HBO Max decided to dive into the adult animation arena with VELMA, the Scooby Doo spinoff from Mindy Kaling. Despite negative reviews from pretty much everyone, the show seems to be the talk of the Internet. Or maybe that’s because of them…
Velma definitely raises some questions. Like where’s Scooby Doo in the Scooby Doo show? Why is every single character just a completely different person than the character they’re based on? Why is everyone so mean? Why does everyone love Velma? Why are they trying so hard to be snarky and meta?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to Velma.

Watching a pitch meeting instead of the product being pitched is TIGHT!

I thought he was just talking to me.

Same, i think its the first pitch meeting where he broke character before the end card lol
And before he apologized, I cried a little bit

Ryan is a satire prodigy.
That wasn’t satire. It was largely a vanity project.
I don't think that's satire. The writers made this show specifically for themselves based on their own very miniscule sense of reality. It appeals to them and them alone.

Let's take a moment to appreciate Ryan's decision to watch this show.
He made a great sacrifice for us
Hate watching is why shows like this are successful
Did he tho? :V
He's a hero we needed, not the one we deserved.
Well, technically there's about 14 of him, so they watched it in shifts and just filled in the blanks for the rest of them with puppets.
The moral of this story: Don’t hate watch shows, cause then they’ll be more likely to continue.
People really didn't hate watch it past the first episode if at all. It got terrible viewership, but HBO doesn't have much content so they're just greenlighting it because they have pretty much nothing else going.
@@MST3Killa I don't hate watch, period. If I don't like a show I'll go watch UA-cam instead.
@@Daviticus042 I don't either, because I value my time and why would I want to watch something bad when I could watch something good instead? As I said, people really didn't hate watch this show, though. The viewership was very, very low but HBO doesn't have much else made right now, so they renewed it simply because it's something the CAN make. As soon as they get more programming, this will be thrown out.

The scary thing is, there had to be some kind of actual pitch meeting to sell the concept of the show. And it probably wasn't too different from this.
@mohamed zayan actually it was very much the same, barely anything changed
It wasn’t, according to screenwriters who’ve talked to Ryan
Sounds like a bunch of man hating lesbians made this show..and you can tell from the dialogue in it just how much it shows the thought process of the writers and that all the characters would be obsessed with Velma while she's a piece of shit mocking men and everyone else...almost like how the writer views herself.

And all the other characters' personalities are going to be scrapped too to make them constantly worship the ground Mindy, I mean, Velma walks on."
"Ok, I get it. But wouldn't the audience want to see Velma Dinkley, a quirky, slightly sarcastic, passionate, kind, nerdy girl, and not Mindy?"
"But this IS Velma."
"Really? How?"
"She's Velma, except that she looks little to nothing like the orginal, is openly sexist and racist to other characters, talks back to authority, disrespects her friends and family, think she's better than everyone, and has everything handed to her without trying."
"...Almost as if it's just a Mindy Kaling fantasy where everyone falls in love with her while she projects all her insecurities and anger from society onto them."
"I'm getting some major Joker flashbacks!"
"Wow! Wow, wow, wow."
"We truly live in a society."
"Yes, sir, we do!"
"Societies are tight!"
"How are we going to go about making this one of the most hated tv shows of all time?"
"It's going to be super easy, barely an inconvenience."
Producer Guy is *MUCH* less stupid in this one, and raises entirely legitimate concerns with uncharacteristic frequency. I love it. This is the first one of these I’ve seen where Ryan isn’t just pointing out the flaws in a poorly-conceived project, he’s clearly upset about it. Again: I love it! More, please.
I mean, I recognize that Producer Guy has to stay pretty neutral, so you can’t do this every week, but even so I would like to see him borderline-breaking character now and again. It’s surprisingly fun. I mean, this stuff is always fun, but this one is better since it just feels like it’s more personal to Ryan.
The more upset Ryan genuinely is, the smarter Producer Guy is.
The worse the actual thing he's making a pitch meeting of the smarter and more moral producer guy is. Until screenwriter guy reminds him of money of course.
Also Producer Guy: "Aww, baby! Good point, yeah, alright!"
For more of producer guy grappling with projects he's realizing are majorly flawed, I'd recommend the pitch meeting for Twilight Breaking Dawn. Ryan lays down some of his best and most surprising acting in case you haven't seen it!
Yeah, when they ruin cartoons, they cross the line. I don't mind adult humour about the show, but stop ruining it already. Honestly, though, when they ruin any show, they cross the line.
I was worried with 30 seconds left he hadn’t sad “super easy, barely and inconvenience”….I’m glad he came through in the end
Don't worry even with only 30 seconds left it was super easy, barely an inconvenience.😀
I think it would have been funny, given the source material if he didn't say it. People would have gotten uncomfortable, and there would have been backlash, not unlike Velma. You could say that creating an uproar in the comments would be super easy, barely an inconvenience.
and then he misspoke on his catchphrase haha "inconeveniance"
That line is at least 36% of the reason I watch these.
Coming through in the end is tight!
"You can't be meta AND wholesome!"
Hi-Fi Rush: "Allow us to introduce ourselves."
The fact that this show got a second season shows that HBO doesn't understand that people not watching something means it's unsuccessful.
2:24 Pitch "She's the main character so they don't have a choice", response "Is that how that works?"
Every one of your lines is a gem. Good stuff man!
Agreed. Love the burn about intellectual properties and lack of originality too.
I have in fact seen that work. That’s why everyone still makes excuses for Darth Vader being a genocidal madman after all.
I can think of at least two other shows where the side characters are more beloved than the main character. Orange Is The New Black and How I Met Your Mother.
Ryan's made hundreds of these videos, all of which use the exact same plot device, and still somehow finds a way to make every single pitch meeting, unique.
Usually it's because of a scathing breakdown that is more humorous
Well you see for Ryan, it’s super easy, barely an inconvenience.
@@triffin Being super easy, barely an inconvenience is *tight!* So I'm gonna need you to get all the way off my back about that!
It’s the thing that made phineas and ferb so great.
So you have a comment for me?
Yes sir, I DO!
So who's this for?
Me. Yep. That sums it up.
"....less scary investment for ya....baaaaby...." hahahahahaah
In a time where so many shows and movies are attacking the target audiences, that line of sincere appreciation for us watching his content goes a VERY long way.
Being nice to your target audience is TIGHT!!
"Who is it for?"" "For me."
Truer words have never been spoken. These mfs are just stroking their own egos at the expense of quality.
Some target audiences need attacked, like the toxic masculinity of heman
@@Ottophil LoL if your grammar was better, the joke would land...still with a flop.
@@Ottophil no they don't. And anyway, He-man was a hero, not toxic.
“In what ways are these characters related to the originals?”
“Clothing. And (almost) all their names”
That line just killed me for some reason 😂
I like that he doesn't even specify whether they wear the *same* clothing as the originals or that they just wear clothing, as the originals did.
I've read that Norville was Shaggy's birth name in the original, so technically he does have the same name.
The funny thing is, Norville actually _is_ Shaggy's real name. It has been for 35 years since A Pup Named Scooby-Doo.
@@binkyboy448 Congratulations! You found *the* funny thing about "Velma"!
(Now can they please take it off the air?)
@@binkyboy448 Yeah True, but his friends always called him Shaggy so I would still say its a name change in a way.
Absolutely insane to think someone someone actually pitched that garbage in real life
Sadly i sort of get the creators motivation behind this. A normal Scooby-Doo show among dozens of already existing Scooby-Doo shows would've just blended in and become forgotten. This was basically the only way to be noticed 😂😂
@@struttux5156 not really, they could have added a new character that actually works in world that will be a standing Scooby media figure, or done something from the villain's side, really anything but what they did
Its a show that alienates its own audience
@@JonathanRodriguez-nz9nw Would any of us be here talking about it if they did that instead? The kids would like it probably but it would just be another scooby show.
@@struttux5156 oh i would! But im a scooby fan
I seem to come back here every couple of weeks and re-watch this... very cathartic.
I can't believe Ryan actually watched this to bring us this pitch meeting. What a hero and a legend 😭😭
Tons of people are watching this show, since so many idiots exist. Their excuse of watching it is 'hate watching,' yet they are still causing it to profit and get views, so the joke is really on them, not the show
@@pyropulseIXXI Prime example of "playing yourself"
It was painful to watch
@@pyropulseIXXI many people probably just watched ep 1 just to see if the show is really bad...
Then noped out afterwards. Only a miniscule amount would finish the show and most of those are critiques. (Heck even rather High Guardian Spice probably has a better critique, and did atleast do better than Velma despite their enumerous flaws)
I only watch other people hate watch this.
This is exactly how the pitch went. Mindy made it for herself
Pretty sure this show is just Mindy Kaling having her own version of therapy set to animation.
that indian bird reeks of insecurity about the fact she's not a pretty white girls and can't get attention from the men she's attracted to which's made her bitter AF
Right and everyone has a crush on her (Velma) cause she’s a narcissist
@@Missjunebugfreak Lashing out at people isn't really therapy, and this show is just Mindy lashing out. If anything, this show is just going to make Mindy's already hideous mind even worse.
@@chasethecolors Ten bucks says Mindy hates that she wasn't born a pretty white blonde girl. She comes from a rich family, never worked an honest job, pursued an acting career to stoke her narcissism, and so almost befits that typical shallow Valley Girl image. All she lacks is the ethnicity/looks.
She's not attractive enough to be the girl every guy openly wants to bang, and she's got such an ugly soul that no sane guy wants to be with her. At the end of the day, I'm sure she just wants to be the hot girl that men will bend over backwards to shower in affection that she doesn't have to reciprocate.

I love how when he goes meta he walks toward the camera
"So, who's this show for?"
"Well, I'll tell ya, sir. ME."
Truly the Mindy Kaling pitch meeting of all time.
Seow, seow, seow, seow, seow, seow, seow, seow, seow...
Mindy: “I’m going to create a new show about me in high school”
Execs: “No one wants to see that”
Mindy: “What if I completely rip off Scooby Doo, but really it’s about me in high school?”
Execs: “wow wow wow wow….wow wow”
I love her taste
@@leeadams4934 Herself?
Should've superimposed her face just for that one shot.
Ryan breaking the 4th wall to be wholesome to us really means a lot to me. Both because I appreciate the kindness and because it reminds me how sick I am of 2010s style humor.
Breaking the 4th wall to be nice and wholesome is tight!
That moment was . . . weirdly comforting?
That was my favorite part too. It was clearly very sincere.
As soon as it was done in a mainstream movie (sorry Deadpool but this one is on you) the joke format was dead.
@@Batchall_Accepted what's the Joke format?
Ryan telling me to watch otters holding hands is now my favorite youtube outro ever bar none
Otters holding hands.
Because we all need some cuteness after this show.
Ryan isn't holding back the punches and I love it.
So…so…so…so….😂
Once again Ryan made something more entertaining than the actual show 😂
ok but in this case it was a very low bar.
At this point anything is more entertainign than Velma 🤣🤣
In this case, if he'd done five minutes of black screen with no audio it still would have been more entertaining than the actual show.
That was one of the most scathing Pitch Meetings to date and still far better than the show deserves.
I don't even consider "aquiring" it, let alone hate watching it.
watching a turd for 30 minutes is more entertaining then Velma
