I read the original book to my son when he was a child (he's in his thirties now!) and we also watched this film back then, too... it was wonderful to watch it again, here. Thank you for making it possible for me to relive those happy memories.
Yes, that's right. It is priceless to me right now, as I am working on a children's piece about a ships cat from a little harbor town myself -- a very different story, but atmosphere and cat/human interactions in common. This is very beautiful animation and story writing!

This stunning, beautifully written/illustrated/told story has been part of my life for around 30 years. Having just watched a video relating the death of a young family man, lost attempting to cross the Tasman sea in a canoe, I was minded of Tom’s words to Mouser. It should be he who should go out fishing, not a young man with a wife and young children. Would that he had heeded such a message.

@@jay-p9r6m I don't know what you mean? The artwork is all lovingly done by hand in the size required for the book. It was then animated by some (what would now be considered very crude and basic) early computer animation. That's not what I would consider 'special effects '?
I remember seeing this in school back in late 2009-early 2010 but forgot about this for many years. I asked on Reddit if anyone knew what the story was called, based on my hazy memories and this one pretty matched it (I could still remember the seafaring town and the parade in the end credits, but not the title).
I haven't seen this in 15+ years and for some reason, I just started to WEEP. The nostalgia was so emotionally strong.
Mowser's singing makes me weep. Lovely evocative seafaring type song.
