ABBA really gifted us with incredible pop melodies and gorgeous harmonies. The Swedes are well known in the music industry for being masterful pop songwriters and ABBA certainly had a huge part to play on that world wide. The harmonies in this and the interesting song structure really give this slower paced song a lift. For a faster song - definitely Voulez-Vous or Gimme Gimme Gimme! Abs, thank you for giving the older music a chance 😊
It was more adult prog-pop music at its best .There was a recent documentary on pop music where one of its chapter was titled 'the Stockholm syndrome" analyzing how Abba and Scandi pop influenced the whole scene decades later with the likes of Denize Pop and Max Martin's songwritting/studio team.A lady vocalist that represented them, talked a while about how they studied the exceptional constructive complexity of 'The name of the game' also praising it, an influential example for their working proccess and also refered to Frida's and Agnetha's vocal specialty.
how nice to see you next to the weekend with an extraordinary song by ABBA, which has many peculiarities: 1) I think it's the first in which each of the girls sings a verse as lead voice 2) the official video was recorded at Agnetha and Björn's home, because Agnetha was very late in her second pregnancy (that's why maybe she's sitting and cared for in the picture) 3) "The name of the game" was released in October 1977, a month before "ABBA The Album" and the movie "ABBA The Movie" It was a bold gamble from ABBA, it opened their horizons and spread beyond pop. I think that "The name of the game" (1977) have some vibs of influences of BEATLES songs like "Penny Lane" (1967) curiosly, "The name of the game" was #1 only in UK (4 weeks), replaced in #1 for "Mull of Kintyre" by Paul McCartney (ex BEATLES member) "The name of the game" (1977) is in my opinion a masterpiece (10pts) one of the Seven Wonders of ABBA (in chronological order): Waterloo S.O.S Dancing Queen The name of the game Chiquitita The winner takes it all Don't shut me down You have fantastic songs in "The Album" to react, ABBA's most versatily (remember that you first react "Take a chance on me") "Thank you for the music" (hymn) "Eagle" open track of almost 6 minutes "Move on" (mystical) or "Hole in your soul" (rock) or I'm a marionette (dramatic) I hope to see you in more ABBA videos A big hug from Buenos Aires, Argentina
Great with two generations reacting together! I think this is a masterpiece, musically as well as vocally. I love their voices individually and combined. Frida's parts in this song are so beautiful. Normally, not least their voices are praised, but I understand that aproaches to singing have changed a lot since ABBA's heydays.
This song brings back good memories. In the mid 70s my Dad bought a new music centre and it came with two micro-phones. So Sunday afternoons as a family we would sing along like early Karaoke style to Abba songs. My Dad was a huge Abba fan, he had all their albums. Abba albums had the lyrics printed on the record sleeve, good times....
Well thanks for the ABBA. The thing about ABBA is they recorded so many genre. Pop, ballads, reggae, disco, show tunes, glitter even a tango. And they were all perfectionist so it wasn't released till it was perfect. They started off with upbeat pop songs and never stopped expanding and exploring. Also the backstory of their marriages and divorces are played out musically too. So make your dad happy and keep checking them out. He's probably had a crush on Agnetha "blond" since he was a kid, I know I have. Thanks again.
This is the absolute best ABBA-song (according to me), but it is a little complex to get it in the first impression. Thank you for this! Gimme, gimme, gimme is very popular here now for the youngsters
That's Abba in a more sophisticated creation. They had embarked from their European pop roots of the ear candy ARRIVAL era and went more mature, with sounds that were influenced by the 'laid back California sound of the day'.Whole album sounds more American and moves to progressive pop/rock with great lyrics and dealt adult subjects. It's not an easy catchy tune. It's a grower and a majestic super complicated project with many hooks.I suspect Gimme,Gimme,Gimme would be the next irresistable catcher for Abbie's ears.Neverthless,Thanx a lot for Abba.
ABBA were, and for that matter still are music pioneering legends considering even in their older years they've done a whole new album and put together an amazing concert experience. It is therefore only justice served they continue to be introduced to younger viewers.
I heard this when I was 10 years old. When I was in my mid to late teens I wouldn't listen to ABBA at all (mainly rap/rock music) , but now, whenever I hear a song, it fills me with joy... feels like part of my dna.
Great reaction, so an analytical daughter, but so honest. By my first hearing 77 I was so confused. In the right mood and to the right time the music (bridges) and lyrics are so fascinated - an eternal masterpiece. If you want react to an uptempo take care and choose a long version of Gimme, Gimme (instrumental middle part, it's worth it) or Summer Night City (Intro banger), not the short 3' official video/radio versions; the official video of Voulez Vous is good. If you want rock take the 2 song package Does Your Mother Know+Hole In Your Soul from Wembley 1979 (Gimme+Summer are here live in long versions) or Why Did To Have Be Me from Australia 1977 (official video from ABBA The Movie). Then you could recognise that ABBA is not only the well-known pop band, all four were on stage full energy and passion. Finally the only things that matters you have fun. All the best!!!
