John's appreciation for playing music is unprecedented and a pleasure to watch. Not to mention this is definitely the best lineup The Mountain Goats have had to date.
Benjamin Bird Amen to this. I love the work John Vanderslice and Annie Clark did on Heretic Pride and the Bright Mountain Choir on the early stuff and whatnot, but this is the best full-time lineup without a doubt. I feel like a solid 30% of my tMG listening is just agog over Jon "funniest drummer/drummiest funny person" Wurster's artistic craft, lol
Usually a word you don't use in radio station performances, but the cinematography in this looks great, KEXP. Awesome background, nice cameras, invisible cameramen?
I check out 50+ bands each week to find stuff that I like, and this is is one of the most enjoyable that I've found so far this year. Fantastic music - really inspiring.
If you're looking to get deeper in, I'd recommend listening through The Sunset Tree, Beat the Champ, Moon Colony Bloodbath, or Transcendental Youths. This band is pretty old and there's tons of older albums and songs.
their music takes me back to the days of the band 'They Might Be Giants' and The Decemberists. Their second song they preformed, 'Andrew Eldrich is moving back to Leeds' totally reminds me of the song 'birdhouse in your soul'. Interesting how the drummer brings in a disco type sound into the mix with his particular style of drumming to their music.
You're both right. G# and Ab are the same note, but the key of Emaj has four sharps. Those sharps are all the flats of different notes, but they're always referenced as sharps with regard to Emaj, because music theory.
I was traveling through the airport in December after a medical procedure, and checked out a book store while waiting for my plane home,. In the front of the store was a display of Devil House, a new mystery novel by John Darnielle. I guess he's written three mysteries now, so he has that to fall back on if the music doesn't work out.
oh jeeze, i don't think that's a problem. new fans and old fans like the new material alike. new fans are happy to hear old tunes and old fans are happy to see new fans. I think his point is more about a mindset of being stuck in the past that's toxic. not liking things from the past.
@@moosemanis23 don't really need the choir, just a couple background singers would work, make it a more stripped back song, how Mountain Goats works best.
Yet without "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," music would be much different. Whether one likes the album or not, it was a revolutionary album and it influenced countless bands that followed, as well as many other bands of the time. One can only wonder where music would have led if not for all the innovations that existed within that one album alone.
danman6669 I agree to some extent, but I feel like that’s missing the thrust of what he was saying. Understanding and steeping yourself in the past is something that’s important, but looking back with rueful wonder and sadness for what’s come to pass is another. I thought his ideas about nostalgia were really heartfelt and valuable. Lonely Hearts gave us a lot, but being cautioned against the perils of staring backwards while life hurtles fruitfully on is important, too.
@@meatcreap I think danman actually proved JD's point about nostalgia. Reverence and nostalgia should not be conflated, they are two different things, people need to listen a little harder to what is being said.
Not that you've been waiting three years to get this answer, but, yes, you can do inversions on the guitar. He seems to be a bit of a strumner, however, so I don't think it's the way he's used it playing the guitar.
"Nostalgia will make you old" ..thats pretty inspiring.

I involuntarily yelped 'YES!' when they started with Blood Capsules. My favourite song from Beat the Champ that isn't on Beat the Champ.
This is the first time I've heard of these guys but they have immediately become one of my favourite bands!!!!!
I always love hearing John talk about his process.
this is so pure, bless
i fucking love listening to the mountain goats while im hammered

Coroner's Gambit
Check out the Bottom of the Hill concert. It's one of my favorite things to listen to once you get past the guy that yells in the audience.
That version of San Bernadino was just stunningly beautiful!

I am in love with the vibe of this whole video 😄 goths is such a solid album, mountain goats forever baby 🤘
I knew wurster was going to chime in with that class of '84 reference #bestshow4life
John Darnielle's ages like a fine wine musically. Amazing peformance
This is definitely my favorite version of San Bernadino. So beautiful.
Love these guys. Got tickets to their London show in October. Can't wait!
These guys are good!
I believe an E major technically has a G# not an Ab because the natural A is the 4th but that's less important than how amazing The Mountain Goats are
G# and Ab are the same note, man.

they're so lovely
I...................................Love It
So good.
Fantastic content!
Such an awesome set. That was the most beautiful rendition of San Bernardino I've heard so far.
Nobody ever gets away /o/
I love that he talks about these esoteric music theory terms.
Mountain Goats are amazing! I discovered them by watching moral Orel!
Goths is wonderful. Would love to see a good quality version of Rain of Soho (song of the year for me), but any MG song is a thrill to hear.

great chat
Digging that Doobie Brothers vibe in Blood Capsules!
Great interview. I like this version of Shelved better than the album version.
17:50 "I can still see the rust-colored pants today"
Awesome! Kind of Ben Folds meets Bill Bailey... Love it.
personally they remind me of a mix of The Decemberists with They Might Be Giants...
Yay! loved Goths
I stroll into the lobby, mouth full, of white castles...
Local goat discovers music theory
im almost sure there's a song by that name on one of the earliest albums, almost
I hope the driver of the van of the first European tour sees this and gives John his jacket back
i wonder how much of john's anti-nostalgia is him thumbing his nose at fans who prefer the older mountain goats records... :p

Honestly Blood Capsules is a pretty shit song either way.
Is that Alan Partridge on bass?
Ayy! (y)
Why without "Rain In Soho"?
Uncle Bogdan because it would be a little bit hard to fit a full choir in the live room.
the mountain goats have so many amazing songs that im incredibly grateful that they play any of them in any order at any time
@@moosemanis23 don't really need the choir, just a couple background singers would work, make it a more stripped back song, how Mountain Goats works best.
Peter sings! Diskothi Q returns!
OMG who gave them permission to be so cute and dorky!!!
I love The Mountain Goats. But in the moment when I realised this, I got I am not that young anymore. :,(
The drummer is the guy from The Postal Service auditions 😂😂 Denny and the Fun Blasters

Lets be real though, how many "favorite bands" does she actually have that have played on here?
Great performances but I need that dude's lovely fender jazzmaster.
But you can do inversions on guitar right? Like you do a C chord, while also playing the thick E string, and you get an inversion. No??

will this be available as a download?
I'm sure it will, but if not, you can snag it by running the sharable URL through a youtube-mp3 converter.
Why is there what looks like a polypore mushroom atop the headstock of JD's acoustic guitar?
Ovation guitars flourish, never mind.
when john plays the rhodes he looks like a kitty cat
Came for the music, got a quick lesson in songwriting for free!
Your rushing?
...strictly sourgrass, don't harsh bro....
Is this a song or a speech?
The interview portion is excruciating. The rest of it has something to offer, but I still don't like it.
Cheesy lounge jazz paired with inane musings
I thought this was a tMG lyric lmao
Comment attempting to be edgy paired with a complete lack of taste in music.
