Excellent video, now let's do it with spot lock!!! But seriously you have made this project much easier than it would have been otherwise. thank you
I really appreciate that! Lol your not the first person to suggest spotlock or pwm setup. That's something I really try to keep in mind on my how to videos. I just try to make it as easy/simple as it can be. Happy fishing! 🎣
@@ARKAYAKFISHINGcheck out Autoboat GPS, is a GPS module that lets you install spotlock on motors like the Endura
@@ARKAYAKFISHING I just finished my complete wireless conversion of a transom-mount minn kota, and now I'm gonna try and add an arduino-based spot lock to it. I'll try and do a follow-up video if it works! Wish me luck!
@@JasonSipe16 Nice build you did. Liked how you put everything in the battery box. Nice clean easy to transport. Good luck on the spotlock. I've been wanting to add a spotlock to my setup too. Be very interesting to see how you do it.
@@ARKAYAKFISHING Thanks! I'll certainly share any info IF I can figure it out! I loved your motor actuator project!
The breakdown of parts and description is awesome, much appreciated!!!
No problem! Glad it was helpful! 👋
Thanks for taking the time to go through this build. You did a great job explaining everything and I appreciate the parts list and going through the tools needed to do the job. Thumbs up my man!
Thanks I really appreciate that! Glad it helped! Happy fishing!
This is a fantastic little trolling motor!! I have it on a 14ft aluminum boat and have no problem getting around !
Thanks! Glad to hear your liking the trolling motor setup. I think your the first person to put it on a boat witch I thinks awesome! Happy fishing!
What a great, quality video. So thorough and well explained. I don't even kayak fish and I watched the whole thing. Good job. Oh, and well engineered also.
Thanks! I really appreciate that! Glad you found it interesting. Happy fishing! 👋
Best control video I have seen! Great explanation and cleanest install I have seen! Thank you.
I really appreciate that! Thanks for the support! Fish on!
Awesome job on the engineering. This setup looks so professional and is as simple as it could be to add power steering to a standard trolling motor. I will be planning on a setup very similar. I saw another video where a guy uses a powerwheels drive motor and gearbox as the steering motor setup and used a wireless remote to control it. Thank you for the much needed inspiration to finish my trolling motor on my kayak.
Thanks! I really appreciate that! I haven't seen the power wheels video yet. I'll have to look that one up. Glad the setup helped out. Thanks for watching. Happy fishing 🎣
Awesome job brotha. Very good explanations and thoroughness on every details that’s necessary.
Thank you Sir!
Thank you so much for the video definitely going to be making this set up for my sundolphin
Your welcome! Glad you found it helpful and thanks for the support! Happy fishing!
Wow what a video, well done. I was tuned in the entire way.
Thanks! I really appreciate that! 👋
You did a Great Job! Now do a second video adding PWM TO THE TROLLING MOTOR. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
Thanks! Really appreciate that! 👋
Excellent video. Thank you. This is now a future project. Very well done my friend
Your welcome and I appreciate the support! Glad you found it helpful. Happy fishing 🎣
Thank you for making this video amazing work 👏
I appreciate that! Glad it helped out. Happy fishing!
This is by far the best motor setup video that I've seen! Awesome job! I will be using this exact setup on my kayak! Thanks for putting this together and sharing it!

Thanks! Not being able to find this vocally was stressing me out as I have almost all of the other parts I need for this build, though I am configuring the box with a PWM. At least that’s the plan anyway.
Great video great explatory
Thank you!
How about a video on how you wired your control box. How you mounted it. And how you mounted trolling motor to kayak.
Sure. I can put a video together going over it. I'll get one put up in the next week or so.
Great video! New sub.
Simply an outstanding share of information and an excellent build. Subbing is the very least I can do.
I appreciate that! And thanks for subbing! Happy fishing!
Started this build this weekend. Merged some other ideas from another DIYer using a pen. I also flipped the quick attach plate 180 degrees to prevent the potential of losing the motor in the water, in case the thumb screw were to fall out, which posed some challenges but think I havdd ed it figured out.. I would send you a pic of the mod so far if I could.
*pwm
Sounds like it's going to be a good build James. Hope it all comes together smooth. That PWM will be a nice addition.
🤩 thank sir!
Welcome! Thanks for watching! 👋
This is the best video I've come across in a long time. I'm going to modify your plans a bit for my Endura Minn Kota - 30, which I use for my personal pontoon.
Question - if that is a 4-position joystick, then couldn't you in theory use the Front/Back axis, rather than a separate Up/Down Switch to activate your power lift and your Left/Right axis would still control the steering, correct?
I really appreciate that! Yeah you can but not with that joystick. That one is just a 2 way only. They do make one that is 4 way. I have my other ascend kayak wired up like that with the 4 way. You'll need 2 of the relays also. Happy fishing!
This is incredible, very patient and thorough. Do you have a source list for the materials? Not the nuts, bolts, wires, but certainly the power drive and switches, relays, etc. Maybe was listed but I missed it. Thanks!
Thanks I really appreciate that! Yeah all the parts are linked in the video description. If you find a bad link let me know and I'll update it. Thanks!
I put my motor in my pod . The best set up for me because I dont always go where I use the motor . But , always use rudder .
When I go somewhere that I wont be using the motor , Its just unplug pwm and pull pod with motor and put other pod in .
Nice! Sounds like a great setup and versatile!
Great job sir! Would that drive housing work on the factory mount on a trolling motor? I would love to have the steering ability with the joystick without the up-and-down cylinder.
Thanks! Really appreciate that! I don't think you could with the factory one that comes on the endura. I don't know what set up you got but you might be about to make something work with the pontoon mount.
genius!
Thank you!
Great video. How do you put in the kayak cleanly?
Sorry I don't understand your question. Are you asking how do I put the kayak in the water cleanly? Or how I put the wires in the kayak cleanly?
Loved the detailed installation. Good job! One question... did I miss seeing the inclusion of the "speed control"? Where in your wiring setup do you put the speed controller?
Thanks! You see the speed controller/factory control switch at 37mins. I'm going to be uploading another video next week going over putting the trolling motor on the kayak and the control box along with the wiring.
@@ARKAYAKFISHING Great! Seeing it mounted, installed and where you put the controls along with wiring, installation, and using it will be a great addition. Thanks for working on this!
@@BigSkyDavid No problem. Hopefully it'll help better understand how it all works.
Love the video lotsa great ideas, was wondering what was the name of that table you were using it looks really handy. Thx again for your time and effort.
Thanks. I really appreciate that! The table is the Worx Pegasus folding table. Been using it for years. Love it. Very helpful and versatile.
Again thx for your time and effort in providing these informative videos
@@cliff6490 no problem. Glad you found the information and videos helpful. Thanks for watching
Question in regards to the up/down toggle switch and the joystick. I noticed you are using a 2 position joystick to run the left/right motion of the trolloing motor and then a 3 position toggle switch for the up/down for the actuator. My question is........couldn't you get the same results with a 4 position joystick (L/R and Up/Down)? It might take a hot minute to figure the wiring with the relay and the L/R fuction, but the Up/Down should be pretty standard. Thoughts??
Yeah your right. You can do it that way and my ascend kayak is setup like that. I went with a separate switch on this kayak because I want to beable to turn and move the trolling motor up and down at the same time. With the joystick you can only use one direction at a time. Doesn't sound like that big of deal until you start using it. Like when im coming into the landing on a windy day or navigating some shallow spots. But yeah you can set it up that way. You'll just need two relays and a 4 way joystick.
This is just perfect i will use your video to do the same thing for my recon 120 ...
Do you know how much does it weight ?
Thanks! Glad the video helped out. The trolling motor setup with a minn kota 45 weights 24lbs
Do you know if its the same setup for all transom mounted minnkotas? Came across a good deal on a riptide transom mount trolling motor and not sure if to get it or not. Great video by the way!!!
Thank you! I've never had my hands on a riptide but I know everything is the same but the control switch in the head of the trolling motor might be different from the endura models. But even if the switch is different you should still be able to make it work. Let me know how it turns out.
After a month or so of seeing your video every day and doing research I finally finished my setup! Thanks alot for the video. I've seen you have an ascend 133x. I think you should review it! I myself and alot of 133x owners would really enjoy and benefit from your ideas. Thanks again!
Great in depth video.
Could you provide a link for the relay and aluminum channel?
You kept calling the yellow triangle tool a level? It's a square, LOL
Great Job

@@ARKAYAKFISHING Thanks for your swift reply. I should have been a bit more patient, after commenting I saw another one of your videos where it listed the relay and a different prop. Great videos, very informative. Wasn't sure if I wanted to put a trolling motor on my kayak I enjoy paddling. You can find older 30 lb used TM's really cheap and will probably start collecting parts for a build? If and when I do look for a shout out to your page. Thanks
www.youtube.com/@outlaw1915
Thanks! I really appreciate the support. I'm the same way. Sometimes I enjoy paddling and just keeping things simple. That's why I came up with making the trolling motor quick release. Sometimes I just want to enjoy a nice paddle trip. So I just leave the motor in the truck. It's just really nice to have that option. What ever you decide to do on your build if you have any questions or need help let me know. Good luck and happy fishing 🎣
question about your motor driven steering. Is it setup like a servo and center it self when not getting a signal
No it's not like a servo. It only moves when you give it power in the direction you want it to move in.
Great video! can anyone tell me what the overall measurement is from the end of the quick release plate to the end actuator (not including trolling motor)? I have a 12-volt battery that will sit in front of it.
Thanks! Really appreciate that. I'm at work today but I can probably get you a measurement on that tomorrow or Tuesday.
It's 21-5/8. You can take an inch off that because I added an inch just for a camera mount lol
This was amazing to watch! Great job on the video! Would these parts work with my Newport 36lb thrust 24" shaft
Thanks! Really appreciate that. Yeah it should work fine as long as it has a 1-1/8 diameter shaft.
@@ARKAYAKFISHING I will have to try it! Just wasn't sure if the motor housing that you used would work with my Newport
It should as long as that shaft diameter is the same. You'll still need the minn kota power drive coupling that I showed in the video. That's the part that actually makes it turn.
@@ARKAYAKFISHING Thank you!I appreciate the help!
No problem! 👋 Good luck and happy fishing! 🎣
Can you do this with a Newport Vessels Kayak Trolling motor? Its 24 inches so no need to cut it.
If the shaft is 1-1/8 like a minn kota then it should work fine.
Hello. I wanna ask if the power drive housing is universal for any trolling motor not just minn kotas?
The only limiting factor is the trolling motor shaft diameter. It has to 1-1/8" shaft.
What size and where did you source your C channel?
Sorry if I overlooked the answer to this question.
I used 2 inch wide by 1-1/4 tall channel. Got it on ebay. I looked on there earlier and couldn't find any. There is some 2 inch wide by 2 inch tall channel that will also work. Just make sure it's the 1/4 inch thickness
Does that half moon collar comes with the power housing or do I order that separately?
Sorry just seen your comment. You have to order it separately.
Having a bit of trouble finding the 2" Aluminum Channel. Any recommendations?
Yeah I looked and could not find any either. I did find 2" tall by 2" wide on ebay. That will also work. It will just be alittle taller. Just make sure it's the 1/4" thick aluminum.
@@ARKAYAKFISHING 2x2 it will be then.
I’m very inspired and impressed by your build! Have a question though about the Steering Motor Drive Housing: How much does it let you turn, I mean, is there something to limit the turning so it doesn’t go 360 degrees and mess up the wiring from the motor? Or do you just control it by yourself so that you just don’t turn it too much?
Thanks! I really appreciate that and glad to hear it inspired you. It can turn 360 degrees but that is limited by the length of the power wires coming out of the trolling motor. I made my wires alittle extra so I would be able to turn it 360 degrees before having to stop. I've never had an issue of not being able to turn enough. Hope that helps. Happy fishing 🎣
@@ARKAYAKFISHING Thanks for the reply, that clarified a lot! I was wondering, that is the power of the steering motor too much that if you just “keep on turning” that it would rip the wires, but if I understand you correctly, you notice that the limit for the turning is up, when the loose wiring just stops it from turning (so it’s not that powerful). I’m thinking about same type of solution for my kayak, but mounting it to the back of it, so I wouldn’t be able to see so easily how much have I turned it and how are the wires acting, so that is why this wondered me😁
@@M11cc4 I've never had this setup on the back before. It would be a challenge to know how much it's steering left to right. But I have accidentally limited it out before and it did not pull the wires out. It just did not have the power to do that. I would have to rig up some type of turning indicator if I put it on the back so I could tell how much it's turning.
@@ARKAYAKFISHING Thanks for the tip! Your front design is great and probably even better solution for fishing, but my setup limits me so I have to get creative! I have a Wilderness Systems Ride 115 and in front setup, it would cut my access to the front hatch (which I need a lot because I make a lot of overnight trips and have my camping gear with me). The other limiting factor is that I move my kayak around in a trailer which is modified so that the kayak sits perfectly when the nose of it is just at the head of the trailer, so I basically don’t have any room in front. But you gave me a lots of ideas (and probably many sleepless nights😂) so thanks again! Needless to say that I’m a subscriber now🙏🏻
@@M11cc4 Thanks for subscribing! Yeah some kayaks and setups just can not have a front trolling motor. I had the same problem on my first pelican kayak with the front hatch. Sometimes the trolling motor just has to go in the back lol. Glad I could help out! Good luck!
would a terrovia drive also work instead of the powerdrive?
I don't have any hands on experience with the terrova steering housing but from the pictures I've looked up it should still work as long as the shaft diameter is the same.
Good parts list, thanks. Have approx total cost and time? Fishon!
Thanks and no problem! If you use a minn kota 30 cost will be around 500. If you get an early morning start and have all parts on hand then you can get it done that day. Happy fishing!
I missed the pats list, where was that?
Awesome video. Very detailed. I'm now a subscriber. I have all the required parts to build this for my kayak with the exception of the Aluminum channel. Can't seem to find the exact dimensions. Was anyone else able to find the correct size channel?
Thanks! Really appreciate the sub! Year it's hard to find that particular size. You can also use the 2inch by 2inch channel. It's more available. Just alittle taller. Happy fishing!

Here's a link to the switch I use. I don't have any experience with the v1 powerdrive. But if your just trying to see if it will work or run then there should be a black and red wire coming out of the shaft. You should be about to hook a 12v battery directly to that black and red to see if it will run.
@@ARKAYAKFISHING thank you. Being dc i thought that would work but its always better to ask if you have a choice
Your welcome. Yeah better to ask then to burn something up for sure.
is there a way to add powerdrive and keep the transom mount?
Your wanting to put a powerdrive on the back? And your wanting to keep the factory rudder on too?
@@ARKAYAKFISHING i have the pelican pwr 100 that has the transom mount so i was just wanting to keep that mounting system
@@espick53 no you won't beable to keep that mount for the powerdrive. You'll have to mount the powerdrive to a flat plate or a quick detach plate. I would remove that factory plastic transom. Buy some starboard or 1/4 flat aluminum. Cut a piece out to match the factory mounting holes. Bolt it down useing 1/4-20 bolts. Then buy a minn kota quick detach plate. Just like the one I bought in the video. Then bolt it to the piece you made to replace the factory transom. Then bolt the powerdrive to it. That way you can quickly take the trolling motor off. Hope that helps.
