If you Live Full Time in Your RV, Van or Camping Trailer, or just want to get out and camp once in a while, Passport America might be a worthwhile club for you to join EVEN if you are usually camp for free or off grid.

The more I look at these clubs, the more I realize they are very good for their intended customer: “RVs”. The thing is, I do not have an RV. My problem with Passport America is the amount of work I needed to do to find a campground with the amenities and rules I want. The only search criteria was by state. In AZ it yielded at least 7 pages of campgrounds. Some did not allow pets of any kind. Some did not give discounts for tents. Some did not give discounts during winter months. I don’t have a problem with the rules; I have a problem with needing to go to each campground and research them one at a time. After researching six and not finding one match, I decided I had better things to do. After looking at PA, I tried Thousand Trails. Great search criteria! However, only one tent campground with laundry and shower within about 600 miles from Quartzite; only 8 on the entire West coast (AZ and going West and going North). So far the clubs are a bad fit for me. However, I am very impressed with the as little as $9/week potential total cost for camping if I had an RV.

I love our Passport America membership. We used it traveling from the West coast to the East coast and back. And this past week we used it for 5 days at one park. I like it so much, I just renewed for several more years. One park we stayed at was only $11.50 for full hookups.

Robin, another "hit it out of the park" video! Just made my "maiden voyage" from middle TN to Parker, AZ to Jamie's "van build" to get my solar up and running. Sold my "sticks and bricks" on a Saturday and left on Sunday. Didn't work out as I had anticipated, but had a great time! 4082 miles in 3 weeks! Had to get back to close on the house. Went from a 2,500+ sq. ft. house with 4 1/2 acres to a 20 1/2 ft. long 1995 Winnebago Rialta! Quite a change! Still trying to get rid of "stuff" but it will happen. Love it so far but will love it even more when I can take my time and not feel rushed about anything! Keep'em comin'!

Passport America is completely different from Escapees or Good Sam. Good Sam is like AAA for RVs - you get roadside assistance plus various discounts. Escapees is a club to assist fulltime RVers to keep living this lifestyle. They stay on top of governmental issues, offer seminars and other events, have mail forwarding, promote a tight community, offer some discounts and much more. Passport America is a paid program that provides discounts and a trip routing tool. All of these can be useful. But you really can't lump them into the same group.

I also joined Passport. Although, I have not had the chance to use it yet. My 'nomad life' got interrupted and I am grounded, having to stick near "medical" people and RV shop for a while. I thought it would be totally worth it, if nothing else to catch up on laundry and cooking every couple of weeks.

Your PA experience has been better than mine. Too many policy inconsistencies between RV parks: no more than 2 nights, no weekends during the summer, no holidays, no peak seasons, etc, etc. Enough restrictions to make it a very frustrating experience. Clearly the the parks who partnered with PA are more interested in the exposure they get than actually honoring the discount. In addition (again at least in my experience), it seems a majority of the parks in the PA network are, shall we say, a little sub-par. For an overnighter here and there it's fine but I tend to stay in places for a couple weeks at a time so it just doesn't work for me. I let my membership expire after the first year and decided to drop the big bucks on a Thousand Trails membership. I'm staying in TT parks about 75% of the time and it's MORE than paid for itself, even with the high cost of entry. Once you re-coupe the initial investment it works out to be about $46/mo for unlimited camping, with the rule that you have to move every 14-28 days (depending on your membership type).

    • @mikemead2315
      @mikemead2315 5 років тому

Buying the Thousand Trails 1year membership at a final cost of less than $50/month is very appealing, even if I come out of the woods to “un-bond with nature” only a few times a month - a couple nights of a cheap hotel or campground with hot? showers would cost that. However, TT says they are geared to RVing in style in MotorHomes (lots of Class A pics) and Travel Trailers - tent camping is very limited with only one campground in all of AZ. I need to ask TT, as with all the clubs, about how they deal with vans and converted cargo trailers, along with their definition of an RV. I cant find any rules, which I find hard to believe.

@@mikemead2315 TT made me send pics of my class A before allowing me to sign up. Then they could not commit to me that all their parks would allow me to enter. My experience with them was "iffy" at best. Im not saying they are not a "good fit" for others, maybe they are. My biggest issue with them was a rule change they made during the first 3 months of my membership they made it next to impossible for me to utilize their parks. Rule changes at renewal time, fine.......but mid stream........sucks

Thank you for introducing camping clubs, which is something I have not really considered looking into more than casually until now, as I considered them an excellant future choice when I grow up. Even the more expensive ones are monthly cost effective compared to occasional motels and campgrounds used to “un-bond with nature”. However, so far they seem to be geared far more to MotorHomes than tents, converted cargo vans and converted cargo trailers (when I grow up, I’ll get a standard retail camper/motorhome to better fit in, and then these clubs might be a kick). Websites rules are unclear so far. Tent camping is limited with even the expensive $500+ per year free-camping Thousand Trails club having only one campground that has tent sites in all AZ. I am glad you have researched this area, as you information always surprises me and leads to new research paths. I look forward to your club reviews.

Hello Robin. Good info. Passport America is not one of the many clubs I'm a member of yet. Don't know why, I guess I'll get it and add it to my list. Still debating on whether to get Thousand Trails or not, that one cost lots of bucks. Until I get out west I can't get solar, nobody on the East Coast installs it, so I can't boondock for very long and my RV is almost 32 years old. Can't afford a new one so the RV parks are the way to go for me. Keep up the great work on spreading information to those who need it. Be safe, have fun and bye for now.

Daniel, you could hook up your own solar by simply purchasing the Harbor Freight Solar kit. It is very simple. Everything just plugs into a little box called a "charge controller". Then you just connect the red and black wires to the battery terminals. Red connects to PLUS. Black connects to NEGATIVE. I think it costs about $150 bucks. It is 4 panels of 25 watts each. So it is a good beginners system and gives you a little bit of electricity and helps teach you the basics. Here is a link to one of the youtube videos.... ua-cam.com/video/Bo8jT5fIWW4/v-deo.html Why pay someone hundreds of bucks to hook it up?

My issue is that I am traveling in a 1995 Class B (Pleasure-Way). It's in nice condition and doesn't look run down, but a lot of parks won't take an older than 10 year RV and/or "camper vans" a/k/a Class B's. For this reason, I have hesitated to join any of these membership clubs as the parks that accept the membership vary as to what they will take. As others have mentioned, most are geared towards newer big Class A's/Diesel Pushers. (edited for grammar error)

@@rosettaann1907 say rosetta ann, i am only 63 and still working full time in my own shop and have not traveled in over 40 years, yes, terrible, so i was wondering, being a home body and loving that, if i was to travel in a camper van for say, a week, and just go in a big circle encompassing several states around illinois, and so lets say i am traveling 200 to 250 miles a day, as that is all i could ever stand to be driving my entire life, like, where could i park my van for one night just to get some sleep as i make my way towards a state park where i could get a camp spot with a fire pit, you know what i mean? like if i want to drive south to missouri and take two days driving south to a motel in missouri, where can do you park a van for free, other than a walmart, which i heard is shutting down their lots almost everywhere and learned that from watching these nomad channels, thanks!

Super good to know!!! For me, I can see myself using it, when traveling a long distance, from point A to point B. I like to meet others, especially those who are seasonal campers in campgrounds bc some will share the ins and outs of the local area. Who doesn't want to know the best places to swim, fish, hike, eat and visit, etc?

I have looked into Thousand Trails for when I retire and become a full timer. Being a military retiree and checking out the campground rates on base, plus wanting to boondock and get out of the rat race, I'd have to be nuts to consider any of the RV clubs. I would mainly need AC in warmer climates like Florida, but plan on having enough solar and a generator to be self sufficient if it's cooler out.

Is there any clubs that give a GOOD discount on KOA ? We are in VA. and they are everywhere .WAY to much for us . We use national parks a lot with our senior card . When it is HOT we like hook ups for the A/C . Love your video's...keep up the good work . Does this make us old groupies...LOL

Yes, newcomer here, as I was just watching a 'Carolyn's RV Life' video, and yours popped up right after! We bought a motorhome about 8 months ago, and pretty well right away got a Passport America membership....but, we're Canadians, so haven't used it yet, but will continue our membership as it's like you mention where it pays for itself over time. I believe they have an add-on for RV towing as well, albeit I'm unsure if it's the best way to go or not...perhaps that's something you could look at as well! Since it's nearing midnight right now, I'll have to watch some of your other video's another time, but keep them coming as I've subscribed and clicked the bell for future updates! Thanks for sharing!

I did post you on one of Bob Well's videos saying you explain it the best, hopefully some people looked you up!!

I bought a membership a few months ago, took a 4000 mile trip. (Nevada, Idaho,Montana and Utah) the locations and restrictions were very disappointing. One of the locations, the owner spent 20 minutes telling me that he puts the PA members in the worst part of the campground ! The huge class A owners, would hook up and leave their AC running 24/7, he said it wasn't worth being a member. I would MUCH rather boondock , depending on whats available of course.

The definition will vary a little between folks. One definition (and mine) is that boondocking is camping without any hookups or facilities in an undeveloped area. Examples are doing dispersed camping on BLM land or the backwoods of the forest and are generally free. Some say it is camping without any hookups but can be in developed camp grounds that provide tables, a graded park spot and fire ring. There may be a charge. Examples are primitive or basic forest service camp grounds along with dispersed camping mentioned in the first definition.

c Shep, Thanks! Great info. What kind of a rig were you camping in?
I boondock most of the time, but I am looking at campgrounds for a few times a month and for cross country traveling, so your review fit right in. My fear is “camping” my tiny rig between two class A’s. Thanks.

That was pretty much my experience too. I like the concept but since every affiliate RV park is their own independently run business they ultimately get to decide how/when/if they're going to honor your membership benefit. Not worth the hassle. Needless to say I won't be renewing.

That's pretty sleazy. You should call them out on that and name names! What campground was this, so we know who to avoid?

It's not good for weekend campers. Look at your hoped for camping area in their online catalog. Got to Campground and scroll down to the section with the rules. SURPRISE: Most say
PA is valid for one night, Sun - Thurs only. Or only Sun - Thursday. And what's this only one night counts as PA during the SUN - THURS stay. Found one that said PA rate is campsite only and each person is $3/person. So weekend campers you're screwed. Found one campground that in addition to the before mentioned restrictions, wasn't even available July - October.

I was wondering if you would consider doing a video about how to choose BLM land. I noticed many allow hunting so I'm curious if there are designated areas so campers and Rvers are safe to hike or park. Also would like to know how it is to travel with a cat. Do you ever let him out? And I am glad you will do a video about clubs - I want to join a few when I start out in a year or two because I like to meet new people and hear their stories. Thanks for all the great info up to now and hope you don't mind my many suggestions.
