2014 Honda Grom Oil Service (Filter/Spinner Cleaning)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 жов 2013
- This video shows the entire process of a typical oil change on a 2014 Honda Grom (MSX125 in Europe/Asia). The oil is drained, and both the filter screen and oil spinner are properly cleaned.

Just a quick tip. Cover the exhuast in a aluminium foil before draining oil so nothing gets onto pipe that will burn later.
thanks for the informative video. You might want to consider facing the bike so the camera doesn't have back lighting from the garage door.
I'm at a loss to understand how anyone could give this a thumbs down. Superbly explained.
To keep the balance in the force....
1990 i would have toutqed the case with a spec and slso include the torque spec for the drain plug
Really thorough video! I'll be bookmarking this for when i do my oil changes. Thanks mate!
I love how thorough ur videos are man. Keep up the good work :)
awesome instructional video! thanks! can't wait to put this info to good use when i get my Grom.
9 years later and i still sometimes come back to the video
Thanks for taking the time to do this. Would like to have known how much oil you put in at the end and how you checked the oil level when through.
It´s a very nice video where you can see every step how to make an oil change :)
Good video man! You did a good job!
Great video! i liked the tip for bumping the oil spinner bolts, In the past i would have used an impact driver but i think it might be heavy handed for such a little guy
Super Thnx!
you can also wedge a penny in between the 2 gears
So instead of buying a oil filter you have to buy 2 gaskets...
You don't NEED to buy the gaskets, also you don't need to clean the screen and the spinner every oil change. The gaskets are $10 for both from the dealer...
@@PanditaP still more work and costly than buying a filter. a stupid design if you ask me
Thank you for all that information. Super helpful. I appreciate it big time dood
Great vidéo. Thank you !
IF those 10 bolts for the crankcase cover are all exactly the same size, ya don't need to organize them in a particular order. Yes it's good practice habit in case you're removing something and the bolts AREN'T all the same size, but whatever.
6:38. It is IMPORTANT to note that the screen is meant to go in only ONE way. The thicker end always faces out...meaning it is always going to be closest to the crankcase filter cover going towards the outside of the vehicle.
Do u clean the oil spinner and replace the gasket every oil change?
Your videos are so informative and entertaining! Can't wait to get mine!
I can't remember if I already commented on here before, but I suggest a magnetic drain plug also. It'll catch metal particles before they reach the screen. I'm coming up on 1000 miles and am planning on doing the above job as well as checking/setting the valves.
when should the second oil change be done I'm going to do the screen as well kinda of nervous
Is permatex blue medium strength good for the oil spinner
Just for an added note : you can buy an aftermarket clutch cover that rids the spinner and screen and adds a oil filter you can replace
Thanks for sharing your video. I'm about to do the 4,000 kilometre service. Apart from cleaning the spinner, do you suggest any other areas I should focus on to make sure the job is done right?
Make sure to get the internal pre screen and the spinner. Also remember that the oil level is checked by putting the dipstick in without screwing it in. You just need to set it in the hole to check the level.
Yeah that is true. I just haven't made the effort to purchase a bulk pack of them yet. I will when I remember to though.
You live in Olathe! Me too lol. Noticed the city trash can.
Do you think it would be fine to replace gaskets every other oil change?
The crankcase cover's gasket is considered to be the RIGHT SIDE, official part# is 11394-KYZ-900. If you fine a honda grom engine gasket and it only costs 1 to 3 bucks. That is NOT it. That is the left side which you probably will never need to replace in more than 50k miles easily. Right side costs between 7 and up to 20 bucks. You're welcome :D
Where do you recommend shopping for the gaskets? Ebay?
The spinner and filter screen is done at what interval? 1,000 , 6000, 12,000 km?
What's the mileage interval for an oil change? What type of oil do you use, 10W30?
i would also add that the condition of the oil @ under 500 km was almost alarming.Only a bit of gasket goop but just a ton of filings.Wish i had changed it sooner!
just put a soft rag around the return spring then it wont scratch any parts. i just got a grom and i was wondering where is the oil filter. lol i need to get the shop book for it.
Thanks for the video, I just finished up my oil change. But when I re attached the clutch cable there is no tension in the clutch handle. If i start it in neutral and switch gears the engine cuts off. Not sure whats going on, any ideas?
You just need to adjust the clutch cable at both clutch handle and the cable-end
how oftan are you guys changing the oil ect? ive been doing it every 500 miles....( new to biking)
Have you rerouted your crankcase breather tube?
Nice instructional video. All I need now is a Grom. Maybe I missed them but I didn't hear the torque specs for the crankcase cover & drain plug.
I never measure torque of those when installing on my personal bikes as the values are very low, but per the service manual:
Drain plug is 24Nm or 18lb ft.
Crankcase cover bolts are M6 and, though the manual does not specify the exact torque for these bolts, it does reference other M6 bolts with a standard torque value of 12Nm or 9lb ft.
Note: Though it says 18lb ft on the drain plug I'll point out that similar sized drain plugs on other aluminum engines are recommended as low as 9lb ft and as high as 20lb ft. Most typically I've seen values closer to 12 to 14lb ft. On my personal bike I would not torque to 18lb ft. I would choose 12 or 14lb ft as an approximation of the torque I apply. It's your choice if you want to go with the Honda recommendation or a different torque value that you choose.
where can you buy the gasket and crush washer and filter? dealer?
Don't tell anyone else, but on my personal bikes I don't *always* replace them either. I look at how much deforming occurred from the last usage and make a judgement call. Truthfully though I rarely use one more than twice since they are so cheap. You can pick up a bulk pack of 10 or 25 for just a couple dollars.
what size crush washer am I looking at buying here?
Is Honda Grom same as Honda MSX in Thailand.......?
thanks for demonstration, great job
+TOMMY PO Yeah, they're all the same.
Informative but what about the oil left in the left side of the motor because you did the whole thing on the side stand! Draining and checking the oil should be carried out with the bike upright. When replacing the gasket run a light smear of grease on both sides. This will help removal when changing.
Could you not use an Oil Extractor ?
Hey man when should I do my first oil change? I have heard 50 miles, then the full service you just showed at 150 or 200?? Or should I do it all at 50 too?? And do you happen to have the size of the crush washers and gasket id #s?
I appreciate any and all help, i follow your dodgerider channel and on the forums im gr0mkid89!!
Thanks again brotha your vids are crazy helpful. Already did my airbox mod thanks to you sir!
The first oil change isn't required by Honda at 50 miles, but a lot of Grom owners have felt it was beneficial to change the oil early to remove the large sized early break-in particles from the engine. Since we don't have a typical oil filter in our engines and we have a small oil capacity, we were just being extra cautious trying to avoid the potential for any damage. I would say 50 miles is excessively cautious, but I wouldn't think twice about changing it after a couple of hundred miles. The crush washer is a 12.5x20mm.
Part numbers can be found in this thread: www.gromforum.com/forum/honda-grom-how/22250-oil-change-filter-spinner-cleaning-video.html
I should point out just so you know that Honda recommends the first service at 600miles and they suggest changing the oil only. They suggest the first cleaning of the internal filters at 7,500mi. As the parts are cheap enough and the oil volume is so low, I have a hard time imagining the oil staying very clean and therefore, I imagine a high amount of crud in the filter. I intend to change my oil and filters at every oil change for the first couple as a precautionary measure. If I find that the filters are always super clean, then I will follow Honda recommendations.

ok look thanks for showing me whats going on in the engine and how much pressure i need to loosen boltsb but damn you is rough btw 10w-40 doesnt mean 10 weight hahahahah its a winter rating its been some years since you made this video im gong to assume you know this stuff now
what's the other bolt for next to the oil drain bolt...I undone it and quickly realised it was the wrong one! Ive looked in the manual and cant find anything about it
that is the camshaft chain tensioner
thanks
I don't really know why I just watched this whole video, I don't and will never own or service a Grom lol.
Can you tell me the 10 crankcase bolts torque setting as I cannot find this anywhere?
Thanks ;-)
H2 z i think it like 7 pounds
H2 z how about the spec for the drainnplug
i hate the little Honda cam chain tensioner. the ones stick out of the cylinder are way better, easier, and probably cheaper to produce.. i was working on a motor upside down the other day not paying attention i removed that plug instead of the drain plug, it scared the shit out of me with it's spring.
i normally put the bike in gear or a strap wrench on the flywheel when working inside the motor. but an impact is always better.
i reuse crush washer till they leak or crack but i'm cheap....
How do you hold the oil spinner while torquing the bolts for the cover? It just spins around when I try to torque the 3 bolts.
You would need to use a holding tool or another wrench. You can also place the bike in gear and have someone set on it to keep the rear tire from spinning so that the motor will not turn. When doing this service on my personal bike I opt for this method as I always have a friend around who can sit on it for a few seconds to keep it from rotating.
mnovell stick a penny in between the mesh gears this eill hold it from moving
is there a grom parts catalogue
what is the parts number of the side cover gasket...
hobidolap Try this "parts fiche": www.bike-parts-honda.com/ :) Doesn't have all models but the Grom/MSX125 is on there.
engine case torque spec ?
thanks for the video. i will say however your point about this being better than a filter isn't true. the ten bucks you save on the filter you're spending double on gaskets. also, for my triumph i had a reusable filter which was a one time cost. but again thanks for the help.
Could’ve design an external oil filter, in that case it would be a 3min oil change not 30
It would be funny if this drain bolt was the EXACT same that fits my 05 civic si car's xD
Incredebol
I cant reach the bolt on the case behind the spring on the brake.
did you ever figure this out? can't reach mine either.
you need a smaller socket or just take off the rear set.
+Hooligoon 832 smaller socket sounds a lot easier. thanks for the quick reply!
you need a smaller socket or just take off the rear set.
I have 1,000 miles on my grom and have never done an oil change :(
Then it must be done quickly
+Leffa yeah I know I will do it this week for sure
How much of oil ?
Just under 1 quart. Approximately 950ml. The oil level is checked with the dipstick by setting it in the hole but NOT screwing it in.
It's 7500 miles for this service. Why are you doing it so often?
I'm baaaaaad...bad bad bad baaad. I never replace the crush washer.
Do yourself a favour guys, don't clean spinner and filter. It's probably a bad idea if you dont know what your doing. You will end up doing silly damage. the engine will thank you.
Why?
+Marquis Garwood Because some people don't know what they are doing
+Leffa bassically yes.
Which is why helpful people like the bloke on this video explain things so clearly so people who aren't so mechanically minded can do their own work. This is a fairly simple procedure.
You misunderstood. I'm asking why Joeyrule111 said, "Do yourself a favour guys, don't clean spinner and filter. It's probably a bad idea if you dont know what your doing. You will end up doing silly damage. the engine will thank you."
I.E., why shouldn't we do that ourselves...it's not that hard.
Why don't you just put it in gear to stop the crank?
Philip, that works on bigger bikes with heavier weights and engines, but on the Grom if you try and undo those bolts with the bike in gear it will turn the engine by your bolt rotation.
+
Don't use your hand as a hammer.
I liked the grom, until i saw this stupid stuff. BTW good job, Mr. Mechanic.
ratoneJR easy job to do
I just bought a grom. Are you kidding me? What kind of stupid design is this? Why not just remove the head and adjust the values while we are at it? Just saying!!~ Oh ya, might as well through in a fifth gear while we do the oil change!
I bought the z125 instead of the grom because of the oil change procedure. wtf is wrong with honda!

ewelina kryszczyszyn why thank you kind person!
