- Today we dive into legendary English synth band Depeche Mode. "Everything Counts" is a song off their third studio album Construction Time Again released in August 1983. It was the first DM album to feature Alan Wilder as a member!
What Do Ya'll Think ?!

I don't care how many years goes by, this song is STILL so damn good!
I agree with you buddy, especially the 101 live version!. Regards, from Buenos Aires!
This isn't a song I choose to listen to much anymore, but listening to it for the first time through someone else's ears... DM just continues to floor me. They really are their own entity 💕
The icons of 1980ies British New Wave sound - I LOVE them and their music!
I remember that i had bought the whole album back then cause i couldn't find the 7 inch.1983 was the peak for synth bands and synth pop music.A real ' synth orgasm' that year full of imaginative creativity. Vince Clarke wasn't anymore in the band(he had left before their 2nd album release) and their music direction started turning darker and their sound kind of more 'industrial'.Then lyrics went more critical and dealed with issues more close to social awareness. That single was a very good production, despite them being so young but were such talented guys and 'professional' musicians and songwritters. It still sounds fresh,no outdated at all.For one more time I enjoyed your reaction.BTW the instrument you were both wondering about it, is a melodica.I know cause i had one as a kid..
Wow, so it was a melodica 😎 great insight as always Christiano 😎 1983 was a Fab year for music indeed, seems like every year in the 80's had it's own legendary classic tunes
Saw DM three times live and each time their last encore was this song so I was always bummed to hear it start even though I love it!
Some of the best techno goes unnoticed. Kids these days have no idea. DM was on top of the pile.
Kids that are into music because the music is coming from talented musicians. Kids that listen to pop top 20 and don’t care about music enough to listen to something not on pop radio have no idea but they also probably aren’t the types that would like DM. I was 13 when people are people hit MTV. I have been a big DM fan since. My daughter is 28 and plays several instruments and loves experimenting with sounds and pushing the envelope. She loves DM probably more than I do. I was three months pregnant with her when I saw them in Dallas in 93 on devotional tour. She jokes that she loves them because I was on the fifth row floor while pregnant and it was her “first” concert.
What a nice melody and excellent production for 1983!I apreciate DM more now than at the time.Great orchestration, sophisticated lyrics ,fantastic arrangements, beautiful backing vocals, and they used a whole lot of instruments to 'build' this ...and hey,...they were so young. The song stood the test of time and for me it's definately the best one of the album.Since your reaction video,it has stuck in my mind.
This is definitely my favourite song from their early stuff, I always thought the lyrics could be about the music industry “grabbing hands” etc
'grabbing hands' yeah,it was all about corruption and greediness in every field, from governers to music industry.Criticizes every manipulative, demagogic person and system.
Yeah, The Jhews.
Good call Abbie… many Duran fans are Depeche fans and vice versa. Both are legends to me; both in RRHOF. Different vibes but a lot of connective tissue. Duran played in the sunshine of pop where Depeche played in the shadows of pop… but it’s all pop!
I agree
Wow such fine discription! Just if i may add my estimation that it was all pop but also blended with thoughtful art, inspiration and great hard work.
@@christianoazzuro6711 totally agree. Both bands are very artistic and clever songwriters. Both wrote songs that were on the surface very catchy and accessible but if you dig underneath they do some super interesting things; and I think that’s what has given them both such longevity. They both bent the arc of popular music in their direction. Maybe by accident. Maybe by design. Both are brilliant either way.
Fab description Bittersweet Machines 😎 Cheers from Dallas 😎 absolutely the best of Pop !
Yep. I’m 53. Loved Duran Duran first and fell in love with DM shortly after!
depeche mode es la banda de mi vida y todo cuenta la canción de mi vida un saludo desde buenos aires argentina
the song that started my new wave journey lol
Love this song!
We wore this out at school.
The Eurythmics, Yaz, soft cell, Heaven 17 so many good synth bands. And yes, Duran Duran.
Good call. My all-time favorite DM song.
Devoted since 1983!
Damn, I’m old.. I remember talking about this being an old school jam in 1997, at the stoner poker game in Houston.. And everyone was like… “who’s this?!”..
Cash me out, please..
❤️❤️❤️D🌹M❤️❤️❤️
It's crazy to me how REALLY young they look! I really like this song. Super catchy, great instrumental, deep message and quintessentially 80s! QUINTessentially! Ha ha. 🤣
Niiice 😎 that was my nickname in high school : the quintessential 😁
@@reactionextraction Great nickname! Sure beats “Lorax!” (Lori) Hahaha! Luckily it morphed into “LA” by high school.
React to the song, 'Get The Balance Right' That's a banger.
ALOT of GREAT things begin with the letter "D" ...Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Debbie, Dad....😘❤️🎶😂
Love it 😎
@@reactionextraction Truth ❤️❤️
The 101 version is amazing.
Wish Guys would take note of the lyrics and time when this was done. Very Political Lyrically time when Thatcher's Britain was changing and capitalism and greed and people grabbing whatever they could noting has changed in 40 years still the greed and lies go on and the poor get poorer.
i love this song...yeah
Great reaction. A great song to react to is “Love is a Shield” by Camouflage.
Fab Tune yes 😎
I guess listening to them now, the early stuff doesn't seem as dark as their later output. But I think at the time it was considered a little dark, if only for the subjects and themes of their songs. Blasphemous Rumours, People Are People and this for example. No other band in the UK at least sung about these subjects. I mean I *think* Blasphemous Rumours got banned on radio ? I may be wrong. I can defo see the comparison to Duran, although Duran were more "lush" sounding and Mode were more stark and industrial, it was still early 80s pop.
Excactly!I do agree and you so greatly discribed the whole era.Btw Heaven 17 had a quite 'intustrial' sound with their 1982/83 releases but DM were far more impactful and of a wider audience.
Totally agree.Great commentary Stephen.
Absolutely agree Stephen 😎 Great insight and thoughts on two amazing legendary artist ✌🏼✌🏼
@@christianoazzuro6711 Yes DM were more "adult" than Duran most defo. Agree on Heaven 17 also, I think these bands arose during that late 70s boom in new technologies - samplers, drum machines etc; that Kraftwerk were brave enough to push. DM sprung roots that would maybe inspire 90s metal experimentation and alt-pop. Duran were pretty much a cut and paste boy band in theory, but time has proven they have a way with lyrics and story telling that is equally commendable.
@@reactionextraction Thank you sir !
Покажи ей 101 ! Она не врубается, что такое Депеш Мод.
Hell yeah! Nice 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾Hey Abbie check out Drab Majesty 39 By Design if you like the New Wave sound
Yes!
Way better than Duran Duran!
Many DM fans don`t like DD as they were and still are arrogant, Here in the UK DD fans will say the DD are the bigger, better, most hits, most sales and DM are little..... I know, that is so stupid. DM sell out football stadiams around the world that DD could only dream of.
Thx Adam, We love getting the UK perspective on bands and the music culture over there 😎 keep it coming please ... I would say DM are much bigger in America as well 👍🏼 however MTV helped DD with their American audience big time in the 80's - 90's
Duran is nowhere near as good musically as DM was before Wilder left. Duran is decent and I like a lot of their stuff but they have a lot of crap too and don’t have the same depth in musical talent as DM did. Durand hits like hungry like the wolf or rio are really not their best. Their b sides or never released stuff is much better. Simon has a great voice and John plays great bass but Andy and Roger Taylor were just average musicians. Nick is super talented. All of DM was/is super talented as individuals and each brought something special to DM’s sound. As far as sales..having lots of sales doesn’t mean the music or band is good. Lots of average or bad musicians have and do sell lots of music. Real musicians have staying power and can play together for decades like the stones. Taylor Swift sells boatloads of music and is Uber rich but her music is average at best and her lyrics have zero depth or feeling in them. Good music is music still on playlists fifty years after first released…fans are the worst at petty back and forth and pointless arguments. Honestly what difference does it make who is best/richer/popular? It doesn’t have to be “choose only one”..we can like them both.
Wait, what? Those are my two favorite bands.
You don’t have to full all time with dumb filler bad when you that band
