This isn’t about the Joker. This is about the effects of living in New Jersey

The Joker and his smile is also based off a book by Victor Hugo (who also wrote les miserables and hunchback of notre dame), the book in English is called "The Man Who Laughs" and is about a poor homeless boy in England who is then mutilated by having a permanent smile carved into his face, to make money for a travelling show.

      @mechazoic Рік тому +222

Very true. If you want to get specific, the Joker’s smile is based on the portrayal of the character Gwynplaine by Conrad Veidt in the 1928 film production of “The Man Who Laughs”.
In fact the work is referenced several times through Batman media. There was a one-shot called “Joker: The Man Who Laughs”, an evil alternate Bruce Wayne called “The Batman Who Laughs” and in “Batman: The Animated Series” the Joker uses “Gwynplaine Industries” as a shell company for a crime he’s committing to name just a few instances.

The case of James is one of those where he fell through the cracks so many times, and there were so many small failures that led to it. From therapists not taking him seriously to not getting through to the hotline, a series of small events (some accidentally, others negligent) allowed for this to happen. I don’t know who this is, but that was me. I’m Andrea Lanum, daughter of Christopher Lanum. My dad served in Afghanistan and Iraq. He came home with severe PTSD. He was a combat medic. I remember him taking me to fort eustis where he worked sometimes and telling me “I don’t just save soldiers, I save everyone” now I was only 6. But my speculation is that at 18 years old having to save the lives of poor brown children you are terrorizing will create huge mental issues. He came back extremely paranoid. He had some psychotic break, became delusional and would always saying “you have to watch your back” he had a delusion about his roommate Mitchell stone trying to kill him. His gf at the time who I can never forgive for feeding into his delusions when she was perfectly mentally sound, used a taser on Mitchell and then my dad attacked him. Luckily he crawled to a nearby medical center and lived. It has always been a very hard story for me to tell or I get triggered by the joker easily. He tried to commit murder and committed suicide by cop in the same costume he dressed up with me for Halloween. It’s deeply impacted me. I’m sad he’s in these videos. He was a really good person and loved me so much. He just had severe mental illness. The cops should have tried harder to solve the situation. He had my name tattooed on his arm and I have his name tattooed over my heart. He was an 18 year old sent to war where we used intense propaganda and post 9/11 committed heinous acts in the Middle East for oil. He suffered from the effects. The same year he died it became mandatory for veterans to get psychiatric treatment when they came back. The officer Stanley who looked after me in the months after his passing ended up taking his own life as well. I wonder who you are.

I'm somewhat surprised you didn't include Kim De Gelder.
Although on the other hand I'm also glad since I know the people that would commit these types of acts get great pleasure out of being broadcasted for it.
That aside, he supposedly felt a strong connection to Heath Ledger, and the Joker character because of some arbitrary facts like his birthday and initials.
In 2009 he killed an elderly lady, I believe it was his neighbour.
After which (I think there was a week between though) he dressed up as The Joker and went into a daycare centre and murdered two nine month old babies and a staff member with an axe and knives.
He also injured 10 more children and 2 more adults.
A horrific scene to say the least, especially considering the intended victims
Truly unimaginable how someone can premeditate an act like this.
I still remember being a kid hearing about this for the first time.

It's astounding how far and wide the imagery or sometimes inspiration of this character can be connected or related to various crimes. One story I heard was that in Japan a young man dressed up in a joker costume (the suit anyway) and stabbed four people on a subway train while it was in motion with a large kitchen knife. I don't recall if he managed to kill anyone or if he wounded others, so I won't make any definite statements in that regard, and I don't recall if he was directly inspired by the Joker either or if it was just thematic to him, but still his use of the character's image fits with his violent and chaotic crime.
The Joker isn't a character that should be imitated or admired, and that's something that some people with issues of their own who claim to connect with said character seem to miss. Note that the character and his actions are never condoned, but some still seem to fixate on the Joker, typically due to mental issues driving them to do so. I think of this as a false equivalency in regards to what is really to blame, much like with the inaccurate association of violent video games with actual acts of violence, which is to say one doesn't cause the other and there are deeply rooted psychological issues within the individuals in question that are the cause, not the media being consumed and/or the characters within.
Either way, it seems some people are attracted to the image and sometimes what they think of as the ethos of the Joker when what they are truly grappling with are their own inner demons for lack of a better term or otherwise some ideas or held opinions and/or beliefs of their own. I guess some people need something to attach it to, but what would I really know? I'm by no means a psychologist or any kind of expert on the mind or the human condition. I'm merely spouting my own thoughts here ad nauseum in the moment. For anyone who might feel the need to claim that I'm trying to sound smart or deep, please don't get it twisted, I'm not and I know that I'm no great thinker and I don't expect people to take anything I state as worthwhile.
(Edit: I want to note that turns out I was wrong about the case in Japan. It wasn't the Joker's suit, but I was made aware by a commenter on this post that it was in fact a suit similar to it, the suit of Yoshikage Kira. @himikotoga4270: Thanks for the correction. I appreciate you letting me know. I hope you don't mind me giving you a nod for proper credit.)

Just because no one should idolize the character doesn't mean people won't or that it doesn't make sense, you're definitely right.
You're also correct that many people and criminal groups do that kind of stuff already, so I do agree that it's a not the furthest leap to take for career criminals or those who commit criminal acts inspired by the character.

People copied Jared Leto's version of joker. I don't think it has anything to do with how well the character is played.

I feel so bad for James, and especially his victims, bc he REACHED OUT FOR HELP and was denied it. He most likely was schizophrenic based on his hallucinations and he went to a psychiatrist and wasn't given proper medical help! Clearly the voices in his head were getting to be too much and he had to act on them for his own sanity. I only hope the victims who lived and the families of all are doing ok and that he is receiving the medical care he deserves. I've been locked in my own head before and no one deserves to live like that.
