      Yeah when I was in school we ran Old Ford HighBoys and idi diesels, some of the more unfortunate guys drove square body Chevrolets haha. My senior year I bought an ‘84 F250 4x4 with a 6.9 and a 4spd and that was one sharp truck, but, thanks to a blown head gasket I drove my uncles 93 F250 4x4 that had a ZF5 and a 7.3 Turbo. I remember picking my buddy up on the way to school and some dude was driving slow as hell up a pretty long, steep hill so I went to fourth gear and passed him “on the hill” and my buddy looked at me with his eyes wide open and said “Damn this thing picks UP speed on a hill!!”... we had a pretty good laugh cause there was NO passing anybody when going up a hill with the old 6.9 hahaha. The P-Pump 12 valves came out in 94 but around here people didn’t really start juicing them up till around ‘99 and 2000, those P-Pump trucks were one hell of a game changer

    I think the fact that the old Cummins engines were so unstressed is one of the reasons they lasted so long. My Dad had a 1992 Ram 3500 with the Cummins and a 5 speed. We ran a 40' gooseneck and it never failed to pull what we needed it to. I also would get 22 mpg running empty. We sold it with over 450,000 miles and as far as I know it's still going strong. The only complaints are the truck was very noisy with rough suspension. It also rusted pretty bad

    • @FishFind3000
      @FishFind3000 6 років тому +2

      Under stressed is the best. I’ve got a 2000 bmw 323i, 2.5l inline 6 gas engine ~172hp ~189tq . It’s 100 miles away from 249K and it’s an 5 speed auto. Original engine and tranny, no rebuilds. It’s slow but it just keeps ticking.

    • @AndrewBrowner
      @AndrewBrowner 3 роки тому +3

      well i mean its a trade off between engine life and power, at 145hp itll do 1million miles, at 300hp it might do 600k miles, at 500hp it might do 250k miles, all depends alot on what supporting mods go with the upgrade and how much the truck is thrashed, it shouldnt blow up a month down the road though unless something was really messed up on install

    • @JJZBULLITT109
      @JJZBULLITT109 6 років тому +4

      Valve spring install is very straight forward. The gsk is a little trickier, one because in situ it can be a bit like playing operation with the springs and shims. A dixie cup with the bottom cut out, a hook and magnet make that much safer from dropping anything into the pump. Setting up the spring preload is up to you. Some guys go by clicks, others (like me) use a caliper.

    Clutches are not rated in HP, not sure why you're saying that. HP doesn't slip clutches, TQ does. HP is just a mathematical representation of work done over time utilizing torque as the base reference.

    • @lanceroark6386
      @lanceroark6386 6 років тому +7

      I was looking at injectors one day, and I realized that HP is a synonym for fuel consumption. The only rating that matters is TQ; while efficiency is truly measured in a TQ to Fuel Consumption ratio; but people are too stupid and easily confused to understand that. I mean, we could dispense with the sensationalism that sells stuff to be accurate, but who among us wants to risk lower sales? I mean, sensationalism has already sold America into debt, why stop now?

    • @powerstroke0459
      @powerstroke0459 6 років тому +2

      I was told by an old timer that it takes 4 gasoline horsepower to make 1 diesel horsepower based on the torque difference it makes sense but I guess it was an over simplification

    • @chris6200
      @chris6200 6 років тому +2

      They are also rated for rpm with the max rpm and torque you know what the max horsepower is. So they do have a max hp rating as well as torque.

    • @Slider68
      @Slider68 6 років тому +2

      Boanerges, torque is not the only rating that matters. HP is a measure of how quickly work can get done. Think of it as a measure of how quickly you can drive an amount of weight up a hill. Torque is a measure of twisting force. Gearing can take any torque and convert it to any other torque if you slow or speed up the rotation to maintain the same amount of power (which is torque x rpm). As long as you have the right gearing, maximum HP is what you need to haul a heavy trailer up a mountain at the highest speed and it is also what you need for quickest acceleration. Engine efficiency is also measured by fuel rate per
      HP not torque. Torque without knowing the rpm is of little value but HP on its own tells you how quickly you can get work done, accelerate, etc. (as long as you have the gears to put it to use).

    • @powerstroke0459
      @powerstroke0459 6 років тому +2

    I have owned a 96 Dodge 2500, and a 99 Dodge 3500 dually. I currently own an 04 Chevy 2500 Duramax and a 99 Ford F350 drw 7.3 Powerstroke. My Dodges got 18-23mpg hwy, 15-17 mpg freeway, and around 16 in town. Stock, no mods. Power SUCKED. Towing my gooseneck over Snowqualmie or Lookout was a real chore in the Dodges. Bought a 99 F350 dually powerstroke, already modded to 360hp or so. 55mph up snowqualmie with gooseneck. Sold the Dodges rather than dump money in to get a good tow rig.
    My next project is an 88 Ford f350 srw 4 door. Want to ditch the 6.9 and put a 12 valve modded to 300hp or so in. Hunting truck.
    In my experience, Dodge fit and finish is awful to awfuk. Everything rattles and clanks when you shut a door. Interiors feel cheap. Seams and seals suck. Gappy and just not well done. I like the big rig look of the 90's dodges, but the lack of crew cab and the fit and finish, probly wont ever own one again.
    The Duramax? Would never buy one again. Superb power, great economy, superb fit and finish; but...BUT...The tranny is a financial meltdown to replace, and the Duramax electrical problems are a nightmare. Too bad, because it is a superb truck.
    Moral of the story, I will stick to Ford and just put a cummins in the hunting trucks. I really do love the 7.3 Powerstroke. Love the sound of a Cummins 12 valve too. Music for the soul.

I certainly don't want to wreck the old gal. I was lucky enough to even get it. There not easy to come by in Canada. So I'd like to keep it as long as I can. Followed immediately by a circle-jerk which would be held a safe distance away from the trucks, should one of them bust prematurely, strike a truck, and dent the body on it. You'd know it was all over when you heard all of their transmissions slip in unison as they went out seeking another mall parking lot to crawl around.

    Thanks for the excellent video! I have used two of those clutches from South Bend and they are a bit stiff on the pedal especially for all the city driving I do. If you drop down to the 400 hp clutch it's a softer and more stock like pedal. I'm also curious what was the boost numbers you needed to achieve that horsepower/torque level. I've had my share of blown head gaskets on stock turbos and head studs. I've blown 2 head gaskets at 40 PSI on stock head bolts and two at 40 PSI with head studs. 17* timing. Needless to say I made some upgrades. 🙂

      PowerDrivenDiesel PowerDrivenDiesel sweet. Thanks. There is not much high end info online for 4bts that I found. Most just say to put the 6bt turbo on but that ruins low end power. I have been kicking around the idea of a sxe 200 line for a factory replacement then was thinking about a sxe 300 something for the big one.
      Still kind of unsure though because I'm building an over lander which has to get good mileage while still making power to tow and off-road (and keep weight down other wise id go 6bt).

    Interesting video. Just a coup;le of questions. What do you lose in the conversion? Increased Horse Power doesn't come free.Injection timing, has this been set up on an apparatus similar in concept to a Hartridge machine? Original Injector timing has been set to gain max burning of fuel at the moment of injection. Plus all injectors are bench tested and pre-set, equi spray patterns verified and formation of sprays checked inc delivery pressure to each injector.Spray patterns checked and delivery valve closure verified for efficiency and leakage.That plus the spray pattern of the injector determines the efficient generation of power from the cylinder. If the injection phase is early, then the flame travel / ignition will be early which immediately has a slowing effect on the piston travel. With all that in mind, what exactly has been lost, in able to gain the figures which are quoted? I am not slagging it off, just curious.The engine has been rated at a Horse Power for given RPM, increasing the RPM, unless original dyno info is available does not necessarily mean an increase in Brake Horsepower.. Again, I am just curious.
