  • ** UPDATED VIDEO **
    Here is a new updated version of this video:
    • Raspberry Pi Travel Ro...
    This video talks about how we can turn a Raspberry Pi into a travel wireless router. If you've been wondering what you should be doing with your Raspberry Pi, this is a very practical way to make use of it, especially as we start to travel more or if you are one who is starting to go back to coffee shops more as well. I am mainly using a software called Rasp AP (raspap.com/). There is good documentation on the site but a few quirks, depending on what you want to do. Make sure to follow the steps in the right order. I do recommend you installing the Raspberry Pi OS (raspbian) from scratch.
    ** Update Feb 06, 2024 **
    This video is a bit out of date now because of updates to RaspAP and how things behave now. I am working on an updated video on this. I will link to that video once it is completed and published.
    ** Update **
    As one of the commenters have pointed out to me, you can enable SSH and the Wifi settings in the Raspberry Pi Imager application. I believe this was released with version 1.7. (Thanks Liam!)

    Good video, thank you!! Mikrotik HAP AC & AX models make great travel routers aswell, due to their small size and "universal" 12-28v DC barrel jack input.
    Mine currently does:
    1. WiFi bridge to host infrastructure eg hotel.
    2. AP for my phone and laptop.
    2.1 AP for IoT
    3. AP for guests.
    4. DHCP, DNS, firewall for all subnets.
    Busy working on adding Ad-blocker using containers + a decent usb drive on the Mikrotik's usb port.
    Then to find a usb hub that works..

    Really nicely done!!! Your discussion of the terminal commands with brief explanations along the way way especially welcomed. I assume that as you log the Pi to a WiFi that has a splash screen you can handle it from the screen you showed so your other devices, like maybe a Firestick or Roku that you're traveling with don't have to?

    • @EverydayTechTV
      @EverydayTechTV  2 роки тому +2

      I think I know what you are trying to say. Let me know if this answers your question, but if you are traveling with a Firestick or Roku, I would setup the Firestick or Roku to connect to your raspberry pi network. Once you get to your destination, all you have to do is make sure your Raspberry Pi is connected to the wifi network at your destination. Your Firestick or Roku box should already be configured to your raspberry pi and now on the internet.

      @@EverydayTechTV You understand my question, but I was really trying to ask is does the Pi show a Coffee Shop's (or hotel) popup screen when logging in, if one is used, so you can log it in to host WiFi no matter what their normal log-in requires?

    • @EverydayTechTV
      @EverydayTechTV  2 роки тому +1

      I'll say this upfront, I haven't come against this situation but this topic has come up a lot. It depends on what devices are connected to it. It also depends on how the captive portal (which is the popup) is setup. A lot of times, it has to do with your browser, so it might be a per device situation. I know that doesn't answer your question but that's what came to mind.

    I looked at this earlier this year but ultimately went with the build Network Chuck had using OpenWRT... which I'm familiar with. But it has some issues and I didn't see you go down this path on your build either. I get how you can scan for networks and select a local wife source... hotel, coffee shop, public services, etc. But what do you do if the host has a Captive portal? How do you get to a browser?

    • @EverydayTechTV
      @EverydayTechTV  2 роки тому +1

      Even if you connect your raspberry pi to the hotel's ethernet, you are still connecting your device to your raspberry pi via wifi. This means, you just connect it the same way. When you connect to the raspberry pi via wifi, you basically have your own private network. eth0 now becomes your main source of internet and not plan. I hope that makes sense.

    Just can't get this to work. I installed a second wifi dongle so the built in radio doesn't have to do double duty, but this program can't be configured to do that as far as I can figure out. I wanted the client to use wlan1 to scan for wifi connections and wlan0 (the built in wifi) to broadcast the SSID to share and bridge the eth0 interface to to the wwan so I could plug in something if I needed to. Adding OpenVPN or Wireguard VPN between the client and the wwan would be nice, but try as I might, I could not get RaspAP to do this. Seems like it can be configured this way - it just doesn't work when you do. It insists on using the uap0 interface instead of client on wlan1 and the hotspot on wlan0.

      Good point and good idea! I'm going to see if I am able to get a hold of one. I'm just a small channel (at the time of this comment 😀 ) so I can't just pick one up at any time.
      The one thing to consider about a dedicated AP is the software and firmware. Those devices usually have optimized firmware and software for those specific tasks. The RaspAP is a piece of software that runs on a Raspberry Pi, so there's potential overhead and bottlenecks around.
      I might do a comparison between this and a portable travel router, so there's a one to one comparison as far as use case is concerned.

    I haven't been able to get this to work at all really. after fresh install It treat's my hotspot as though it were already on (despite having no internet connection when I join the network) after saving settings it never allows me to access to wifi client access point mode. I have spent like 6 hours trying things in the documentation but so far no luck.

    Being a year old I don't think i'll get a reply. But I am able to set everything up the way you say. And I can scan for new networks as you did. However, if I try to put in the password to add it, I get a "must be 8-xx in length." And this is on a known good network that i can set the pi up for if I pick that from the start. I can't seem to add a second one. I'd love to see the process of going to a coffee shop and logging into the RaspAP and then connecting to that SSID and surf the internet. This part doesn't seem to work.

      I believe the RaspAP software has updated and things might not work the same. I remember someone from the development team actually reached out to me before about this video. I think he said the software wasn’t originally made to work this way. I really need to revisit this video sooner than later. I’m going to play around with it tonight. I got a hold of another raspberry pi.

      Yup... there's no reason why you can't. Of course, the RaspAP software is running so it's taking up some resources. Also, by default, the RaspAP software is running a web server, so you need to make sure that you don't have anything else using the same ports (virtual ports).

    If you follow these instructions as they are shown in the video it does not work - at least not any more. Installatio of PI no longer has pi as the default user. Installation always hangs. If you run it twice it completes - so its buggy right from the outset. Secondly you cannot get uap0 to show in that list and therefore cannot continue. That is with a stock pi just power, stock os, stock install.
