Steam in Romania, 2016 - Moldovita

  • Moldovita was a forestry system running through attractive countryside. The lines were abandoned several years ago but with the aid of local railway enthusiasts, in particular Georg Hocevar, the first eleven kilometres have been preserved and trains can now use this section again. Reghin 0-8-0T built in 1984 was in use. No snow but frosty mornings produced some good exhaust. February 2016.

    Awesome video in beautiful countryside and thank you for sharing. May I ask where is the location n Romania? I have plans to visit Bulgaria this summer and would like to visit that area in Romania.

      Hi, Thanks for your interest in my Romanian videos, they were all shot in the north of the country, not far from the Ukraine border. The nearest large town and airport is Cluj. With the exception of the Wasser Valley you are very unlikely to see any steam locos running or indeed any trains at all. The trains in my Romanian videos were the result of organised photographic charters. The Wasser Valley line with its headquarters in the small town of Viseu de Sus run regular steam hauled tourist trains in the summer and autumn. It is well worth a visit. I suggest you do an internet search for Viseu de Sus to get the latest information on when trains will be running.

      This is at Moldovita in Suceava county, the nearest large town is Suceava and its newly refurbished airport (SCV) has regular direct flights from the UK and elsewhere. I rode on this railway in summer 2017 and there were 7 passenger cars, each full. There is a daily tourist timetable which includes three steam-hauled return trips per day in peak season; see www.cfi.ro/index.php?p=1_12
      It is disappointing when people suggest that Romania's attractions are limited to the west of the country!

      Moldovita este la mare distanță de Bicaz Cimenteria Bicaz a fost închisă în 1989. Azbestul nu mai este folosit nicăieri, deoarece reprezintă un pericol pentru sănătate. Aceasta a fost o cale ferată forestieră, nu cred că a fost folosită vreodată pentru o fabrică de ciment. Acum este doar o cale ferată turistică.
      Moldovita is a long way from Bicaz The Bicaz cement works closed in 1989. Asbestos is no longer used anywhere because it is a danger to health. This was a forestry railway, I do not think it was ever used for a cement works. It is now only a tourist railway.

    How did WW2 affect that area and how many people from that area are missing because of that war?
