Can not find a place that direcetly ships Tig Fingers here to scandinavia, the local shops we have that sell the original Tig finger are asking 70 bucks for them, Lol. I would much rather buy 5 of them directly from Jody and support him than those thieves. You are awesome Jody.

if i am not sure what type of stainless it is, 312 would be my first choice. 309 second, 308 third.
exhaust headers could be 300 series stainless like 308 or high end headers might even be 321, but some are 400 series like 409. 312 will handle all of them

    Jody,
We use a big tapered brass plug with a hole in it to purge pipe. It works for 3/4" to 4". Just lightly tap it in and it seals up nice.

contractors develop procedures for all kinds of processes and joints that are not common. for example, i have heard of open root pipe with 7018 for the root with no backing. It depends on job requirements, the engineering authority, and if the procedure can be qualified within the scope of the applicable code.. But I cant picture flux core working very well. One slip of the hand and you have whiskers inside the pipe.

I am guessing you should probably use filler metal. It actually depends on fit-up, joint type, etc. for a good fit on an outside corner joint, you might get by with no filler. But on other joints with slight gaps, filler metal works better.

Another excellent video. And dang it......y'all order a 3 pack of fingers. Was just using one the past couple days on a bunch of aluminum projects and they are indeed a damned handy thing to have. Kept the burning and cussing down to a bare minimum (not a welder by trade at all, but in the shop I work at I am constantly building brackets and other bits and pieces out of a variety of materials to bolt down various items in police vehicles)

Most headers are built using 304 or 409. I would agree that a 312 filler would be ideal to cover any instance that may come up when building headers for your car/truck

I do those joints every day, for being "rusty" it looks awfully good. Some of mine don't turn out that nice haha. Any chance that you've dabbled with the new flux cored tig filler for stainless? I have yet to use it (i've been on the commercial end of work for 5 years and haven't done industrial in awhile) Apparently you can use the flux core on large bore with no purge and it turns out a sugarless root. I think it would make a great video. You are really good with pointers.

masking tape can be detramental to some welds due to the chlorine in the glue, make sure you know what the end use of the product is. There is chlorine free tape. Aluminum foil works great, just ball some up around purge hose then just shove it in tight.

have you thought of using the temporary rubber freeze plugs with a hole drilled into it for your argon just a thought Iv'e never used argon so i don't know if it would help but it could save time getting set up and they don't cost much at an auto parts store

when you have to close an opening near the weld, you can replace tape (that would melt and burn) with aluminium foil.

I am sure this is a dumb question, but I am new and have 16ga 403 tube to weld myself. Why didn't you use any filler rod for this? Was it just do to the application the tube was going to be used for, or is it just not needed with this thin wall tubing?

  • @weldingtipsandtricks

i think the rule would be that if it needs a bevel, it probably needs filler.

Great video! One question though. I've always seen stainless welds have all sorts of color in them from purple or blue to that wheat/straw color. Is there a correlation between color and weld strength/quality when welding stainless? Is that regular silver color from this video what you're looking for?
