Line 6 Powercab Plus - Setting Up

- For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ I have to say, for a while, I was a little bit unsure of the Line 6 Powercab, since I assumed that it would require a lot of reworking of my presets to get a decent tone, as I do make liberal use of the Cab block's High Cut. However, I've been asking the chaps if I could get my hands on one to do some videos with and finally got a chance to do so - so thanks to Yamaha for that.
There are a few options for setting up and so this video is sort of looking at those for someone like me who is very new to the Powercab. Here I'm using a Powercab 112 Plus - which has the L6 Link - something I feel is pretty useful...

Option 4: L6 Link out to Powercab using speaker modelling, then XLR out from the Powercab to FOH, which emulates a mic in front of the Powercab sending the speaker modelled sounds to FOH.
I’ve used this method to great success. Sounds great.

Nice !! I'd be curious to hear (or "feel" should I say) such a set up in the room. Very interesting routing though, could be killer live ! If you felt like that Powercab brought some life and "relief", it's already a good sign. Awesome playing as always, the intro jam is killer !!
I use drive effects -> EQ -> Compression -> delays/reverbs/ I use the EQ for the specific purpose of cutting the highs out. I like your tones. They are very similar to what I am getting. Real smooth and warm.

Great video and suggestion! I’m going to use this method so that I can leave a powered monitor at our rehearsal spot but use my powercab at home and at gigs.

I'm doing something interesting with an Atomic Amplifire, sending 2 different cabs to the audio interface. 2 outputs from the Amplifire, one with greenback IR straight into the audio interface. The other output into the PowerCab Plus with no IR. Then PowerCab output to the audio interface, using vintage 30 cab. In the audio interface, I've got each of them panned left and right, and sending that to Reaper. Sounds really good. And huge bonus...while playing I get to hear the PowerCab speaker. It sounds SO good. And when volume can't be loud, I just turn the PowerCab and computer speakers all the way down and listen via headhphones thru the audio interface (or from Reaper, depending on track monitoring settings).

I would also love to hear your thoughts on using the Powercab with the Iridium.
Not sure I understood correctly at 5'25'', you sometimes cut the highs at 3.9 kHz ?
Thanks for your videos. How does the hx stomp and power cab sound with traditional pedals added? Like a palisades drive into hx stomp (clean amp model) into power cab plus. Or is it better to go traditional setup into tube amp and use hx stomp only for fx?

What powercab setting do you have on the IR output path and what setting do you have for the powercab on the Gain Block path?
I almost sold my helix before switching to the powercab 112 plus. Now I love it. Love the Jensen (jetson) speaker with any of the Fender amps. Hated my headrush frfr112.
I Have Headrush 8" and it sounds like Garbage! But for the price that's what i get
@@kane6529 Exactly, I bought the Headrush FRFR112 because it was cheap. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Spent twice as much to get a used powercab112 plus and could not be happier, well I could be happier but that would involve things best not discussed on yt.
I started with an Alto TS310. Not thrilled so I finally bought a reguar Powercab but just got the PC+ today. Should have got the Plus to start with. I like it that you can change speaker models per preset. The regular you have to go with FRFR or change manually and the control panel is on the back, not on top.
What minor scale are you using Dorian???
Nice vid! I'm considering a line 6 combo (pod go FX pedal / powercab ) I'm not an expert, I have a simple need. My only questions is: will I be able to plug both my pedal and laptop to the cab so I can jam to UA-cam tracks? Cheers! X
Power cab PLUS has usb. You can run backing tracks though it.
So when using the power cab are you using amp models in the helix or effects only?
Amp models yep only thing that's different is the signal to the powercab doesn't have a cab/ir
Question: Are you running the backing tracks through the Powercab plus??
Question : Is the line6 link set to input1?
I’ve studied u playing to a degree, and have Been able to convert this type of method the “#JCMETHOD” into some pretty awesome metal solos …very much apprciate what u do and the knowledge I’ve gained in watching your stuff…I just bought the big boy PC 2x12 ….I haven’t even had minute to open the box ..figured I watched ur set up ..thanks man 🍻
I have a question im having trouble finding irs that will work.in.powercab I know they need to be 48 k and 2048 mono but hard to tell before.u purchase and also what's diff between a ir and a preset in powercab
Glad you got around to the Powercab , have you tried with the Iridium yet?
One tip that I recently discovered, load the ‘ null IR’ from Strymon into the Iridium, knock a few decibels off in the editor and you get a really good signal level into the powercab. Sounds much better than just disabling the Iridium IRs and with the powercab model speakers it really does sound great in the room.

@@johnnathancordy you should also try running a valve amp into the powercab via load box . I run my JTM45 ( and others) this way. A JTM45 through modelled greenback at TV volumes with great sound and feel..... what’s not to like.
@@duncancartledge1667 yeh Ross from Yamaha has suggested doing some of this!
The key is getting a strong signal into the powercab, too little and it sounds unresponsive. When it’s just right it does feel like playing a speaker loud but at low volume. Honestly the best gear purchase I’ve made.
Shouldn't the cabs in the helix through the power cab in FRFR mode sound the same as using the same cab model in the power cab with the helix cab disabled? Does that sense?
Nope, because they developed speaker models specifically for the powercab - kind of a like a speaker impulse, the Helix cabs are IRs

Hah, my Helix is supposed to arrive on the 21st (got a great deal assuming the mail service doesn't lose it on the way!), I was *just* researching whether I should invest in a Powercab to go with it!
I got them both and I love them. I got the Powercab 212 plus. Spent a lot more money than I wanted to, but I am happy with the sound. I have used the Helix a lot more since getting the Powercab. I am just an occasional player for fun.... not gigging or doing studio work or anything.

Hi, Nice impro and backing track (as always). Trying to get the chords of the opening track. Dbmaj7 Cm7 Bbm7 and Dbmaj7 Bbm7 Fm7? Not entirely Shure about the chord (voicings).
Umm yeh pretty much, I think maybe second time we're going Dbmaj, Cm7 to Fm7 rather than what you've written?

@@johnnathancordy Thanks! Yes indeed, that's what I wrote :-), alternating between the two. Quite difficult to hear the chords with the compression and rather "washed out" mix, which is nice, but not helping for analyzing.
@@GuitarHugo no I mean the second time it doesn't hit the bbm7 before the fminor, I think it hits the c minor
I like the Powercab 212+. It's OK; sounds decent. They can keep the "speaker modeling". It's truly horrendous.
It's not a traditional FRFR. It's an Eminence-designed FR speaker optimized for guitar with a HF tweeter. Fine for me because I'm not using it for a Synth.
If I could go back, considering the price, and knowing what I know now, I would have purchased two QSC 8" or 10" powered monitors. Cheaper than the PC212+.
(Atomics are impossible to find in stock, and are too expensive by far.)
That way the stereo spread could be wider, and I wouldn't have this giant 212 cab in the room. I'd much prefer to have one monitor in each corner, far apart. That's the way to go if stereo effects are a part of your goal IMO.
What didn't you like about the speaker modelling? I didn't necessarily expect to like it as I use high cuts quite a bit etc, but I've found even just plugging the Pod Go in sounds pretty good - much better than I expected?
I have a PC112+ with my Helix LT, and I think the speaker modelling is great - by far my preferred “mode” to use.
@@foxmeisteruk I've found its working better with my presets than running in FRFR mode too...really like the cream back
I have a pair of atomics ! And they are the best frfr by a sonic mile and I’ve tried most of these types from the alto headrush Friedman ! Just a nightmare to get hold of not sure what as happened to production ! Presume they’ve stopped !
I use hx stomp straight into 112+ I love the amp models so much i even use xlr out to record

I have the 2x12 and I can’t get it to sound right. Sounds Very midrangey with a blanket covering the speaker......
I've heard that folks have differing experiences with the 2x12 - I think it has neo speakers?
I believe you should be running the volume knob on the helix at full and controlling the overall volume on the power cab ? 😎
There are a few ways to skin the cat - but I'm running the outputs of the L6 link hot enough to give the Powercab plenty of signal!
If using digital out from Helix to Powercab...crank vol knob up all the way on the Helix...

If you're really having sleeping problems (in my case I can't turn the ol noggin off, always some idea or smth going on in there) try cbd sleeping aids. It isn't like the other over the counter stuff for me, doesn't make me feel like crap the next day
