There are two songs that I have never listened to without crying, this one and "10,000 Days/Wings for Marie" (actually two songs that go together) by Tool. I question whether someone has a soul if they don't cry at this song.
At the end i, when he closed the keyboard cover, it felt like he was closing the lid on his own casket. A lot of the older southerners would rub the coffin lid as a final goodbye, like giving them their last hug before they were taken to their grave where they could never get another hug. A lot of older folks from the deep south still do that as a final goodbye to their family or close friend.,even nowadays.
Possessions are nothing. The people who fill your life, your love are everything. When they're gone, they leave a hole nothing else can fill. Thats life in a nutshell
Beautifully heartfelt reaction, Millie. I’m an old bloke myself (72yrs) and grew up with Johnny Cash as one of my singing idols. When I first heard this version, it broke my heart. It still brings tears to my eyes. It was his farewell masterpiece. Thank you for sharing this, young woman. 🙏🫶🏻😳⭐️💥🌹🤠😘🇦🇺
One of the best covers of all time, yes Johnny was a legend and he passed shortly after this song. It hits really deep for those of us who grew up with johnnys songs.
Johnny didn't want to cover Hurt after listening to the NIN version, but producer Rick Rubin showed Johnny his idea for the song and Johnny gave it a try and the rest is history. ✌️
I remember being in college when this song came out. I had rugby training one evening and afterwards, 4 or 5 friends came back to my apartment for a beer. This song was on MTV when I turned the TV on. It reduced a group of big ass, late teen w4nkers to weeping messes. We sat there in silence and tears for about ten minutes. It's still devastating 20 years later.
He battled drug and alcohol addiction a large part of his life. He put his wife June Carter (in the video) through a lot and he had lots of regrets. June died a few months after this song and video and Johnny followed a few months later.
Millie, I am an old man and I would like to give you some advice. You have a kind and beautiful soul. Don't ever let this world take that away from you!
For me, it's a song about regret - about what life has done to you, and the things you've done - the screw-ups, how you've hurt people, the bad things you've done which simply can't be repaired. I'm pretty old, and that's the way I feel - that's the way I relate to the song.
I think its worth noting, at least, that the original song is about heroin addiction (in addition to regret), and Johnny himself fought addiction his entire life as well.
The part that absolutely tears me up every time is it the very very end when he closes the lid to his coffin, I mean, his piano with such a regretful finality. Saying goodbye to his life with nothing but regret.
This is Johnny's jisei. (Death poem) The power Johnny had, and the wisdom he gathered is incomprehensible. He is a music icon. A country legend. He had it all, yet, it did not matter when death comes knocking. He was wise enough to know that and it's potrayed through his voice.. a warning and lesson for us all.
This is actually a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song. Johnny kills it. It's amazing and your reaction is how it makes most everyone feel. I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes too.
Yeah, but still, he covered it because the lyrics are his story too (actually his story with slightly different meaning and context). Just like it might be yours or mine. When he sings it, it hits different because of who he is and what they mean when he sings them. Nothing against NIN, who originated the lyrics. But they mean different things when NIN sings it than when Cash does.
Me too! JC’s version has always brought tears to my eyes and, as an old bloke myself, it will undoubtedly continue to do so until, I too, leave this “mortal coil”. Thank you, Johnny Cash, for all the great music/songs! 🥹👍🤠⭐️✨☄️
Trent Reznor has said that this became Johnny's song after this! It was no longer Trent's! They both sang this song from 2 different view points! Trent did it from someone in thier 20's going through some shit but Johnny sang it from the point of a guy who is close to death and looking back on life! This was the last song Johnny ever did and it is so powerful!
Millie Backstory of this video, it was recorded in February of 2003 with Johnny and his wife, June Carter Cash. Sad part is that after this video, June died in May of same year. As you have seen here, Johnny looked frail. He was too suffering health issues too. Johnny died from heartbroken losing June and health issues in September of same year. One of his children, I think that Roseanne Carter Cash, singer herself, asked her father, "are you saying goodbye in this song?" Johnny replied back, "yes"
It’s ok to cry when you see this. I’m considerably older than you and it tears me apart each time I see it. It’s so tragically yet eloquently says his final goodbye. It’s ok to cry, that’s what this song was meant for, raw emotion.
This one is difficult to watch, every single time. While Johnny Cash certainly had a life worth celebrating, he also had his fair share of regrets as, I suspect, we all do. Thank you for your touching and thoughtful reaction Millie 🙌
The song as a whole is very emotional, but the ending with him closing the keylid at the end and sliding his hands over it gets me every time. It is like he was saying goodbye and when you know he died not long after this was made, it is even more meaningful. Feels like he knew.
This performance is a masterpiece. Crafted from a life time of musical and personal experience. The crown of performance is to stir emotions in the listener, this did it big time.
when he closes the lid on the piano keys, it almost looks like he's closing a coffin lid marking the end of his singing career as well as coming close to the end of life itself.
Great and Emotional Reaction Millie! Most people react that way when seeing and/or hearing this. It was originally a Nine Inch Nails song, written by Trent Reznor, but Johnny made it his own.... HE REALLY MADE IT HIS OWN! WoW! So Many Feelings and Emotions...it's very hard not to tear up. This was his final goodbye. Amazing and Poignant
One of the most heart-wrenching & beautifully haunting performances ever. It is so impactful, moreover considering the struggles he had through life. His upbringing, brothers death, addiction, makes the lyrics just absolutely deafening. His love for his wife June, the stability & support she brought Johnny was monumental. Add to that his encounter with Billy Graham that led to his Christian transformation....just amazing. Great reaction Millie, you have a genuinely beautiful heart. Keep bringing more of Johnny's music.
I think the reason this cover hits much harder than the original is the fact that Mr. Cash is at the end of his life here. A time of reconciliation, but instead he feels pain. So the hope we have that things will work out for us seems to disappear with each line he sings.
i'm watching this back to back with your reaction to "tears in heaven". such an emotional pairing of songs. i cried right along with you. another big virtual hug from me to you, millie. stay well.
The best cover ever made! Johnny takes this song and made it his goodbye. Such pain and sorrow, but you can perceive peaceful and his thanks for a life that he leaves behind.... It is a beautiful piece of art, and for Reznor is an honour that Mr Cash made it his song.
I'm super happy you had the courage to watch this video, johnny Cashe is a rock and roll legend but he had a LOT of demons and regrets which was the price of fame.. The song rends your heart and will make you cry if you have even an ounce of humanity in your heart.. I did warn you it would get to you, proud of you for this!
His performance is both beautiful and heartbreaking, and perfect in its own way. I look at this as a gift that Mr. Cash left for us, an example of how powerful music can be.
I’ve watched this a hundred times and having the knowledge of what was said during and after recording this video I can’t hold back the tears. Great reaction Millie! God bless 🙏🏼🌹🥲

The farewell of a legend.... the way he closes that piano at the end... edit: the original of this cover, was written and performend by Trent Reznor and "Nine inch nails"
You understand. I can never hear this without crying. It is not just true, it is THE TRUTH. Sometimes great art is difficult, but it is always true. Beauty is true, but it is not always pretty. His son said he never did open that piano fallboard again.
The way he closes the piano lid at the end and touches it fondly. It's like he's closing the lid of a casket...like he's saying goodbye to an old friend. I managed to annoy everyone in my household with my sniffling watching reactions to this song, but hey, sometimes we all need a good cry.
I'm a grown man and I cry every time I hear this song. The video tells such a story and with the music, it's like someone is taking two hands on my heart and twisting.
Johnny had a rough and tumble life growing up and was one of the earliest rock & roll stars but never let go of his country roots. He fell into the trappings of success including drinking and substance abuse. His wife June Carter Cash and her family (the legendary Carter family, first family of country music) saved his life. She is in this video looking down on him so lovingly. When he did this song, he was saying good-bye to everyone and his daughter Rosanne knew it. Johnny is in the RRHOF, Country Music Hall of Fame, and The Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
Thanks for your sweet reaction - some unsolicited advice from an old man - keep your heart, your love, your empathy - those are the things that are most important.
I was about your age when this song came out, and it floored everybody. Played constantly on all the music channels, it deeply affected everyone regardless of their age. As soon as you saw it, you knew you were witnessing something very special
He and the subject matter hit us mortals deep and strongly. Just yesterday I commented your reaction to the Beatles' latest (and last?) song. For the second time in two days you made me shed some tears -- and you, yourself. I guess a happy, an encouraging song could do you good right now... Love from Germany
This song is so powerful! Johnny's approach and wisdom he brings raises it to a new level. We reminisce in thoughts of our younger days when life was carefree and our friends and family brought joy to our lives. Our joy is still there but it is tempered by the fact that many of those we love have passed on now and we miss sharing our life with them. Tell your friends and family how much you love them before it is too late.
This was basically Johnnys goodbye song, and he used it to tell us that material things are just what he called them, "dirt", and that our relationship with God and family is the only things that matter in the end.
You said you don't know what you are feeling , the same thing i felt the first time i heard it, and every time i hear it, the back story is so sad, actually in tears with you xx
If you can watch this video and not tear up, I'm concerned you have no soul. Much respect to Trent Reznor for donating his song as a tribute to a legend. Much respect to Johnny Cash for adopting this as his own.
I became a big nine inch nails fan when I this song came out in my teens and when Johnny Cash covered it and Trent allowed it with his final approval it made me like him more as a person. This was very personal to Trent and though it was hard to allow it to be remade like this, but knowing what it was too Johnny as well plus blessing off on it when completed is outstanding! Love 9”nails and Johnny❤
Johnny was a legend partially because he poured so much of himself into his music, it was real and came from his experiences. Someday perhaps a young girl will tear up because of the passion and parts of yourself you chose to share with the world in your music
Music should mean something, it should move us in some way, be it happiness, sadness, reflection, thought provoking, motivational, whatever. I think that your reaction was beautiful, Millie. ❤
I have watched this video at least 100 times, and it tears me apart every time. The older we get, the more we realize how much of what we have spent our precious time and energy on is worthless. It all, including the people, goes away in the end. For all that he achieved, as he was approaching his end, he saw it clearly for what it had been. Building an "empire of dirt." And although he didn't write this song, as Trent Reznor himself is reported to have said, it's his song now.
Growing up in Arkansas, his older brother was killed in a farm accident when they both were very young. His father blamed him. Cash had a hellish life; loss, addiction, you name it. His songs touch all that.
When hearing this song, you cant help but shed tears, especially for those of us who come from and still are in dark places in our lives. Love ya millie, you rock!
The way the video chronicles his life for me is the best part of this the journey and the way the lyrics are allowing Jonny to express his life and saying goodbye 🙏 amazing I feel the original is in its self and different vibe both reach and touch on different things both are great 🤛
Good reaction to this excellent song. Cash is an American icon, had a great career lasting decades and decades. Much more for you to discover. Keep rocking!😊❤🎉
I remember hearing his songs on the radio as a kid in the early '60s (my father was a C&W fan, so I grew up developing an early appreciation of said genre in addition to rock 'n' roll 🤗). When Johnny Cash's cover of this song was released many decades later, it blew my mind, and the fact that he passed away soon after cemented this masterpiece of aching soulful beauty into my brain for the remainder of whatever time I have left. 🥲
I read somewhere that Trent Reznor's version was a young person looking forward without hope while Johnny's version is an old person looking back with regret.
Definitely consider watching the film "Walk the Line" (maybe even a reaction video??) starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny and Reese Witherspoon as June Cater. So good!!
I really do love your reactions. Yeah this is tough because of course I mostly know his career which was a long time ago, and he has such a rich catalog of fantastic stuff. But this one makes my allergies act up every single time. Every single time. And your emotional reaction to it just doubled down on that. Bless your heart. Maybe check out a clever but simple autobiographical song from him about a flood that he experienced out on the farm when he was a kid, and it's called, Five Feet High and Rising. It's clever from a structural standpoint as there is a key change upwards with all of the five verses, and then each of the five verses tells the story about what it was like when the water was 1 ft high and rising and then when I was 2 ft high and rising and so forth all the way to 5 ft high and rising. By then they're like trying to escape no matter how they can. But it's so well told and it's clever. It's subtle, but it's lyrically quite clever as well. To where he initially as a little boy in this crisis asks his dad who is rowing the boat or whatever, a question, and the dad is too busy to answer and then he asked again and this time he asked his mom and then she delivers the response. It really is wonderful. Classic Johnny Cash.
I was never a Johnny Cash fan but this is one of my favourite songs. I can't listen to it with dry eyes. He covered a Nine Inch Nails song and made it his. His career was written off by the industry and he showed that he had more in him.
Hollywood made a biopic about Johnny Cash after he died, with Juaquin Pheonix in the title role. That's a good place to start for learning about his life and what he went through, especially if you're doing movie reactions. He was a real Christian, a genuine suffering servant who was determined to help prisoners, because he was sure he was no better than anyone in jail.
I see that little sample at the beginning of you mirroring the guitar. I have to look in the description. You got caught in the algorithm and here I am. 🙏💯♥️
This cover is amazing, it's honestly one of Johnny's best. The main difference between this and the original NiN version is that the original is about the regret of one mistake while this version is a reflection on an entire life's worth of mistakes and regrets.
"What have I become, my sweetest friend... I will let you down, I will make you hurt..." as the video begins to show flashes of our dearest friend being nailed to a cross by Johnny's sins and ours... Powerful!
There was an old English actor called John Mill who lived well into his 90s. Someone asked him what was the hardest thing about being so old. He said watching all your friends and family die.

This remains one of my favorite and poignant songs I've ever heard. He did such an incredible version.
You are so sincere, I feel you like I feel Johnny Cash!
I used to watch the Johnny Cash show every week. He introduced me to so many new artists.
You said you don't know what you are feeling , the same thing i felt the first time i heard it, and every time i hear it, the back story is so sad, actually in tears with you xx
The song is moving the way Johnny sings it is incredible and then you add the visual aspect of the video and it becomes a complete masterpiece
I still cry (decades after hearing it for the first time). 🙂
Yeah, the legend Johnny Cash.
He can pull emotions like few can.
If you can watch this video and not tear up, I'm concerned you have no soul. Much respect to Trent Reznor for donating his song as a tribute to a legend. Much respect to Johnny Cash for adopting this as his own.
This song/video never fails to bring tears to my eyes. It's so good
I became a big nine inch nails fan when I this song came out in my teens and when Johnny Cash covered it and Trent allowed it with his final approval it made me like him more as a person. This was very personal to Trent and though it was hard to allow it to be remade like this, but knowing what it was too Johnny as well plus blessing off on it when completed is outstanding! Love 9”nails and Johnny❤
It's a song about Johnny's regrets from decades as an addict and the way he treated folks.
It’s such a beautifully edited video. I really feel it captured his heart.
I love his version of "The mercy seat".
I have seen this video, maybe a hundred times and it gets me every time
Genius
This song pulls emotions out of you every time you here it
Johnny was a legend partially because he poured so much of himself into his music, it was real and came from his experiences. Someday perhaps a young girl will tear up because of the passion and parts of yourself you chose to share with the world in your music
When he closed that piano, I was sailing on a sea of tears !
I get close to my end, so I understand this so well...
Bye...
Yeah it is quite a realisation, the empire of dirt got me too. Every line of this song hits
It is brutally honest and real. Something authentic in a world of fakes. Songs that touch people.
What an incredible sound, I love this song, watching the video it's much stronger, it's almost impossible not to get emotional. great video @Millie :)
I read somewhere that Trent Reznor's version was a young person looking forward without hope while Johnny's version is an old person looking back with regret.
Johnny passed away two weeks after this song was released which hit even harder when they played it on the radio
Definitely consider watching the film "Walk the Line" (maybe even a reaction video??) starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny and Reese Witherspoon as June Cater. So good!!
You need no words we see your emotions on your face! So pretty!
It hurts when his friends die and he knows its going to hurt his remaining friends and family when he dies.
Best „good bye“-song of a legend ever. Nothing else to say.
Beautiful reaction to a beautiful song,
Johnny closing the piano at the end gets me every time
Hollywood made a biopic about Johnny Cash after he died, with Juaquin Pheonix in the title role.
I honestly can imagine
