- Fabled song by composer Ernesto de Curtis, and lyricist brother Giambattista. It's here presented by amazing Mr. Lauritz Melchior. He's observed by Jane Powell, and accompanied by Xavier Cugat and his orchestra.
Lauritz Melchior was the greatest heldentenor who ever lived. His performances in the operas of Wagner are legendary.
Wagner is not italian
@@teodorinamanca2690 Clearly he's not talking about this piece. Obviously Wagner is not Italian, he's speaking about Melchior's famous performances of Wagner's works, not this work
@@alb.3818 let's leave spaghetti Italians.
And he is not singing Eagner "style" here Bravo, or very slghtly vice versa Domingo singing Wagnet
@@elsalohengrin7777 Melchior sounds great in this.
The great tenor could sing anything....
This was a time when Hollywood and radio would pair operatic voices with pop singers. I think of Pinza and Crooks
appearing on Crosby's show, JC Thomas too. Think of how Pinza or Tibbett could have blown Bing out of the studio, but of
course they held back. Here we have LM in full throated flow, I'd like to see it today
Lauritz Melchior my favorite heldentenor!!! BRAVO!!!!
Thank you John Schofield! Mr. Melchior was a superb performer!
I agree 100% with you; thanks for sharing this wonderful video of maestro melchior. My best regards to you!!!.Muchas gracias.
Siempre vuelvo a Don Melchior, me retribuye agradables sensaciones.
My God, that such a vocal instrument was created by God always puts me in awe of His powers.
The man could sing. My mother loved him. She studied opera as a mezzo...
MAGNIFICO LAURITZ !!!!!!!
I’ve loved listening to him for decades, what a wonderful ringing voice
Hiring Melchior for Torna a Surriento is like using a tank for a stroll in the garden.
torna surriento fits dramatic voices much better, idk what are u talking about. My favourite is Bastianinis rendition.
😂😂😂😂😂
He sang it beautifully.
I have to agree a bit. It was popular around that era to get big names to overdo roles... This was more the Mario Lanza fare. However, the man could sing...
Very nice. Don't think I've heard him before and I listen to nothing but Classicfm on UK radio!
I'll email them and say Play some Laurizt Melchior!
Denmark would have needed such a performer today. Sweden also and the rest of the world to.....
What a wonderful performance!!
I really appreciate it. Congratulations from Brasil 👏👏👌

GRANDE LAURITZ.
Great voice and personality. Not what you call a "prima donna". Enjoyed movie.
+Bob Boscarato Hi Bob,
Thanks so much for your comment! It's a lovely movie, and all of the cast are charming. Thanks again for having written!
Best wishes,

One of the best renditions
Hallo und Moin ! Vielen Dank für die Interpretation Applaus von Hier.
0:53 and onward: his facial expression is so cute when he opens his eyes wide and smirks while singing
@punknn08 ---This is from "Luxury Liner," 1948!
BRAVOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brilliant.
Fantástico!
Guarda il mare com'e bello!
Spira tanto sentimento.
Come il tuo soave accento,
che me desto fa sognar.
Senti come illeve salle,
dai giardini odor d'aranci,
Un perfumo non v'ha eguale
per chi palpita d'amore.
E tu dici io parto addio,
T'allontani dal mio cuore,
questa terra del amore,
hai la forza di lasciar.
Ma non mi fuggir,
non dar mi piu tormento,
torna a Sorrento
non farmi morir
Excellent!!
Un très grand ténor du siècle dernier.

BELLA CANCION
❤❤❤
. Canto e recita grante QUALITÀ freseggi e legati Ottimo Tenore alla NAPOLETANA VOTO OTTIMO
Ottimo tenore purtroppo la pronuncia dell' italiano lascia piuttosto a desiderare
From the movie 'Luxury Liner'.
Indeed! Think it was just on TCM during the last week. I'm a Jane Powell fan, but couldn't let this one by Mr. Melchior go by! Hope you liked it!

Who’s the blonde girl Lauritz is singing to?
BRAVISSIMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a singer he was! Listen also to Jussi Björlings "new" Torna a Surriento viewed by Addiobelpassato here on UA-cam.
He was a wagnerian tenor, a helden (tramatic tenor). Countertenors sound like contraltos, almost! His powerful voice never left him, making him able to sing almost in his coffin! Jane Powell, namely the worst hollywood "soprano" ever, appears with her youngster looks! She was very small and looked so much younger than she really was. It´s was usual in those days to take opera retired artists into glossy hollywood produtcions. Melchior, Ezio Pinza, Licia Albanese, Dorothy Kirsten, Lilly Pons...
In 1948 Jane Powell WAS very young.
Why the quotation marks around "soprano"? She WAS a soprano, whether you like her or not.
My Grandfather Angelo was a fan.
@11777766 Not at all he started as a Baritone, then he worked his high notes and became a Heroic Tenor or Heldentenor.
A rarity: Melchior, Powell, Cugat and "Torna a Surriento". But nice.
He was a heldentenor not counter tenor
In the Wagnerian repitore every bit as great as Caruso was in his heavier Italian repitore .... but everyone knows Enrico.... Each.. a faultless voice
Bel documento !!! Peccato, aver rovinato il TESTO......!
He looks very tall. What was his height?
Hi Yakir Dorani,
Mr. Melchior was 6'2"! Maybe he looked taller because little Jane Powell, still with us, is/was 5"1"! Thank you for writing!
varadero
6 feet 4
he did a famous skit with Lily Pons for a Gala at the Met where she (4'9"?) lifted him overhead (on wires)
@@ciroalb3 how is that possible 😂 was she a titan?!
He was one who didnt like bugs bunny playing the banjo 😋
Ok, so i came across this video and i thought "wow this is beautiful, i need to find the sheet music". I thing this guy is amazing, but it seems like at some parts he's just making up words. Like not even close to the actual lyrics. Did anyone else notice that?
Who cares if makes up the words. Can you sing like that? I aspire to it...and I am a Bass
He's not making up word, this version appears to have been translated from neapolitan to italian: he is actually singing an italian version of "Torna a Surriento", hence the different lyrics.
Brent FYI he was infamous for recomposing Wagner on stage especially the whole THIRD act of Tristan Und Isolde anyway he could. But because He is the greatest Heldentenor ever lived so people usually ignores it, who else could sing like him?
He sounds stunning singing in Italian!! His usual soft palate problem is gone here.
Your comment including something negative is laughable. This man could sing better than you can dream of singing.
The most important lesson to learn from this video is the way he supported the high notes . He put his hand on his abbs to show himself pulling in on the upper abdominal muscles and flexing out the chest and pectoral muscles. He described this as proper breathing. It would be more accurate to call it proper support method.
Ian Kaye
Great stuff. Even though his top was always thin and stretched and sounded highly manufactured.
