Rogers and Hammerstein had so many hits and wrote extraordinary music and lyrics. The Sound of Music; South Pacific; The King and I; Oklahoma; and many others. And I was lucky enough to live in NYC and see them all on Broadway with the original casts.
Julian Ovenden 8 years on and he played the French plantation owner in South Pacific at Chichester Festival Theatre. One word describes his performance - stunning.
@@fiddlesticksbessette398 -- He's nowhere near as good as she is. She's wonderful; he's clearly competent, but I personally really dislike his voice; I find it unpleasantly nasal and a little too high and light. It's a question of taste and opinion, so yours may differ of course.
If I Loved You and the sublime People Will Say We're In Love were both written because Carousel and Oklahoma needed a 'love song' at the end of the first act but it wasn't time in the story for the characters to be really in love. What a brilliant idea both songs were and so true to the hesitant, questioning way two people really do fall in love.
Carousel was the first musical I watched as a kid along with Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals. They were the reason I became a Theater fan. To this day, I would sing "If I loved you" during my childhood. Sierra really does a brilliant take on this heartbreaking song with that amazing voice.
My first musical was Oklahoma and then later, South Pacific. My parents both met while in the Navy stationed in Hawaii during WWII, so South Pacific was very meaningful to them. My father had a beautiful voice, so he would play the records on Saturdays, and my sister and I would sing along. Then, I discovered Carousel, and “If I Loved You” became my favorite song.
JULIAN AND SIERRA! WOW! Julian and Sierra are both amazing talents- two of the best singers ever! I think they are simply wonderful together. In my view, they are the new versions of Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones! How wonderful!
Lovely legato from both. Sierra goes a tad sharp on high notes when she puts intensity into the sound....I hope she will work to correct this. Julian a bit too " refined" here, needs some element swagger and naughtiness!. But a wonderful performance from both.
Of course, it is difficult at best and perhaps inequitable to compare performers from one generation to those of another-especially to those who originated roles so very long ago. Still, I can state that this performance is as close to perfection as Rogers and Hammerstein could envision.
she's absolutely amazing -- her talent is prodigious . . . . she fits perfectly with Julian Ovenden ... their voices meld beautifully! sometimes it makes me cry with the beauty of their singing, interpretation!
Music from "The Musicals" does not get better than this - fabulous vocal dexterity from Julian and the gorgeous mega-talented Sierra - great work guys !!
Thank you forever John Wilson and BBC Proms! You have reintroduced some of the brightest and best musicals. Add Sierra and Julian and we’re all rendered spellbound. And thank you Rogers and Hammerstein for these priceless songs with genius lyrics. Just one request: maybe Jerry Herman in the future? Just a thought🥰
The announcer may have remarked that Oklahoma! was respectful of rural life. That is so true and needs to be said now more than ever as the rural expanses of America empty out. Great singing here, really great.
Great song, superbly well written, orchestrated, and performed. Sierra and Julian are simply faultless. A wonderful celebration of boys and girls. IF.....Absolute denial of the thunderously obvious. This particular version has become a very personal favorite. Thanks Hrern!
Been through that at least a couple of times, maybe more, probably anyway. I consider this song to be one of my favorites. Life is making memories. This couple’s most delightful performance has given me one to remember.
I have been glued to this wonderful orchestra and singers, unwilling to watch tv or read any of my books. Their talented ability to perform Broadway or movie musical scores has no competition. I mentioned what I am hearing to anyone who will listen to music on UT. I bought one cd of John Wilson and orchestra' from Amazon to have on other devices as Alexa. My speakers on the pc are better than she has. NC.
Julian Ovenden is one marvelously sensitive young man. He sees and feels the meaning in every syllable he sings then projects it with beautiful lyric intensity. A fine, highly polished performer is he, but I miss a certain element of swaggering loutishness -- of toughness -- that is an essential part of Billy Bigelow's character. Even so this is a very touching performance of possibly the most beautiful song in American musical theater.
When I worked in the mill, weavin' at the loom, I'd gaze absent-minded at the roof, And half the time the shuttle'd tangle with the threads And the warp'd get mixed with the woof, If I loved you? But somehow I can see just exactly how I'd be.... If I loved you, Time and again I would try to say All I'd want you^ to know- - - - If I loved you, Words wouldn't come in an easy way. Round in circles ^ I'd go- - - - Longin' to tell you ^ but I afraid and shy, I'd let my golden chances ^pass me by- - - Soon you'd leave me, Off you would go | in the mist of day, Never, never ^ to know- - - - How I loved you,- - - - ^ If ^I loved you- - - - - -

Lucky you!
Those two guys knew exactly how to craft the perfect love song. The melody and lyrics are perfect and the harmonies sublime. God, they were good!

I love the way that you can almost see the characters falling in love in If I loved you
Oh, if she had been able to play the lead in these films. She is such an actress as she sings.
It's the R&H "We're not in love love song"
Agreed!
No more….i’mgoing to sleep nowbuhbye
Sierra and Julian make life a bit of heaven. They rise above just singing with their terrific acting.
There is never a time I watch this and not get chills
Arguably the most enchanting beautiful duet of all R & H's repitoire, and these two nailed it.
It's got the most exquisite lyrics. All the way through, the lyrics match the characters. Brilliant writing lyrically.
I'd love to see a revival of this show starring these two!!
Fantastic music from the musical geniuses Rodgers and Hammersmith.
I agree. I would love to see a revival of “Carousel” with Sierra and Julian. They are two commensurate performers! Bravo to the two of them.

Anna ferrara ! Wished I could sing like julian.... never mind we can listen..... fabulous. 💞👍
Yes they were.
Sierra is such a sweet successor to Julie Andrews.
Lovely legato from both. Sierra goes a tad sharp on high notes when she puts intensity into the sound....I hope she will work to correct this. Julian a bit too
" refined" here, needs some element swagger and naughtiness!. But a wonderful performance from both.
An out of this world song sung by fantastic singers
Omg, what beautiful voices!!!
Absolutely wonderful! Sierra and Julian are magical!
I watch these two over and over so glad for whoever put them on.
Sierra Boggess .... a massive talent .....how she makes Carousel live again.....

their chemistry on stage is just perfection 👍👏👏👏
There is absolutely no chemistry.
Beautiful. Perfect song. I love these two together anyway and the sounds that John Wilson's orchestra can make are simply sublime.
These two fabulous vocalists sing so well together! They sing with passion and conviction.

Julian Ovenden is amazing. Love his rendition of "If I Loved You".
They are fabulous together!
What a gorgeous pair. I've seen her on stage twice. Amazing.
I know Julian Ovenden from BBC Foyle's War. I did not know he could sing, what an understatement!
These two are incredible they sound absolutely amazing,,!
One of my favorite love songs sung by two of my favorite singers. This is a treat. Thank you for uploading. :)
Sierra and Julian are sublime together, and this is a beautiful performance of a classic romantic song. xxx
Julian Ovenden is so incredibly talented. Why do we not see (or hear) more from him? After Bocelli, he's my favorite singer.
Her singing voice is out of this world, and unrivaled, and indescribable,
The beauty of her singing voice is outclassing
Everything about this is beautiful. And I love the wink from the conductor. It makes me miss my old orchestra days :)
Wonderful no other words.❤💙
How the singers and the orchestra and the song and and and and - divine!
Such a classic. Incredible music! Such emotion and sadness, two people who can't admit they love each other.
Oh my... I'm in love!!! These two are just the beez neez :D
The announcer may have remarked that Oklahoma! was respectful of rural life. That is so true and needs to be said now more than ever as the rural expanses of America empty out. Great singing here, really great.
