I know it takes hours of work to produce videos like this, and thank you for all the info, it really helps.
This should be common sense but sadly is not: Park ‘normal’, don’t put your slides out and don’t have a generator running. It just irks me when I see these irresponsible fools parking sideways across 6 spots and slides extended. And no...you are not exempt from this because you own a Prevot, Monoco or any other stratosphere coach. You actually make it as bad for the responsible folks as the really low end beater campers do. Truth.

When traveling and having to stop because of really bad weather, or it is so dark at night, etc., I try to find an official rest area of the highway\interstate and look for other campers parked out of the main parking area and let an attendant know that I need to stay overnight. Usually no problem, as there are others overnighting there also.
I have pre-arranged campgrounds or family homes to park in their driveway. I am quiet, courteous and make as little noise as possible if I am coming in later than planned, I have called in ahead to let them know I am running late. The porch light is ON and someone is usually waiting for me.
I have driven tractor-trailers; on the road 6 -9 days at a time. A few years later, I was living in a 28ft Class A. I used a method I learned as a truck driver: drive at night, sleep in the day-time. The restrictions on parking at business lots is "NO Overnight Parking". No-one ever bothered me for parking at a shopping center lot all day. On summer days, I might have to run the generator and A/C. There were times when I could find a shady spot at a boat-launch site; then just running the exhaust fans kept the interior cool enough to sleep. Rarely did I drive more than 2 nights between camp-sites so drive at night / sleep in the day worked out very well.
Hospitals are another good place to park RVs -- complete with rest rooms and coffee shop. Many people park in motel parking lots without a problem. Sometimes I park at a gas station or quick stop market -- usually going inside to buy something and mention that I need to "rest my eyes" before moving on.

Not a bad idea but you really need to scope out the lots first. Most of the hospitals in my area have EXTREMELY limited parking available, much of it either metered or accessible only through a manned gate. One trick I've been told about is to find large 24-hour supermarkets because their lots have lots of coming & going all night long. (Convenience stores, at least around here, often either attract a different crowd, are the meeting points for police on the beat, and/or can be in some pretty isolated locations.)

@@nairbvel What area are you in? I live in central Illinois and our hospital doesn't charge for parking and most likely wouldn't kick you out. I'm looking at a Carado axion because I need to be stealth in Los Angeles do you know anything about their laws? I heard they have a problem with people living in their cars.
@@evamaria644 Hi, Marie -- I'm on the east coast, in the Maryland 'burbs of DC. I don't know anything about the laws in LA so I'm afraid I can't help you with that question. Not all the hospitals here charge for parking, but a couple of the larger ones have *very* restricted space and use that as a method of traffic control (plus I'd hate to take away spots from people actually dealing with the hospital and/or patients inside). Several have built parking garages over the past decade, each seeming with its own rules & way of doing things. There are a couple of local hospitals (or hospital campuses) with enough parking to be useful for this type of "camping" but one really has to be careful... plus there's always the issue of every jurisdiction and/or facility having its own rules & regulations. I'd say it's an issue of common sense (there's that old oxymoron again, LOL) and researching local laws. Best of luck to you in your travels!

i live in boulder and used to work at celestial seasonings i worked there for four years and there is always people camping by those apartments and i know the trail you were parked at at the start of the video to i go on hikes there. cool. plus theres a little pond/lake with trails right down the street i have camped at. You should go up to nederland theres tons of free camping up there.

Awesome! I've been doing this for years in my Jeep. I never could understand why my family and friends would get so offended I camp in my Jeep. What I did was take the back seat out and I had many towels and many comforters and pillows. I usually would go out to the river or lake or a dry river. Preferably a location that would hide my vehicle. But if I if I had to sleep in town parking in neighborhood attraction houses or something people get weird if someone parks in front of their house. So I tried to find a spot that has other vehicles parked and not directly in front of a house. I have been approached by someone several occasions asking me what I was doing and I would always just say I was with the neighbor and they would leave me alone after that.people don't get to know their neighbors anymore so they don't even check on it. About to take the towels Steven apps around the back side of my roll bar and it was hold it there and cover the windows all the way down and I had a little electric lantern. No one can see the light from outside. I was waiting for and had the great time I did this for years and I will do it again. It was like I was a genie in a bottle. I'm glad to see another woman doing this. I feel more confident I won't be labeled a weirdo anymore. IDK, maybe they still will, just because. Lol the sad thing about it is I learn to do it going thru a divorce from a long-term marriage. Now I know I can survive, nor so I need a bunch of things to go camping and enjoy life out of the city.👍
We have an older travel trailer called a HiLo which extends vertically hydraulically about 30 inches. To stealth camp overnight at times you can simply crawl into bed without raising it and most folks just assume that it is parked unattended and not being used at the moment. If we wish it can be raised in the morning for a bit before lowering it again when we hit the road.
Yeah, people that stay in the same spot for long periods of time ruin that spot for others. Not only are they hogging the spot but locals that notice stop thinking of the spot as a place for travelers. Instead, those locals start thinking of it as a homeless camp. So, they ask the cops to patrol there more, etc.
NIMBY. There's a reason there are more and more van/camper/homeless people - because the U.S. is increasingly becoming untenuous for low wage workers and the working class in general. More and more people cannot afford rent. That's not my opinion, it's reality. Every study done on wages earned v. cost of housing indicates that an average salaried person in amerikkka would have to work 1 1/2 to 2 full time jobs to afford a one-bed apartment. In L.A. alone there are 55,000 homeless people and they are passing laws making it illegal to park overnight in an RV. A guy in Seattle who lived in his truck and had his truck impounded for sleeping in it took his case to court and won. The judge ruled that the pigs cannot confiscate a vehicle if the person uses it as a "home." In Modesto, California, the city has installed permanent homeless tents. That's a start and at least they are addressing it in a compassionate manner, but it's not enough. We need full and free housing. This is the richest fucking country in the world, but the wealthy are sitting on trillions while the rest of us scrape by and can't even afford basic housing and health care. You do know there are countries in the world without homelessness, right? That it doesn't exist in countries far less rich than this shithole. Cities are beginning to address rent controlled housing. In Portland, they are looking at a law to make it illegal for a building owner to keep units vacant. Other cities are making laws restricting Airbnb, which is taking permanent housing off the market and jacking up rents. In Berlin, Germany, they are going to pass a law nationalizing 200,000 rental units. You know what that means, right? They're simply going to expropriate the property from the owners. That's right, they're going to take it from them. And they should. Berlin has a sky high housing market. Something has to change in amerikkka. We either need to start fighting for free and full housing for every person, or you are going to see a lot worse than pigs patrolling homeless camps. People will start burning shit down sooner or later. It's called class struggle and that is the masses finding their consciousness and saying "we're not taking this shit anymore." France has been on fire for 12 fucking weeks with no end in sight. I'm hopeful those Yellow Vest protesters can get into the Parliament Building in Paris somehow - then it's game over and socialism will win. We need a revolution in this country, a new project that puts people before profits.

Don’t people realize that most of us are one accident or medical issue or weather related event or lost job away from financial ruin? and then they are in the same boat? I can park my 2002 Honda Oddesey anywhere in residential areas...anywhere... I look for parks, apts, business parks for stealth camping. I have double tinted windows...so no curtains needed. I have a bed, potty..and all that I need to travel, save money, enjoy life!
Ive considered minivans but feel changing in them would be annoying.

I have a station wagon. Non commercial/non camper vehicles can almost park anywhere. That said I avoid parking in front of private residences, some people can get so angry they will key your vehicle because you took "their spot".
I am considering buying a permit from a resident, I found one for 70$ for beachside parking (per year). That's a million dollar view on a Mc Donalds budget!

Same here. Stealth camping is out using a hammock or just a sleeping bag hiding from people. Not in a RV.
In my opinion, a RV cannot really be stealthy. I mean: if I see a RV parked on the street at night, it is a dead give away that there is a person sleeping inside. But if it is a car or SUV, then there is no hint that somebody is sleeping inside because most cars/SUV parked at night are empty.
That being said the other tricks that were mentioned in that video are good.
Right! I don't mean to be rude but the premise of this video is pretty asinine. An RV cannot be stealth, it's a freaking RV, people aren't stupid they know what's up. A cargo van on the other hand can be totally stealth.
She basically has a van, just a bit wider.
People that own RVs have to park them somewhere when they aren't camping in them. That's why apartment complexes are good to park near -- people live there, and an RV parked in that area might belong to a resident.

True stealth camping is being able to park overnight under the noses of homeowners, corporate security patrols, and the local cops.

You have to be able to blend into the surroundings without attracting attention.
To my way of thinking, a minivan is the perfect stealth camper. Minivans are pretty much invisible anyway. Nobody gives 'em a second glance.
@@LeonAllanDavis Yes, but living in a minivan is pretty much just living in your car. A converted high top commercial van or box truck is the perfect stealth camper, as you can actually make it into a home and nobody will expect anyone to be sleeping in it.
Thanks for the video. Did something similar when I used to commute out of town in my jeep. Hospital parking lots. I shut it down like you do and covered things with a flat black blanket. I had dark tented back windows. It worked. Couldn't afford a hotel every week. Thanks for the great ideas. Stay safe. :)
Another great video, Robin! Stealth camping is definitely an art of simply gathering info on the potential spots and then using commonsense when you finally camp at a location for the night. Thanks for sharing.

Our car has windows all around so it’s difficult to be stealthy unless we park in a really dark area which is hard to find with street lights and building lights etc. we usually aim for a place with a wall of hedges or trees so at least there is no sidewalk on passenger side. Wife and kids lay down in back and I curl up into the front two seats on top of the gear shift and center console. Then I hang a blanket from the handles and one across the back of front seats to block some light from shining on us. If I use my phone I tuck my whole head under a thick blanket but usually try to avoid that all together. It’s not great but until we can get van or bus etc it’s all we have. We used to have a great spot where the trees blocked the light but now our broken car cannot get up the hill to get there.
Can you get a sun shade or two from a thrift store in your travels ?

Great video! I would also try to park with a car right behind me because my bed is across the back of my van. When my bed was along the side I would always park with it next to the curb or tree, something between me and the road.

Another stealthy place to park is at car dealerships. My converted cube van is a chevy. Have parked dozens of times in the area where vehicles that are going to be worked on are parked at different chevy dealers nation wide. Three rules....Stealth (no light that can be seen outside and quiet). Arrive at least an hour after dealership closes. And leave at least an hour before they open. Hours are usually posted somewhere on the building windows.

Likely to take some flack on this considering the channel and all but here goes:
As a small business / commercial real estate owner I would like to share a consideration; this is PRIVATE land that is open to the public for the use of the business that is represented (even if the property is vacant/non-leased). There are costs to OWNERSHIP (which is why y'all are boon docking). Lot maintenance, waste disposal, insurance, and of course the mortgage itself. That some of us 'allow' silent, clean, respectable persons to 'overnight' should not imply that any of us SHOULD allow it so be respectful (don't litter, or let your pets urinate on the shrubbery/lawn, and vacate before the business opens as stalls are for customers) and be grateful, leave a "thank you note" or buy something, or even a couple bucks as a way to "give back", and as the saying goes "DONT F IT UP!" or this way of living will disappear as fast as it is rising now.
Oh good the capitalist bootlicker has joined the conversation. Business owners don't actually work, all you do is exploit your workers for profits. You extract their surplus value, you don't earn shit since they do all the work.
Which is why many love Wal-Mart.
Safe, security patroled; the majority of overnighters allowed onsite are respectful, clean, quiet. Most leave the lot by 6:30 AM - after using the facilities and then strolling the store for the day's essentials - breakfast, lunch, dinner & replenishing other essentials.
Some newbie A.Holes would leave their trash - myself & others would walk the overnight lot and pick what they left behind. If those same people stayed more than once - we gave them a nice talking to adapt, or go elsewhere. We weren't going to have our safe place taken away due to some pigs.
Also - the gas station next to Wal-Mart always got our business, too. We use their bathroom - we appreciated the non-hassel & spent our gas money there.
BTW - some Wal-Mart locations will ban you - individually - from their lot if you are a repeat offender. That's it - you are outta there - no coming back - cops will escort you off the property if you are banned.
@@mybackyardparrots9198 I agree that people should be very respectful and clean up after themselves. Boggles my mind the entitlement some people have that they feel they can just dump their crap in the parking lot and think that's fine.
A note: Many (most, all?) Wal-Marts in the US, are open 24/7, and many (most?) allow overnight parking from what I've gathered in watching so many of these "vanlife" videos. However, in Canada, I don't believe there are any 24 hour Wal-Marts (could be wrong, but in the Toronto area there are none, I would presume if there are, it would be big cities only), and I'm pretty sure NONE of them allow overnight parking. You guys south of the border have an amazing resource down there. We have to get a little more creative up here. ;o) Bottm line, be respectful of where you are, and don't be a dick.

Your video's are the best of all the rv life video's I have seen.
Several years ago, I was in a situation where I had to sleep in my car for a few months. I found that motel parking lots, usually the budget ones like Super 8 and Motel 6, were good places to stay overnight without being bothered. I am speaking of the ones in area's that are generally safe as there are some of these hotels in run down/bad area's that wouldn't be, but the ones right off the highway where there are lot's of restaurants/fast food joints/gas stations were always good for me.
I also had good luck parking and sleeping overnight in hospital parking lots...usually the back rows of parking near the emergency room entrance. I used both of these locations for months with no problems.
Never ever use ear plugs when camping because you need your ears for danger signs and to stay alert. You would never be able to hear someone walking around your vehicle.
if i was worried about minor noise outside, in a city, id never sleep. i can still hear w the plugs, just takes the minor stuff out

I stayed in the downtown St. Louis RV park a year ago, and I was woken up by gunshots in the distance one night.
I agree with Vienna on this, don't use ear plugs either.
Part of knowing where to stealth camp is picking an area that is safe. Quiet residential areas are safe. Big cities in front of clubs and bars and car dealerships are sketch, but hey, that's why you drive out to the outskirts. The less people around the better. Stop living in fear.

Not sure how you would go about finding out but some Airstream owners let other Airstream owners park at their home. It’s an Airstream thingwas 😊 Maybe there is something similar for other folks. And I recall a family that was featured on 20/20 or 60 minutes (not sure which one) they would drive around and if they found a home with a big enough lot they would knock on door and ask if they could stay a night or two and in return they would cut the lawn or wash their cars. And they made sure they didn’t look homeless when they approached the home 😊

A tip for anyone using earplugs regularly -- if your ears start to get itchy or sore, swab them gently with a Q-Tip dipped in Tea Tree Oil. Use the normal precautions so you don't damage the sensitive eardrum.
How about 24 hr fitness parking lot or any business that is 24 hr and Hospital er might work.
I was thinking of joining the gym that's 24 hours and parking there. If they get to tripping about parking their, they would lose my business..lol
@@toochiesmith Location, parking lot and your vehicle and vehicle plate are all factors. Many are situated in plazas with shared parking. An RV parked for extended period is going to stand out. Stealth is best for regular or longer term parking. Anything but a car or van is more noticeable if parked regularly.
My small box truck (no solar, windows, or roof fan) can blend in but not as much as a van. Box trucks are used for work, moving and deliveries. A plaza location with numerous businesses could be using similar truck. Out of state plate can complicate things.
Go to towns with sheriffs or only highway patrol here in Northern California I see lots of rvs never issues parked everywhere
I have a ford transit connect cargo van and can park/sleep anywhere. Its the most inconspicuous vehicle on the planet

With us being in an actual motorhome stealth. Amping is interesting. We also have several dogs on board... which alll get walked before dark and a because I’m in my bed by 7 typically and the dogs have been trained to go to bed with me. Lol!

I used to be a shuttle driver at a casino. I would often see cats in the windshields of the 18 wheelers, and one day when I picked up a trucker with a cat I asked why a cat and not a dog? He said dogs bark and although it's nice to be alerted to trouble, when you stay in a different place every night the dog does not know what is a routine sound and what is somebody getting too close to your truck and they bark at everything, so he decided to get a cat and it worked out great and that's why you see cats in 18 wheelers!

In certain cities, if you see a few truckers parked at a HomeDepot, it is usually safe. But not at a Lowes! Also, movie theatre parking lots are good from 5pm to 1am for the late show. Then get out. Truck stops are accomodating too. All brands. However, they can be noisy and smoky with exhaust fumes. 24 hour casino parking lots are good for a few days in a row, but not for extended stays. Don't get on their S-List. They network with one another. Certain hotel/motel chains are ok, some are not. Test the waters. These places will get you off the public streets as long as you don't draw attention to yourself. Also, 24 hour gyms are good in quiet areas of the lot. I used to stay in a lot near a 24/7 ihop which did not bring any attention to me. ,, ever.

I need to go to the bathroom more than once a night so I would need portable toilet in the blocked off area. Your bed looks warm and cozy. I never thought of it till now but if someone was going to have a pet it would have to be something like a cat that doesn't make much noise.

I am sure it won't be long before you stop giving up your 'great spots'. Other's have shared and then found out that a bunch of others came rushing in and ruined their spots.

That's a great point. I live in an apartment....(not worth the landlord's time/money to install a peephole in the door and I couldn't peek outside without being noticed). I bought a $50 surveillance camera from AMZ that I connect to my phone and Ipad. Could this be used on/in a van RV?? (Maybe you can look out without revealing your presence).
Here where I live we have seasonal parking restrictions because of snow removal. So no parking anywhere on city/county streets during winter.
Also there are a lot of low class rv-ers that give good rv-ers a bad name.
I know that some churches might allow parking in there lots. Best to ask.

Soon purchasing a utility trailer ..create the inside ..but exterior will look like a plain utility trailer or horse trailer ...keep the exterior ..plain very stealth ..perhaps .......some orange traffic cones on the back on exterior ..to look really utility!

GREAT way to find stealth spots. Thanks! I am going across the country soon and will be sleeping in the back of my Nissan X-Terra. I have reflextic window inserts spray painted black for the “house” windows and a blackout curtain between the house and the cab. Now I know a lot more about finding a sleeping spot. Thanks!!

I've done a lot of stealth camping. I scout out the spot during the day but don't stop until night. I stop late at night, leave early in the morning and don't go back to the same place twice

Totally lost at night in the middle of nowhere, driving my Class C Mini Winnie, I had to stop, but there was no place. Miles and miles, more tired than ever, I finally saw lights in the distance which turned out to be one of those back-woods strip clubs. I pulled into the small parking lot too exhausted to care; locked the doors, opened the windows for air, and hoped for the best. No problems and I thought, these places employ security for both the club and the parking lot....this is probably one of the safest places to do this. I don't know; all I know is that I slept well, woke up to birdsong (and an empty parking lot except for me) , and cranked her up to go find some coffee and figure out where the hell I was. Whoever locked up that place for the night was probably used to seeing the occasional rv in the parking lot, and if there was no trouble then there was no trouble.
If you want to be extra stealthy in commercial/industrial estates look up commercial real estate and find a vacant and overpriced building in the area, you can find some with rear car parks and an unlocked driveway. I definitely prefer industrial areas unfortunately they often don't have a lot of shade.
I have a "Google cardboard" headset that I place my phone in and wear it like a normal VR headset. Add headphones and I have my own personal cinema in full 3D, I can watch movies or youtube and not leak any light or sound whatsoever. They are really good value, I paid 15$ for mine (Shinecon 2).

My hat is off to you for finding anything in the Denver Tech. Thanks for the tips on Google maps. Denver is pretty easy to stealth as streets are wide and people are not looking for it as much but Denver Tech can sure be a challenge!

I stopped stealth camping after an incident in California. In most places in California, its illegal to sleep in your car overnight. They will cite you or charge you with trespassing, which can go on your permanent record. I have a nice car and my AirBnB cancelled at the last minute. I was on my way to another campsite. I parked in an upscale neighborhood away for a few hours to sleep and it was after dark. I was there like 30 minutes (not even parked near a home) but in front of a park, and the neighbors called the police. I was so PISSED. I have a brand new car, so I was not an eye sore. I asked the cops, "Did I do something wrong?" He said, "The people in the homes were concerned about safety. There are hotels down the street". I have a brand new car and am a 43 year old woman with an education. LOL. I'm like. Ok, yeah right. What a paranoid bunch of creeps. I wanted to say, "Don't you cops have something else to do like catch thieves. No, they were there to harass a single woman who's housing fell through for the night. So when traveling through California, it's important not to wing it. There are tons of rest stops that are legal to sleep at up to 8 hours along the i5 corridor if you are passing thorugh. I also sleep at Pilot or Loves stations when passing through California. I did not get a trespassing charge, but the fact that MALE cops were threatening a WOMAN with it was very infuriating.

no, no sign at my overnight spot. i use a neck light (there is a link in the description, but i forgot to mention it) so light turns down then turn off overhead lights when the windows are open. thanks! great question
The no parking sign pointed to the driveway - no parking between the sign and the driveway.

Thank you, I used your information and found a car dealership that had new cars parked on the street. I just parked behind them on the side street and just fit right in. Of course I brushed my teeth and had my pajamas on and went to the bathroom before I parked.

biggest problem i see with staying in one spot to long if no one sees you they may assume the vehicle abandoned
