I've listened to this concert at least a dozen of times in the passed couple of years and it never fails to uplift me. This man is a valuable antidepressant.
Endearing, I’ve seen others do it, but it’s rare. Probably some old school country/ outlaw country/folk artists come to mind maybe. Prine, Townes, Guy Clark.
I discovered this man and the band over a decade ago watching the show Moral Oral. The show and the song No Children completely wrecked my life. I cried so much, i felt the love and damage so much. The sense of loss and freedom. Seeing that episode and hearing that song changed my life. The only bands since then i have seen more live is tool, and jj grey and mofro.
was talking to a fellow tMG enthusiast at a goats show at the 9:30 club last night, he asked what my favorite live set was, we both- near simultaneously- responded "swedish american hall". this show is just so raw and pure and extensive, i appreciate it so much, as well do most fans. if anyone wants to learn more about tMG or even try to get into them, this is where to start.
I love that our fan base is so dedicated that we can ask about favourite sets 😊 I met a guy earlier this year who is just as into the Mountain Goats as I am - it’s so awesome talking to people who are obsessed with the same thing as you!
This video made the Mountain Goats my favorite band some 10 years ago. I still come back here regularly to watch and listen to John just being his authentic, awesome self.
cant stop listening to this, best performances ever of many of his great songs. The Jerusalem line in this year was sung so perfectly, and the crowd knew it too lol.
Such an amazing band/man. John Darnielle is the best lyricist (I'd possibly say story teller as well) out there today and definitely the most prolific. I've been lucky to have seen them twice; both times were incredible. Shared one show with my brother in NYC and the other with my then fiancé (it didn't work out) up in Woodstock NY. Both breathtaking shows.
I live in Boulder, CO. It is two weeks after the supermarket shooting. I cannot hear Store the same way ever again. [putting comment here as time capsule]
I love the style of "dance music" he had going. I've looked at other live versions but didn't like them as much. I can't say I did an exhaustive search, but if anyone knows of a version of the song similar to this but complete I'd be grateful. I love this version of from TG&Y. I'm a recent discoverer of the Mountain Goats but I inhale the stuff.
There is a recording online of the whole concert without that song cut out. It's an .mp3 and a bit hard to find. I don't even know if I still have it on my computer.
yeah these paste magazine performances are always stitched together weird with the incorrect time codes in the descriptions. sucks that theyre often the best full concerts available
Me too; this is one of my favorites. The other one I really love is Bottom of the Hill 2008. I wish he'd finished Dance Music, I haven't heard a version that comes close to how much I liked the parts he did in this concert.
I didn't even watch Moral Orel much, it just happened to be on in the background one day and like a year later I owned all the CDs and had seen him live lmao
John is his own show, honestly. I've seen them a few times and he always provides entertainment with his jokes and personality. Last time I saw them he took a break to finish an audience member's beer.
The dipping hankies in blood thing does actually make sense... In England when Charles the First was executed, by beheading, spectators dipped their snotrags in the blood of a king thinking it was a blessing.
Very, very late on responding to this. But I’m pretty sure it’s a different song. He sings Golden Boy for G instead of Going to Georgia. Somebody in the audience yells out about then and he says “I’d hate that”. He hates Going to Georgia and won’t perform it anymore because it has really misogynistic and unhealthy themes.
sometimes i wish john darnielle would get the idea that when people yell out requests, it's because they LIKE YOU, MAN. don't dog on their requests or the songs they like; you're receiving a compliment and then giving the audience crap for enjoying your art. feel flattered from time to time.
Crazy how this is one of the only recordings of Standard Bitter Love Song #1 and it's easily top-tier early Mountain Goats

I love his voice, the subtle quaver of his voice and the energy he puts into performing in these live shows is one of my favorite things to listen to.
I love the old albums ,the 1st few yrs when he put in a casio keyboard song in every 5 to 6 songs ,those casio songs are so cute

Any available surface is such an awesome song! He has so many unreleased songs that I wish I could put on a playlist and binge
But you can!
Oh damn y'all fixed the timestamps in the description! Thank you! Aaaa I love this recording!!!
"Kirk Fitzpatrick, I remember when they sent you away, man. This one's for you"
if the raw files of this are still around on a hard drive somewhere i will literally fix this edit for free
Best version of Love, Love, Love I've heard
this is love
THE BEST-EVER DEATH METAL BAND OUT OF DENTON
the guitar finally cutting in on the line "i felt like myself again" hit hard honestly

Does anyone have any idea where to get the mp3?
If anyone's still trying to find it, I found it on the Internet Archive.
Best version of Cobbscook Bay I've heard.

Nice profile picture
Easily one of my all time favorite songs. Beautiful and heartbreaking.
If it wasn't for Moral Orel I wouldn't have discovered this epic band.
I didn't even watch Moral Orel much, it just happened to be on in the background one day and like a year later I owned all the CDs and had seen him live lmao
I love Moral Orel! But yeah, I was already into Mountain Goats so I was pumped when I started season 3.
My favorite band and my favorite show
That last song just kills me. Wow.
I was waiting for him to finish Dance Music, but he never did!
So wonderful
"When you punish a person, for dreaming his dream, don't expect them to thank or forgive you."
as my moment approachesssssssssssssssss
Asian people
He should release 'hello old rabbit' already 🥲

Wow what a fucking setlist holy shit
I like the quality of these versions better than the cassette recording style he does on albums
Marduk T-Shirt or Michael Myers Resplendent would be my picks for "M"
The dipping hankies in blood thing does actually make sense... In England when Charles the First was executed, by beheading, spectators dipped their snotrags in the blood of a king thinking it was a blessing.
I absolutely love Golden Boy but now I know never to should it out during JD asking for request.
now THAT'S how you end a concert
Oh ok fuck, I thought I’d concluded what the best mountain goats boot was. But this actually might be it. Holy shit
This set is FULL of amazing old cuts I had no idea he ever played after 2004. Holy shit this is good
Another version of this great concert: ua-cam.com/video/J4hnK0ep6Uo/v-deo.html
The tracklisting times are a bit off by a couple of minutes
omg. captions ON. TRUST the previous guy. rilly. Hi=larious.
Tonya Anderson it's not even close lol
Ghosts is as great a song as he's written.
Alphabetic setlist .. (almost)
Hi Joel.

standard bitter love song
😍
I understand why he doesn't do Golden Boy much, but I never considered it a joke song
Is he wearing 2 wedding rings
Jai jai Bolenath!
I guess he was doing any alphabet thing in this set list....
I really like him, but this version of love love love, not so much. Am I the only one who tought it was weird?
