Look up a North American Arms .22 firearm, it’s the smallest simplest firearm that you can buy, literally about the size of a set of car keys. You can hide it in the palm of your hand, accuracy sucks beyond the distance you could throw something so close range only. Don’t like guns, mace or bear spray works. And WHY did you open your door? Open a window to speak to a stranger. And never ever be afraid of nicely saying with a smile, “You are making me uncomfortable, please leave.” If they persist, “I asked you to leave, and you haven’t. I’m armed (or capable of defending myself) and I’d like to remind you that medical care is over an hour away and you’ll probably be gone before paramedics can reach you.” Optional, “Thank you and have a good day. 😊”

I am 100% on your side, and I hope that you aren't still beating yourself up over this. I know that you have to be careful and keep yourself safe and all that, but you should have an expectation of being left alone! You shouldn't NEED to put out 2 chairs and lock yourself up in your airstream like a prisoner. It's your RIGHT to be safe and free! I think you handled it the way you should have, and I'm glad to hear that you have a means of defending yourself.

And I nonchalantly took a "friendly" picture of them and told the dude he looked like a friend of mine and that I sent his picture to me friend! They left abruptly... almost didn't even say another word. I felt like they were wanting to steal my rig.

If dude had phone service, he should have called the campground and if he was a true camper, he would have known better than to get in your space like that. Also, women need to stop feeling like they have to smile and be nice to everyone. It is not our job in life to present a "pleasing" presence, and if someone calls you a name because you don't comply, just know your instincts were dead on- and you're still alive.

I never go walking around the truck stop from the far end of the parking lot after dark. I carry a laser in my pocket when I am having to go on the truck stop, walk , while watching your surroundings and walk with confidence, and I was told by a teacher of a self defense class, if someone is approaching you, act crazy, start talking to someone beside you that's not there. You can also act like you are on the phone giving out your location so someone can come meet you, like they are on their way then. My sister is a full time, single RVer, and she gets “hit on” all the time at RV parks. I suggested she take a pair of my hubby’s size 12 old sneakers, to put outside the door when she camps and that did the trick. The other RVers are still friendly but it does serve as creeper repellant! If you don’t have any male family or friends with big feet, then go to a thrift store and buy the biggest, oldest sports shoes they have.

I had something similar happen to me when I was young and home alone with 2 kids. A man came to my door and insisted he needed to use my phone. I wouldn't let him in my house and offered to let him use my cordless phone. This was almost 40 years ago. No cell phones. He refused. He was trying to get into my house. No car. He walked to my house and we lived in a rural area. Finally I shut the door and locked it on him. When I looked out the window he had gone over and layed down in my front yard like he was going to sleep. I ended up calling my uncle who lived about 4 miles from me and he came and chased him off. These types of things don't only happed to RVers. My husband was not home at the time. You always have to trust your instincts.

Recently I had to raise my arms in the stop command when I creeper kept edging towards me while talking at me. He kept insisting I accept his free book to me that I told him I did not want. My other hand was on my pepper spray which is always displayed when out and about. I am small 5' 71yr old solo female traveler. When I raised my STOP hand and used my dog command voice of NO and displayed my pepper spray the big guy finally stopped in his tracks and backed away. I was alone in the campground at the time. Yes, anyone can be attacked anywhere anytime, but most attackers typically prefer easy targets. The best protection I ever had was a cold attitude toward overly friendly men and a large dog with a hard stare. Her leash has an instant-release trigger on the handle that separated it from her collar with the press of a lever, something I was quick to mention in "casual" conversation.
My good girl was a trained security dog who knew she was "on duty" when Mama gave her the command. I'm convinced she saved my life several times and I'd give literally anything to have her back beside me, dropping a slobbery tennis ball in my lap and going crazy at the sight of a Dairy Queen (we did love our ice cream).

I completely understand. I wasn't thinking. Years ago, in college, I was living in a little house on a highway. My boyfriend was trying to sell a woody station wagon that was parked out front. He really needed the money, and that distracted my thinking about safety. A pudgy, creeper in green Dockers came to the door to ask about the vehicle. I was dressed in white cutoffs and an adorable halter top. I did NOT let him in. Like an idiot, I told him my boyfriend was away, but if he waited a moment I would get pencil and paper to write down his number. When I turned around to head back to the front door, he was standing in the kitchen just behind me. His eyes were bulged out, and he meant me harm. I got out of that with some quick thinking, but he came back, and was beating on my front door yelling, "I KNOW YOU ARE IN THERE!!" I ran out the back door through briars and fences barefooted, and straight into a stranger's front door about a half mile down the road. I was terrified he knew I was running away because of dogs barking at me. The next day, I moved back home with my parents. Lucky to be alive.

He taught me to hunt deer and elk, which meant the Hard work too, after that bullet left the rifle. The field dressing,, handing and skinning, and butchering.

We (my parents and siblings) live in a Remote area of Idaho, and that the town. When you get into the mountains, it's even more remote. It's not like we ever parked in a KOA campground. And in the real wilderness...you can hear a vehicle from a distance.
But sometimes vehicles break down, and someone might be hiking out, see a campsite and knock on a camper door for HELP..and not for $#$%# sugar.
But too, there was always that slim chance that someone knocking might be up to no good. Better to be Prepared, than dead.
My dad kept his handgun holstered and on him during the day and at night, he kept it within reach. So in the later part of an afternoon, IF anyone should knock, there might be a good chance he already took his holster off, so he would have to hold his handgun when he opened the other door.
Often though, if we did get a visitor, it was usually someone who's truck we recognized...and they just stopped to say hi, before taking their load of firewood down to town.
Humans are not the only thing to be careful of...a bear can rip the door off a camper. Not too long a go, this happened to a guy camping. The bear killed him. On UA-cam there is a video about this, showing the damage that bear did. So, another good reason to have 2 doors and a firearm.

I soaped myself up and wrapped the wash cloth around my hand as I planned an escape route. After a while, when I felt it was safe, I peeked out of the shower curtain to close and lock the bathroom door. I used the other door to get into my bedroom and dress for work. I stayed very quiet. Suddenly there was a LOUD banging on my bedroom door. I opened the door to find my husband with an axe over his shoulder and ready to swing. He asked me if I was OK, which I was. Then told me someone had broken the from door handle off and left the door open. We called the police and they were unable to locate the person. I left for work late, but learned there are moments like this. It can happen to anyone, anywhere. Always have a plan. You did great!

When he didn't go after I told him no, I let the door open a little more to let my big male rotty stick his head through since he was glued to my side the whole time anyway. As he popped his head out and an leveled an intense rotty stare at the guy I said with more sterness, I asked you to leave, and my dog is not pleased, am I going to have to release him? Well, I live in a semi-bad neighborhood that has a large fenced-in backyard for my large dog. I have a junky wooden screen door from my kitchen to this backyard and needed some type of lock, so I could get airflow as well. So, I found a lock that is called a "Safety Gate Hook" and there is a lever that tucks in on the hook with a hole so you place a lock through it. So, no one can bust through the screen and release that hook, it's slightly heavy and well-built. I keep the key on the wall near the door. Then I can leave that room feeling safe. It's sold at Home Depot and Walmart!

Creativity RV, About your screen door, find a metal fab shop that has a laser table, to cut out a stainless steel (304) perforated sheet to fit your door frame, which can be pop riveted or rivnuts with screws in place. The perforated sheet is available in different hole sizes and staggered holes or not. I would use 18 gauge or lighter 19 gauge. This over your bug screen, and two sliding bolts 12”” from top and bottom to secure the door. If you current door frame is flimsy a new one could be fabricated out of stainless steel square tubing. You can buy perforated sheet from McNichols or McMasters or Online Metals.. I would use a single sheet to cover the door frame.

No reason to bother a woman that much. Any guy who isn’t a creep (or just not smart$ knows this. I had two guys buzz on my door. I called down from the 3rd floor window to ask “Can I help you?” There was a rash of home burglaries in the area, including the 1st unit in our building a few months prior. I think they were just buzzing apartment doors hoping someone would just buzz them in, since there’s no intercom or cam on the building. But I came to the window. They made up a story about how a friend of theirs lived there. I told them everyone in the building had lived there for over ten years, and I knew them all, and that I was there all day every day and knew who was coming and who was going, and there was nobody by that name there. That told them all they needed to know, and they left. I went to a hardware store and got a sign that said “This building under surveillance at all times.” And put it inside the front gate right by the buzzer panel with double sided tape.

I'm 68 years young and I'm telling you he was no camping dude! He might be a UA-cam stalker or who knows! Always, always always trust your instincts sweetie and buy a fake doorbell camera with a flashing light from Dollar Tree or Dollar General (not sure which store sells these). Why knows how long he had been watching you thru that door. You had covering angels watching you and I pray they continue to watch over you.

Hello first time here! I'm a scaredy-cat at heart😱 😨 🙀 so hearing this story caused some consternation.
I think you have street smarts and responded appropriately. The would be prowler must have perceived it and moved on. It isn't good to live and fear but plz be prepared.

One of my first attempts to camp overnight was on BLM land near Saddle Mountain (AZ). One of the Rangers came by to chat. Told me that if he were me (single woman) that he would move on from where I was camped. There were “permanent residents” there. I didn’t question the Ranger, I moved on.

I was solo in a house truck. Has a car full of men roll up on me at 2am. Rocking my truck and hitting the sides. Scared the hell out of me! I woke up and yelled "🤬 off!!!" My chihuahua and Maltese both woke up barking. The men took off. But they had their lights off so I didn't get a number plate or a look at any of them. Oh scared me big time

People and especially women - I think this goes without saying - NEVER EVER open your door at night to anyone - even a police officer. I'll hand off something by smaller window - but not a regular window. Don't allow them access in and if I can avoid it I won't let them see me so if they don't already know - I'm a lone woman in this RV.

I am an older, married woman, but still travel alone at times. But I learned as a young mother who had to travel more than 1,000 miles each way with two young children to trust my gut and my Guardian Angels! I am so proud of you, Robin!

Situational awareness is the biggest KEY to safety, and you were absolutely right to trust your gut and be less than friendly. Installing cameras and motion sensors sounds like a very good idea. You are also right to not let this incident scare you off the road, but rather view it as a lesson to improve your security. Stay safe, vigilant and keep on keeping on! For many of us truly enjoy your videos and adventures.

Way to go Robin. The door was locked, you followed your initial gut instinct, put your hand near your weapon and applied situational awareness. I loved that you looked over toward the tent campers to determine whether you had any backup. Sending you good karma girl!
