- Here's a simple walkthrough showing how to replace your starter. Thankfully this is a simple job that anyone can accomplish with simple hand tools. Here's the starter I purchased for my 2010 Corolla S. Hopefully this helps you out.

Wouldn't by removing the ground as soon as you touch something metal the wrench act as a ground since your engine is grounded out and the body is grounded out and everything else is grounded out as soon as you touch your wrench from a positive to the body it grounds........ remove the positive side
Yes you are correct! Remove the power (battery) starting with the negative (black) terminal, and positive (red) second. The reverse is true for hooking it back up, positive (red) first and negative (black) second . I'll pin this since I listed it incorrectly in my video, thank you.
@@ShareXP well thank you! Glad I could be of assistance! Thanks for the video. Been working on cars since I was a kid, started with my grandpa.. and the UA-cam algorithm brought me back to the basics today and I realized I couldn't remember which one to remove first haha
@@DuvalDashCamsI worked on my cars too I always remove negative and it helps no issues so far.
Wrong. To complete any circuit the ground would have to be connected to the battery.
@briankincade Ah, so I am right in just removing one terminal?
This video was a HUUGE help. Thank you.
Testimonial on a 2011.
Eff'd around and found out you need the ratcheting wrench ShareXP said you need. Wasted a decent amount of time there. Buy it when you buy the starter. Not in 15 mins but less than an hour for a complete novice being lead by an 80 yr old who'd done these things before.
Locating the top bolt was not easy, blind maybe, but mine was not exposed like the video. It had a steel shield the limited my access to the bolt. Prob had the width of my fat finger to fit the ratcheting wrench and rotate it out. It was blocked by the shield about halfway through removing it. So I removed the bottom and pulled from underneath to help out the top.
The top bolt 14mm came out millimeter turns at a time, holding the bolt so it would rotate. It was slow and decently difficult to get on there, but the ratcheting is a life saver. I removed the air intake piece to free up some room. I didn't finish the job on top, I ran out of room., the bolt is too long, so I moved to the bottom. Bottom matching 14mm bolt could fit the socket wrench, but I needed a ton of torque, it was stuck/tight. Attached the retaining pin, the hole on the opposite end of a huge crescent wrench and torqued it out. Fully removed the bottom and shifted back to the top 14mm bolt. The old man was helping underneath the car, floor jacked w a stand. I finished rotating the top, still quite slowly, but eventually he had the starter in his hands. The top bolt still in place, pulled the starter out of it. We detached the wire under the cap quite easily and removed the 12mm nut w a sachet and removed the starter. Installing it I got under the car and had help from top to line it up/hold it and get the top bolt in the right place while I installed the bottom bolt about half way or more, traded places, worked on the top, old man underneath, tiny turn at a time again w the ratchet, holding the bolt so it would turn. He helped under from under the car, holding it and such. Finished the bottom and top, he installed the 12mm nut and fit the wire pretty easily. Done. The hardest part was the top 14mm, using the godsend ratcheting wrench. Also, two people is easier than one. Hope this helps.
This video was a HUUGE help. Thank you
Doing my gfs starter in the next 20 min. watched this video 4 times before this project and I’m confident with your instructions brother! Wish me luck lol
You got it.
Yeah it took me 2 hours 😂 the top bolt really pissed me off tbh. I had to go in at so many different angles
@@daeskimofolol 15min turns into a 2 hour job happen to me with my other car 30 min job turned into 4 hours
it happens lol i was so fucking done with that replacement@@dontworry7113
Thank you for your video. It allowed two old farts (77 and 80 years old) to change a starter. The key was the ratcheting wrench. Great advice!!
Glad it helped!
Im 34 and i consider myself an old fart
That does look simpler said than done, but I like that as a novice to starters, I can see what I'm looking at, due to your video. Thanks.
You bet!
If you don't have a ratcheting wrench but are willing to do a little more work, you can take out the transmission dipstick tube (two 12 mm bolts in two brackets) and fit a regular ratchet in to get the top bolt. Also allows you to torque it to spec once you're done if you're super specific like me ;)
Great video!
Thank you for the extra tips.
I have a manual so there's no sick for me! I was very happy about this! Lol
Thank you so much changed mine and ive never done this before great video
Thanks for the video.
Great video; thanks for posting !!!
Glad it helped!
thanks bro for your video
Thanks for sharing!
Excelente vídeo, thank you!
Great video buddy. Thank you
Glad it helped!
Thanks
I think that the starter is in a completely different place on a standard transmission. Nothing looks familiar.
What year is your car? My car is a 2009 corolla.
I’m wondering if it’s a three terminal starter solenoid or one starter terminal?
If I over tighten the brass with the nut. It will break right? Looking at other videos. I feel like I over tighten it but I should b good if it didn’t break off right??
Awesome
Remove the whole battery its 2 min and gives alot more room especially for light
Good tisher
I just did and I am facing issue. The engine starts without the key turning all the way
Im 8hours I’m in this 100° weather, I have tried 4 times and nothing
Four different starters? I'd say your problem might be elsewhere.
I've done a few... don't know why im here..lol..you got to remove the transmission dipstick tho... sorry
Would have nice to know what engine upfront.
15 minutes my ass. Took me hours trying to get my hands in to get that top bolt. The jerk.
But i still have a grinding noise on the first start after its sat for a bit. I've seen people say it's vvti related? Is it something to worry about?
Hah, well I haven't had anyone else mention it yet. Might have to upload a video and get some feedback.
yeah well 15 bloody minutes if you can get the bottom bolt undone....NOT
The ratcheting wrench didn't break it loose for you?
WD-40 buddy
@@ShareXP no for me just hard to get to. Looked at. Another video suggested pulling radiator fan, 2 10mm bolts Had I gone that route first yep could’ve whipped through it. I realize amongst the mechanic Illuminati there’s a competitive “let’s see who can get the job done with the least amount of extras removed crowd”. Home handyman doesn’t need to prove that so much.
That's fair, yeah I buy a lot of single use tools to get stuff out in one swoop. Thankfully this part is pretty accessible.
i don’t enjoy a can of worms with extra parts in the equation. thanks for the straight forward video and explanation
You should have totally started the vhehicle.
I did, it's just a quiet car. 👍
@@ShareXP hey so i can remove the starter from the top of a 2013 corolla le i looked and it looks like i can only remove it from the bottom
splendid 🙂✌️️️!!! Do not waste your time = Promo'SM!!!
Hah, thank you!
Yeah well it would HELP if you actually replaced it!
Ant no damn 12mm mane
Well shoot, what is it brother?
The OEM starter has a 12mm nut on the positive terminal, some aftermarket starters (I got a Duralast reman from AutoZone) have 13 mm nuts on the positive terminal.
Thanks for the clarification!
