Well wonder no more, because that movie came out 15 years ago and it was called Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny definitely raises some questions. Like did they copy/paste this premise from The Force Awakens? Why do all older Harrison Ford characters now have terrible lives? How did Zoller survive without a scratch the exact thing that took out Dennis Hopper in Speed? How do these bad guys keep knowing where to pop out? How hard to Helena punch Indy to drag him from Ancient Greece all the way to New York City?

It's been said a millions times already, but Indy riding off into the sunset with his Father, Marcus, and Sala really was a perfect ending. For me Indiana Jones will always be a trilogy.

I agree, though when I stop to think about it I really do like the ending of Crystal Skull. It's a very happy ending. Indy gets his job back, his name cleared, marries the love of his life, and will have time to connect further with the son he didn't know he had. He has a family and can spend his twilight years in well-earned peace. Crusade's ending was better, but damn all if Skull's ending doesn't work as well.
It's the best ending to one of the best, if not the best, trilogies ever made.

When I watched Teddy handcuff the goon to that grate underwater my immediate thought was "OH-mygod he just murdered that guy...that's gonna be in the pitch meeting".

Yeah I thought he was just going to escape by swimming through the opening in the grate that the big guy couldn’t fit through anyway…instead he leaves the guy to drown…seems kinda dark for a 12 year old kid.

The writing is definitely better.
You know is historically most movies released are not great, right? We’re not exactly on a down curve; there’s still about the same ratio of exceptional, mediocre, and terrible movies released. It’s all relative, of course, but it seem people get make emphatic statements like this a bit to hastily without actually considering the reality of the statement.
Not needing to actually watch the movie because they tell the whole plot is TIGHT!

The only and best part of our unceasing parade of horrid films is the concurrent, growing treasury of Ryan George's Pitch Meetings. I often enjoy these more than the actual films he's critiquing!
And I do think Ryan has introduced a new catchphrase in this video: "Copy and paste, baby!"
Ryan has saved my hundreds of dollars in movie tickets and popcorn.
You can always tell when Ryan legitimately hates a movie or a show based on how extra snarky his jokes are 😂

@@TheSmokingMustache That might actually have been the problem because JRD is an Englishman (Welsh background, I think, and only 78, btw 😉), not an actual Arab. This is really baaad nowadays because actors are only allowed to play exactly what they are in real life (meaning Sallah needs to be played by some dude who has a Mediterranean background which they think is close enough to being an Arab) and that is not the case with JRD. But he is a beloved iconic character, so he still had to be in the final movie (which, honestly, is the only reason I'm considering to watch it at some point when I don't have to pay extra for it). Now, what to do? Simple: Just put him in for a short moment.

He used it on Top Gun also for the trench run to hit a small target without his targeting computer.... lol
He has actually used this phrase a couple of times in other Pitch Meetings but this was the first that actually had the same iconic actor playing his iconic character being upstaged and replaced in his iconic franchise in the exact same manner. They just stopped short of killing him and you know they filmed that version but backed off because they realized they were making a “Star Wars” again.
Fans were predicting Indy was going to die since the movie was announced and Harrison has said Indy dies with him, no recasting, no reboots (sorry Chris Pratt) so you know eventually the scene/version where he stays in the past gets leaked. Unless they already destroyed it. Release the “Indy stays in the past” cut

thats been their motto for a while now. it case you havent payed attention to all the live action re-makes of all their popular movies that went splat
Problem is, they completely destroy said characters in their sequels and live action adaptations. They think they're "updating it for a modern audience," but that isn't what the fans who made the original successful want to see (unless they're idiots who weren't genuine fans of the original). Make original stories and characters to push "the message." Leave original characters alone.
Not just Disney. Any studio that made a bad sequel.

Just watched this film and I've never seen someone that summed up my feelings on a film more accurately. My god.
Even a casual observer or film audience can clearly see the edits, re shoots, doubles(stand ins) CGI. I'd add IF you plan on doing stunts, CGI, re shoots; re think casting a child or teen actor. 🤔 A kid may look 8 then 15min later look 14.
I didn’t watch a portion of it but came here finally. Can’t believe they just straight up killed mutt off screen Ik crystal skull wasn’t well liked but it’s also been a long time since that movie to just say”he died”
I used to hate bad, lazy movies but now I love them because they make for great pitch meetings.

It gets to something when these pitch meetings scripts and plot lines are more creative, and entertaining than the Hollywood movies themselves. We're in a bad place at the moment.
Given what movies cost to produce nowadays it is not a very efficient method to produce material for pitch meetings, but it is not my money being set alight, so what do I care?

Well, there was that one movie about the 80 year old who went on an adventure at the twilight of his life to honor his late wife's dream of putting her home on Paradise Falls. That was a pretty good movie about a grumpy old man going on an adventure. I think if they got the writers who made that movie to make this movie that would work pretty good.
It's a shame nobody at Disney knows anybody at Disney.
Straight Story. Old man goes on a road trip to his friend's funeral driving a ride-on lawnmower. Wonderful film.

After listening to all this, I would’ve preferred a movie featuring a grown-up Short Round, Mutt, and Sallah going on one last adventure together.
Then near the end, Mutt gives Short-Round his father’s hat as a way of passing the torch onto him. Sallah smiles and tells them, “Indy would be proud.” Then all three of them could ride off into the sunset just like Indy did in Last Crusade
I’m actually glad they didn’t shoehorn Willie Scott and Short Round into this movie just for fan-service.

"Copy, Paste, baby!" Yes, this is the extent of creativity that has come out of most Hollywood films for several years now.
Well that's what happens when you keep trying to carry on 40 year old franchises that didn't need to be carried on. You couldn't recreate the magic even if you brought back the entire original cast, because they're all in entirely different place in their lives (when they aren't, y'know, dead.) And it also means any new cast members have to try and fill those shoes. Which in a movie that's built on nostalgia, is going to be basically impossible.

Sometimes I watch these w/earphones while my wife is reading and she will give me the side eye because I'll start giggling like a madman.
Funny thing is I didn't feel like it needed it for the stakes to be raised. ANYTIME a committed Nazi can get into the past with future knowledge it's a very very bad thing IMO.
My urge to watch Pitch Meetings always overcomes my urge to avoid spoilers.

It makes for a good joke, but in all fairness, that whole murder charge probably could be cleared with like one phone call. I mean the police had the bad guys chasing Indy with guns through the parade on tape and everything. He was mainly wanted because he had fled the scene of the crime. Among all things that could bother me, this is not even on the list.

I'm really liking Producer guy showing more resistance to Writer guy's BS. Just no-selling him on the bad guy surviving something clearly fatal. Sure it got pushed through anyway but I really, REALLY like the idea of the producer slowly over time actually realizing how terrible the writing is for some things and not going along with it. It's like character development or something!

I just watched this today. I didn’t see Indy as “bitter and angry”. He was lonely and depressed. His only child went off to war and died. His marriage fell apart as a result. So he started drinking more than he should just to deal with the pain. The important part is that by the end, he found purpose again.
I think Harrison Ford did such a tremendous job in this. He showed more sides of Indy than we’ve ever gotten before. Even in The Last Crusade. It was the story he wanted to tell.
Sure, but still, I have people around his age (he should be 69 or 70) in our family and they are active, some of the work, exercise, picking up new sports... and none of them drank from the Holy Grail. Indiana Jones had passions before family, he can dive into his work.

I just think that it shows he’s not perfect. He could have buried himself in his work or something else, but he didn’t. He made the wrong decision and is paying for it. Just like so many others in their lives.
Also, good point about the the Grail haha I never considered even considered that.
@@JNel77 And even if he didn't drink from the Holy Grail prolong his life this way, even if his body was not trained but ruined from all the stunts he performed, he was still an academic, a very smart and educated man with a sharp mind.

Studios should hire Ryan to do a pitch meeting before any movie is released, for possible re-edits. He's far better than a focus group.

Can someone explain to me why they were so keen on getting BBEG getting his face smashed on the train and him showing up just fine afterwards?
Like; He could have been knocked off. Stayed on the train when hit the bridge collapse. Gotten shot and fell into the water or any kind of movie trope that makes one go "Ahh.. But we didn't actually *see* him die!"
But in this movie they clearly did show us get absolutely destroyed on that train.
Excellent pitch meeting as always Ryan. One thing i found silly in the movie (among the many other silly things that is) is that they spoke to Archimedes in modern Greek not in ancient Greek!!!! (I'm Greek so that was hilarious)
Also, they don't even bring up that this is the same siege that ends with Archimedes' death? Like, Helena says something about them scaring off the Roman fleet, doesn't that mean they've saved his life, and thus already made a significant change to the timeline?
i loved the part where indy holds up the dial in front of the star destroyer to find the location of mordor
I loved the part where Indy said, "It's Morbin' time!" and knocked out Clubber Lang.
My favorite part was where Archimedes revealed that the real Dial of Destiny "was the friends you made along the way."
And told it to "Engage!"

I will say I think this one is much better done then the crystal skull. Captures a bit more of the okd Indiana Jones feel in a way.

Agreed. Say what you want about Crystal Skull, but Indy was still himself in that movie and he reconnected with Marion and his son through his own effort and not because a Mary Sue brought her to him magically out of a whim.

Just saw it last night. My immediate reaction was that younger Indy with old Harrison voice was weird. Love that Ryan pointed that out.
Overall, I had low expectations going in. It wasn’t as bad as I feared, but not as good as I hoped. Feel like Indy is exiting with a bit of a whimper which is disappointing.
That was the single funniest “oh my god” you’ve ever done
I think the true genius of Ryan is that on its face, pitch meetings are just comedy. But the comedy is just the delivery system for some high quality film critique.
Describing what is very obviously the entire purpose of the channel while pretending it's deep and thoughtful insight is TIGHT!

Every episode is almost 100% identical. The only difference between every pitch meeting video is what is pitched and in what order things are said... Its not a Wow, wow wow... wow... quality.
This is the first pitch meeting I’ve seen where the pitch meeting is actually less bonkers than the actual film.

One thing not pointed out was HONESTLY, if i found Archimedes' skeleton, saw it was wearing a wrist watch, and I was planning on going back in time... I would IMMEDIATELY check to see if it was, in fact, the SAME WATCH AS I WAS WEARING. That would be a HOLL' UP WAITAMINUTE moment for me.

1:12 the whole bit about insisting that dude was dead was great. Not the first time Ryan has done it, but I feel like this time he really harped on it a lot longer.
That scene in Speed was iconic in the 90s.
For much of the movie, I was waiting for some kind of explanation for him still being alive, like time travel or Nazi experimentation or something. Nope, never mentioned again lol.
@@colin8802 Honestly I was kinda expecting it to be time travel. The way he initially acted as though he did not know Indiana, didn't appear all that old, and then mentioned "See you in the past" made me think that him in the opening was actually his future self that traveled back. However, turned out to not be the case.

The first thing I noticed during the movie was how weird it was for young indy to sound like old indy, but when I talked to the people I saw it with after no one mentioned it. Glad to see it pointed out here
The biggest negative with huge de-aging like this. But apparently Harrison Ford wanted to play young Indy.
That's actually why I liked it so much: in Italy we dub everything so I didn't even know it happened in the original lol

By the time of The Last Crusade Harrison Ford already had a kinda rispy voice, so I actually didn't notice (or didn't mind, tbh)
I definitely noticed it. It wasn't synced very well either. All that money into the de-aging tech, and Indy sounded like... well, an 80-year-old Harrison Ford. Time to invest some money into voice technology, because otherwise, the visual de-aging was pretty spot-on.

This movie one wasn’t heavily reliant on CGI, goofy scenes like Indy surviving a nuclear explosion by hiding in a fridge, the fridge flying through the air then tumbling on the ground and Indy survives unscathed, if the Soviets killed Area 51 guards and infiltrated it that would be an automatic WW3, bad acting and dialogue, forgettable villain, and the scenes with Indy, Marion and Mutt feel more like from a family sitcom.
There were somethings in Dial of Destiny I didn’t like such as Indy wanting to stay in 212 BC without him saying that there’s nothing left for me in the present, but overall it was much better than Crystal Skull and most of Temple of Doom.

That's like reading a synopsis of a book and deciding not to read it. Everyone should read and watch every single book, movie, magazine and TV series in their entirety before expressing any opinions.
One of the most baffling things about this movie is that one of the biggest complaints about the last one was that "aliens don't belong to an Indiana Jones movie"... so this time it's a freaking time travel extravaganza! That surely belongs to an indiana jones movie, right?
And personally I didn't even have a problem with the aliens since they just represented an unknown higher power, not unlike the ones in the original trilogy. The story is about these mysterious skulls then at the end we just get a small glimpse at the alien and the flying saucer and the movie ends, keeping the mystery around them. This time they actually go back in time have a full action scene in the past, the bad guys die like idiots by crashing their plane, the protagonists walk around, talk with the people there and even if the scene ends abruptly from their perspective they basically had to slowly walk back to the present. It would have been the same if Indiana Jones 4 ended with a full on space battle with the aliens!
You, sir, talk with facts. I also have a problem with how the Alien thing was "too much", but a whole time-travel adventure was OK for the producers, because it's almost a centainly that aliens do exist in the vast universe, but time-travel is, at least with our comprehension of physics, impossible.
I really really enjoy these type of videos. Even for movies I didn't care for our have not seen the content is still hilarious and I really enjoy watching them. Please continue the great work you're doing.

Just watched the movie last night and honestly, it was a lot better than I expected. The only thing I had a really serious problem with was Mads Mikkelsen surviving getting knocked off the side of a moving train by a metal pole at full speed. WTF?
Yes! They could have just added a scar or something, but no...
@@Kimbp85 yeah he should've at least had a half mangled, two-face thing going on but nothing. And no explanation. Rewatching that scene too I did notice it really does smash him in the face. It would just be utterly unsurvivable on a train at that speed. And like, who found him and got him help before he died? It's too much
Mine with Harrison Ford. You can see it in him, and in interviews that he sick of reliving old characters. He wanted to go out legendary Han solo, not the old guy that gets stabbed in the chest. Same here; seriously, watch recent interviews. You can see the disgust on his face.
And his hat staying on while walking on top of the train 🤦♂️

It's really funny how the old indies seem to get a free pass with ridiculousness. They were always like that! I saw them as a kid and loved them, but they were also silly. Just a fun adventure movie.

6:09 Mostly agree with this pitch meeting but i watched the movie and pretty sure a government lady that was with the bad guys reported them and cleared the situation up.
Saw it too and didn't see the black FBI girl do that at any point, if anything she was doing hostile surveillance on Indy, the Nazis, Helena et cetera. Before she got gut shot unceremoniously.

I honestly think letting Indiana Jones live his last moments in the past would of been a better ending then what we got.
Every plot suggestion I’ve seen in UA-cam comments has been better than the plot of the actual movie.
100% thought they were going with the, "It was Indy's body in the coffin all along," reveal.

As someone who has worked in Hollywood, I can confirm that "copy, paste" is not only a movie-making term but also a production strategy that drives entire productions teams so crazy, that's all they ever talk about at industry conventions held at the Staples Center every year.
