pitch of the laugh. I’m sure Dave has his own reasons for not liking it but that’s comedy for ya.
Piscopo had some talent but you can see his ego oozing out of every pore. To be fair to him, he's not much older than 30 here and he really was one of the big comedy stars at the time, and wouldn't peak for another year. Sure, in retrospect he was the second-funniest guy on the least funny SNL cast of all time, but who knew?
I think you're looking at it the wrong way, but I see how you could. With Charles Rocket's F Bomb, SNL was HOURS if not MINUTES away from being canceled. Joe and Eddie were the rudder of the SNL ship and sailed her through the show's most vulnerable and terrible times.
He is actually a pretty good drummer too. I always thought he was funny, especially his impressions and sportscaster roles. Him and Eddie Murphey were the only 2 good ones from 1982 SNL. I think just because his post SNL career in comedy wasn't as big as Murphey, he tends to get flak...but he's a legend in his own right...a staple of early 80s popular culture.
He let Eddie's success go way too far to his head, that's it. He's still a successful radio host of (unfortunately) Right Wing radio today in NYC. And Frank Sinatra Sundays. I could never say a bad word about Joe because he and Eddie single handedly saved SNL at its (still to this day) lowest point. I really wish he would've hosted at some point, he is in my top 25 SNL performers of all time.
Why all the Piscopo hate. He is a talented guy, super representative of the 70s, 80s and early 90s. From talented musician to sketch comedian to bodybuilder. Likable guy
Aw, that's sweet. He has a kid, little Joey. Less than 10 years later he divorces then marries Joey's babysitter, Kimberly! He even wrote this embarrassing song dedicated to her. Yikes!
thought this would be a demo of how thin-skinned Letterman would be, But that was a rather insulting impression, love Piscopo, but real obnoxious in this, Looks like he was on smak.
He did sort of do Dave as a cross between Dave and 'planet of the apes', which was odd. Physically, he wasn't that dissimilar from will ferrell, who is far more popular (but there are still some that don't like Ferrell). I don't think either of them were ever really stand-up comedian types. Will is a bit more low-key in his behavior, whereas Joe (I think genuinely) was constantly giggling, almost 'trying too hard'. So I think a more low-key, deadpan type persona would have worked better for Joe.
@@monkeyb1820 I was looking at old Mad TV stuff, and was noticing how much Will Ferrell, is like Mike Macdonald, and thinking that Ferrell had to had watched a ton of M. Dave demonstrates his polite laughter skills.
Crazy that he was willing to call out how Puerto Ricans used to LOVE to steal hubcaps.
