I had 3 weeks with him in '69, then we left California for the east coast.I was 13. He was such a good man, taught me more in that 3 weeks than I learned from another teacher in 3 months.
Pass was otherworldly ... my folks saw him with Peterson, Pederson and Grappelli @ Ronnie Scotts here in London a few times in the 70s, plus all solo and with various combos... we're seeing Bireli Lagrene solo in Oct
It realy helped me a lot the day I stopped playing standard chords and started to combine notes by their functionality to make my own ones.Great lesson and great playing as well, thanks.
The greatest are the most modest. Hats off Mr. Blues, rock, shred-head metal man, funk, soul man Ha! that just cut me up! love this and appreciated. Al from Uk.
How those guys do those basslines with the chord melodies, improvised...just mind blowing to me. That style is just completely alien to me as a blues/rock/shred guy
I learned one piece that somebody else wrote in the Joe Pass style long ago, but it was very complex and I barely remember more than a few bars now. I never heard the piece though, so I doubt I ever had the right swing. Great player though! It's awesome that you like to branch out like this.🥰😊
Great stuff, thanks for the effort. The chord exercise is interesting--in my limited jazz guitar playing experience, a chromatic movement in a chord is often all that's happening in the song itself. Stone Temple Pilots do this in rock, too--'Plush' and "Interstate Love Song' come to mind.
Pat Martino was my gateway drug. It interested me how out there he was by the way he spoke, yet you were completely aware of what he was saying. Since then i havent been able to put down the 7th chords. From Joe im going to say Virtuoso. Alas, im a mere metalhead. (That interjects 7th chords)
Tasty Brew tonite, thankyou. I've just dis-entangled my fingers after the warm-up exercise beginning with the F#maj7 . I didn't Pass the test, but I'm inspired now!!
He also played with Niels Henning Oersted Pedersen, Eberhard Weber and Art Van Damme. On Art Van Damme's recorings in Germany. Where he did show some another comping style, and also used his very fast single lines.
one of the best things the Joe pass left were ""thinking chord" theory..where you are playing in one chord progression and mentally ,substitute that chord with other chords and improvise over it.
i saw joe pass in '83 or '84 at ronnie scotts.i was about 21 i spoke with him after the gig i had my strat with me i showed him what i was into i was kinda getting into jazzy chords and he said ''yeah you got good timing and rythm'' and he gave me his autograph and he wrote ''keep on picking'' i kept thaat in my case for years but my guitar got stolen out the back of my car in 2003 and i lost it. anyay there you go .story eh!

And have fun seeing Bireli Lagrene.
@elizabethanderson2968 Bireli is a killer, too. I hope you'll enjoy the show.
I’ve been listening to Joe Pass since watching this video earlier today. Thanks very much for posting your video, it was very helpful.
It realy helped me a lot the day I stopped playing standard chords and started to combine notes by their functionality to make my own ones.Great lesson and great playing as well, thanks.
I remember the old Guitar World and Guitar for the practicing Musician articles. Killer stuff!
Guitar for the practicing Musician was my favorite guitar mag!
@@aylbdrmadison1051 Yeah, they were really great! I still have all of my copies.
love this! Great Content as always! Thank you
One of the most interesting/difficult/inspiring lessons. I'm taking a deep breath and diving in. Thanks.
17:25 Joe Pass One Man Walking Bass & Guitar by David! So awesome!

Thx Dave, awesome lesson...!!!!
Thank you, very illuminating, Joe Pass was a true master
Absolutely awesome have a wonderful weekend ❤😊
We have to thank Joe forever for his lessons IMHO! 👏
I'm a good rock player, but I'm sure going to work on these jazz chords. All new guitar knowledge always pays off in the songwriting.
I attended a free Joe Pass clinic in the Mission District in '91 or so. He really goofed on three chord rock and was quite humorous.
Fantastic, thank you so much for this lesson.

I used to buy his albums on the Pablo label . Awesome
Phantastic lesson.. thx!
Mate you are doing a great job. Really enjoying this video.

Nice Work! WooF!!🐶🐶
Awesome tutorial!!!
Man, you are doing my favorite artist joe pass, frank zappa, prince, steve vai.
Nice!
Go to: Fingering exercise - 4:45,
Cross barring - 9:05,
Common tone chord progressions 1-6-2-5 - 11:56
Walking bass - 17:26.

I always called him Uncle Joe because he reminded me of an uncle I had, only he played an accordion...LOL
Try "Jazz Comping For Fingerstyle Guitar" (Mel Bay Pub), It will give you an entry into Joe's style. It's one of Bill Bay's favorite books.
!!!!Elect Joe Pass!!!!
Elect Django!
Hi, What LP Standard are you playing? Are the Pups stock? Thank you for your cool videos.
Yo!! You should do Chords of Matchbox 20. Kyle Cook went to AIM about the same time you did.
