- Julian Ovenden was one of Lady Mary's suitors (as ''Charles Blake') in ITV's "Downton Abbey." He can also occasionally be seen in TV re-runs of "Foyle's War" as Michael Kitchen's pilot son. Here he is in his other career as one of Britain's most exciting tenors, singing a well-known number from 'South Pacific' at the 2012 'Broadway Sound' Prom in London's Royal Albert Hall, with John Wilson conducting his own superb Orchestra.
Note: a re-mastered version of this has also been uploaded here, along with a photo of Julian as 'Charles Blake' ... • Julian Ovenden sings '...
Julian Ovenden has been working hard at promoting his new CD. I have pre-ordered it from Amazon. For all those critical of his voice - I think it is a lovely voice which has matured over the past year. There are not many voices like his now. Where are all the wonderful singers of the past - Howard Keel, Gordon MacRae and going back even further, Nelson Eddy? I grew up in an era when singers could really sing - whether they were crooners like Sinatra, Bing Crosby or Vic Damone - they could actually sing!
Saw Julian in the Lincoln Center production of "Showboat" a few years back. FIRST ROW! He was so wonderful. I adore him in everything he does. There's a UA-cam clip from the Proms of Julian and Sierra Boggess doing West Side Story and other selections. Just terrific. I'd love to see him in South Pacific; perhaps my long wished for trip across the pond will happen!
Next we could talk about melody. Songwriting.
Julian oven den is a beautiful tenor with smashing good looks love his music

Hi margaret louise, i so agree with you, love his voice!i i heard him sing a Jerry Herman song. Song of the sand at a concert in chelsea recently. Sheer magic.
I thought the intro would never end......congrats toJulian for still being awake?
He is simply wonderful with a smile that can melt a glacier.
I see at least 3 of us are enjoying Julian today!!!!!
Those moments when you're going through UA-cam and you see someone you recognise (as an actor) and get the surprise of your life!!
Utterly thrilling performance....love it
I think if Lady Mary heard Charles Blake sing a solo, she might have married him. LOL!
Agreed...
Agreed
Hahahahaha
I could have kicked her for turning him down. And I’m not a violent person.
I love him singing
An excellent actor. Never realised he could sing. Great stuff.
Saw him at In South Pacific at Chichester Festival Theatre a few weeks ago. He played Emile du Beque and was awesome!
It's says a lot about his range and versatility that he can take on the music of both Emile de Beque and Lt Cable.
A voice to fall in love with instantly
I saw and heard Julian Ovenden for the first time in the West End in South Pacific in 2022. What a wonderful singer and actor! His singing gave me goose bumps. I am amazed that l had never heard of him before.
I saw the same show and was blown away by Julian's voice and acting. I too was surprised that I had never heard of him. I also get goose bumps when I hear him sing.
From south Pacific love this film..
It starred John Kerr, singing this🥰
OMG! The quality of his voice! Men don't sound like that anymore. Amazing.
Something is very special about him. He and Sierra are so good together!!
lovely tone to his voice, and such control, beautiful.
Fabulous , perfect 10 , great in Downton Abbey and Foyle’s War too
One of the beautiful songs from South Pacific. Rosa Larsen
He is British Hugh Jackman! Just as beautiful a man, acting proven in Foyle's War, singing voice sublime. How have I just now learned about his vocal talents?!?
Hugh is British! I was at school in South London with his father and uncle.
@@chrisausten9803Hugh grew up in Australia.
Handsome and talented actor! Beautiful surprise that he has a stunning voice!
He sure is handsome
Just imagine someone singing that song to you .
The sweet sweeping magic of a bygone era.
Pure talent. No gimmicks.
Ohmygosh what a beautiful voice, sounds like golden age singers of yore.
beautiful. Wish music was still like this
What a voice. Memorable song fro South Pacific
I adore south Pacific..my children did the french...dites moi
This song reminds of how sweet love was when we all were so ‘young.’
Yes.
I never hear this song without remembering a day when Mom dropped me and my sister off at the movies in downtown Pensacola. She wasn't happy with our choice of movie, but let us go anyway. At the last minute we decided to go to the Saenger Theater instead to see "South Pacific." So happy we changed our minds!
You made a good decision. Love that musical. My brother is a c130 pilot and has been stationed there twice and once in Milton. He even got to fly Fat Albert. I would fly in to Pensacola for events I was interested in ( and stay with my brother and his wife ). The very last event was Andre Rieu and his JSO. But he is retired from the USMC now, and is an attorney.
I no longer live in Pensacola, but have family there and go back often. It is always a time of consolation for me.
@@bro8974 What a beautiful decision.
His voice sounds exactly like William Tabbert”s who first delivered this beaiutifiul song to the world in 1949 starring Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin. Amazing to hear it sung that way once again. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein probably were the most prolific composers for the musical theater and crafted songs that are spoke to our hearts about love and love lost, life choices, racism and bigotry, which made us think a bit more and face the mirror in self reflection and point the misgiuided in in a kinder direction. Most can still move you to tears, I hope they would created courses for children to teach traditional songs that are just as much a part of the American cultural landscape as any other historical events taught in education today, Exposure to the arts can calm the restless, inspire creativity at an early age and make the world a bit more civil and kind,
I was a newsboy in Pensacola, FL in 1965. That spring was so beautiful, and I was convinced the song had been written about spring in Pensacola. Worse, I would sing it at the top of my voice as I delivered papers unaware that people could probably hear me in their houses. Now I wonder what they thought!?
Bing Crosby once said, "...the singer is only as good as the song's composer . This one composed by Richard Rodgers & words by Oscar Hammerstein. Hence you have Julian at his absolute best with this classic from South Pacific - Broadway 1949
His Voice control is AMAZING
Julian and The wonderful John Wilson , utterly perfect . We need live music in our lives , it’s life enhancing
All those episodes of Foyle’s War and I had no idea he was a singer!
Faultless. At last England has a great romantic tenor star! Plus looks.
Best rendition ever of one of the most beautiful and iconic songs ever! Bravissimo 👏🏻
I played a a version I really liked from a 1957 production (film) of south Pacific. It's close but this is slightly better. It simply may be the recording technique and environment in the decades of difference. What a voice! In the 1957 production actor John Kerr (playing Lt. Cable) appears to sing the song but it is actually performed by Bill Lee. The setting and scene are so emotional that one has to listen to just the voice and music. Young Lt. Cable falls in love with a dark skinned island girl. He is from the wealthy Philadelphia family of Cable and Cable. Our young Lt.is a Navy pilot. The family will disown him if he pursues the relationship - which he does.
He will give up the meaningless lure of wealth for love. Not a happy ending when he is killed in action. A powerful song when attached to the South Pacific story. How often in life is this message played out.
I have just discovered Julian Ovenden and I am totally entranced by his amazing voice. Can’t wait to hear more!
Never heard it sung better - many thanks !!
Julian Ovenden is a marvelous combination of a superb tenor voice and the acting skills to present his lyrics with feeling that pierce our hearts. Bravo!
The fact that he's beautiful does not hurt either.
Loved him as Andrew Foyle. Cool that he can sing.
lol, I've only known Julian Ovenden as a singer - so for me it was "cool that he could act" :)
I know. Andrew Foyle was a great character he played so well. And on top of it all he sings in his gorgeous and powerful tenor voice.
I grew up with a dad who had great music on the “stereo” morning and nite. Julian Zi discovered on UA-cam in the Proms London annual festival. First opposite Sierra Borgess, who is equally as talented. Then last year she headlines a Dillon Colorado open concert over beautiful Lake Dillon. Turns out she is from Denver and plays especially all over Europe in major locations. Where has the talent been all my life??
What I enjoy so much about Julian Ovenden is his absolute devotion to the text and the overall vision of every song he sings.
He can really act a song as well as sing beautifully, They don't always go together.
Beautiful Movie! Mom’s favorite and therefore mine too as I remember Mom!
A Rogers & Hammerstein GREAT “SOUTH PACIFIC!”
I just found his voice. Too!! I am so in Love with him and his Beautiful Voice!!!
Beautiful! And so is his voice.
its his obvious Joy in music and of singing that comes across and that is what is important because that is what brings joy to the listener
10 years ago…. Still love his voice & song.
Julian is absolutely fantastic and I can see him singing as Luitinent Cable in South Pacific. One of my favorite R & H musicals. A musical of the 20th Century that should be remembered.
Came here after watching him in an episode of Poirot didn't know he had a voice and what a great one handsome too.
I wonder if that was "After the Funeral" where Julian played an actor and very good he was too. Michael Fassbender was also in the cast and he was very good too!
Just love his voice.superb.
Who knew Detective Foyle's son, Andrew, would go on to Downton Abbey and then showed up tonight on "Person of Interest". And who could know he has a great singing voice!!! Move over, Hugh Jackman. Julian Ovenden is coming through!!
AND... JFK on "Smash!"
And Baron von Trapp in "Sound of Music" (Live and Televised)..
Love Julian Ovenden singing and The music from South Pacific
It's amazing I have only found this guy on Utube recently.
Absolutely amazing singer
Check him out in the Soliloquy from 'Carousel' which he acts equally as well as he sings ...
ua-cam.com/video/Sb-6UH4nxCg/v-deo.html
Snap I am surprised he's not more well known
Fantastic
Thank you so much 😀
Great voice. Extremely talented
Gorgeous voice!
What a truly gifted vocalist. Love listening to him sing. His interpretation of the lyric, tone, diction and phrasing are just so beautiful to behold. Marvelous.
+Chuck Cissel Easliy one of the greatest tenors of our time. Sheer magnificence.
Agree, agree, agree about Julian O, but a quibble with that darn microphone. What a distraction. Maybe not to an audience in the auditorium, but to us watching on tv? Hasn't technology gotten to the point where the mic can be a little less intrusive?
I noticed his tie was crocked.
Fantastic voice and actor. I saw him on stage last year in the Chichester Festival Theatre's touring production of South Pacific in which he was in equally good voice as the Frenchman Emile le Beque
Julian is absolutely wonderful in whatever he does 🤩
His physical beauty is just the start of it!
Damn he is just so handsome
Covid 19 has stopped all this incredible live entertainment. We are destroyed without it. Time to fill the theatres again, it's been long enough.
You are speaking aspirationally. Or... You better be. If so, agreed but now it's even better; you'll have to find your own voice, stop being a consumer and be a giver.

Yes this covet thing is a scam which should be obvious if you think about it.Why is money free of the virus but nothing else.
Julian really suits the Rogers and Hammerstein repertoire. I liked him a lot as Capt Von Trapp in the ITV live version of Sound of Music a few years ago.
ITV3 (Channel 10) is currently re-running early episodes of "Foyle's War" late at night. Julian pops up in a few of them as Andrew Foyle, the pilot son of the detective (played by Michael Kitchen). Julian doesn't sing but he's just as good as an actor!
What a delight! This song is an old favorite of mine and I am a new fan of Julian Ovenden! Don't know how I've missed out on him thus far, but I will certainly look for more of his work. Julian reminds me a bit of the late great Canadian singer, Robert Goulet!
I think he is more of a live-show or opera-type singer/performer; he has the poise, the breath control, the volume to reach out to a great audience. I LIKE IT! Bravo, Julian Ovenden!
I agree and have uploaded several of Julian's appearances on here. Tap his name and my screen name in the ' search' field at the top ... Julian Ovenden adam28xx ... and you'll get "If I Loved You," "Oh What a Beautiful Morning," "Maria" and several others!
@@adam28xx Thanks, Adam, but I already found those sites in the area on the right side of my screen, and I already listened to several of them and bookmarked them for my future enjoyment!
Very talented with stage presence and A captivating voice. Thank you
Julian and Sierra both have great acting talent on top of their wonderful singing. Each comes to the stage in character appropriate to the song they are performing.
Utter bliss goosebumps, and tears
Such amazing content and control
Julian sings this beautiful, romantic song with passion. What a great rendition! 😊👍
The orchestra and the arrangement are bliss.
Still womderful.🦋
What a revelation! Julian Ovenden's beautiful voice and interpretation of classic crooner greats is absolutely perfect! Also, the character of his sound is reminiscent of the great Al Jolson, a century ago, and we haven't heard anyone sing like that, viscerally and unforgettably, in a long, long time. Talk about putting a song over! Can't wait to hear more. And like another commenter wrote, there must be some way to incorporate his terrific voice into future episodes of Downton Abbey!
I wonder if he'll be on Downton Abbey for very long as he's taken off and won't be back for maybe a year, I don't think he's really one of Lady Mary's suitors. Julian's got I think more interest in pursuing a movie career now, he left Foyle's War after only a few years and I missed him back then and now he makes very short and rare appearances on Season 5.
Beautiful songs they were timeless
One of the best renditions of this beautiful song from SP.
touch your hands
And my arms grow strong,
Like a pair of birds
That burst with song.
My eyes look down
At your lovely face,
And I hold a world
In my embrace.
Younger than springtime, are you
Softer than starlight, are you,
Warmer than winds of June,
Are the gentle lips you gave me.
Gayer than laughter, are you,
Sweeter than music, are you,
Angel and lover, heaven and earth,
Are you to me.
And when your youth
And joy invade my arms,
And fill my heart as now they do,
Then younger than springtime, am I,
Gayer than laughter, am I,
Angel and lover, heaven and earth,
Am I with you!
And when your youth
And joy invade my arms,
And fill my heart as now they do,
Then younger than springtime, am I,
Gayer than laughter, am I,
Angel and lover, heaven and earth,
Am I with you.
We love Julian Ovenden in Foyles War...now we have heard him sing...truly beautiful voice..a very gifted young man
Joan Allen he made my heart skip a beat in Foyle’s War. I knew he sang and is married to an opera singer but WOW!
Great Julian! Pure talent!
I love his voice, it sounds like he's from the late 1920s
Really enjoy this man's voice. He's pretty incredible. I'd pay to hear him in concert any day of the week...
such a wonderful handsome singer/actor! Love to see and hear more of him!
Nobody does it better than Julian Ovenden!!! That melodious voice, the diction, great feelings!! What a special treat!!! Would have loved to see him on Broadway.
Perhaps you should buy new batteries for your hearing aid.
Who says he was on Broadway? You can't have read the caption properly; this concert was in London at the Royal Albert Hall, & is just a Broadway segment. You might not need a hearing aid, but maybe glasses!
Superb, thanks very much. This is from when music was music.
The perfect voice for a wonderful song. Thank you all.
Beautiful voice!
The generation of this day , missed this ,at the movies .
Paul K , I'm not sure some would appreciate it. They miss the time of the greatest generation. That includes the large quantity of quality talent in both Great Britain and the states. If you ask them who was Ezio Pinza or Mario Lanza, who both had the popular recording, they say, who ?
Good god he's good isn't he?!!
Aled Rees I love his rendition of the song especially at the end when he sings the ending very softly, it's so beautiful to me, don't know if this was the way Richard Rodgers wrote the song this way as I don't really hear it sung this way even in the original 1949 Broadway cast version, but Jason Danieley in the Lincoln Centre production, sings it in this way as well.
I wish Julian would make a dvd of all the fantastic songs from the musicals I have followed Julian since foyle war royal dishy Dr cheriton got the album's and a collection of his movies I think he could be the next bond with singing in the film or I wish they would bring him back as a doctor with his own series hope to see him on TV again soon
The opening chords are haunting, a perfect lead-in to a wonderful song.
He's got a gift from God!
My goodness. That's how to sell a song. Wonderful.
Wow! Gorgeous voice...one of my favorite R&H songs. The introduction alone puts a lump in my throat.
What a voice! So smooth....great music.
Mr. Ovenden is amazing. His voice, his phrasing, his diction - just perfect. Thanks for this post.
Julian is truly gifted. How fortunate we are to be able to see and hear him. A Complete artist who brings out the greatness in this song I have always cherished since first hearing it 80 years ago. BRAVO!
I've only seen him act on "Foyle's War." This is surprising and very lovely. 💙
I too enjoyed Foyle's war. What a surprise to discover what a fantastic singer he was.
He also stars in “The Royal” series.
Holy Smoke. What a voice. Have to say I appreciate the natural quality he brings to the song -- like a young soldier in love. Perfect. Would love to see him do this in a full production. He'd be great in this part.
A great tenor voice. He would be ideal for a Broadway production, wouldn't he?? BRING IT BACK.
Wow, sure needed this today. Watching from Wyoming-Thank You!🙋🏼♀️
Glad it was helpful!
Oh that was lovely!
one of the best versions of that song I have ever heard. Even better than the original and to think he is all ours as well. Everyone should hear this. he has the voice of an angel xxxxx
This is simply magnificent.
Listening to these again. Beautiful music, beautiful voice. Beautiful man.🎼
