  • Actress Glenn Close has taken on a new role - hoping to help de-stigmatize mental illness. That's because mental illness runs in her own family. (Her nephew, Calen, has schizophrenia; and her sister Jessie, after a lifetime of struggles, has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.) Glenn and Jessie have since started a foundation, Bring Change to Mind, to encourage communication around mental health. Tracy Smith reports.

"If I had had a heart operation . . ." So very true! People respond completely differently to physical vs. mental illness.

Apart from being one of the greatest performers I have seen acting, in my lifetime, I salute you Glenn Close for trying to bring acceptance and maybe a little understanding plus respect, for people with these terrible illnesses, fighting bravely to handle themselves ......

I think she is a brilliant actress♡ haha i still use that phrase when anyone doesnt get back to me, "I'm not going to ignored Dan" lol. Of course, most probably don't realize wtf I'm referring to. I applaud Glenn for her honesty♡♡♡ my new hero for speaking out!

I've seen the movie too many times not to know that creative expression Close gave about being ignored. Fabulous movie ...

I always remember her as Cruella De Vil one of her greatest roles ever, I glad she advocate for mental illness.

Love Close and first saw her on Broadway in the hit show "Barnum" in the early 80s, beautiful singing voice, very versatile talented actress and great all around decent human being with a heart of gold and humanitarian! And hope she wins the Oscar for "The Wife" which was so close to my own life married to my late husband, a malignant Narcissistic real Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde sociopath/psychopath for 42 years! My own late father was the same. My older brother suffered from schizophrenia and was an alcoholic and my middle daughter had ADHD like her father and was Bi Polar got into heroin and suffered a cardiac arrest and went into a coma and became brain injured for life so I've been surrounded with this my whole life. We had our daughter in therapy and rehabs and nothing seemed to help, unfortunately. My husband dropped dead of a heart attack at age 66 just four years ago and when I went to see that movie with a friend of mine, I couldn't believe how close, "The Wife' was to my own life minus the Nobel Prize. Agree with Patrick Kennedy on mental health parity in his new book out now, who also suffers from Bi Polar There's hardly a family around the world that hasn't been touched by it and it's definitely epidemic! Thanks for sharing...glad to see her sister and family have gotten the help they need. The therapists are doing all they can, there are good ones and ones who aren't so good just look for the one who is right for you.

I'm prepared to believe most people have some form of mental illness. An affliction painful to many.
