  • Reaction to Tangerine from Led Zeppelin III Side 2, which has a totally different vibe from Side 1. This is the acoustic folk part of the album. Mike & Dev also give a listen to a cover by The Thermals.
Our reaction to Gallows Pole has been blocked by UA-cam, so it can now be found for FREE on our Patreon page - / 84523407
Haven't heard these songs in a LONG time. (Dev hasn't heard some of them at all.) We are re-experiencing them, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate more about Zeppelin, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.

before i even listen to your reaction, again, these songs are very personal to me. i learned to play them on Sunday mornings, alone, with my acoustic guitar, looking up tabs in the early days on the web, late 90s and early 2000s. i listened and strummed. to this day, if i pick up a guitar, i play Tangerine. these songs are deceptively simple, magnificently performed.

LZ's version is more like Leadbelly's 'Gallis Pole' recorded in 1939, which is before Gerlach's version.

Just as with Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid, I can always almost hear the beginning of Tangerine, as Gallows Pole is Ending.

Amazed by how you can dig up the works where Led Zeppelin got their music from.
Gives an insight into what they were listening to and what their inspiration was.

That little fuzzy guitar solo in tangerine has always sounded to me as if the guitars were weeping over the long lost love and the memories of her and wondering if she still remembers him

Thanks for the alternate versions, always interesting to hear. In the 'Page and Plant Unledded' sessions one of the band members plays the hurdy gurdy on Gallows Pole, which fits in very nicely.

So after writing and recording “ Gallows Pole” , which builds from just a gentle guitar and soft vocal into something much more powerful and multilayered, did Jimmy Page think “ Hmmmmm.Maybe we can do something along the same lines, but even more epic next time??!!! Any guesses guys?

@@MusicforBusyPeople No question the Zeppelin version is better. Whether Zep did the "right thing" or the "wrong thing" with their "covers" (proper credit vs. not so much), its pretty inescapable that Led Zeppelin's versions were always significantly better.

Bron-Yr-Aur is pronounced like "bron-er-ire". Gallows Pole is more in line with Lead Belly's, I believe. Yes, that was Jimmy playing Jonesy's banjo. He said afterward he traded Jonesy a guitar for it but some years later they ended up trading back. I believe all 3 sang back up on the song. I don't believe it was ever performed live, however, Robert would sometimes add the "see saw margery daw, gonna swing" and "hangman, hangman hold it a little while, I think I see my brother coming, riding many miles" parts while they improvised through Trampled Under Foot. I love the contrast of a fun, bouncy little ditty about a macabre topic. It reminds me of The Beatles' Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Jimmy supposedly wrote Tangerine about Jackie De Shannon whom he dated briefly while still a session musician. Jimmy would often sing back up on this when performed in concert. The cover of Tangerine wasn't interesting at all - definitely less charm.

@@danielmass2florida848 sorry, that was my intention, to my knowledge, Bonzo didn't sing on Battle of Evermore but I've seen concert footage of Jonesy singing Sandy Denny's part while playing three-necked instrument that had a mandolin at the top, 12-string in the middle and 6-string on the bottom.
