Great video. I have the same kayak and tranport with a pickup. I've ordered a winch and have started constructing the ramp. Thanks for the design and idea of launching the kayak.
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful. I don't know what type of winch you ordered but the black control box on the harbor freight ones are not water proof. So I wired in a plug so I could keep the box inside the truck until I want to use it. Hope that helps.
No problem! Glad you like it. Yeah I thought about maybe in the future do another one out of aluminum with some rollers. That's definitely a good ideal.
Great idea. I had that thought, but wasn't exactly sure how to go about mounting it to the bed of the truck. I was/am very hesitant to drill holes in the bed, just because I don't want to start a rust disaster. But, short of what you said, and maybe using some longer wood for the ramp, this looks like it turned out incredibly well. A fully loaded yak is heavy. And, for the guys who won a Hobie, you damn-near need a trailer.
Thanks! Yeah it toke some thinking and some playing around to get it to work but definitely worth it to me. I didn't like drilling the holes in my bed either but had to be done to make it work. I've always hated loading and unloading everything out and in the kayak at the boat ramp. Just takes so much time. This way I can leave most of the heavy things in the kayak all the time. My kayak setup weights around 180ish. And like you said that's light compared to a hobie or bonafide. I'd definitely want this setup if I had one of them.
@@ARKAYAKFISHING Amen...glad you stuck with it. It's given me some ideas. I would think that some rubber gaskets may even solve any potential rust problems from the holes. You're good-to-go as long as no water touches the unfinished metal. I was able to solve the storage problem, when I built a stand for it, that was the same height as my truck bed, so it just slid right on and off at home. But, launching it into the water was a different story. Without a system like your's you really only have one option. I know first hand how hard these videos are to make (few people know what even s simple video involves). So, thank you again for sharing, I think you helped a lot of people.
@@phillamoore157 yeah didn't think about the rubber washer. Could use some clear silicone too. I'll probably go back and do mine like that. Thanks for the ideal. Lol yeah people think youtube videos are easy until they try it for themselves. I really appreciate the support and glad I could help out! 👋 Happy fishing! 🎣
@@ARKAYAKFISHING Actually...the silicone idea is better, and faster. Go with that option. You definitely don't want any rust to start eating away at those holes. 👍
I am very interested in the wench assembly. I have a Hobie PA 12 that weighs around 120lbs with minimal loading of gear. that would be nice. thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! Hopefully this setup can help get you back out on the water. It's made life alot easier getting it in and out of the water for sure. Happy fishing! 🎣
Great video, I have been wanting to do this, but this is the 1st video I have found for the winch mounting that did not involve welding or taking the winch on and off each time you use it.
Thanks! Yeah I tried to keep it simple as I could without doing anything major to the truck bed. I'm still loving this setup. Still using it everytime I go. Only thing is that little black box that controls the winch is not water proof. Found that out the hard way. I zip tied it to the top of my battery and keep it in the truck until I want to use it now.
Thanks! I've been using this setup now for months and love it. I'll never go back to doing it any other way. People at the boat ramp always think it's the coolest thing ever. I did put boat carpet on the center runners. Seems like it helps. PVC might be better for the center. Be real slick for the kayak to go up and down on. I'd definitely make the ramp longer for that kayak. Probably 10 to 12 foot.
so do you just leave it hanging out the back of the truck while you're fishing? I was thinking of something like this as well...was thinking it would also help support the boat while it is in the bed, I have an Unlimited NuCanoe (12'6") and my truck has a 6ft bed...wonder if I can make it shorter and just leave it in the truck.
I shut the tailgate with it up in the air. I put a lock and chain on it so nobody can borrow it. This one's 8ft total. You might beable to go shorter if you don't have a trolling motor on the front. One thing I did have to change is the little black control box that controls the winch. That black box is not water proof. I now zip tie it to the top of my 12v 12ah lithium battery.
Awesome setup! Getting my pickup tomorrow and this is exactly what I'm doing for my fully rigged CM110. Have a question though. Do use a bed extender at all or just the winch to secure it in place while your driving?
Thanks! Glad you like it. When I'm traveling I leave the winch hooked to the back of the kayak and I put the ramp about half way under the kayak. Then I just put one ratchet strap across the bed over the kayak holding it down tight. Never had it move at all doing that. Let me know how it goes once it's set up.
manuals.harborfreight.com/manuals/61000-61999/61840.pdf If you buy the harbor freight winch it's very simple. Just black and red to the battery. I moved the black control box and zip tied it to the top of my battery. When you do that you'll just lengthen the wires some. But the wiring remains the same. Just red to red. Black to black. Very simple and straightforward. Hope that helps. 👋
@@ARKAYAKFISHING thanks for getting back to me. I pretty much have the same winch except mine is the 3500.. Do you have to ground any wires at all? Also, is the remote something you buy separately?
Your welcome. The 2500 comes with the remote when you buy the winch. I'm not sure if you can get a remote for the 3500 one. But no. Just wire the black to the ground on your battery and red to positive.
Well done, sir. I’m curious is it easy to pull the ramp out from under the kayak when traveling? Also, is it difficult to push it under the kayak once it’s loaded? My kayaks about 120 pounds naked.
Thanks! My kayak weights around 120 with battery chair and black pak. I load my kayak on top of the ramp from my kayak cart. But I don't put the ramp completely under the kayak. Only about half way under. When I get to the parking lot first thing I do is pull the ramp out as far as I can before adding the trolling motor and all my other gear. That's pretty easy. Then when I back down the boat ramp to unload it. The ramp mostly is already pulled out so that parts pretty easy. When I load the kayak after I'm done fishing. I'll load it up. Then I only push the ramp under the kayak just enough to keep it from falling out as I'm going back up the ramp to the parking lot. That's also pretty easy. Then after taking all my gear out and trolling motor off then I'll finish pushing the ramp under the kayak. This is alot to remember but if you do it like this it's pretty easy both ways. And once you get it down it's like clock work. I bring a small stool with me to help get in and out of the bed of my truck so I don't have to climb up and down to load some of my gear. You'll love it once you get it all down. I've been using it for close to a year now and love it. The boat carpet on the ramp does help some too. Hope that helps. Happy fishing 🎣
