  • James "Mike" Thomas demonstrates traditional charcoal making the Grenadian way. On Grenada, many still cook with charcoal made from hardwood, often buying or making charcoal as they clear land for farming. Charcoal pits are created and wood is buried, then burned slowly until converted to coals, which are then quenched and stored for cooking. Charcoal is sometimes called "biochar." Whatever you call it, it's good for cooking oildown!

This is not something for young people. It takes years of practice. The older the person doing it is the more talented they are.

No age limit to any talent huh? You see alot of elderly gymnasts? How about 90 year old mountain climbers, basketball players, track stars or skiers?

I wonder if the longer process makes the wood stronger, this burning longer?

Interesting way of making charcoal.. I feel like this was an incredible amount of work and took a long time though... there are a lot of ways to make it pretty simply, including covering a pile of wood in mud and let it burn for a few hours before plugging up the air holes. That only takes like 6 hours. This took several days. It’s always interesting seeing it done if different ways though.

More wood more time it takes.
And the longer it takes the better d quality of the charcoal,it last longer for kitchen purpose.🤗

Couldn’t u use steel sheet metal with holes punched into it to line between the soil and wood. Seems like it’d cut the work in half.
