I live in a place where charcoal is not needed for cooking. But on our farm we use large kilns to make charcoal for biochar. We add our crushed charcoal to the compost, and then to our gardens to increase the fertility of the soil. We use pruingings and "waste" wood that would otherwise become a fire hazard to improve our soils.
Your two barrel system is simple, and will make large amounts of charcoal, both for cooking and for soil improvement.
Thank you for sharing your idea.

Raw Biochar should be used in the soil for sequestration of Carbon Dioxide, and to reduce Gas Emissions. Charged Biichar is used for feeding nutrients to plants, and Micro-organisms to Soil, which further feed nutrients to plant roots , taken from deeper soil profiles.we need to know logic.

Actually charcoal has higher magnetic properties and attracts more of eth earth's magnetosphere which is why it improves soil. Terra preta.

I made many more holes in the bottom but the burn went too fast, 3/4 hour, and when I opened it there was almost no charcoal - it had all burned up. This time I will reduce the gap at the bottom to 1 inch.
The bamboo I used was 3 inch diameter, but this time I will go 1-2 inches as you did.
Will let you know the results.

Fire started at the bottom will burn everything to ash. When lit from the top air is being drawn in from the bottom. As the flame moves down the barrel it consumes all of the oxygen and deprives the partially burnt wood above it of oxygen and prevents it from burning . The heat cooks it (pyrolizes it) in the absence of oxygen. The flames at the top of the barrel is from woodgas being driven out of the pyrolizing wood. The space between the barrels provides oxygen for this "afterburner". The process continues until the fire column reaches the bottom. It must be sealed off right away or the fire will burn back upward and burn the charcoal to ash.

Sir a small but important suggestion... please put the hot barrel on a few bricks instead of directly on ground... in vedic scriptures it is said to hurt mother earth if anything (including a small burning candle/diya) is kept directly on earth... perhaps to save any microbes below.... so PLEASE AVOID KEEPING A HOT BURNING VESSEL DIRECTLY ON EARTH 🙏🏼👍🙏🏽

Different of time to burn of course.
I make CHAR-CLOTH to be used with a Ferro Rod, or Magnifying Glass to start a camp fire. Use only Cotton for that & do it in a small tin, as soon as the smoke stops coming out the small hole 1/4" in the top, pot a bolt in to choke off the oxygen.
Take away from the fire & let it cool down & then remove from the tin.

You can make charcoal from any tree and agricultural waste - Hardwood trees (beech, birch, hard maple, hickory, oak etc.) , bamboo tree, sawdust, rice husks, palm kernels, coconut shells, date palm leaves/stems, cotton stalk, sugarcane bagasse - the list is endless. The available raw material in each country will determine the main source.

No. Bioçhar from same Biomass is thermally decomposed with less or no Air , with more Carbon, whereas Charcoal is made in open kiln or in open burning, with less pores and surface Area, and more volatile matter. Biochar can be used for Carbon Sequestration and to reduce Gas Emissions.

Bamboo charcoal is light, naturally. Just use hard denser wood if you want for cooking or forging and heat lasts longer. Bamboo charcoal is porous and smaller that's better in filtering. Use it for cooking as done in pun2 but will disintegrate faster than denser charcoals.

If you burn in a closed drum with a removable lid with lock ring and attach black metal pipe , you can extract crude oil to refine to diesel and gas, you also get wood gas that can be stored in big low pressure bag to be burned in gas burner stove for cooking and still have high quality charcoal afterwards. Much valuable byproduct wad wasted with is method!
