seen the old Flying Scotsman many times when in my teens....many moons ago and well remember the first Deltic diesel engine was being tested from Rugby...you could hear it from 2/3 mile away in the village I lived in then...

I (and the wife sometimes) have been making my way through your vlogs from the beginning. I've resisted commenting as, so far, they're, more or less, two years old. But I just have to comment this time. The shot of the Flying Scotsman... WOW!!! Not only were you in the perfect spot but it was the perfect day! Coming at you like that out of the gloom it was almost ethereal, like a ghost coming at you out of the past. I got chill bumps every time I backed the video up and re-watched it. (And I did quite a few times.) I'm getting chill bumps again just writing this about it. Great job!
    :
Looking forward to the rest of your vlogs and the new ones to come after.

My grandfather was a train driver. He drove steam and diesel - ex GWR. When I was a child he worked on steam lines and he often took me. Couldn't do that now. However, those memories have stayed with me all my life.

Hi Rich, you should be able to get the broken key out with a little locksmiths tool called a key extractor then get a new key cut. You can buy the key extractors on Amazon and Ebay for a few pounds. Probably cheaper and easier than changing the lock cylinder.

Hi guys being an registered nurse now retired , working for all train companies , I don’t know if you knew in York they have a train museum, it’s great fun to look around and many times was able to be on the foot plate with the driver , great fun then in Rochdale they make the rails and have steam engines there that was great , only there to give a yearly medical and hep vaccines to the gentleman there. They were the most great personnel , I actually worked with I loved my time working with the train guys. Then we bought out by BUPA , and my job then was with the fire brigade another great set ot gentlemen . But just think about the museum you might be interested in looking around .Then my niece after I retired she bought me a trip on the orient express it was wonderful ,

It's always something Fran! My basement sewing room flooded due to the remnants of hurricane Gordon. First in 43 years. Nothing damaged but carpet and paneling and I was 'making do' with that. Now I will have a lovely new space in which to create, and steps taken to prevent a recurrence. Always a silver lining.
Lovely to see how your dogs have settled into canal life.

You never said anything about the train whistles, when we visited my husband's family in Louisiana, USA they lived only about 5 blocks from the railway lines in town and the trains would have to blow their whistles because of all the traffic crossings in town and the first 3 days there I was awakened every night from the whistles but gradually learned to turn them out and could finally sleep through the night. Train noises if your not use to them takes a while to become accustomed to those different sounds.

Board games ???? Backgammon , I love backgammon , one day I will challenge you .
And you right ... It is about the journey , unless of course your sat in a marina for the duration of the narrowboat life .
    Not bad £400 ......

I can sympathies with your engine breakdown I had a water tank failure in late july, and two things popped into my head the worse damage possible and very expensive luckily I was wrong on both counts as the cost was actually less than yours, but in all seriousness, as a new owner of a NB myself it is a horrible feeling, but as a experienced boater neighbour said it all part of the learning curve, still loving your vlogs happy cruising

    • @FloatingOurBoat

Thank you for your comment and for watching. You are right, it is a learning curve and everytime we hit a problem it forces us to learn more about our home and chosen way of life. We could do without the extra expense but cant do much about that!

Omg the same thing happened to us years ago on our old boat. Except it came off and snapped the exhaust and we stupidly felt we had no choice to carry on to the next nearest marina
Got there and were told if the stern tube had come out we'd have sunk the thing! It caused such a mess with all the exhaust leaks and oil leaks after and was actually sadly the final nail in the coffin for us. At least you caught in time. Our new boat is nearly ready think but we'll always keep our eye on the engine mounts now. Happens more than u think.

Love the music and the drone footage, plus your camera angle shot ideas are great. More please!!!!!!!
Glad you got the engine mount fixed and the vibration pads renewed. Now OK your on a canal and not the open ocean, but thorough engine checks and listening to changes in the engine note can warn you of problems and often save you money catching them before it's a major issue. Don't just check fluids have a look around for loose cables etc hanging near moving parts, drips on the cooling system etc.
To make the checks easier may I suggest making the engine bay cover quickly removable, by making panels rather than single boards. Also the support beams made removable, they can be supported by metal brackets and held in place with spring hold down clips. This will make the access easier, faster, and more enjoyable if that's the right word.
Incidents are usually a string of events that end badly, so make sure there's no string!!!!!!!!
Resite the engine start key or shield it so the size 9s don't make contact.
I once had to slip my mooring very quickly as the boat next door had a galley fire, I gave the crew my extinguishers they let go my ropes and all worked out well for both of us.
All the above is only a suggestion from years of owning a rather special boat that needed lots of TLC, your narrow boat is special too as its your home, so there's a lot to loose. Plus I won't Vlogs to keep coming and help me keep in contact with the UK.
    Regards to you both. B

Fab vlog as usual, brave drone footage through the trees. We have just bought a drone and only managed a few up and down flights. I suppose practice is the order of the day. 😆

Hey Fran and Rich. this has got to be my favorite episode yet. Sorry that you are having a (short) run of mechanical issues. But as they say a boat is nothing but a hole in the water in which you throw your hard earned money.. (I worked in a boat yard here in the USA for 15years. ). but I digress. The Scotsman how lucky. can you get. Aussum. There was one thing that you said in an earlier video about how was it like to spend 24hrs a day with some one. Well guy you just let your guard slip didn't you . The complement you payed Fran, unexpected and unguarded. Good on ya.. THAT is how.
I'm working my way through to catch up looking forward to more of the same. As I have said before I think that you two are the most real people I have found yet on here. You guys really make me homesick. But thanks anyway

Hi you two...I have been watching you’re Vlog on my big smart TV in Australia and it’s great but the only thing is when it’s finished I cannot give you a thumbs up because there is nothing to click onto it just goes onto the next Vlog. I love watching your show so if anyone can tell me how to do it that would be great. Doug

Good shot of the Scotsman there & yes some other good camera work as well (inc Drone)
In the long term I would be looking to replace some of that boarding over the engine with easily removable covers, ally chequer plate ?
Glad your vid's popped up as I was starting to despair watching the T(pretentious) People vlogs and can now watch a more down to earth couple and yes you are enjoyable to watch as well.

Hi both, so sorry not posted a comment for ages - we've been on our own maiden trip and just got home. Love the drone footage (what drone do you use?)... we had a broken throttle cable to the gearbox... RCR to the rescue.! You two are such an inspiration for being positive and resilient through adversity... and you both look so happy together.... keep on posting - love watching you both... 🍷🍷

Hi Steve, where have you been on your maiden voyage? Rich will do a bit about his drone soon, I don't know what it is, just that I'm terrified of it going in the cut! We also use RCR. i dont know why they get so many bad comments made about them. they have been great for us.
Thanks for your lovely comments, we do mainly stay positive and yes, we are happy together.

yet another great video, sorry about the troubles but such is life just another hurdle to get over, you both seem to fit into this chosen life style like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle to make the picture complete, I look forward to the equipment video, and maybe one on the weaving, is it based on a particular theme\style?, or is it your own creation?, I was also thinking about Mike when he was replacing the decking, a tip would be to number each plank from a known starting point "clockwise" to enable easier re-fitting, and on the broken key, you could fit a square of wood around the key box area (It looks to be wood so you could screw into it) so make added pieces extend out beyond the length of the key when in the ignition, maybe omit the bottom bit if it is open to rain so it does not gather water which will run into the electrics! (if you do so make sure the screws don't extend into the wires inside) or nuts & bolts could be used, I hope your not near the bad weather area, good luck.

    • @FloatingOurBoat
      @FloatingOurBoat  6 років тому

Thank you for watching. The weaving is a free form of weaving from Japan called Saori weaving. it allows the weaver to use whatever colours, textures and techniques they chose. my weaving is inspired by the sights we see while travelling around. Have a look at episode 5.

What a bummer about that engine mount bracket. At least it was a repairable bracket.
All those trees!! We are hammock campers and every time we see trees like that want to hang one up and take a nap. If it were me cruising in one of those boats I probably would spend a lot of time in the trees... LOL.
Oh yes, one last question, I loved that music after you commented about watching paint dry... What is that song called?
    Keep those videos coming...

Oh dear Rich, Fran was right from the very start of the video, they are called "engine mounts" you can call them engine feet or
whatever comes to mind, BUT they are definitely called "engine mounts". Sometimes a woman can know about these things.
I call them rubber thingies wot goes under the big metal lumpy thing.

      @FloatingOurBoat  6 років тому

You are so right, a woman does sometimes know best, but I still think rubber thingies works quite well!

I really enjoyed how you guys ended up having a lovely ol time when you were stuck for 8 days. The 5 mile round walk to the shops, the card games etc - I could just picture me and hubby doing the same thing. Could not believe the keysnap incident Rich! You were mostly resigned to it by then ;-) Have you got (boat) plans for Christmas?

    • @FloatingOurBoat

So a question that has occurred to me. Rich will have no problem getting a stylist, but where do get your hair done Fran as I know you ladies are very particular?
With regards to the "You and Me" song you often use, it was used in a cycling vlog I subscribe to. It forced a sharp intake of breath. "That's Fran and Richy's song" I exclaimed!
No mention of your cycling for a while Rich?
Cracking episode of canal life. Thank you.

ha ha! I love it that 'you and me' has become Fran and Rich music. The bike is back at the cottage for a while now we dont have the car, but we both love walking, so that is fine. We are back at the cottage for a few days, so i do get my hair cut here whenever I can, otherwise I take pot luck wherever we are. Rich's hairstyle is more specialised and only I can do that!!!
Thank you for watching and for your comments

Hi thebigchip Fran is my stylist :) and every few months we pop back to the house for a couple of days when Fran gets her hair done but occasionally she will use stylists local to wherever we are.
People using our theme song - cheek! :) R

Sorry to hear about your run of bad luck but the weather seems great and you were 'stuck' in a beautiful part of the canal (except for the train line, although even that turned out well in the end). What card games do you play? What was the board game that you were playing? We really look forward to all your vlogs. Thanks
