I just wanna say that I am 45 years old, grew up with Metallica and I've heard this song probably 10,000 times yet it NEVER fails to give me chills!! Masterpiece, pure and simple!!

I lost my wife of 23 years on June 7th this year, and I have times where I feel EXACTLY like the song describes, but then I think about what she and the others in my life would want, and I hold on. I will use this and other songs as an outlet for how I am feeling so I don't get overwhelmed.
This was a suicide note, i wrote it down and carried it around in my wallet for 30 years, somehow im still alive today because of Metallica and this song in particular.
I myself was in a dark place... just wanted to give up give in, and obviously I found a reason to move forward. I'm glad you made to the other side brother 🤟.

This song helped a lot of confused youth in the 80s come to grips and identify/understand their own feelings - when they realize they're not alone in how they feel. That was long before internet, social media, and instant access to online therapy and stuff. Mental health/illness was still very much a sore stigma.
Great reaction Lilly. Love this song. Like I posted in previous reaction, metal music is like that musical score in a movie - it really enhances the scene, or the challenge for the characters within, it helps connect with the audience by drawing them in, and really augments how powerfully moving the dialogue/lyrics are.
I think you would enjoy now seeing how badass these guys are when they perform live. I mean recording in a studio is something even mediocre dudes can do with the help of postproduction editing - but being able to do these stuff you've been hearing LIVE, and hold up the energy, not ever band can do that well, and these guys are a master class at it - a whole new appreciation.
I recommend "CREEPING DEATH" (from the same album as Fade To Black) 1991 Live in Moscow. That crowd was EPIC. the story of the concert was that the soviet Union was dissolving, and their iron grip of communism was finally collapsing, and Russians were allowed to truly be free and listen to westernized music and for the first time, American rock bands were allowed to go to Russia and perform for the people there. You can see how thirsty these people were to experience the freedoms we have in America and enjoy heavy metal music.

I was 14 when this album came out and going through some very dark times, this song saved me. Every word in the lyrics was what I was feeling but the final solo was so inspiring, so uplifting so impactful that it showed me that there was a little light within the darkness and there was hope... I'm 52 now and have had battled depression all my life yet this song is my life line...
Completely agree. The melody before the solo and solo itself is one of the few times that music has clearly spoken to my soul.
This was the culmination of the light / lamenting verses and the dark unspoken chorus, speeding up literally and emotionally through to the lyrical climax and release point... but rather than leaving the listener dark and genuinely suicidal, kirk sails in to save the day with one the premier solo sections of all time and you wouldn't dare interrupt that magic with feelings of darkness so the mood passes, but contented for the release. Very uplifting resolution that has saved so many people.
Compositionally this is elite A+ master class stuff.

I'm approaching almost the same age, and still remember when this song/album come out... Been part of my life since then.
I listened to this millions of times in my very turbulent and troubled childhood, when I hit my 30`s I was still a mess, one night I sat with a 9mm handgun in my hand in the dark listening to this song, ready to end it...somehow this song pulled me out of that head space and away from what I was about to do...16 years later and many stints in therapy i`m still here and still fighting to manage the noise in my head and the dark clouds that still roll in over my mind from time to time...

The "I was me, but now he's gone" line breaks me every time so it's always comforting to see someone else react emotionally too.
Sometimes trauma kills the person you once were and I genuinely think that the sadness is a type of mourning for that person
Unlike a lot of UA-camrs who react to songs, especially Metallica songs, you absolutely nail it with the analysis of the song and I think there’s something that needs to be said for that ability. I was shocked when I watched your reaction to “One” because a lot of people miss the narration of the music video and end up missing that crucial detail of the story and what the song’s about. And you did it again with this one…. Really sick! And try listening to Nothing Else Matters by them as well

The Call of Ktulu, Orion and Dyers Eve are all Metallica instrumentals that will move you without words.
Buckethead is a guitarist that has 300+albums of mostly guitar solos, Soothsayer is a great song to start with🤘🤪🤘
To Live is to Die, not Dyers Eve, although that song immediately comes afterward on the album and is another must-listen. 🤘

Still my all time favorite song even after 40 years since I first heard it. An all time classic and a true masterpiece.
"Death greats me warm, but now I will just say goodbye." I have always interpreted that line to be saying goodbye to Death, as in "not today death". But as a person who has experienced deep depression, this song was such an inspiration as a teen/young adult showing me I was not alone in feeling the way I did at times.
there is no "but" in there. it may change the meaning slightly.
I've always felt this part was intentionally ambiguous; it could go either way. The power is in your choice.

Metallica’s song intros and guitar solos are legendary. Kirk Hammet is a genius on the strings. You were absolutely right about feeling emotional during his solo. Pure magic
It's called the blues... the talking guitar that expresses emotions... a huge product of black musicians from the deep South in the 40's and 50's... artists like B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Leadbelly... Their playing inspired a wide array of musicians from Eric Clapton to Jeff Beck and Jimmy Hendrix... Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin... Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath... Michael Schenker of U.F.O. ... Angus Young of AC/DC.
These were the styles that Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) of Metallica brought to the table creatively... he was a huge Michael Schenker fan, who combines blues and classical music scales.
James Hetfield recalled feeling depressed after his favorite guitar amp was stolen on tour... Lars Ulrich (drums) and he talked a lot about death in 1984 when this album was made... and that was a theme on Metallica's 2nd album 'Ride the Lightning'... James was only about 22 when he wrote the lyrics to 'Fade to black'... He said he knew he had something special when he visited his then-gf at her house, and her sister was blasting 'Fade to black' on her stereo system.
James had lost his mom to cancer as a teenager, and he had a tough upbringing in a broken home... Tragically, he and Metallica would experience a real death when their bassist Cliff Burton was killed in 1986 while the band was touring Europe - a bus accident in Sweden...
Years later, Metallica was alleged to inspire suicides by the song... they replied that thousands of fans wrote to them how 'Fade to black' saved their lives.

To live is to die is the greatest eulogy ever performed. All of the instrumentals are great. They each hold a special place in music history, but that one in particular is so damned heavy emotionally.
To Live is to Die is probably the best, but Anesthesia/Pulling Teeth is just on a whole nother level because of what it is and what it could've become if it were finished. gives me goosebumps every time i hear it because it was all Cliff. and it was just a very small tease of his immense talent.

Eh, let's not just name every instrumental they have. Orion and S&R take you on a journey sure but they aren't super emotional. And anesthesia and ktulu is overrated.

I’m a fan of pretty much all their instrumentals but as you said, it’s more about the journey they take you on musically. “To Live is to Die” is truly the one that brings the most emotion. I think “My Friend of Misery” could’ve been in the same vein, had it been allowed to be an instrumental. That song’s interlude is gorgeous

In the lyrics yes he went through with it. In reality obviously, he did not. When I was In middle school back in the early 89s music like this was nearly banned due to a group in Washington D.C. known as the PMRC (parents music resource Center), Thankfully that did not happen. Music has this amazing power of empathy. You put on a song and hear an artist you look up to expressing just how you are feeling, you think well he got through it, I can too. I attempted suicide twice in middle school, I would have done it even more but this song in particular helped me hold on to hope so many days when I was ready to give up again. I always admire how they basically had a song where the chorus is just a guitar riff without any vocals.

This was me in my lowest moment. I always loved Metallica, loved this song, but hearing it and the lyrics at my lowest moment was like a new discovery. Emptiness is filling me was probably the most saturating words that could describe that state of suffering. It's an incredible song, and the music expresses the emotions associated when you share these feelings. The slight unburdening in sharing, but the stigma of sorrow persistently there. This was one of the songs that saved my life as a teen in high school . I wasnt a nerd but i wasnt popular either . But depression and anxiety wasnt a thing diagnosed much back then , I was extremely sad always for no good reason . Heavy Metal made me feel good like a rush of serotonin . Plus i could relate to the lyrics and FEEL the music
They are some of the best of their craft. The reason you can feel it is because they are so good and the music speaks to your soul. Words aren't needed, just convey story and reason. But it is the instruments and the musicians themselves that show true emotion.

Everyone has the first moment they ever heard Metallica. For me I was a child, I was at my mom's friends house being babysat. Her teenaged son was listening to a Metallica tape on his boombox in his room. I remember hearing Enter Sandman for the first time. I had chills. I had him replay it twice more. I was hooked. I was like 5 maybe 6 years old.
I am only 15 and I absolutely love the change of tempo and around 4 minutes is my absolute favourite part of this song
This song hits home for me bc I've struggled with the thought of suicide after my brother died I was overwhelmed with the feeling of guilt and to this day the void still hurts and there's so much pain anger and self hate inside
As other have said, this song got me through some tough times in the past. I first got into Metallica when I was 15 in 1988 (yes I'm getting old now haha) and a school friend introduced me to the "Master of Puppets" and "And Justice For All" albums. I was already a fan of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath as well as a few other rock and metal bands, but that was the first time I'd heard something with a harder edge and it led me to other heavier bands. First time I saw Metallica live was 1990 just after I'd turned 17 and it was such an amazing experience. You can't fault their 80's era. The first four albums are classics. I can highly recommend "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Battery", "Creeping Death", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "Blackened", "Harvester of Sorrow", "The Shortest Straw", "The Four Horsemen" and "Seek and Destroy" just to name a few classics after the ones you've already done. It's great to see a band from my youth over 30 years ago still managing to excite and captivate the younger generation these days. Keep up the wonderful reactions Lilly! :)
I saw a video recently, and it was a young girl saying 'who is the person when life hits you hard, the one person, you talk to, to make it better' and the video was young men saying 'no one' or 'I have no one' over and over again. It hit me because I felt the very same just before that happened, as men we bottle up emotions almost as its weakness to show them. Mettalica and there lyrics, from Justice for all, Ride the lightning and Master of Puppets (for me) helped me transition through that stage - and they deserve to be the legends of metal they are now for helping so many.
Please remember though, the did a song called whip lash with the lyrics 'Bang your head against the stage like you never did before.... make it ring, make it bleed, make it really sore' :D they haven't always been the golden lyrical poets your reacting too!
Crazy how the bass player Cliff Burton wrote this based upon the story of the same title. I think it was written by Earnest Hemingway. Awesome how many kids in the '80s, like myself identified with this song and are still alive today because of it.
Love this song. One of my favorite songs of metallica. But what i love about this song is the solo part. When i close my eyes to sleep while listening to the solo makes me imagine falling to the dark void abyss. This song actually saved me, one band/artists really understands what it's like in a dark realm.

You mentioned “light at the end of the tunnel” you should definitely check out No Leaf Clover by Metallica. It was part of a performance they did with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra on their album S&M. It’s a fantastic song. I am 48 years old. As gen-exer I can proudly say we have had the best music growing up. In my younger days whatever emotion I was feeling, there was always a METALLICA song to help me get through.
Dyers Eve, disposable heros and fight fire with fure are all great tracks to have a listen to ! All classic metallica.

I know this is an older reaction and I just stumbled by it. So, in the 80s, all I focused on was the guitar because I was learning and playing. I had the tab book for this album and I was learning to play this song. I knew the song was dark, but I loved the music. I learned to play the song pretty well. I have to honestly admit that your reaction made me discover over 30 years later that the melodies had the purpose you describe. I just never paid attention to it. Thank you.

I started playing guitar in grade 3. I taught myself how to play it, mainly with metallica songs. I didn't read music, I played by ear, and "fade to black's" intro melody use the confuse the heck out of me as a kid lrearning to play it. I was rhythms and my cousine was lead guitar and i could never not fuck up............love this song
Hey Lilly, love getting to see someone experience Metallica for the first time and it's clear you're perceptive and intelligent. Two I would HIGHLY recommend would be Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and if you want to see what these guys were like at their absolute peak, go watch The Thing That Should Not Be (live in Seattle '89).
The title track is a must listen, as well as the whole album! This is a flawless masterpiece!

This is by far one of my all time fave Metallica songs cuz of how emotionally raw and on point and masterfully composed the entire song is and the music driving it all together just beautiful and still gets me every time even after decades of listening and being a fan of Metallica and metal as a whole 🤘❤️

This is such an epic reaction. You got it right about the song. James wrote this after their equipment was stolen out of their touring van. One item in particular James' guitar that his mother had given him was stolen. Very depressed he wrote this song, and now it is one of the most legendary songs Metallica has. I have battled severe suicidal thoughts after fighting against depression for 15 years (I still suffer from depression though) and I really thought that nothing could help me or that nothing would have a major impact on me. But after hearing this song, it was like a light snapped on in my mind and I felt like someone was talking to me like: ''I know how you feel''. Taking me away from that ''mental cliff'' you're about to jump down from. That's something you never forget. Now, this song leaves me in tears when I hear this.
