My name is Thais because y Mom liked this music.
Flawless. I've heard this hundreds of times and have never been moved as I was with this performance. Hard to imagine a more beautiful rendition. It literally left me breathless. Brava Janine Jansen!
She is very attractive and enchanting violinist... am enjoying to her play this violin selection over and over again, with all her passion into it. Thanks for the upload.
Never get tired of it, it just has the power to draw me back again and again. Just love it.
So beautiful! My gosh this is so moving, I love when a song can break my heart. Music is truely a wonderful thing.....
What a performance, beautiful lady playing a beautiful peace of music.
Thank's`
jcnet
Janine Bravo!!! Cómo podría alguien no amarte! Divina Janine Jansen.
Ms. Jansen is exquisite! She has a great depth to her playing and an unparalleled expressive technique. Everyone has played this, but she gives us something new, passionate and exciting. She is a revelation, I love the smile she flashes when the audience claps prematurely. Hate the artsy camera work, but it's nonetheless one of my favorite videos. Bravo!
heavenly
jacques
Whenever I want to hear the song I always come back to this video.
Everytime I listen to this, i just...melt.
Still listening to it after 13 years.
So beautiful!!! ❤
so beautiful girl.....so wonderful music.....brava janine
It is difficult not to be enamoured of way of she physicalizes the musical moment. It's an exquisite piece of music that evokes in the listener, a palpable serenity. The faces in the crowd convey it.
What an outstanding performance. Listening to this just gave me a lump in my throat, goosebumps, and watery eyes. That can only mean it has touched the edges of my soul. Janine, you are beautiful in every way.Veramente unica.Une vraie merveille!
favorite melodies
amazing suggestive
you have given us a gift
we are truly grateful for
beautiful Thanks
Janine plays this fabulous music with all her passion and emotions. Thanks
The only person I have ever seen that can come anywhere close to Anne Sophie Mutter. Absolutely breathtaking.
I am in tears. What a beautiful arrangement with orchestra. Floating, lilting, soulful; my favorite version of Massenet's masterpiece.
This musical masterpiece from Massenet always brings tears to my eyes and this is an exceptional recital of it. For me, this piece of music tells the story of the emotional highs and lows that we encounter as we pass through this life. This is what I call 'musical poetry' and I feel richer every time I hear it.
well played, very romantic as it should be and ms fisher is absolutely stunning to watch
I've always loved this piece of music and here it is played so well.
I am blown away. Janine is absolutely the best soloist I have heard in a long time. At least she moves me like no other has in a long time. Bravo!!!!
I am going to listen to "Thais" this weekend.
Lucky me !!!
Love Massenet, thank you.
Real magnificent !!! And what a beauty she is with all her expression and feelings into putting the music together. Bravo !!!
This piece is such a tear jerker, it's amazing that the queen, princess, prince and mayor Cohen all kept their cheeks dry.
The story / opera itself is also a very interesting one, especially food for thought under current political conditions in the Netherlands. See Wikipedia for more info.
Janine, THANKS!!!
I now listen to this version everyday. It inspires me to do better in my life. If I had the talent that JJ possesses in just her little finger, I would truly be.....a happy person! If only I had the willpower 3|
Překrásné- úžasná interpretace, hraje duší.
I like it she played the piece with passion and with a style of her own The way all solos should be played.
I think this is one of my favorite preformences of this song.
she just like Sarah Chang have their own uniqe expressions when they play as do other violinist when they are passionate about a song.
Che bellissima ! Grazie mille fancyfiddler for sharing this wonderfu Massenet piece with us.
One of the most moving violin solos I have ever heard! You are truly amazing and the passion with which you played will make this video/recording timeless!
BRAVO!
One of the interesting things about this performance is that the whole ensemble is tuned to about a 445 A. I think it gives the performance an extra bit of brightness, which, mixed with the pathos of the music, makes the sorrow so much sweeter.
Poetica....lieve come una carezza....commovente....impetuosa....BELLISSIMA.
Beautiful! She plays with such passion. Thanks for posting this.
A wonderful interpretation with highest sensitivity, full of female vitality, tenderness and "Leidenschaft". Congratulations !
My son learned violin in jr high-into hs. I have heard violin so beautiful it makes you weep!
This is beautifully done. Thankfully the Met is doing the opera this season: it is one of my favorites and deserves to be known for more than just this great instrumental.
I'm almost obssessed with her! She's one of the loveliest woman I've ever seen.
She is the Queen!!
one of the very very best
this is still my favorite video of this piece on youtube, even more than the new one of her
one of the best
Absolutely great...amazing...i have to admit I`am totally unfamiliar with this kind of music but I think that the sound of this violin is...I don`t know..VERY SPECIAL ?? Correct me if I am wrong..
Anyway, I am very grateful to a very special person from Venezuela who shared this video with me...Thanks a lot..
"Muchas gracias, querida amiga..."
Greetings from Romania..
Merveilleux !👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dang. She's incredible...the best.
Excellent....thankyou!
A wonderful interpretation of this lovely music.
I think that's one of my favorite takes I've seen on this piece.
I love the way this Massenet masterpiece fools everyone with that fake ending at 4:39. Works everytime!
WONDERFUL !!!
So beautiful!
Me emociona tanto Massenet
The face at 3:23 says it all--------spellbound!
thank you. I enjoyed it.
Sublime, inspiradora...Música para fondo de un poema de amor d esdesperado....
Magnificent!
i fall in love with her...
Janine Jansen...
Sons que tocam nosso coração..
Janine Jansen é realmente uma violinista maravilhosa, sensível e tem uma performance corporal que se confunde com a delicadeza do violino !
Divino.
Hermosa interpretación
Merveilleux !
Such class----can't be equalled on any scale that I know of! 3)
MAGISTRAL,SUBLIME,BELLISIMA.
I just noticed that right at the beginning she seems to be adjusting the wire from a pick-up or microphone on the instrument - and there seems to be a microphone sticking out of her dress near her right shoulder.
I'm not trying to detract from her performance or abilities - I just never would have believed that her performance was amplified. You'd think it would pick up some of the scritches from the bow - unless she doesn't have any?!
Yes... the audience is Dutch. The biggest clue is at 2:06, with the Dutch flag held by the man in Orange.
Bravo!
Muito bom!
How to said Montserrat Caballè...The music is the best of life...
BRAVO!!
My hairs are on end listening to this...
My Name Is Thais :) This Makes Me SUPER HAPPY!!!
Beautiful... magnificent i truly love her vibrato and purity oh the melody.
i probably gonna get harassed for making this comment:
i personally don't like the way she kind hunches over. but it doesn't take away from her tone and quality of playing,so, power to the hunch!
Just exquisite
splendid
Bravo!
I just went and listened to several versions of the meditation...including Yo-Yo-Ma's and Anne-Sophie Mutter's. I still prefer this one although they are ALL great performances. I am sad to hear that JJ might be ill and not performing these days. I truly hope that is not true and that someday she might come and play with the indianapolis symphony.
Ms. Jansen's rendering is definitely my favorite since I first heard this piece many years ago. A nuances which I think help make it so: The orchestral "accompaniment" vs. piano. The piano is equal-tempered; as a result, many of the notes in sharp keys are slightly flat (it gets worse the more sharps you add), so playing in-tune with a piano cause the player to slightly flatten notes, detracting from their brilliance, and blurring the "human-voice" quality of the sound. Not so with this video!
Yes je suis d'accord
Considering where the "Meditation" falls in the opera(act II), before the alluring courtesan's conversion, it's not unreasonable to have the "Meditation" convey her(Thais) sensual sexuality. Beyond that.."Die gustibus non est disputatum". It's a matter of taste.
music of soul and demon! é maravilhosa e demoniaca tal musica.
oops i mean ms jansen, the way she holds the violin does look a little awkward, i noticed that too but i enjoyed it very much
Reminds me of Helga from Hey Arnold!...ahh, memories....
@morynishikawa just another one feeling there are no words for.
For below post, yeah, beautiful is probably the closest one.
Ah, thank you! A little bit of my ethnocentrism was coming out there :-/ Thanks.
I find it somewhat amusing that all those so-called aristocrats were cluless as to the end of The Meditation and began applauding before the last bar was played. Even I know that and I'm what they would call "a commoner". #LOL ...and JJ just continued to blow them all away!
Homegirl saws a mean fiddle!

It's a beautiful performance, but I like Sarah Chang's rendition better (I'm aware that's not a fair comparison, since Chang plays so effortless it's crazy).
But I really enjoyed how much sentiment Janine Jansen brought to the piece.
She certainly does not too much vibrato for this particular work. She plays it very intelligently, with feeling, and without overdoing it. The orchestra got a bit carried away in spots, though.
@edgarbiervliet Ya know, when I first watched this I thought "I've seen her before somewhere". Now I know HOW I must have seen her as I was somewhat connected to the SA at one time in my life.
Thank you for that info.
peace
I want a strad too.. ;)
Ah! I see! This is the gil who got a bigger picture than Angela Gheorghiu in the poster for the concert!:P
Probably because she is Dutch, but still is rude to do this with a guest star. I think Angela was right in this dispute and the duch will never see her again! Poor her....she will have to sing only in Covent Garden, Wien, Met and La Scala ....she must cry right now!:D
@technocrash09 And by the way, I even spelled the valid alternative...."aficionado" incorrectly the first time! I am surprised you did not catch that! *lol* (C'mon, I'm just havin' fun with it now!). See? I can critique myself as well! :)
On a different note, have you listened to Yo-Yo MA play this on cello? Not as good as JJ on violin but moving, just the same. I have played it on piano (my only instrument so far). Doesn't work well yet. At least not for me.
is there a backing track for the ochestra for this piece?? i want to perform with orchestra :(
35gazz: Are you an adult beginner at violin?
I started playing about 12 years ago, at age 46. I'm working on the Meditation right now.
Does anyone know when and where this performance took place?
That's an interesting point - I just can't figure out where the extra harmonics are. There's the A in Bar/Measure 5, A in B/M 16,D in B/M 17 (repeated later), then the ending 2 harmonics, all usual. Where are the others?
I once heard Perlman in a hall with TERRIBLE acoustics. He could have used one of those microphones. I was sitting maybe 20 feet (6 M.) from him, and the sound was still being deadened by the hall.
I hate the "artsy" camera-work; I'd rather watch her just play.
