The 3 point line was added at the beginning of Larry's nba career. He spent his life prior to this not practicing the 3 point shot. Players who came after him grew up with 3 pointers so of course some of them are going to have better 3 point percentages than the players of Larry's era.
People forget or don't know that the old ABA (1967-1976) did have a 3 point line. It had future Hall of Famers including players such as Rick Barry and Julius Irving, to name a few. The concept of 3pt shots wasn't a new idea in 1979. Larry and Magic were only a year or so younger than I. Kids absolutely watched those games and tried their hands at shots from that line. The difference is that it was a weapon, not the preferred, go-to shot it is today.

Statistics without context are useless.
Correct. Bird them up in specific situations, such as with the game on the line, or when a 3 would be a dagger in the other team, and break them, and not just putting them up in games that were over.
As an old Lakers fan believe you me I know all about Larry Bird. Now that era is over. I can set aside my biases and better appreciate what a good player he was.
JJ just wants to go by percentages and nothing else.... very poor take. In context, he needs to understand that Larry never had a 3pt line before the nba, and played his early seasons under a coach who frowned upon threes.
Once Larry actually started started shooting a few (more than 1 per game) he shot 50.0/39.8/90.6 over his last 8 seasons, which is fantastic line for anyone, but even better with his volume of 26 ppg.
He also doesn't consider how good Larry was in crunch time. Unfortunately there are no "clutch stats" any earlier than the late 90s.

What many people don't consider today is that the 3 point shot was introduced in 1979 so was NEVER practiced when those players were learning and earning their way to professional basketball.

As an avid 76 fan back in the 1980s, the Bird Man was a thorn in our side for 3-4 years. Bird had such an impact on the league when he came in. I hated him because he was that good. He had the Caitlyn Clark effect back in 1981 until 87. Just a great competitor on so many levels. Props to the Bird Man. Never heard Larry Legend much until after he retired. He deserves that caveat, also.
Honestly, I don't think people who didn't live through that era or that didn't grow up watching Larry Bird can really truly understand just how good he actually was. He started his career of the year I was in kindergarten and retired the year I graduated so I grew up watching Larry Bird and the way he controlled the game and dominated was unbelievable. It wasn't like watching Michael Jordan who seemed like he can defy gravity and gave you spectacular flashy plays for sports center, he just play the game damn near perfect and his highlights consisted of him just doing it better than anybody. He was making NBA level players look like they were kids playing against the Harlem Globetrotters half the time
I was 14 yrs old when he came on the scene in 81. From 81 to 87 he was hands down, the Best player on the court on any given night. I am a 76 er fan.

Actually, James Naismith was our first coach…at Kansas…and he died a Jayhawks..His original 10 rules of Basketball are behind glass at KU…Lawrence, Kansas…Wilt played for us…before he joined the Globetrotters..the first “baskets” were actually peach baskets you might find at a farmers’ market…( and they didn’t cut the bottom out…had to climb a ladder when someone scored)..but yeah, the man coached KU…died there in 1939..buried beside his wife..

JJ who was a nobody in the NBA wants to judge Larry Bird one of the greats that transcend time.
Let's face the facts. The 3 point line messed up basketball. It used to be a man's game. You want points. You had to earn them. You want 3 points. You had to get fouled to get that. Wilt Chamberlain averaged 37 points a game as a rookie. And he nearly quit after that season because of the beating he took to get them. Jordan averaged 37 points for one season. Did he take a beating to get that? Did he threaten to quit after that season? How many NBA players today average 30 points a game? Today there are 3 players averaging 30 points a game. Do you think they are getting beaten up physically to get those points? So essentially the league has gotten softer because of the 3 point line. When Chamberlain got his 37 points per game in his rookie season he played 46 minutes per game. The current high scorer is averaging 34 minutes per game. Fewer minutes in a less physical league with an easier way to score points. I say to save the NBA we need to remove the 3 point line. Make players earn their points again.
Simple, JJ has a friend who spends his whole career chasing empty stats and breaking meaningless records. That's why.

JJ was a great shooter but never stepped up at the most important times. Dude is jealous of guys like Larry. Simple as that. I’m a lifelong Lakers fan, Magic was my guy, i had to call out sick when Kobe passed because the tears were flowing. but I’m also a fan of good basketball, and Larry is my GOAT. And the defense point? Guys were literally hanging on birds jersey, elbowing him and breaking his face several times. Larry had so many tricks in his bag that unlike Jordan or Kobe, the defenders had to figure out if he was going to shoot or pass. And they weren’t allowed to zone. JJ should know better.

Best shooter hands down next to Allen Iverson. Bird always picked the ball from the opponent when the Celtics needed It. He was a pain in the backside. I still have nightmares over this guy. Not the best defender straight up but he always came out with the ball in critical situations. What a great player in 6-7 year period. Players were jealous of fame back then. Now they show great admiration for him because they are done playing the game. They knew he was a Bad Man.

Here's what's being missed and is so important. I am 55 years old, and grew up watching Bird, Magic, Jordan, Barkley, etc. I can even remember watching Dr. J, Pistol Pete, and George "The Ice Man" Gervin. I have my heroes from when I was a kid. I also remember when I was 16 years old and had absolutely nothing in common with my father. We loved each other, but there wasn't much else there... Except for 2 things. The Lakers and The Celtics. No matter how far we drifted apart we could always come back together over Bird and Magic. Those memories are priceless to me. So with that being said. I will never talk trash to younger fans, or about today's great players. I am just so happy that they have their favorites, love their guys, or their teams, because of what mine meant to me. I am excited to see the future of the NBA, because of the love of the game, players and teams, and that is so important to maintaining the relevance of basketball and giving young people heroes and something to aspire to. There are great basketball players in the league today, but more importantly, men that are worthy to look up to. I am glad everyone has their GOAT, regardless of who that might be.

Lost in the shuffle of this talk about Curry and his problem with people holding him for 48 minutes, allegedly, is the fact that man-to-man defense was the only defense allowed when Larry Bird played. The rule change in 2001 and teams can play zone defense, because it's just too much of a hassle for a millionaire athlete to actually have to play defense for 48 minutes. Mandatory man to man used to be what separated men from the boys when going from college to the pros. Now we practically get everybody gets your trophy basketball

The 3 point shot was introduced during Bird's rookie year. He had never practiced much from that distance and his 3 point percentages were much higher AFTER his first 2-3 years. It's stupid to argue that he wouldn't have been better from 3 point range if he'd grown up with the 3 point shot.
I am from UK never heard of JJ but found this 'JJ Redick played 15 seasons for 6 teams, including the Magic and Clippers. He averaged 12.8 points and 2.0 rebounds 940 games '. Larry bird '24.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 6.3 assists' 897 games plus He was selected to play in 12 All-Star games, won the Rookie of the Year award, 3 MVP awards, 2 Finals MVP awards, and 3 NBA championships. Bird was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 19981.

Fun fact. NBA teams didn't average 10 3 point attempts per game until the year after Bird retired. They meant more when they were the exception, not the norm.

The 3 pointer, initially, was an anomaly. Threes were shot at end of games when you were down by 10 with 2 minutes left. The line has changed as well
Great players that played in the same era as Bird ruthlessly torched him for his comments. They watched Bird dominate and terrorize the best black players in the league and show mad respect for his game. That game against the Hawks in New Orleans was a great example. He absolutely torched some of the best players in the league and they were helpless to stop him.
Bird was grabbed and held too. Kareem Abdul Jabbar, James Worthy, Byron Scott, Michael Cooper, and Dennis Rodman all had trouble holding on to him. Lmao!
The 3 point line was only added to the game in 79-80. So the fact that it was brand new during Larry’s time is huge and the mentality/play style favored the midrange jump shot over 3’s should be considered. Now 3’s are favored over midrange and Larry is still better than most guys today!

This actually is for everyone …out west in Kansas, where I am from…we have a school in Lawrence called the University of Kansas, KU, the Jayhawks..and the man who invented basketball , James Naismith, was our first coach…he preached team play..,and sportsmanship…his original 10 RULES OF BASKETBALL are there behind glass…an in my eyes, Larry Bird was head and shoulders above everyone as the ultimate team player who elevated everyone around him…the Chief, Robert Parrish, big Kevin McHale and Dennis Johnson were all better players because of Bird..and the Hall of Fame said, you are good enough..Magic and Bird entered the Hall on the same day…which was revealed by NBA Commissiiner Stern at Bird’s retirement..something else…Magic leads the NBA in winning percentage…Larry Legend is 2/10ths of a percent behind…about 10 games won over 12 years and everyone knows Bird played hurt for about the entire 12 years he played..he underwent double Achilles surgery and sat out 12 months of his career…
in Larrys time the coaches never really allowed 3 point shots. they thought if you wasn't able to get in and get your head knocked off and still make the shot you could not be on the team.
