  • For the last couple of weeks I've been trying out the NearStream VM33, a camera that takes on the Mevo Start as a wireless streaming camera. I try it in a number of different scenarios and against other cameras and microphones. How did it fare?

After working with camera for a week or two I agree with you.
The question is, why use this over a phone for the price?

The picture quality looks promising. I think I'll try it out.
It's zoom feature seems far better than phone camera

Ive purchased two of these cameras. One connects the other camera is not popping up in the app. I have tried everything. Do you have any suggestions?

Have you succeeded connecting the other? In nearstream app, click the "connecting the camera" button, and wait for the model name to appear, and click it to connect.

How do I get the 8 Mics at the top of the VM33 to pick up sound.

If there are no other external microphones connected then it should be defaulted to the internal microphones. Most functions are controlled within the app so just check what microphone it’s using in the audio-in section. If I plug an external microphone in it switches to that, but by default it should be using the microphones on top of the device.

Nice video! As a suggestion, take a deeper look at the sync between audio and video when editing!

Leaving the sync slip was entirely deliberate. I put a few captions up in the corner to note it, and my full written review on the Amazon page details it further. I usually check and adjust video and audio sync in Premier when I’m doing the edit, but when I’m reviewing audio and video equipment I make no adjustments that could skew the genuine performance of a device. It’s normal for a separate camera and microphone to be 1-4 frames out of sync, especially if USB hubs are used between a computer and a device, but I wouldn’t expect that from a single device capturing audio and video together. Sadly, the VM33 starts off within 1-2 frames of synchronisation, but over the course of a few minutes recording can slip over a second, 30 frames, apart. I deliberately kept that in to show how far is slips in a single recording. 25:54

@@ToughMonkey Wondering if you have seen any improvement in this vid/audio sync issue? Would hope that it could be addressed in software/firmware at some point. Tempted to buy a vm33 but would like to know that they have addressed that problem. Seems some people report having the problem and others dont.

@@soundlayers I’ve not returned to it since I completed my review to be honest. I’m working through a whole batch of new reviews which should be out over the next couple of weeks, so I wanted to stick with the camera and microphone that I’m used to and know to be reliable. I did see it yesterday though as I was clearing out the loft. Maybe after Xmas when I get some time I’ll take a second look and see if anything has improved with an update.

Factually speaking, it's so unpleasant to see your statement about the camera that it's becoming increasingly difficult to believe a content creator. What kind of camera is this? What do you compare them to? USB vs. WiFi…. latency, audio, etc.
LTE or 5G vs. WiFi. Pre-series product…..You know this as an “Amazon Vine customer”. You presented a really good product poorly without any technical understanding. And you don't even know why...

Hi, I'm sorry I've only just seen your comment. I'm not sure I understand what you're having difficulty believing. Are you suggesting I've lied in my video or misrepresented it in some way? I've demonstrated the camera exactly as it performed without any post-editing for video or (especially) sound. I've presented the quality of the footage anyone should expect to get out of it, which I wanted to do because it really is a poor camera. I've had this several months and keep going back to see if there's been any improvements with firmware updates and it remains a really poor device. I recently tested the new Obsbot Tail Air which obliterates the NearStream on every metric other than price.
I also don't understand your comments about what I'm comparing them to. I explain exactly what I've compared them to with demonstrations of them side by side, and given examples of what you'd use the NearStream for. I'm only able to compare the NearStream with other devices I have access to. This is not Linus Tech or Gerald Undone who have access to suppliers of demonstration products on request, it's just me reviewing what I can get hold of. All of my reviews are real-world tests. Not lab tests or in controlled environments. They're my opinions on how the products have behaved in my day to day use of them. Unlike many reviewers who get a few days, sometimes only a few hours, I get a month to fully test out the Vine products I review. Every opinion is honest and truthfull and I never get any influence of any nature from manufacturers or Amazon. If you believe I'm untrustworthy I could show you hundreds of emails and messages I get through my socials from companies wanting to "Colab" with me in return for favourable reviews and I ignore every single one. I'm sure those messages go out to hundreds of other reviewers who may not be so straight on the matter.
Did I present a really good product poorly? I firmly believe I just presented an awful product exactly as it performed. Awfully. That's as factually speaking as you can get on this product.
