This was like watching a Kardashian reacting to Shakespeare.
He’s not off-key - you just don’t like his voice and can’t be bothered to work out or even google the lyrics. Reminds me of the kind of ignorance that I often hear from Dylan’s detractors “he can’t sing” etc. Aside from that it’s just hugely insulting to one the finest British songwriters of the last 45 years. He sounds deaf? The pianist “looks British”? Appalling stuff.

I’m 67 and remember going seeing Paul Weller when he played in The Jam at Leeds uni. Must have been about mid 70s. They were a groundbreaking trio. Bruce Foxton was an incredible presence with his bass.

I'm American and LOVE Weller, as do many of my friends. I have seen him several times live here in Chicago. I even took my mom, who is also a fan. Don't judge us based on this clueless reviewer.

Try the Style Council's "Paris Match", "Have You Ever Had It Blue", "My Ever Changing Moods" and perhaps Paul Weller's solo efforts with "Round and Round" and "Wishing On A Star". Weller also had a stellar start with The Jam prior to his Style Council and solo career.
The female singer is Dee C. Lee and she sang with Wham! before joining The Style Council. She was backing vocals on Club Tropicana and Young Guns (Go For It!), and in the videos. She also had a solo hit in 1985 with a track called ‘See the Day’.
She also married Weller and they had 2 kids. They divorced a while ago. I also think she did a lot of session work in the acid jazz days, like with Guru and that gang.
I feel old now… remember this haha, its like you recognise it, but its not something I would ever go yeah I want to listen to this…

It sure looks like eighties because it was a hit in UK back in 1984…the sound of this song and many others from The Style Council is what I might call it a Neo- Motown sound..Very respectable opinión but i I strongly disagree on being Paul Weller off key… she should listen some more songs of this Great and Respectable artist….

Best voice ever, no, froggy??? NO! "The chick" is also awesome. Only part I agree on. "The chick" has a name as does everyone else in the band. Worst music review I have seen. Not just because I like the song and am a fan of most of his work, but your lack of research and musical knowledge as a, "radio personality".

He was famous as lead singer of The Jam-a punky new wave band, his vocal style mostly mellowed over the years for his solo career after this band. He married the female singer Dee C Lee & they had some kids. His vocal style definitely fit The Jam more than the SC.

I would encourage you to look at his broader collection of work. Be warned though, he will growl and intentionally go off-key from time to time. The song is an ode to English resilience... the kind that's necessary when all the chips are stacked against you. That's the reason for the growl--making it by sheer willpower. I notice you didn't bother to consider the title or lyrics. And that's alright. But maybe you'll give it another listen, and this time imagine living in a terrible recession, losing your job and barely making ends meet. That's representative of the struggle our English brothers were living at the time the song was released. Thanks for your reaction.
